Preppy, old money, English country, coastal grandma, and classic style are all cut from the same cloth. Love it! Cute styling ideas, Beth. Thanks for sharing.
Sadly, or happily,, I’ve never got out of preppy,, it’s classic , classy, timeless,, I’m just glad it’s made it’s way back into the mainstream ❤️ Way to go helping it out Beth!!!!
I love preppy style and always have. And Ali McGraw did it for me too! One retailer who I think you neglected which surprised me is Talbots. They always have preppy style. It never went out with them. Oh and remember Papagallo shoes. They were they preppy brand for sure.
I'm one of those Gen Xers who was a teen through the 80s prep look - I'll never stop loving it. Classic, classy - and if you buy good quality pieces you'll wear it forever.
I might be too old for my 60’s wrap kilts, knee socks or tights and penny loafers; but for me, preppie will always mean a classic, polished, casual look that has never been and never will be out of style.
I’m often rewatch your videos, and today I noticed the black oxford-type shoes with the brown trim on the shelf behind you. I have exactly the same style of shoes, from Clark’s, and I love them. And it’s nice to know that someone with your style and taste likes them too!
I'm from the OG of preppy/Coastal Grandma Boston/Cape Cod. I've been doing this lifestyle since birth. It's my style language. My preppy style icon was Princess Diana. She brought gingham check back into style.
I was in high school in the late 70's, early 80's when the preppy style was in. I loved it and always have. It is my favorite fashion style and Ralph Lauren is the King!
Oh man, this is my style. What a great revival. I remember when LaCrosse was the preppy brand And madras plaids with loafers Thanks so much for this walk down Memory Lane
I thought it was so funny when I started college in 1972 that all the kids who went to public schools were wearing preppy clothes including saddle oxfords. I had just graduated from an all girls prep school where we wore uniforms with saddle oxfords, pleated skirts and white button downs. The last thing I wanted was to wear those clothes again voluntarily. But my style had been influenced by the classic elements of prep forever. So here I am fifty years later wearing cricket jumpers, loafers, and button downs. Nothing changes.
🥺Longed for classic black & white saddle shoes❤ in grade school. All the cool girls wore them. Sadly, my beloved 🥰mom would only sanction all white oxfords [sigh😔]. 🤔Nowadays, I see the wisdom w/staying solid. Thinking the white oxford is a slimmer, slightly dressier, highly feminine white sneaker alternative w/a dress or pencil skirt today. 🤓Noticed an elegant brown or black brogue was a shoe staple for 👑Queen Elizabeth through the ages while "at home". She would pair them w/a plaid a-line knee length skirt for walkabout on her palatial grounds in good weather. 😬Realize she's not everyone's style icon, but I always appreciated her taste. As someone who prefers skirts over trousers, it's tricky to find someone who styles more classic corporate suiting styles in a more approachable country, casual way. 😉She always favored her black 🖤Gucci loafers w/the 🧡brights💛 for her official day engagements. 🌈 Loved the joyful color😁 that she adopted later in life, but always thought the longer hemlines & dark designer loafers brought 👁👁eyes ⬇️ to her feet😂. 🧐Thought they emphasized her petite 🤏 stature in an unflattering way🤣. Think it would've benefited her greatly had she broke tradition & gone for an elegant nude loafer. Unlike me, she certainly could've afforded a 🆒️ custom designer pair. 😮Tempted to buy some saddle shoes this year. 🔍Always on the 👀look out for nude flats in my price range, but this color often sets off my 🚨frump👵 factor. 😏That got me noticing influencers showing the versatility of classic tan shoes & belts〰️particulary when paired w/the 💠blue color range (light chambray, denim, & navy). 🤫As a result, a two tone tan leather & suede saddle shoe has recently caught my interest. In 2023, tan shoes started to strike me as versatile as well as leg lengthening⬇️. Growing to like the subtle, classic, equestrian🐎 flair too. They often seem fresh & earthy over the more sophisticated nude. All while still being elongating for the leg↕️. 😊When it comes to wearing skirt, skort, short or cropped pant 〰️finding tan shoes less STATEMENT than white, & less JARRING or CLUNKY than brown or black shoes. 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)
How sweet, that you had such strong ideas about fashion at 12! And! What a good taste you had already! So I pay belated compliments to little Beth (at 12):-)) Thanks for this video. Greetings from Germany! PS I wrote it before... I love your preppy tennis sweater!
Love this entire video! Preppy was hot back in my college days. I haven't been able to declutter an out-grown crew sweater that had my initials embroidered on it, worn endlessly either with an unfolded turtleneck or a white spread collar oxford. Ah, memories. I think preppy is timeless too, but nice to see it back 'on trend'. I need new sizes. LOL
I was IN prep school in the early 80’s. Preppy runs in my veins. Nothing like a turtleneck, short wool plaid skirt, little cardigan or blazer, tights and boots. Go JCrew and Talbots for the perfect forever pieces. Ebay your Ralph Lauren for the win!
I have always loved the preppy style. We are the same age so I've been wearing it for a long time. Talbots is my go to store for that look. Thank you for sharing.
I’ve always loved preppy! I ordered the blue houndstooth blazer, the Parisian cat t-shirt and the tennis shoes with the green backs from J Crew factory. I think it will look very pretty! I loved sweater sets. I will wear them again🙌🏻
Preppy has always been my favorite style. Started wearing it while at university (in SC) in the early 80’s. It is really an old money fun and fresh style. Also classic and always appropriate. ❤❤❤
So fun!! I love preppy style and was the proud owner of both the Preppy Handbook and the Sloan Ranger handbook!!! My inner preppy is happy to be back in style :)
Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I was in high school when the movie “ Love Story “ came out , like you it changed the trajectory of my clothing style, still wearing a preppy style 😉.
You are the one who brought preppy style back to my mind and I am very grateful for it. You, Beth, look great in preppy style and your sweater of today, this v- neck tennis sweater, is just gorgeous. Thanks to you and to your daughter in law too, of course. :-))
I was a teenager in the 1980s. I totally owned an original copy of that Preppy Handbook! As soon as I saw the title of your video, that book came straight to my mind! I wonder if my mom still has it at her house? 🤔 I need to go digging…😏
Love you Beth! Love your style, i get lots of ideas from your videos 😍 also your voice is so warm, unpretentious and comforting, very easy to listen to. Im a fan!! Been watching you for a couple years now!! ♥️
I just watched Love Story a few weeks ago with a family member who is obsessed with it and I commented that I would wear any of the outfits Ali McGraw wore in the movie as they are timeless! Really enjoyed your take on the Preppy look.
Meg Ryan in You’ve Got Mail also reflected preppy/classic style. I really liked her attire in that film. Fun video and like hearing the background information on this style. Thank you.
😊YES 📨❕️Last year, I went scene by scene of that 🎞film to capture her outfits. 🤍Loved her character's vibe. Meg Ryan often strikes me as a slightly tom-boyish girl-next-door. ☯️Her costuming beautifully balanced ⚖️ her masculine & feminine energy. The cotton &/or cashmere cardigan of twinset fame 👑reigned supreme in this movie too. It was often paired w/a ribbed wife beater tank & chino or pleated trouser. 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)
Hi Beth, I start watching you because a good friend said you need to watch her (you) cause you both have that same style. I'm glad I listen, I really enjoy your channel. Now you going into my favorite time of the ("Fall") year...I love layers (blazers, sweaters and toppers) and accessories are my favorites that what pull your outfits together. Beth, I'm always watching to see if something new I can add to my style😊
Ty Beth and please thank your daughter in law. I loved this video and all of your purchases. I'm 68 and love this style so much. I've always liked classic minimal pieces so the preppy, old money, quiet luxury trends are right up my alley. I actually have pieces I wore in my 30's that are right in style today. All though I'm glad I kept some of these pieces, there are so many pieces I wished that I hadn't gotten rid of. (My all leather burgundy midi coat, a cognac colored trench coat, several cable knit sweaters, and multiple pairs of loafers and balet flats to name a few. At least I had fun replacing these right? Have a lovely day.
Growing up in Dublin in the 60s my high school uniform is the trend of today! Tartan pleated skirts, white button down, v-neck cable sweaters wool blazer with crest, gabardine wool trench coats and loafers 😅 The only difference from one scool to another was the color, navy grey, maroon, dark green etc and special stores would carry the full uniform of various schools. Who knew that would ever evolve into a trend, but I beieve it was the inspiration for Ralph Lauren, but the English version, as so much of his style emulates the "old world" aesthetic, from clothing to home furnishing to equestrian pursuits 😅
