Kathy Bates said that they were having a hard time casting a male actor pretending to be immobile for a long time AND being outshadowed by his female counterpart. They had approached basically now all older actors : Harrison Ford, Deniro, Morgan Freeman EVERYONE and they all say no. All respect to James Caan for taking on this role.
They also had approached Al Pacino, Michael Douglas, Kevin Kline, Dustin Hoffman, Richard Dreyfuss, Gene Hackman, Robert Redford, and William Hunt (two separate times). Warren Beatty wanted to do the role, but had to pass on the offer because of post-production issues with the Dick Tracy movie. But yes, I feel that no one could have played Paul quite the way James Caan did.
Any time a person is adamantly against cursing, I think it’s because they are hiding some horribly perverse inclinations, and that prejudice is all thanks to Annie Wilkes lmao
both Kathy Bates and James Caan give ALL TIME performances in this movie, Kathy especially!! she earned every inch of that oscar statue that's for sure
The literary agent is the legendary, Lauren Bacall. She has one of the most famous lines in film history, "You know how to whistle don't you? You just put your lips together and blow..." That line was from the movie "To Have and Have Not" (1944) that she stared in with Humphrey Bogart when she was only 19. While filming they started a love affair and then later the two got married in 1945. They were married until his death in 1957. Such an iconic old Hollywood couple. Even though this is such a small cast, it is a magnificent one. Every actor and actress...amazing.
Always thought it strange she was considered one of the Hollywood glamour girls. I mean, she's very attractive nut she's light years away from Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth and the like.
_The Hand that Rocks the Cradle_ is another great early 90s horror/thriller too (don't think I've seen anyone react to that one yet). Great video boys! 💛
The literary agent is LAUREN BACALL. She was a legendary old Hollywood actress who was in alot of Noir films in the 40's with HUMPHREY BOGART. She was also a recurring character in THE SOPRANOS
Great taste! 😃 Fun thing is, Stephen King wrote "Dolores Claiborne" with Kathy Bates in mind, hoping one day the book would become a movie starred by her. And it worked 😄
It’s crazy how the book is even sicker than the movie, read it as a teen. Great book, great metaphor for Stephen King’s addiction struggles and the possible dangers of fame and obsession .
She can do super hero and super villian equally well. She was definitely the Hollywood darling that year. So iconic for us horror geeks in so many other projects. Loving mother and evil stepmother at the flick of a switch.
The ‘hobbling’ scene in the book is actually much more graphic. In the novel, she cuts off one of his feet with an ax, and then cauterizes the wound with a blow torch.
I've always said that if there was a mystery TV series of Buster and Virginia solving crimes in their little neck of the woods, I would absolutely watch the HELL out of that show
Congratulations on finally getting to watch this amazing movie. 😁👍 This is the kind of movie that makes you expect more from other movies. Dolores Claiborne should be next on your list of Stephen King and Kathy Bates cinematic brilliance " Justice for Baxter!!" Lol it's Buster 😘
This was such a great and fun reaction! This movie is an absolute classic. Buster's death still infuriates me every time. I love him and his cute little wife/deputy! 😆😭
Kathy won the Oscar for this. Loved Richard Farnsworth as “Buster” not Baxter…hahaha. I loved them too. Great couple and I hated that he got killed. Kathy and Jimmy Caan were great. Love her in Delores Claiborne too. That hobbling scene though…..argh!
Now you guys gotta watch S2 of Castle Rock. Janis Ian from Mean girls (Lizzie Caplan) plays Annie Wilkes and she does a pretty good job and it’s so fascinating watching this take of her origin story.
Buster is such a great addition to the movie. Being that the book is in Paul’s perspective; that character isn’t in the book. And when an officer comes in the book it goes…. differently😳 But I love the character in the movie!
The first time I saw this film I couldn’t sleep at all the night after watching it. It was so chilling but I couldn’t stop watching. Kathy Bates absolutely earned that Oscar and this film is just so good. Your guys reaction to Sheriff Busters death was literally the same as me. He was the last person I was expecting to die, and it broke my heart. The hobbling scene makes my stomach twist but from what I’ve heard from the book we got at least a little bit of a more tame version of that scene
What i love so much about kathy bates in this movie is that her switches from this absolutely sweet seaming woman to crazy and genuinely terrifying don't seem cartoonish or over the top. You actually feel like the author is in danger during the movie because Kathy's character actually seems crazy and not a caricature
Mr King is a master of his craft, he knows how to draw you in and make you feel like you are there when you are reading his books. I very much suggest reading Misery, you will be glad you did. Kathy Bates and James Caan were not short of amazing in this film and Kathy deserved to win the oscar for her role
