Stephen King saw this movie and loved it. He very much loved Kathy Bates performance in the movie so much he write two more characters for her to play. He wrote the book Dolores Claiborne and a movie was made with Kathy as the lead character with Jennifer Jason Leigh playing her daughter. That movie is excellent. The other character is a DJ in The Stand 4 part Miniseries. Kathy plays a character named Ray Flowers. Her role is short but very good.

  • @davidmeir9348
    @davidmeir9348 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Actually, @MaryCherryOfficial, you got two points from the book spot on in your end commentary.
In the book, the hobbling is by sawing his foot and cauterizing it with a blowtorch.
Incredibly graphic and gore was not the direction Rob Reiner wanted to go with this film which is why it was changed.
The scene in the film is still chilling, even without blood and I don't know anyone, even on repeated viewing who doesn't instinctively cringe when she breaks his foot. A testament to the effectiveness of the film.
The other thing is, and you were spot on, in the book, it's made clear that while she was spying him at the Silver Creek Motel, she took the occasion to tamper with his car breaks which is why she knew he'd have the accident.
Book Annie is straight off the bat a violent and unhinged psycho, Kathy Bates did a much more nuanced portrayal of her and she absolutely killed the role.
    James Caan was also outstanding.
So impressed was Stephen King that he wrote the 1992 psychological drama Dolores Clairbone with Kathy Bates in mind and she did appear in the cinematic adaptation in 1995 (worth watching).
Another movie you should watch with her is the one she starred in after Misery, in 1991, Fried Green Tomatoes.
Beautiful movie, I'm sure you'll love it.
Her role is so different in it that you'd be hard pressed to believe it's the same actress which is just another proof of her immense talent.

Yay, Mary is back! I love you Mary! And I love Misery too 😎❤ My dad showed it to me and I love it now. Also, for the next reaction video, I would recommend you either Cobra (1986) or Over the top (1987). Besides Rambo, these are my favorite Sylvester Stallone’s movies 😍

Great reaction Mary. It featured one of THE classic 'urghh those legs look so bad' faces in Misery reaction history at '5:09', And also some wonderful 'I'm so anxious, I'm going to hide my hands up the arms of my jumper' moments, and the tangible looks of glee every time one of Paul Sheldon's cunning plans became evident. And forgive me for observing that, "Heavens to Betsy, the colour of your jumper is very hectic!' 🤷‍♂

I'm glad you finally got to see this movie and enjoyed it. And I'm happy you noticed that Rob Reiner directed it. He was on a very hot streak at the time. You need to also check out his classic romantic comedy "When Harry Met Sally" (1989) which came out just before and his superb courtroom drama "A Few Good Men" (1992) which came out just after. Thank s again for the entertaining commentary, as always.

🩸Stephen King was so impressed by Kathy Bates performance that he wrote two more roles for her, including the title role of "Dolores Claiborne" (1995). I remember watching this for the first time in Philadelphia in December of 1990, one of the very first movies I've ever watched in a movie theatre and the house was packed... I remember the screams and shouts from the audience as Kathy Bates went crazy on Paul Shelton... they went wild‼ 🔨🩸😮

Rob Reiner had a pretty versatile filmography. He did a fantasy film with Princess Bride, coming of age drama with Stand By Me, comedy with Spinal Tap, romance with When Harry Met Sally, thriller with this and the list goes on. And they’re all fantastic.

The suspension is even better in the book, when he's struggling to get back to the room, they have like sports commentators giving commentary on if he will make it. There's a great audible on the book!

We did the stage version of Misery last year and the hobbling scene was hard to figure out how to do safely but thanks to some fake feet and a hidden compartment in the bed we absolutely scarred our audiences. Even the ones who knew it was coming couldn’t figure out how we did it.

I was told by a sign language interpreter that apparently a great many deaf people find the hobbling scene absolutely hilarious instead of horrifying. Perhaps having to do with the highly visual nature of the scene? Not exactly sure. It gave me nightmares.

Kathy Bates deserved every single bit of praise she got for this film. What an incredible performance. She gave real substance to the character. When it's raining and Annie's depressed. She's a very sick, sad woman who seriously needs mental help. She's not just crazy to be scary. There are layers to Annie. Dolores Claiborne is another great Stephen King based film starring Kathy Bates. Kathy said that one is her personal favorite role.

Rob Reiner also directed "Stand by Me" (1986) also based on a Stephen King short story.
He also directed the mockumentary "This is Spinal Tap" (1984) which I just found out a few moments ago.

Rob Riener also did " This Is Spinal Tap " - " When Harry Met Sally " - " Stand By Me ( another Stephen King story ) but its actually called " The Body " in the book.
