Because better graphics is more marketable than fps. Look at bf3 vs mw3, ea decided to prioritize graphics over fps where Activision did the opposite thus bf3 earned more hype.
Except that BF3 released on hilarously outdated consoles with 24 players per server because they couldn't handle more.
On PC, that problem was non existant.

That's not the point. Console gaming will stick to 30 fps. Even with ps5. Gaming to big CEO is business and console is the biggest market, people will freak out over graphics and not so much about fps.

Xavier Roberts I assume you talk about MSAA? There are cheap image-based AA solutions nowadays like FXAA and SMAA which provides reasonable AA without stressing the hardware. You'll still see temporal shimmering but not as distracting on a handheld screen.
After playing like 20 hours of Breath of the Wild, Nintendo proves to me that graphics doesnt really mean much if the game is really fun to play. Literally cant put the controller away. With that said I still think the visual artstyle looks amazing

It's not about the graphics, it's about gameplay!... until the processing power in the console hinders your gameplay during a huge boss fight. Great stuff.

The handheld mode appears much better than the docked in person, due to the much higher pixel density.
In docked mode it runs up to 60fps at least. I was astounded when I got my first dock and was able to play the shrine parts in perfect 60fps. My switch is a launch day switch gifted to me by my best friend for free with bad joycon drift and a broken fan. Fixed both issues and now I have a fully functional OG switch and it only costed me under $20 to fix haha. But I say that for context, I didn't have a dock for the first few months of owning it and it overheated after about 30-60 minutes of gameplay, plus bad joycon drift. Somehow I was still enjoying BOTW and when I fully fixed it, it was so rewarding, it was like beholding a technological miracle haha.
Why am i watching this 5 years after release and over 300 hours of gameplay? Because I love this game!

This game slowed to a crawl while docked when I was running through the woods of the Great Plateau with the light shinning through the canopy, the tall grass and trees swaying in the wind and the appropriate shadows to go with. It was a beautiful moment marred by hardware limitations.

That just shows the massive hypocrisy and the downright lying from the self proclaimed "Critics" that is fucking over the entire gaming industry.
A game that has so much technical issues, can never be a 10/10. Every legit Critic would cut their throat first.
I decided to run a little experiment that apparently no one has thought about, since nobody has mentioned it. The TV resolution output can be changed in the Switch settings. The options are 1080p, 720p and 480p (no 900p for some reason). I decided to compare the game running docked at 720p vs handheld. Interestingly, even at 720p output you can see the same frame rate drops in the same areas as at 1080p in docked mode. This tells me that either the game is hadcoded to render at 900p in docked mode and then scaling it up or down for output, which might be necessary in order to keep the seamless transition between the two modes, and to avoid the issues and delays you usually see in most PC games when you change the resolution while the game is running, since you can do that exact same thing on the Switch, but there's absolutely no hiccups.
The other option is that it can actually be optimized to run better, given that it actually switches resolutions on the fly and completely seamlessly when switching modes.
I get that this game started on the WiiU and had to be ported to the Switch kind of late into the development process, and it's a massive, taxing game, so Nintendo actually made a fantastic job in making this a launch game for new hardware, given that it actually runs a lot better on Switch than on WiiU (I know, I've played both versions, and the difference is huge). The team probably switched focus from the WiiU version to the Switch version, giving higher priority to the latter, giving it more polish, and neglecting the WiiU version a bit. I'm sure the Switch is capable of so much more, and we'll see that potential better exploited with future games tailor-made and optimized for the system (as is the case with every other system).
I hope this proves useful, or at least informative, to you guys. Keep the analyses coming!

I don't understand how a channel devoted to video game technology have a comment section that is so completely technologically illiterate.
I've seen seen people claim these are PS2 level graphics (what kind of monster of a PS2 do you have?). I've seen people claim that 'cartoon' graphics are less demanding than 'realistic' graphics (they're not, not necessarily anyways). There are people ignorant of the fact that the Switch is a mobile console. There are people who don't understand that a massive open world game will have lower texture resolution than a closed linear game running on similar hardware. There are people who don't understand that framerate and resolution are decisions the developers make.
Playstation fanboys are the biggest hypocrites on the face of the planet. They don't understand that I don't give a shit about 4K or whatever marketing gimmick Sony is pushing out now, but they scurry away once I start comparing the PS4 Pro to even my PC.
Zelda looks great, and I find it amazing that a game of this scope and fidelity is running on an oversized Gameboy.

Ghost Geist it's a Wii U port that's not fully optimized for the switch. They were developed simultaneously and do you know how hard that can be especially since the hardware is different between the two? Look at horizon zero dawn, that runs at 30fps too..

