But when my 12 year old started watching Gremlins 2 he just looked confused and said “what the actual hell?” When the gremlin grew wings he just said “that’s it, I’m done” and went to play on his PS4 instead! I could sympathise with him really.

A classic. Saw it in 84 when I was 9, and was nervous/tense but not super scared. The original script was even darker/deadly, but toned it down a bit for kids. In the original script the the Gremlins would have killed the dog and the Dad. The town film set is the same used in Back to the Future and many others and tv series.
I was about 5 when I first saw this movie and have loved it ever since. I was also a fan of classic hollywood monster and Godzilla movies as a kid so this was right up my alley.
Ms. Deagle was also based on the wicked witch of the East from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Especially in the beginning as she hunts down Billy/Dorothy to take away their dog.
@@rubensalvador9422 Something I didn't realize until I was an adult. That line in the bank about taking the dog and putting it to sleep is like a direct quote from Wizard of Oz, I think.
This reaction was a lot of fun and to answer your question. I was 4 or 5 years old when i first watched this movie and no i wasn't scared. I thought the gremlins were hilarious, my favorite scene is when they're in the bar getting drunk and causing chaos. Thanks for the entertaining content. Merry Christmas and happy new year.
On The 16th, myself and my best friend went to see a 40th anniversary re-release of 'Gremlins' at my local cinema, just the two of us, the whole screening to ourselves, her being a hardcore gremlins fan like myself, it was good. Gremlins being her favourite Christmas movie, seeing it on the big screen, I was glad she witnessed it👍🌲
When this came out, I was 4, and we had cable and a few of the premium channels at the time. This movie was in heavy rotation, so I ended up watching this a lot. It scared the shit outta me, but I loved it. Admittedly, I needed a nightlight for several years after watching it.
The dad was a legendary country/blues singer in the 60's and 70's, who also had some funny songs and told funny stories during his concerts. His name was Hoyt Axton. He ended up doing some guest spots on TV shows in the 80's, but he usually played this same general type of character. If you want to give his music a try, start with Jealous Man, You're the Hangnail in my Life, and Della and the Dealer.
@GarrettJayChristian i remember when I discovered Alien vs. Predator in 2004 but then found about Alien in 2006, but I wasn't old enough to watch Horror movies, but I saw Monster House as my first drive-in theater movie for my 9th birthday
The concept of the gremlin creature was from the British Royal Airforce during WWII. Every time something went wrong in a plane they blamed it on gremlins.
i can't remember when i first watched this movie, i can just remember that i absolutely LOVED the super destructive humor of the gremlins. i have watched this and the sequel countless times. admittedly, the burning head in the fire was a little creepy, when i was very little, but other than that... it fueled my interest in movies and special effects.
I was 11 when I saw this in the theater. I am now a seasoned horror vet, but this movie is one of only two that have ever given me bad dreams. The scene where the Gremlins come marching out of the shadows in the snow lived in my head rent free.
In 1984 I was an usher in a theater when this came out, I lost track of how many traumatized children came out in the lobby, crying about the fact that Santa Claus didn’t exist… Good times😂
You really gotta love the mom in this film. Like, as soon as she heard them torturing Gizmo and saw them eating her gingerbread men, she was so totally ready to go into battle armed with a knife, table, and her dodgy kitchen appliances. Also, the reason everyone in the town hated Mrs Deagle, is because she pretty much owned all their houses through her control over their mortgages and her investments in the bank and other businesses. Also, she was apparently going to sell off the town and have it flattened for a business investment, until the gremlins got to her first.
Gremlins always make it look like an accident... the myth goes way back. In WW2 pilots used to talk about Gremlins taking down airplanes... and there was a famous episode of The Twilight Zone about a guy seeing Gremlins on the wing of an airplane... "there's a thing... a thing on the wing!"
I grew up watching & loving this movie and was TODAY years old when I made the connection that the actress playing Mrs. Deagle also played Flo on the show Alice (“kiss my grits!”). Mind blown!
One Christmas movie that doubles as a horror movie , back when it was released there wasn't any social media so people went in blind expecting a kid's movie along the lines of E.T imagine their surprise i personally loved it since i 'm a horror buff Wishing you a Merry Cherry Christmas !! 🎄❤💚 blessings to you and yours 🙏
I first watched this movie when I was 7 or so and it really freaked me out back then, so much so that Do You Hear WhatI Hear still makes me just a little anxious even to this day.
Mary, remember that one Gremlin you noticed in the wig at the card table at the bar? DId that wig of red hair look familiar? Bc it should, lol. It's wearing the red wig, a fancy hat, lipstick, earrings & a mink shawl.. It's all Mrs. Deagle's stuff!! 🤣🤣 That's the one that was in her house & messed with her chair that led to her death. He then stole her belongings, put 'em on & went for a night out on the town. Lmao! They even refer to it as 'Deagle Gremlin', lol..
