    Welcome to leighsr.com to discuss.
    Mercedes does not provide the repair method if the ball joint boot was broken. The only way they provide is by replacing the control arm. That's not only expensive away than just replacing the boot. Also need car lift to tight the bushing of control arm at "ready to drive" position, and alignment, etc... After much research, I decided only to replace the ball joint boot and found a boot that might fit the ball joint.

    You are absolutely awesome! i just liked and subscribed too. I am having to change the control arms on my s550 for a squeaking noise and the dealership saying they cant do alignment till its fixed. I took to 2 different dealerships and they are saying front lower control arms need to be changed and one of them is even quoting to change the front thrust arm bushing as well. I asked the other dealership master tech what is the front lower control arm and he showed me and then i asked what is the front thrust arm bushing and he told me that control and thrust arm is the same and the bushing is in the whole control arm assembly that they had quoted to replace! I was talking to a cousin overseas and he has same car and he told me that local techs there just replace the bushings and they can be found there but everyone that i talked to told me that there is no such thing here!

    If the ball joint is still in good condition, and only the boot is cracked, then @Senior Leigh's method is definitely a good fix and is recommended. This means, of course, checking the car every year. Thanks to Mr. Leigh for pointing out the specific part numbers, apparently at FCPEuro; I buy a lot of stuff from there as well.
    I have this car's immediate predecessor, the W220, and it appears that there was a design change for the W221, specifically that the ball joint appears now to be integral to the lower control arm instead of a press-fit into the steering knuckle (the previous design). This is similar to the thrust control arms, where the ball joints are integrated and not replaceable without changing out the entire arm. I wonder why M-B made that design change and what the benefit, if any, is to the handling of the car.
    Thank you, Mr. Leigh, for showing a much less expensive way to maintain this part of the suspension. I will be checking out your other videos as well.

    • @LeighSr
      @LeighSr  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I appreciate your compliments!As my thought MB maybe going to improve the workshop efficiency for fixing the ball joint damage because most of the MB owners won't check the chassis until the noise loud, that happened when the ball joint was done. To replace the ball joint, you have to remove the control arm and replace the ball joint, then install the control arm, alignment, etc. Why just replace the whole control arm? Save time and labor, also help MB sell more parts, all benefit is on MB whatever manufactory, supplier, and dealer, except the users.

    • @madebytheson
      @madebytheson 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have a question. My MB dealer recommended replacing the whole control arm in its totality.
      I suggested doing what Senior has done here. They said people have done it but keep going back.
      The symptom on my W221 is whenever I go over say a bump or going slowly over a ditch or hole, the creaking is very audible. I assume the boot and bushings are the issue. 11:09

    Sr. Leigh, your video is amazing, as always. Was your car experiencing any symptom of problems before you changed the boot, or were you just doing preventibly because of the tear? I'm trying to narrow down a slight steering wheel shaking in my 2008 CL550 at 60mph, and starting to think it might be a suspension problem.

    • @LeighSr
      @LeighSr  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. The damaged boot was found by a regular checking when maintenance. If you feel any symptoms that must a ball joint wear happening, that must replace entire control arm.
      For the shaking steering wheel, you might checking the wheels balance first.

    • @nath1774

      Since I asked this question, I did find a torn bushing on the left forward lower control arm. I have done numerous things wheel related to rule out balance/alignment/rims issues. Thanks for your compliment. And yes, you have to release the air pressure of the strut, if you are going to disconnect it from the control arm which connects to it. You might release the air pressure from the air feeding hose on the top of the strut, carefully unscrew the connecting screw with seal. Check leak after you reconnect the screw of the air feeding hose as well.

    There is something "fishy" about this car. the vehicle is badged as S550, and clearly has a gas engine. However, there is a "blue" badge on the side, suggesting that the vehicle is a diesel, which it clearly isn't. That would make it S350.

    • @tomtrinh4037
      @tomtrinh4037 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The BleuEfficiency badge on the fender is just MBZ's marketing to convey that the company is aware of minumizing pollutant as much as possible from their modern cars. It is different from its Bluetec badging that suspecting you're referring to. The Bluetec on the other hand is a diesel engine designation. Hope this clarify things up.

      If you released the pressure from the top of the strut, you might support the control arm by a jack and disconnect the ball joint from the wheel knuckle. But there is a risk that the strut still has some downward pressure, that may cause slipping from the supporting jack when you replace the ball joint boot. So in my opinion, I won’t recommend that.

      Yes, you have to release the pressure, if you don’t the strut will difficult to remove also dangerous.

      @@LeighSr I have an 07 S550 Is that hydraulic or is it air pressure by chance? And also what tool is that you’re using around the 2:18 mark of this video to remove the ball joint so easily 😂

      @@HobowithaFesti For the struts, if the car equipped ABC( active body control) system, that's hydraulic, otherwise, that's air strut.
      I think you are talking about the Ball Joint Separator Tool Kit: amzn.to/38QFVY1, I listed the parts and the tools under the video.

      @@LeighSr ok great thank you so much, so if it’s hydraulic there’s no need to release pressure then correct?

    I have a 2011 s550 4 matic do you know the part numbers for the lower control arm you changed? And what else I would need bushings ect for this job

    • @LeighSr
      @LeighSr  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was not changing the control arm, just the boot of ball joint. The boot has not a part number. If you need the control arm part number, I need your VIN number to check the part number.

    I'd just change the tie rod end if it's a ford.