This is interesting... But to be honest, while actually playing... The game is such a masterpiece, one of the best things Nintendo has ever done, I get so lost in the world, in the adventure that I don't even think about graphics or framerates or anything.... The game is magical, breathtaking, surprises you constantly... it's actually not only my favorite Zelda game, but also my favorite open world game ever... I know, that's insane to say, I just can't believe how good this game is... It makes the entire Switch feel like something very special... Best launch of any system in a long long time, love the downloadable games too, there are actually a ton of good games!
Anon 4ever i have all the systems, zelda has been scoring perfect 10s almost everywhere. It's a masterpiece, if you dismiss that because you don't like Nintendo then that's fanboyism as you put it :) the game is breathtaking. And it's not an ugly game at all, the artstyle, the animation, the weather, the mist settling, the moon breaking through the trees... it is a beautiful game! But hey I also play retro games, so i'm not one of those people who MUST play something that's technically state of the art and dismiss everything else... I'm sick of that, THAT is fanboyism.. it's not all about the technical, it's the feeling of the game! just wanted to point out that the "portable" pictures have some artifact due to the picture compression method of the switch, without a direct video feed this test if quite difficult, great job DF with the comparison, been imparcial at all moment, but that's a fact to keep in consideration.

I game on a 60" TV. And Im not gonna play that Zelda game on the console. It literally hurts to look at. The massive amount of screen flickering is disturbing to say the least.
Emulation will save this game. I don't have a problem waiting another 6-12 months down the line to play it.
That's if you're willing to spend 800-1,200 usd for a decent gaming computer and even then there is no guarantee that the emulation will be spot on.

I agree nostalgia is common with Nintendo fans, but I reject that it's a factor here. Breath of the Wild is so different from any past game. It really has taken open-world games to a new level, there's nothing old about it. In game design, it's absolutely cutting-edge, really. I'm in awe of it.

I find it odd that playing it undocked gives you the most stable frame rate. I wonder what is happening when it is docked that is causing the frame rate to drop so much. I would have thought it to be the total opposite. I thought docked would have stable frame rate but undocked would have some drops. Hopefully they'll figure it out cause I would want to play this more docked than undocked.
More pollen and fog in the air and more audio queues exist when you play the game on TV. On the small screen, Nintendo removes some sounds and beautiful graphical effects. It is the same situation on the OLED screen

I am quite impressed with how this game runs in mobile mode and have played it for MANY hours like that. It's an awesome game and the fact that i've been able to easily play it in many different locations is worth the price of admission.
Great video as always. I hope a patch can fix this odd problem. If not 3rd party developers may just take the easy route and make all the games 720p and that may prevent the frame drops altogether but at the expense of sharpness.

It's a handheld with HDMI out. 'Hybrid' refers to how it can played, but it's tech is 100% mobile tech.
Oh ok so I guess the PSP was a hybrid because it could be played on a big TV via component cable. Justify how weak the Switch is how ever you want. Nintendo clearly has marketed this system as a portable home console, not a portable console that can be played on a home TV. Whenever the Switch was shown off before it's release, it was shown as a home console first, then shown how it could be portable. It's marketed as taking your home games on the go. The difference between the PSP and the Switch is that the PSP's visuals were exactly the same when hooked to a TV. The Switch dock boosts the power of the Switch by telling the GPU to boost the clocks in order to look better on a TV. It's not just an HDMI output.
All other games with better graffic are 1080/60fps ;)

About the mip-map filtering line, might it not be the case that render resolution is actually the only difference? Texture filtering goes hand in hand with resolution, "the same" polygon, but displayed with more pixels, is likelier to sample from a higher resolution mip level, causing the line to be further away.

As a mostly PC player I really like the way Nintendo designed their new console - instead of releasing yet another castrated and limited PC they decided to deliver a portable console which is also capable of playing games on a TV screen. Will probably get one after a few more games are available.

honestly the map looks shit, it looks like random hills with objects thrown on top, and at least in the first area, too much reused colours and assets, although i can't fully pass judgement, as this may only be a smaller area that doesn't represent the whole map.

How did this game get 98 on metacritic? Empty as fuck world and a lot of repetitiveness in puzzles, re skinned and similar looking dungeon bosses. I smell paid reviews. It looks like a great game but not 98 in my opinion.

Even though zelda is created by Nintendo. That was the switch not the game, there are many things wrong with the switch such as it being underpowered and once again, a lack of 3rd party support and also I said it doesn't deserve a 98 score. 90/100 seems reasonable. Games like witcher 3 only got a 92 meta score and that game is much better than this one.
The fact it runs at 900 handheld is incredible! Can't wait to play as Zelda on my long haul flight, never grew up playing them

+Nat, If the PS5 actually does 4K/60fps, I'd actually sell my PC to buy one. With the horrible optimization PC games have, but knowing a PS5 could have 4K/60fps, even with VR, that'd actually be the first console ever made that surpasses a PC, and significantly with graphics of such high caliber.