The town of this film is at Universal Studios in LA and it’s the same town in Back To The Future clovk tower. Also the shop where he gets Gizmo is in the studio as well by the clock tower
I was 5 years old when my parents let me watch it back in the 80s. We also had these vinyl 45's that was a short audiobook version of the story you listened to while looking at a book of the story.
I was 3 when I saw Gremlins in theater! Also saw Ghostbusters right around the same time! Also that year, Poltergeist was the first movie we ever rented when my dad bought our first BetaMax player! We were built different in the 80s!
Some Gremlins facts: 1) Gremlins was based on a Warner Brothers cartoon, which itself was based on a book by Roald Dahl. 2) The film was written by Chris Columbus, wwho went on to direct the first two Home Alone films and the first two Harry Potter films. 3) Hoyt Axton, Billy's dad wrote Three Dog Night's chart-topper Joy To The World. 4) Gremlins was released in cinemas the same day as Ghostbusters. 5) The dog actor who played Barney was called Mushroom in real life.
You definitely gotta watch the sequel to this now sometime, Mary. It's my favorite of the two & it's absolutely insane, lol.. Makes fun of itself, breaks the 4th wall, has tropes & cameos, pokes fun at everything from the 3 rules to the production company itself, has a cartoon intro & all this amazing looking puppetry.. It's great..
Yeah, the original script was pure horror. For example, when Billy comes home to save his mom, in the original script he only finds her decapitated head. But they changed the tone fairly quickly into production, IIRC before they even started filming.
I saw this when I was 6 or 7. I was raised on horror movies, born in '79. Movies like Witchcraft, The Howling, Hellraiser, Ghoulies, Phantasm, etc... before I was 10. I was always taught that these are movies and are not real and watched for the effect work. I was a latchkey kid in elementary school and up, where I got myself up, dressed, fed, and out of the house to school before my single mother got up for work. Fangoria and Mad magazine were my lifelines. I know a lot of other kids who were in similar situations. Many of us had to grow up much faster than kids seem to today. Which is probably both good and bad in their own ways. Gremlins 2 is my favorite though. Some people don't like it but I adore it for what the writer and director decided to do.
He was also in Friday the 13th the Final Chapter, The Burbs, The Fox and The Hound and he did the voice of Donatello in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the Movie.
In WW2, gremlins were to machines as bugs are to software. Some unknown problem happening with your airplane; there must be a gremlin in the engine. Hence the movie's focus on machines and gadgets (and gizmos).
I first saw this movie when i was around 6 or 7, i wasn't afraid of the gremlins i thought they were funny, but my local Disney shop did have life sized versions of gremlins up in the rafters looking down which would scare me so much i wouldn't go into the shop 😂
I was 9 years old and I watched this with my 6 year old brother and my mom. I remember it was a bit scary at first, but by the time they were dressing up and doing mischief, we were laughing and enjoying it.
Mr. Futterman (the snowplow driver)is played by the extremely prolific character actor Dick Miller. IMDb lists 185 acting credits over 64 years. Joe Dante used him in practically every movie he directed. And his character actually survived this movie and shows up in the sequel.
This movie had some major reshoots during production. Originally, it was a straight up horror with the gremlins actually killing the dog and the mother and Gizmo and Stripe being the same character. You’ll notice that no one actually said Stripe’s name on camera and the dog and the mother just disappeared from the main plot for most of the movie.
@michaelrobitaille2335 that was one of the reshot scenes. The mother was supposed to die after the Christmas Tree. Billy was supposed to come home to find a gremlin rolling her head down the stairs.
I remember back in the 80s, my cousins went to see this film at the cinema. And their little sister tagged along. Surprisingly, the little sister was really scared of the mogwai. And that was even before the gremlins made an appearance. They were forced to leave the cinema fairly early because supposedly, the sister couldn't cope. So they never actually got to see any gremlins on screen.
Gremlins might seem a bit outdated now, but as a kid in the 80s, it was just a fun movie. It was not very scary to me. Lots of movies are set around Christmas time without actually being a Christmas movie. You can watch this at Halloween time. It is more gross than scary.
Another of my childhood favorites. Although, I am one who actually prefers the sequel. It’s just so much fun! Thanks for sharing your reaction. Happy Holidays!