I love the Preppy style too! No one did it better than Ali McGraw or Lady Di. 💗Always enjoy a good twin set and you both looked darling in the sets or using them as separates. I was surprised that you didn't mention Talbots in this video.
Beth you taught me something. I’ve been dressing the preppy style off and on! I wear more classic style now. Thank you for this great video! Have a very blessed week!
I love the sweater you are wearing in the video. I consider that the epitome of preppy style with the blue stripes going around the V-neck. I am excited because I love preppy style and I know I incorporate preppy a lot into what I wear and I am petite and I am also glad to hear that J.Crew factory has a lot of petite styles.
At the 6:15 minutes point: I still have, and wear that same wool, cable-knit cardigan with leather buttons. I handwash it in Woolite and dry it on beach towels. It is in perfect condition, even after 45 years. When I wear it, people stop me to ask where I got it. In the photo to the right: you look like Princess Diana!
Ohhh, btw,, I first read LoveStory in high school, instantly fell in love with it. Then “rented” the video and watched with my girlfriends. The movie and book begin with the same line,,,, still one of my absolute favorites!!! TkS for reminding me of such a great memory . 👍🏻🙂
Wow - was that your mother in those pics? How gorgeous! Now we see where you get your good looks. I was mesmerized by Ali McGraw’s wardrobe in Love Story. I vividly remember all of the women coming out of the theatre in tears. It made me cry too. Preppy has never really gone out of style…
Hip- Hip-Horray! I've always loved preppy style so have never entirely abandoned this look regardless of current trends. You just can't beat preppy for a classic and quality looking style. I, too, fell in love with Ali McGraw in LOVE STORY. I didn't know then what that style was called only that I loved the look of it and wanted to dress like that. I knew it was ME!!! Thanks for the great preppy looks that you and Kelly showed. It's so exciting to see that sweater sets are big-time "in" again. I'm so looking forward to dressing for those cooler Fall days. In a couple of weeks my husband and I will be moved back to Des Moines, Iowa after a looooooooong hiatus from Iowa. Iowa, here we come!
The Old Money aesthetic is so on trend. To modernize it, remember to tuck in your sweaters and tops. Half tuck or side tuck is more on trend. A great leather belt is a must. Your choices must be of good quality there is no getting around that, no cheap knockoffs! Tunics are not in style. Skip them.
Love the video. The colors are fresh and cute. I really like that this style is classic. You don't have to run out and buy all new things every season.
Except for one aberrant near-decade, when I tried unsuccessfully to squeeze myself into Boho style, I’ve always loved a classic/preppy style. I always choose the very best fabrics and materials I can find, in classic styles and my personal color palette. Preppy has some elements I don’t like, especially the novelty prints, but many elements I do, like contrast-trim. I searched for years until this classic detail came back in style, now I’m stocking up. That and the collared knit top or sweater. These details are so classic that they’ll never look dated.
🥰Adore all the different strains of boho from 🏵70s hippie flair, 🎸glam rock, to 🌼prairie style〰️ but they don't love me back😂. Feel absolutely absurd😖 in any sort of statement sleeves, exaggerated yokes, asymmetrical hems, lacy layered frothy skirts, petite floral prints, or flared pants. 😊In the 90s, I favored flirty fit & flare dresses that twirled 🔄 divinely for two-stepping & waltzing👢. Did keep a trio of tiered maxi circle skirts (in black, olive green, & tan), but they are my rare exceptions. 😉Looking for an under ankle bootie to go w/them. 🤠Still go to these country concerts🎶 & the ladies look so fabulous in their casual feminine boho chic gear, but it's just not a vibe I can pull off🤣. Preppy & Classic Chic fit my spirit more. Nowadays, Ralph Lauren's ⛵️American Coastal or 🐴English Equestrian Country Style is much more my speed. 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)
I saw Love Story in my teens too. I also took note of each, and every outfit Ali wore. And I loved them all. At one point at my school all the girls wore Ali's knit cap in Winter. I remember buying mine and just adoring it. Do you remember the knit hat? I wore a lot of black tights and black turtlenecks after that in the Winter. And of course, Harvard University was just up the road from my hometown of Watertown, MA so it was doubly important to us all. (as well as the Thomas Crown Affair which was filmed in the Mt Auburn cemetery, a favorite of locals and a place where my mother's remains lie.) I like some Preppy clothing, but from decades working at Corporate HQ and doing a fair amount of business travel, my style is very tailored instead of Preppy. I can't wear some of the brighter colors and patterns that Preppy style features, I am uncomfortable in many bright colors and bold patterns (not stripes and gingham). But I was in JCrew Factory a few days ago and purchased the most darling green herringbone wool jacket. It matched my eyes perfectly. Couldn't NOT buy it. LOL I did see the dog tee shirt. I came very close to purchasing it, but I ended up with a layered necklace instead. BTW, you can get Preppy styles from Talbots, too. Thank you, Beth.
Loved this video! I love the preppy/classic look. In fact, I purchased two bright and fun printed shorts from Talbot's this summer. I style it with a simple tee and sneakers and I have a fun preppy look. I sometimes top it off with a cardigan over my shoulders. I love Ralph Lauren. I will be visiting their store for the first time on Madison Ave. in NYC at the end of August. I just wish I had the budget for their finer line. I still have my my J.Crew pea coat from about 20 years ago. When you showed Ali McGraw from Love Story, it brought back such good memories. You are the best, Beth!
You will love the Ralph Lauren store in NYC. The only one that tops it is the Paris flagship store. And the Ralph Lauren restaurant in Paris is one of my favorites.
Very interesting presentation, excellent examples. Enjoyed the walk down memory lane. Updated for today. I appreciate the work you put into this video.
Wonderful video. So informative and entertaining. Preppy is and always has been my style. I’m more than happy to see it coming back, but for me I wore it all along.
In High School it was Bass Weejuns, madras, villager shirts, trench coats, blue blazers. Jackie Kennedy was an icon. Preppy is so classic.
I have never been more excited! I am a true blue 80's preppy gal and I am buying up what I see so I can make it another few decades! LOL
I love preppy style, it’s so comfortable and yet always looks smart.
Preppy, old money, English country, coastal grandma, and classic style are all cut from the same cloth. Love it! Cute styling ideas, Beth. Thanks for sharing.
Well said!
The pink jcrew blazer looks lovely on you. Like the Lady Di photo, lovely combination of colours and fabrics on her. Thanks
Sadly, or happily,, I’ve never got out of preppy,, it’s classic , classy, timeless,,
I’m just glad it’s made it’s way back into the mainstream ❤️
Way to go helping it out Beth!!!!
I will always have a prep to my step!
Good one, Beth! I love preppy too❤
I love preppy style and always have. And Ali McGraw did it for me too! One retailer who I think you neglected which surprised me is Talbots. They always have preppy style. It never went out with them. Oh and remember Papagallo shoes. They were they preppy brand for sure.
I love Talbots also, and they carry great Petite sized clothes!!
Talbots is my go to!
Oh my gosh, I forgot about that brand of shoes. You brought back some memories for sure!❤
I'm one of those Gen Xers who was a teen through the 80s prep look - I'll never stop loving it. Classic, classy - and if you buy good quality pieces you'll wear it forever.
Preppy never left for me, I have always rocked it.
Loved my bass weejuns and sweater sets and pleated skirt
I might be too old for my 60’s wrap kilts, knee socks or tights and penny loafers; but for me, preppie will always mean a classic, polished, casual look that has never been and never will be out of style.
@s: Do relate and agree, since come from a similar era (am age 75) .
FINALLY!!! Preppy returns!! My husband and I both feel like we never adjusted to any other style!!! 😂😂
Love it!!
I love preppy. I never truly get away from it. Love my button ups, blazers, etc.
I’m with you.
I’m often rewatch your videos, and today I noticed the black oxford-type shoes with the brown trim on the shelf behind you. I have exactly the same style of shoes, from Clark’s, and I love them. And it’s nice to know that someone with your style and taste likes them too!
Thank you so much. I've just discovered this style, even though I've worn all that classic items
I'm from the OG of preppy/Coastal Grandma Boston/Cape Cod. I've been doing this lifestyle since birth. It's my style language. My preppy style icon was Princess Diana. She brought gingham check back into style.

