Yes it was an anthem of my youth what ever sport I did I could hear that music and commentary in my head... Dave Irvine and Ron Pickering Not Ronny Pickering of road rage fame but the real Mr Pickering I remember them as really good commentators ... great days !!!
@@jamesklatt dude it’s the reason why it’s the best theme tune of any program of all time. It transcended the pond, easily recognizable (although for different shows) by both British and Americans a like

Brian Jacks Daily Thompson Tim Sherwood Alan Minter Kevin Keegan jeff Hurst to name just a few ...along with World's strongest man Jeff Capes. .. We were a great sporting country back then seemed so much better and meant more. .. well time to resarect Superstars the kids need to see there role models in all disciplines and get to know them via TV sports programme such as this ....BBC One of your GREATEST testements was to bring such programming ...kids don't need politics they need sport and fun and games and sportsmanship. .. bring it back !!!!
Brilliant, took me back. David Vine comment, heat 1 of cycling What venue "They're just coming through the childrens play area" 🤣 Things have changed, always thought it was the best prog on TV 🙂
It was great to discover some of these programmes. I don’t think I ever missed one of the original programmes, but it was so good to see them again, and be reminded of such kinder and better times. Could it be reinvented, or am I just naive?
BBC brought it back briefly but ruined it by having it in La Manga so home crowds didnt turn out. Channel 5 did a half baked version hosted by Jim Rosenthal but it was like playground stuff, 4 superstars then picked from a pool of stars to be on their team. Best thing stick to the format that made it great. Do it properly
@@buffalosowljah I'm interested to hear you use that term - I'm not familiar with sportspersons myself per se, so unfortunately I won't find examples too helpful, but describe to me what you mean by "snowflake"

As an American, it's jarring to think this was the theme song to another program that's not Monday Night Football. Comes to show just how great the "Heavy Action" was as a song.
Budd obviously loved his beer. Barely trains, so he says, drinks pints....I also saw he worked in sales for Labatt's. And yet, won World Superstars three times in a row. I think I might not start drinking more beer!
Nice bit of nostalgia ... including the legend Clive Thomas as ref I think. It was a great advert/boost for other sports (judo/basketball, etc) but no way they could ever do this nowadays... too much ££ involved especially considering injuries / timings, etc..
There would be a female one, that'd be won half way through the program by "Brianna Jacks", a 6 foot 2 Scaffolder from Hull with a beard. And anyone complaining would be sent to a Gullag.
I always thought Steve Coogan got the voice for Alan Partridge for sports commentary on Sports Desk from David Coleman but hearing it now I think it may have come more from David Vine. And those sports casual jumpers with the logo too.
When Budd takes the stage for the dips, that looks like Clive Thomas the football referee!!! Has to be. Ahhhh and there he is again being dropped into the water at the steeplechase event.
Those were the days wen it was all uncomplicated not forced to have women, the handicap, men as women , women as men trying to get in on the act and commentators with knowledge of what there talking about. Sport is really irritating now.
Quite ridiculous that the amateur rules were "broken" by John Sherwood taking part in a television competition. This was a great programme in its day, though.
The answer is simple if you look at the credits. The Superstars was not a BBC production but a production of Trans World International - a US company who had the right to market and sell the event to any TV organization of their choice.
Brian Jacks aside, I was slightly mind-blown at how poor they were at dips - bearing in mind they were champion athletes. I'm 55 and I do 4x25 as part of chest day. Alan Minter was world middleweight champion and couldn't even do 30 ffs. Mental. Loved that show, though. Nostalgia overdose.
Brian Jacks was a machine. Great memories.
Just a tear form. Me and dad religiously watched super stars together ❤
Me too with my Dad Rip dad ..❤ great memories 💪🏾👌

Yes good times. Literally nothing worth watching now on any channel. It’s all junk.

What a good looking fella Alan Minter was, no mean feet for a boxer
the music and commentary, makes this show, David vine, Ron Pickering, so brilliant

The best theme tune of any programme of all time.
It’s still one of the themes to Monday night football.

I well remember the theme tune to Superstars- here aged ten and at junior school back then. The tune is in C major!
Put me mind off bbc athletics theme
Has just given me a flashback. I'm 7 again
This show was fun to watch in the 70s and early 80s. It's real nostalgia to see these again.
When it was a good era for childhood (I was born in 1970!)
Great memories watching this. If this was aired on TV today it would be a hit.
If it was aired today, it would be rigged, a sad fact of life now.
One of the best theme tunes ever.
Loved watching this,.brought back some happy viewing memories xx
Brian Jacks my judo hero and superstars legend
All thoroughly decent and grounded athletes. How times have changed.

Brian jack lives in Thailand now
He’s my great cousin
Runs a apartment complex with his wife in Thailand looks like he has a nice life
Still doing hundreds of dips probably?
Nostalgia at it's finest

Cwmbran Stadium has never seen such stars since.
Cwmbran looking splendid
In the American version the basketball court was divided into scoring zones and players shoot baskets from those zones within 60 seconds.
I'm glad I didn't refuse, when Brian Jack's asked to borrow my pen at a judo competition back in the early 70s.
Kinel, Brian Jacks was so fit and strong..
Was this before Daley's Olympic Gold?
I was at this event in 1980. I lived a few miles from Cwmbran at the time.
Fascinating.......

That pillock in the pink cap and blazer! Britain is awash with men in blazers in charge of things!

Amateur status was crazy back then.

No, they had to choose a certain number.

Brian Jacks mum looks like she could bash out a few dips!
Who else came here to see wtf superstars was since they heard mayweather & Connor are facing off?
That'll just be you then....
Not impressed with Thompson's handshake with Jacks. Kept his head facing the other way, let alone any eye contact made.
As a kid I never wanted Jacks to win.
Thompson thought he could waltz in and belittle Jacks, who was having none of his cocky attitude.
No drug tests?
Think Jocky Wilson could have beat Geoff Hurst in the canoeing

How did the BBC get away with such blatant product placement in 1980? The Ferguson trophy no less...
my thoughts exactly.