Hey Mary, hope u r enjoying this holiday season.😊 I was a couple of months shy of my twelfth.birthday when I saw this in the theater. My parents had taken me & my younger siblings to see it. I remember my brother (8 1/2 at the time) & I loved it, especially Gizmo. My brother did like Stripe, but he usually liked the villians, like Darth Vader being his favorite STAR WARS character. I think my younger sisters were scared of the gremlins, but can't remember if they cried. They loved Gizmo. My mom complained "That ending was gross." 😂 I remember for days my brother & I kept taking turns acting out the Stripe melting scene, much to the annoyance of my mother.😄 We took turns shining a flashlight on one another, & then pretend to melt.😄 Fun times!😊 My brother was given a Stripe toy for his birthday later that year. My parents gave my younger sister a Gizmo plushy for Christmas, also that year. Anyway, that's all I can really remember about my 1st time seeing the movie.
The small town is the same backlot that was used in "Back To The Future", dressed up to look wintery. And, you may have noticed, all of Mrs. Deagle's cats are named after units of currency.
The little kid is Corey Feldman, the actor now turned musician. You can find him on a lot of movies… such as The Goonies, the kid in the tv show Madame’s Place, the kid in the tv show The Bad News Bears, the voice of Donatello in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Stand By Me. Mrs. Deagle is playing an uncharacteristically stern woman. I remember her from the hit tv series immediately before this called Alice.
Corey Feldman is in four all-time classic 80s movies. "Gremlins". "The Goonies". "Stand By Me". "The Lost Boys". Also, Mary, I would enjoy seeing you react to "Gremlins 2".
I was about 6 when this came out and my mum took me to see it, after the Gremlins hatched I hid under my mum black jersey and had nightmares for years. One of my favourite movies/x-mas movies of all time :P

Ms. Deagle named her cats after different currency (Dollar Bill, Kopeck...)🤣
She was scrooged
funnily enough i named my cat Mogwai after these movies. i call that a win over that Deagle hag😂
@@AlsoCuteAndFLUFFY True, I also think that naming cats after money slang (c-note, sawbuck, fat stack, etc...) would be awesome.🤣
I was 11 years old when Gremlins came out at the cinema - I'd been told it was horror, but I found it hilarious!
I was eight when I saw this in theaters in 1984. I wasn't scared. I thought it was neat. Gen X kids were made of stern stuff.
one of the cutest and most wholesome Christmas movies indeed!
Gremlins being her favourite Christmas movie, seeing it on the big screen, I was glad she witnessed it👍🌲
I'm 41 now, I was 9 when I first saw it. Loved it ever since
When this came out, I was 4, and we had cable and a few of the premium channels at the time. This movie was in heavy rotation, so I ended up watching this a lot. It scared the shit outta me, but I loved it. Admittedly, I needed a nightlight for several years after watching it.
This movie, along with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, are why we have PG-13 movies. 😊
We 80s kids were made of sterner stuff.
He also wrote Three Dog Night's "Joy to the World" and Steppenwolf's "I'm Your Pusher."
He also had a small role in "The Black Stallion" as Alec Ramsey's father.
Gremlins is a good classic. Fun Fact during the 70s 80s and 90s there were Toys Targeted for kids based on R Rated Movies,
I still have xenomorph dreams to this day from the footage in the _Aliens_ toy commercials when I was 7 years old. 😅
I got to see Alien when I was 3 because the toys made my parents think it was a kids movie, Loved it! Those figures were pretty special to me
@GarrettJayChristian i remember when I discovered Alien vs. Predator in 2004 but then found about Alien in 2006, but I wasn't old enough to watch Horror movies, but I saw Monster House as my first drive-in theater movie for my 9th birthday
@Fatrocka64TH-cam my first theater movie that I can remember was Jurassic Park, and it was at a drive in!
@TheCryptofHorrors-DerCryptaxis my first movie theater experience was Dinosaur. The one Disney movie from 2000
The concept of the gremlin creature was from the British Royal Airforce during WWII. Every time something went wrong in a plane they blamed it on gremlins.
i can't remember when i first watched this movie, i can just remember that i absolutely LOVED the super destructive humor of the gremlins. i have watched this and the sequel countless times.
admittedly, the burning head in the fire was a little creepy, when i was very little, but other than that... it fueled my interest in movies and special effects.
oh, and well... kate's out-of-nowhere darkness was also kind of weird. yes, gremlins sometimes kill people, but that's still on another level.
Folklore:
The myth of gremlins may have originated in the 1920s as a way for airmen to explain unexplained mechanical problems in their aircraft.
I was 11 when I saw this in the theater. I am now a seasoned horror vet, but this movie is one of only two that have ever given me bad dreams. The scene where the Gremlins come marching out of the shadows in the snow lived in my head rent free.
Nice to see you so very happy at the end, Mary. And Merry Christmas to you too!
They were foreign investors making her an offer she couldn't refuse
As a nine year old child when this came out, I had a huge collection of trading cards depicting shots from this movie.
This movie gave me a crush on Phoebe Cates.
It was this movie not fast times at ridgmont high? Lol
Did you want to show her your ... chimney?