Preppy is the best. I still have my copy of the original preppy handbook from 1980!
I luv watching your videos!
Thank you so much!
I love the English Country Walk look, another classic style, both those jackets would work well for that.
I agree, Beth. "Love Story"'s Ali McGraw's wardrobe was my favorite. Love every look.
Hi from Annie I really like that classic preppy look can make it work very well with all clothing in the wardrobe without having t shop much.
Oh man, this is my style. What a great revival. I remember when LaCrosse was the preppy brand And madras plaids with loafers Thanks so much for this walk down Memory Lane
You forgot Talbot’s! That’s my favorite preppy store.
I have never left the preppy …your videos are so so helpful …I love them❤thank you
I got a polo shirt at the beginning of summer and now enjoying Ralph Lauren purses.❤
I love love love preppy style! At just reaching 60 soon, I still think it's classic. Much of my wardrobe is classic. Ralph Lauren I like the best.
Love that!
I'm really happy to bring my pearls out. Don't forget Talbot's.
How could I forget Talbots. Thanks for the reminder!
I am liking the short pinkish blazer.

My very first preppy outfit was a maroon Ralph Laurent polo shirt worn with black tailored shorts and I top the look off with a pair of penny loafers.
How sweet,
that you had such strong ideas about fashion at 12!
And!
What a good taste you had already!
So I pay belated compliments to little Beth (at 12):-))
Thanks for this video.
Greetings from Germany!
PS I wrote it before... I love your preppy tennis sweater!