king said that his original idea for a ending was for annie to kill paul and bind her new misery book in his skin. i think she would have fed his carcass to her pig, but i cant remember if he said that or i imagined it.
Agreed on everything. It is a perfect movie. And I was so happy when Kathy won her best actress oscar. The legendary James Caan plays Paul. He's amazing and died just last year.
I was just introduced to y’all yesterday and I’ve been binging your videos ever since 😂😂 but this is one of my all time favorites and I’m so excited to see that this is a recent upload
I always thought that last scene was brilliant. Paul's "Misery" novels were popular and even though he killed off Misery, he's still gonna have random people telling Paul: "I'm your no.1 fan," unaware of his trauma (unless he eventually does write a book about it). I even imagine some will be confrontational about him killing off "Misery." Moving on from his trauma won't be easy.
As others said, Kathy Bates won an Oscar for her performance as well as a Golden Globe and several awards from critics groups too. The fact that she won the Oscar was interesting because it was a tough year with a lot of good performances..... Misery came out the same year as Dances with Wolves, Ghost, Goodfellas, Pretty Woman and Postcards from the Edge.
James Caan did a great job and deserves a lot of credit for his performance, but Kathy Bates' performance is nothing short of incredible. I don't think anyone could've nailed this the way she did. It's not just the acting ability, but it's knowing what you're trying to portray. I don't know where she drew inspiration from, but I've known people like Annie, and I've never seen anyone capture it like this. I'm glad she won an oscar for this, because she 100% deserved it.
That comment "Why not throw the typewriter on her?!?" was classic! 😆 You two made me smile and laugh so often during this delightful reaction video, and I also really enjoyed revisiting this fantastic film. Plus you're both adorable! Thanks for such a fun experience. Btw, the actor that plays the cop (your spirit animal lol) also played Matthew Cuthbert in the movie "Anne of Green Gables", starring Megan Follows 😀
This may be older but there’s no movie like this…most Stephen King books (I’ve read a million of them) translate awkwardly to film but this one is perfection
The barbz doing this to nicki as a remake would be so GOOD. Ya'll are genuineness. Also I have been saying "HE DIDN'T GET OUT OF THE COCKADOODIE CAR!!!" for years. It's such an iconic line.
This is really one of the classics as horror movies go^^ I want to suggest you two horror films that go in very unexpected directions: El orfanato by Juan Antonio Bayona The cabin in the woods by Drew Goddard I am confident you will love them both. And continue the great reactions guys. When my financials will allow it, you'll have a new patreon member^^
I just had this thought that Annie and Paul's hostage relationship reminded me so much of Nica and Tiffany in season 2 of Chucky. Though I do wish that one day, Nica gets the upper hand on Tiffany
I’m new to your channel but I’ve watched soooo many videos in the past couple of days because I’m a huge horror fan but I don’t actually get scared any longer because I’ve seen that many. I still appreciate the scariness but it’s a different kind of feeling. So now I can live vicariously through you guys and enjoy you being scared at all the films that I enjoyed immensely. There is one film that I won’t watch because I don’t think I can handle the level of bleakness (as someone spoiled it for me) but it is supposed to be phenomenally good, so if you guys can stomach it I would recommend Speak No Evil, the foreign language film, before they finish the American remake and somehow make it easier to watch.
The writer who played Paul also played the character Sunny in the godfather movies. I always like the actor who played Buster. Sadly he committed the S word he had cancer in real life.
26:22 she actually did win the oscar for best actress because of this performance !
And the Golden Globe I think?
Kathy Bates is gold.
They really couldn’t handle being overshadowed by a woman 💀
no way harrison ford or morgan freeman would have pulled off that role so well lol maybe deniro
The hobbling scene is worse in the book because Annie actually cuts off one of his feet instead breaking both his ankles.
I didn't know that ._.
@@StevieMcKenna10 Yeah, Stephen King is no joke
I would love to see y'all react to Carrie and to Castle Rock!
@@mercuriallady And The Stand (the 1990s one, not the lame remake). One of my favorite books and miniseries.

Kathy won an Oscar for this role. While onstage she told the crowd "Sorry about the ankles"....LOL
"she seems so sweet. how lucky..." 🙊

I love the Sheriff and his wife in this movie they're so cute.
When I'm watching this movie, " I'm enjoying myself. Thank you!" They really are cute together
20:15 I literally laughed out loud when the split screen with Annie listing items she does for Paul 🤣🤣🤣

The Horror Band Wagon, I'm your number 1 fan. ❤
But in all seriousness this movie is SO GOOD! THANK YOU FOR THE REACTION. ❤
This movie has only aged better and better with how entitled and parasocial people have gotten over celebrities.