Surely you've see Fast Times at Ridgemont High?
@johnsinclair4448 that's what I'm saying lol 😆
I think with most guys it was Fast Times at Ridge😛
I grew up watching & loving this movie and was TODAY years old when I made the connection that the actress playing Mrs. Deagle also played Flo on the show Alice (“kiss my grits!”). Mind blown!
One Christmas movie that doubles as a horror movie , back when it was released there wasn't any social media so people went in blind expecting a kid's movie along the lines of E.T imagine their surprise i personally loved it since i 'm a horror buff
Wishing you a Merry Cherry Christmas !! 🎄❤💚
blessings to you and yours 🙏
Good catch.
The town of this film is at Universal Studios in LA and it’s the same town in Back To The Future clovk tower. Also the shop where he gets Gizmo is in the studio as well by the clock tower
The final shot of this movie would make an awesome Christmas card or Christmas album cover.
I was 5 years old when my parents let me watch it back in the 80s. We also had these vinyl 45's that was a short audiobook version of the story you listened to while looking at a book of the story.
They were Little Golden Books, I have all 4 of those
@@TheCryptofHorrors-DerCryptaxisWe had & still have some of those Little Golden books, but I don't remember any of them having to do w/GREMLINS.
It came out June 8, 1984… the exact same day that Ghostbusters did
I was 3 when I saw Gremlins in theater! Also saw Ghostbusters right around the same time! Also that year, Poltergeist was the first movie we ever rented when my dad bought our first BetaMax player! We were built different in the 80s!
Some Gremlins facts:
1) Gremlins was based on a Warner Brothers cartoon, which itself was based on a book by Roald Dahl.
I can't believe you released this three days before xmas. When i was little something horrible happened three days before xmas.
I watched this in the theater when I was 7 years old and absolutly loved it. It is still one of my favorite movies.
Corey Feldman is also in The Lost Boys (1987).
_License To Drive_ (1988)
He was also in Friday the 13th the Final Chapter, The Burbs, The Fox and The Hound and he did the voice of Donatello in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the Movie.
@@2apocalypse-X The point is, for months, I've been trying to find the one thing that can get her to watch The Lost Boys (1987). It's a running joke.
Love your work 😉😁
Saw this in the theater when it first came out. I was 8 and I loved it
I was 9 years old and I watched this with my 6 year old brother and my mom.
Actually Billy mentioned Stripe being the leader after the Christmas Tree incident.
@michaelrobitaille2335 that was one of the reshot scenes. The mother was supposed to die after the Christmas Tree. Billy was supposed to come home to find a gremlin rolling her head down the stairs.
Haha glad you enjoyed! Gremlins 2 is absolutely wild, totally brilliant sequel 🙏
Hi Mary, Glad you enjoyed the film. Best Wishes for A Merry Xmas & A Happy New Year for you, your family & your other Subscribers & commentators !!
I watched this movie when I was like 6 years old. To this day "Do you hear what I hear" is the creepiest Christmas song to me.
Hahaha I thought the same thing when I was a kid 😂
Sorry to hear u were traumatized for life by a Christmas song.
He didn't say "ride bike," he said "light bright."
I always thought he said "bright light".
Hey Mary, hope u r enjoying this holiday season.😊
I was a couple of months shy of my twelfth.birthday when I saw this in the theater. My mom complained "That ending was gross." 😂 I remember for days my brother & I kept taking turns acting out the Stripe melting scene, much to the annoyance of my mother.😄 We took turns shining a flashlight on one another, & then pretend to melt.😄 Fun times!😊
My brother was given a Stripe toy for his birthday later that year.
5 years old when I saw it and yes I was terrified. Now its one of my favorite movies. Also its totally a Christmas movie.
“Don’t get them wet”
Gives access to snow
But for real, the main theme is pure fire
Iconic soundtrack!
I was 10 when this hit theaters. It was the huge movie of that time! It was scary as much as it was funny. I still watch it every Christmas.
Corey Feldman is in four all-time classic 80s movies.
"Gremlins".
"The Goonies".
"Stand By Me".
"The Lost Boys".
Also, Mary, I would enjoy seeing you react to "Gremlins 2".
Also, the best of the Friday the 13th movies, Part 4 the Final Chapter.
@@rexmundi2986 Wait, don't be talking crazy. "Friday The 13th 6, 7th, and Jason X are right there."
"if he finds water, it will all start over again" says the guy standing in a village complety covered in snow.
I was 10. Saw it in the theater with my buddies, and no one was scared. We all loved it. Great flick!
I was about 6 when this came out and my mum took me to see it, after the Gremlins hatched I hid under my mum black jersey and had nightmares for years. One of my favourite movies/x-mas movies of all time :P