Fun to see you both together!
Thank you! I love preppy and you gave me several ideas. Enjoy all your videos.
Glad you like them!
Thank you Beth, ideas for styling are great! Preppy never really goes out of fashion.. its classy rather than trendy.
I love the preppy style, too, and mostly I purchase at Land's End's which is here in Germany since the 1990ies. Good video, thx, Beth.
I have always loved a classic preppy look.
Love it!
Loved hearing the history of “preppy “. Definitely took some time and thought to pull this together.❤
I have always loved the preppy style. We are the same age so I've been wearing it for a long time. Talbots is my go to store for that look. Thank you for sharing.
preppy look is not tied to any age group. Lovely presentation as usual
Love the fashion show with your daughter-in-law!
I’ve always loved preppy! I ordered the blue houndstooth blazer, the Parisian cat t-shirt and the tennis shoes with the green backs from J Crew factory. I think it will look very pretty! I loved sweater sets. I will wear them again🙌🏻
Love it!!
Preppy has always been my favorite style. Started wearing it while at university (in SC) in the early 80’s. It is really an old money fun and fresh style. Also classic and always appropriate. ❤❤❤
I totally agree! It has staying power.
So fun!! I love preppy style and was the proud owner of both the Preppy Handbook and the Sloan Ranger handbook!!! My inner preppy is happy to be back in style :)
Preppy! My Weejuns never go out of style. 80's prepster here. Have a great fall, ya'll.
So looking forward to cooler weather and fall fashion!
Thanks for the brand names. Love preppy! Forgot about the ribbon belt 😉
Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I was in high school when the movie “ Love Story “ came out , like you it changed the trajectory of my clothing style, still wearing a preppy style 😉.
You are so welcome!
This is perfect. 😃 The style and commentary is just what I have been looking for! Well done!
You are the one who brought preppy style back to my mind and I am very grateful for it.
You, Beth, look great in preppy style and your sweater of today, this v- neck tennis sweater, is just gorgeous.
Thanks to you and to your daughter in law too, of course.