Graphics isn't what makes a game better than any other game, they are simply just eye-candy that everybody forgets about half into the fucking game.

Sucks they couldn't get it at a stable 30 fps when docked, but as a Wii U owner, this is a huge relief. I was watching some GI footage for Wii U and I noticed drops. And I was a bit let down but after seeing this I'm less disappointed. Made the right choice to hold off on Switch for now.

It's a good game, I don't think a lot of people take into account that this game wasn't even running on the Switch till Spring of last year. It's is pretty much a port of the Wii U version because that's what they were developing the game for since 2011.
digital foundry please make a video comparing the switch to the psp and psvita. those portables came out a year before the next gen consoles and no one complained that they were over 30 times weaker .

I wonder if the FPS still dip if u force the docked Switch to output 720p. There i an option for it. I have tried it and it felt as if the dips are gone.
While reviews are not necessarily paid we've to admit that a lot of them gave it high scores even when it doesn't deserve them just because "it's zelda", i didn't expect scores lower than 90 regardless of the quality of the game, so i wouldn't be so confident about scores or calling this "the best game of the decade"
I have the Wii U version and the drops are basically the same as the docked version here. Nintendo definitely need to release a patch because they're just random. Like DF said, you can go through an area with no problems then the next you're down to 20fps. I climbed up a tree near the start of the game and the frame rate dropped fucking hard.

DigitalFoundry you can get 1 to 1 pixel mapping in docked mode AND less frame rate issues by setting the console to display a 720p image when the console it connected to the TV. it worked wonders for me!

Amazing game aside guys, there really is no excuse for charging upwards of $400 for an upscaled 900p game running at sub 30fps. All games have flaws, this one's lies within its technical parameters; and before any Nintendo fanboy comes saying, "Graphics don't matter." Maybe if you think that way, but performance and ease of play does. I'd love to play this game if it was worth it. Not spending $400 on outdated hardware, especially if it means no multiplatform support.

I've been through generations of software droughts and expensive hardware just to play Nintendo first party titles (and once upon-a-time rareware). Will I do it again this time? Probably as I want to play Zelda. But it's the same story every time since the GameCube. Selfishly I would want them to become a software company. It is what it is.

Josh Charlie just buy horizon zero dawn it destroys this many times over m8. ive own every Nintendo console ever & have all the other consoles, switch included & no this isn't as good 2 play or as fun as horizon zero dawn is. IMO this zelda is over hyped so much that I personally found it 2 repetitive 2 play after 2 hours- was super annoyed & hugely disappointed after the killer hype it got. l got so bored l gave it 2 my younger brother luckily it was a review switch that my sponsors gave me 2 promote on my gaming channels lol !
I'm still playing horizon zero dawn 1 week later & living it. better story as l connected with Aloy & give a shit about her. ZELDA feels so wooden & lame. This is an unbiased brutal but honest opinion so don't feel bad owning a ps4 pro m8 be proud. the switch is an over hyped underpowered tablet that's it. its got potential but nothing amazing just a bunch of gimmicky motion controls and a docked hand held that the pro blows away on every technical aspect period. I posted exactly about this issue this morning on Reddit. You could be walking around an area in docked mode, and the frame rate drops quite badly. But take it into portable mode and do the same, and nothing happens. I hope they can fix that, or just give up trying to push it to 900p in docked mode.
whenever i go trade korok seeds with hestu i literally have to look away from the screen ( luckily i have my switch plugged into one of my 2ndary monitors so i just look on another one ) because the lag in that area is just making me feel sick

Tbh I was so involved in the game that the only time I noticed frame drops was when I would kill a moblin and the ragdolls make the game lock for a split second

There is not a single Zelda game that is worse than the boring mess called Horizon except Triforce Heroes, which is still a pretty fun time with friends. Even Skyward Sword had more soul and gameplay than HZD. Horizon takes everything wrong with modern open world games and fits them into one big pile of polished shit, while Breath of the Wild returns to the roots of the series to actually improve the open world genre and set a new standard.

You should put the "docked" and "portable" titles large on the top and in the center so you don't have to keep looking down to see which screen grab we're currently looking at. Just a suggestion
apparently the Wii u version drops below 15 fps at certain points. but the game is amazing and it's got such a great game rating for a reason.. it is bizarre tho between the docked mode and handheld mode..
