Jeff Leyton is by far my favorite in this. What a voice. The guys from Norway, Japan, Austria and Denmark I think sounded great in this too. This is like the best version of this song ever. It gives me chills when they sing together
THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING THING I HAVE EVER HEARD. Also, I find the French version hot like burning. Also the Irish one, for some reason (though that one might have just been the sheer magnificence that went with the key change).
There are not many people in the public eye that I would shed a tear when they passed away.....but Rob I shed a tear for you today....May you always be remembered for your Phantom and Le Mis performances....you were magic. Thank you very much for introducing me to musical shows.
My late Mom who passed away June 23, 2016 did so enjoy the concert but especially this part. Hopefully in heaven she was watching and listening to it over and over again~!!
Am I the only one who finds little Hungary absolutely hilarious when he has to get up on tiptoes (or at least that's what it looks like) to sing into the mic? And of course Ireland just has to be a total badass!
Everyone has favorites, but let's face it: they are ALL great or they wouldn't have been invited there. Seeing "The Chairman" is fabulous. I want to see "Austria" in dressed in black leather! And to be able to spit out words in Polish on pitch is beyond amazing -- the language is so consonant-filled !! I love this show. Cannot say enough about it.
Most of them are amazing. It must be really difficult for them to stop singing at the end of their designated segment! Jeff Leyton (Ireland) is nothing short of stunning. (TH-cam search him... he's also capable of incredible tenderness as well as the operatic bombast) I would love to see some of the earlier, gentler ones at full blast. Particularly Krzysztof Stasierowski (Poland)...such a beautiful timbre.
So, I did a little research on these amazing singers, if anyone is interested. I really recommend checking them out, most of them you can find clips of on TH-cam easily. I was trying to make this list well, if you know anything else that should be mentioned, please feel free to tell. The singers in order: *Philip Quast* (1957-), Dream Cast He is a well-established Australian theatre actor, with a dozen or so on-screen roles, most of which were on TV. I found a video of him singing Bring Me Home with other singers, including Jeff Leyton that was recorded in 2020. *Robert Marien* (1955-), France He is actually Canadian, but played in the original French-Canadian show of the play and then was invited to reprise his role in Paris as well. Since 1999, he has been mostly playing a part in The Hunchback of Notre-Dame on world tours. The last of which started during the outbreak of the virus. *Jerzy Leszke* (1958-), Germany He’s a very successful Polish theatre actor, in Poland, Austria and Germany alike, but had performances in other European countries as well. He got the role in the first German Les Mis production in 1995. In the 2010s he was continuously playing a part in Dance of the Vampires. However, he is not doing so well nowadays, since in 2020 he was convicted and jailed for rape. *Takeshi Kaga* (1950-), Japan Another well-established theatre actor, but he is also known for his portrayal of the Iron Chef and his roles in the Death Note movie series. *Gyula Vikidál* (1948-), Hungary He’s from my home country, a very successful rock singer who rose to fame in the ‘70s during the Communist era as member of the P. Mobil. He then played in numerous other bands and from the late ‘80s started his stage works in rock musicals, such as István, a király. In recent years, though his iconic position isn’t shaken, he has mostly lost his singing voice, which he gave to rock and roll. *Tommy Körberg* (1948-), Sweden He’s another mainly singer. He competed in the Eurovision Song Contests of 1969 and 1988. Körberg also played a famous role in the Swedish adaptation of Chess as well as sang in the Swedish dub of Beauty and the Beast. More recently, he sang the song “For Every Step” with the metalcore band Dead by April. That’s actually quite good. *Krzysztof Stasierowski* (1950-), Poland Another singer that is hard to find, but he has been playing roles on many Polish TV shows, most recently in 2020. *Henk Poort* (1956-), The Netherlands Mainly an opera singer, interestingly enough he also dubbed for the Beauty and the Beast. You can find many clips of him singin on Dutch events. Most recently he gained attention when sang Nightwish’s The Phantom of the Opera with their singer in 2019. Once