I beg your pardon?
I love preppy! I’ve been waiting for a long time. And I love watching you !
I just LOVE CLASSIC!!!

That's a great way of looking at it! Sometimes replacing an item is half the fun!
I always loved the preppy look!! Just clean and conservative with a kick of trend!
Preppy has always been one of my favorites. My influence was Audrey Hepburn and Princess Diana. I’m glad it’s back.😊
Me too! It makes it easier to shop when there's more to choose from.
Love this video! I dress on trend any time preppy comes back in style. My college boyfriend called me the eternal prepster.
Love that!

Love love love Classy Preppy!!

I love preppy style and have several preppy elements in my wardrobe. I think you forgot one classic preppy pattern - argyle!
Good call!
Ohhh, btw,, I first read LoveStory in high school, instantly fell in love with it. Then “rented” the video and watched with my girlfriends. The movie and book begin with the same line,,,, still one of my absolute favorites!!! TkS for reminding me of such a great memory . 👍🏻🙂

You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
The preppy style is my favorite! I am so happy to see this style make a comeback. Thanks for the video!❤
I could kick myself for getting rid of my navy pea coat years ago, but I have saved my striped belts:)
Tweed, tweed, I am craving fall and tweed.
Yes it was! She was a beautiful woman. Thanks for stopping by!
Gorgeous!!
So excited the preppie look is back. I love the polished look and I LOVE blazers!
Skip them.
Thank you You taught a lot about preppy style. I’m excited!
Lol. Ali MacGraw was the anti preppy, that was the whole point of the movie
Anyway, I’m a huge lover of preppy fashion, so thank you for this video.
As always fun watching you!
🥰Adore all the different strains of boho from 🏵70s hippie flair,
🎸glam rock, to 🌼prairie style〰️ but they don't love me back😂.
Nowadays, Ralph Lauren's
⛵️American Coastal or 🐴English Equestrian Country Style is much more my speed.

This is my favorite style esthetic. Very smart looks. Can’t wait for all the styling content ❤
Can’t wait for cooler weather to wear these.❤❤❤
I never got over sweater sets! Love them!
Love prep