again, it is quite good a song with his singing skills and I recommend checking it out. *Michael Burgess* (1945 - 2015), Canada Another Canadian, but he was involved in the English versions. He was frequently associated with the Canadian anthem as he sang it numerous times over the years. He unfortunately died at the age of 70. ☹ *Reinhard Brussmann* (1957-), Austria He’s not the first on the list who first rose to fame by playing in the Les Miserables. He got the part in 1989, the following year he was chosen as the actor of the year in Austria. The most recent work of his I could find was in 2018, in the musical The Pope. *Rob Guest* (1950-2008), Australia Another unfortunate loss on the list as he died at the age of 58. Ironically, he and Burgess are my favourites in this song. ☹ He was born in England and grew up in Canada and New-Zealand, but settled down in Australia. He was known for his roles in the Phantom of the Opera in which he even set a record of 2.289 performances over the scope of seven years. In his later years that came to soon, he continued to perform in many theatre roles and had the good fortune of establishing himself as a regular gala host of televised shows. After his death a fund was established in his honour to help upcoming musical performers. *Øystein Wiik* (1956-), Norway He was working as a theatre actor from the age of 24, but gained fame in 1988 as Jean Valjean. So much so that in the following years he reprised to role in both Vienna and London. After 2000 he mostly wrote for musicals and then in the past decade has been writing novels. *Jan Ježek* (?), Czech Republic He is also difficult to track down, but he is doing fine and from what I could tell is regarded as one of the most well-known theatre actors in the country. *Kurt Ravn* (1947-), Denmark In 1995, he was already the eldest of the 17, but he’s still doing fine thankfully. He gained fame in the late ‘70s as an actor, appearing in the Danish TV series Matador. He’s been having success as an actor ever since. *Jeff Leyton* (?), Ireland Another theatre actor and singer. He played on the West End many times and reprised his role as Valjean. He is quite active on social media (Instagram and Twitter) and also has a TH-cam channel, which I really recommend checking out. There he even has a full recording of Do You Hear the People Sing and a sing-off with Russel Crowe, both from 2020. *Egill Ólafsson* (1953-), Iceland He is fairly successful in Iceland both on the stage and on screen. For the past few years, he seems to be have taken a break, but he did have a role on TV in 2021. He is also active on his Facebook page. *Craig Schulman* (?), USA He has been playing in various theatre roles from the ‘80s throughout today, but other then that is hard to find. You can find an interview with him from 2018, but even that is not much. As of May, 2021.
Thatperformer387 Colm Wilkinson was born in 1944 in Drimnaugh, Ireland. Ironically, the tenor who represented Ireland and played Valjean in Dublin, Jeff Layton, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. Two more of the 17 Valjeans were not born in the country they represented. Robert Marien, who represented France, is actually French-Canadian and Jerzy Jeszke of "Germany" was born in Bytow, Gdansk, Poland.
Philip Quast is a god (and a really nice guy). I was lucky enough to see him play Javert after I had found him through the Symphonic Recording. I wrote to him (I was a teenager) and even though he'd moved on to Sunday in the Park with George, he received it and replied with a lovely 4 page handwritten letter. We communicated for some time and I treasure those letters.
I just watch this over and over, especially when I can’t sleep. I think it’s one of the most beautiful performances of all time. I always tear up. Each of these gentlemen is magnificent ... but the gentleman from Austria is outstanding, followed closely by the gentleman from Norway.
Chills. Absolutely unbelievable! Of course Colm is THE Valjean, and therefore it is very difficult not to channel him while playing the role, and each of the 17 Valjeans did a stellar job. The Norwegian production is perhaps my favorite of the foreign Les Miserables.
BTW, Phil Cavall and Jeff Leyton, if you didn't realize, were in the prologue of the concert. They were the prisoners singing. It was incredible - I didn't even realize it until I played back the disc and saw them both. Coolness!
Hugo's novel is one of the greatest ever written, I only discovered it a few years ago in the original French, sooo beautiful, so precise, so witty. Let's hear praise for him, too, not just Valjean.
I still think that this is the best finale of a concert *ever*. I always sing along with this musical, whether the DVD or CD and this time I actually got choaked up and had to cut myself short before the final note. Two incredible songs that have so much meaning in them.
+Ian Forman -- There was already an effort to adopt "The Internationale" (French: L'Internationale) as the world anthem. The original French refrain of the song is "...C'est la lutte finale / Groupons-nous et demain / L'Internationale / Sera le genre humain." (English: "This is the final struggle / Let us group together and tomorrow / The Internationale / Will be the human race."). For some reason, the song was never adopted by the United Nations. For myself, I prefer "Kumbaya" as the world anthem, because it is a lot easier to learn.
One song, 17 different languages; How come I keep hearing the same message? Music is the universal language of the human soul. Absolute brilliance. One Day More!!!
Every single time I watch this, Rob Guest's first line gives me major goosebumps. I need to find a recording of him in Les Mis somewhere. Sad to learn that he has passed away... rest in peace.
The first airing of this on TV was my first viewing (or hearing) of Les Miserables...I have never seen such an inspiring sight as all those Valjeans, each in their own language, singing "Do you hear the people sing". Somewhere Victor Hugo was very proud....
The point of this wasn't a competition or to point out who sucks and who doesn't. It was to show how universal Les Miserables is! That some people may prefer the teeny bopper stars that get famous because of voice boxes, but that Les Miserables has spanned over 17 countries sending a universal message of freedom. No matter who has a better voice, the message is always the same and if you stop commenting petty things and open your eyes you will see just how amazing it truly is!
I've always liked this part of the show, where the international people come up and sing in their native languages. I love different languages, because I can't see the people themselves.
Fantastic Finale to an truly memorable production of emotions, Les Mis is surely one of the all time greats. If you haven't yet seen it performed, then you must promise yourself to do so before you die.
I feel like the Austrian and Australian guys are actually telling me that war is inevitable and that I must go to war. And when the Irish starts singing and a musket suddenly appears on my hand.
Iceland Jean is really tall. I thought he just liked playing with the mic. Then the Irish Jean is awesome! Japanese Jean is like "what was I doing here again?" and then, for some reason, American Jean changed the lyrics. loved this. was crying after they sang. They should have sang "Who am I?" or "The Confrontation", as it's Valjean's awesomest songs in the play. :)) It should have been 17 Enjolras. xD
For most of the world English is a learned second language mandatory in schools. The country listed with the performers is what production he was associated with and not necessarily his home. Robert Marien, for instance, represented France in this video, but is actually French-Canadian from Quebec. In addition to playing Valjean in Paris he has also played the role in Montreal, New York and London.
The Irish singer cured my depression and general apathy. Yes I WILL join in your crusade!
Where do I sign lol
Stirs my Celtic blood for damn sure! I would have loved to have heard that guy's Valjean straight through, from "Look Down" to the end.

He is quite active on social media (Instagram and Twitter) and also has a TH-cam channel, which I really recommend checking out. There he even has a full recording of Do You Hear the People Sing and a sing-off with Russel Crowe, both from 2020.
*Egill Ólafsson* (1953-), Iceland
He is fairly successful in Iceland both on the stage and on screen. For the past few years, he seems to be have taken a break, but he did have a role on TV in 2021. He is also active on his Facebook page.
*Craig Schulman* (?), USA
He has been playing in various theatre roles from the ‘80s throughout today, but other then that is hard to find. You can find an interview with him from 2018, but even that is not much.
As of May, 2021.
The first singer is Colm Wilkinson
Fantastic work!
Thanks for doing this!
Tommy Körberg was the original Russian on the Chess concept album with Elaine Paige, Barbara Dickson and Murray Head.
Ireland though!
Tone Stallone Seriously. Colm Wilkinson is Irish too. They've got the two best in my opinion!!
IBleedPinkFrosting he's Canadian
Thatperformer387 Colm Wilkinson was born in 1944 in Drimnaugh, Ireland. Ironically, the tenor who represented Ireland and played Valjean in Dublin, Jeff Layton, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. Two more of the 17 Valjeans were not born in the country they represented. Robert Marien, who represented France, is actually French-Canadian and Jerzy Jeszke of "Germany" was born in Bytow, Gdansk, Poland.
@@seamus1956 scots are persons from ireland right????
Cole from Scotland
This makes me so emotional always.
R.I.P. Rob Guest (Australian Valjean, 1950-2008) and thank you for the incredible music you gave us over many years.
RIP Michael Burgess Canadian Jeans Valjean...Your beauty-full voice will sadly be missed...
jay parry When did this happen? He along w U.S. and Australia were my favorites
I didn't know he passed away?...rip may the gods have mercy for you, you will be missed
Same with Rob Guest who was in both the New Zealand and Australian productions... passed 2 Oct 2008 (age 58)
jay parry ...I didn’t know he had passed...How?
Colm Wilkerson took over the role of Valjean after micheals run with the show ended.
Chairman Kaga is bretty gud as always.
TONIGHTS SECRET INGREDIENT: REVOLUTION!
^^
This! All day this!
He traded off with another actor; one would play Valjean and the other Javert for one performance and then switch for the next one!
holy crap. i knew he looked familiar.
It’s time for a bad ass revolution that really meant something!
Un moment unique dans l'histoire de l'humanité. A savourer. Encore et encore.
I love how in one day more you can still hear phillip quast above the 17 valjeans
The Norwegian production is perhaps my favorite of the foreign Les Miserables.
this is absolutely one of the most amazing concert performances I've ever seen , just because of the context
OMG that female voice piercing through the orchestra and all the man is just awesome!
The female voice is Lea Salonga, aka Eponine. :D
ようやくみつけた! 何回みても感動^^ どうもありがとうございます。
BTW, Phil Cavall and Jeff Leyton, if you didn't realize, were in the prologue of the concert. They were the prisoners singing. It was incredible - I didn't even realize it until I played back the disc and saw them both. Coolness!
Oh wow!
they were the worst there
Oh wow, I need to watch that again now and see them! Thanks for sharing that!
That Japanese Valjean has a good voice
Hugo's novel is one of the greatest ever written, I only discovered it a few years ago in the original French, sooo beautiful, so precise, so witty. Let's hear praise for him, too, not just Valjean.
I still think that this is the best finale of a concert *ever*. I always sing along with this musical, whether the DVD or CD and this time I actually got choaked up and had to cut myself short before the final note. Two incredible songs that have so much meaning in them.
+all the points to Netherlands, Austria, Norway, and Denmark. And of course, to Chairman Kaga.
+choclytgremlins And the mad Hungarian!
Only one word can describe this... Breathtaking!
I got shivers just as they were walking up :')
Easily one of my favorite videos of all time, and always brings goosebumps. Just such beautiful voices that I just can’t help but fall in love with
If and when the world eventually unites, this will be the national anthem.
thumbs up
+Ian Forman i agree this should be the united planets national anthem
+Ian Forman -- There was already an effort to adopt "The Internationale" (French: L'Internationale) as the world anthem. The original French refrain of the song is "...C'est la lutte finale / Groupons-nous et demain / L'Internationale / Sera le genre humain." (English: "This is the final struggle / Let us group together and tomorrow / The Internationale / Will be the human race."). For some reason, the song was never adopted by the United Nations. For myself, I prefer "Kumbaya" as the world anthem, because it is a lot easier to learn.
Only ONE flag for ALL PEOPLE
Actually a one world government is exactly how corruption and tyranny spreads
This is one of my favorite parts. I love seeing all the Valjeans. They're wonderful!
i just LOVE Jeff Leyton's singing and Kurt Ravn from Denmark was sounding pretty amazing too!
An amazing example of the honest and pure truth that music is truly a beautiful and universal language.
What an honor for the Frenchman, that his "Victor Hugo" is celebrated by such a great number of talents..
Robert Marien from Quebec Canada the French Valjean.
Oh my God the austrian is just the best
鹿賀丈史さん格好いいなぁ。声も良いし素敵。
One song, 17 different languages; How come I keep hearing the same message?
Music is the universal language of the human soul. Absolute brilliance.
One Day More!!!
Every single time I watch this, Rob Guest's first line gives me major goosebumps. I need to find a recording of him in Les Mis somewhere. Sad to learn that he has passed away... rest in peace.
So amazingly great!
Only think I can add to this is that I saw the Polish version and it was AMAZING, especially Javert's suicide and the Confrontation made me shiver.
Today, in our Brno's theater, I saw the best Jean Valejans ever. Thank you Mr. Jan Ježek.
When they sing One Day More, Lea is clear as a bell
Lea rules!
鹿賀さんが出演されていたんですね。
各国の出演者の方々。
お見事です。
I LOVE the Irish guy...he really goes for it :D
The first airing of this on TV was my first viewing (or hearing) of Les Miserables...I have never seen such an inspiring sight as all those Valjeans, each in their own language, singing "Do you hear the people sing". Somewhere Victor Hugo was very proud....
Japanese Valjean: Bread? Why not Bell Pepper?
Chairman Kaga FTW!
The pure emotion in the voices of all the singers... god this song sends a chill down my spine
ロイヤルアルバートホール、正直上の方の座席だと音響が今ひとつっぽい印象がありますが、このコンサートの出来はかなりお見事ですよね。
Two thumbs up for this breathtaking performance. :-)
Our hearts are broken for Paris today, but we stand together for her people.
Listening to this for the 100th time. Still gives me chills every time.
i love the look on the japenese's face when he finishes lol its priceless.
Norway, Denmark and Ireland nailed it!😄
This song sends chills down my back.
The correct pluralization is "Jeans Valjean."
Yes, correct.
Sounds a little odd. Why is that correct?
Because his last name is Jean. Valjean is his first name
@@samcarruthers6053 Okay. That makes sense now. Thanks!
there is not "s" at Jean? It's the french name, and not the english word for pantalon
I've always liked this part of the show, where the international people come up and sing in their native languages. I love different languages, because I can't see the people themselves.
Iron Chef Takeshi!
Fantastic Finale to an truly memorable production of emotions, Les Mis is surely one of the all time greats. If you haven't yet seen it performed, then you must promise yourself to do so before you die.
There is this one moment when the music goes silent, and all you can hear are those 17 amazing voices. Pure magic! (4:45)
Still the best of musical theater…. Every song is memorable in itself, and together, and unforgettable performance
Japanese Jean is like "what was I doing here again?"
and then, for some reason, American Jean changed the lyrics.
loved this. was crying after they sang. They should have sang "Who am I?" or "The Confrontation", as it's Valjean's awesomest songs in the play. :))
It should have been 17 Enjolras. xD
I cannot believe that the non-native English speaking Valjeans took the time to memorize that one verse from One Day More in English.
Megurine Ziam why not? I’d imagine every single one of them knows all the songs in english. They all know how to speak english.
If these guys decided to sing anything together- I would buy it. No matter what, it would be the most epic track I have ever bought.
am I the only one crushing over Reinhardt Brussmann in this video?
Because damn
I don't know why though
Katja Budig ...me too!
God bless the 17 Jean Valjeans and their countries 🇬🇧🇫🇷🇩🇪🇯🇵🇭🇺🇸🇪🇵🇱🇨🇦🇦🇹🇦🇺🇳🇴🇨🇿🇩🇰🇮🇪🇮🇸🇺🇸
This was EPIC!! Love it!
Bravo Australia and Canada, they're such incredible singers :)
RIP Michael Burgess: Sept.28, 2015
Susanne Cooper RIP Rob Guest, too! :(
I've seen Robert Marien play captain Von Trapp in Sound of Music (French version) in Montreal. Amazing actor!
