Realizing I was beating someone to death with my arm that I'd mistakenly equipped after the enemy cut it off. Will always be my favorite roguelike feature.
Perhaps the real magic of Rogue's likenesses is how they empower their small developers. The delightful complexity of these games is otherworldly. And perhaps ASCII is no coincidence. Just how a book is only a collection of symbols until you gain literacy, the worlds of rogue-likes coalesce within one's own mind.
It's definitively a skill to be able to read ASCII graphics, or just 'read' the randomly generated world and creatures around you to see a story around you and make it evolve.
I always used to think this when playing early releases of DF. People would ask how I could understand all the symbols and the Matrix movie reference was always the perfect answer. You don't see symbols, you see trees, grass, water and an orc. He's on fire.
There are people in the comments saying the ASCII art is better and maybe, thats valid. But my millennial ass can't go that far. It's why I dropped Dorf Fort multiple times until the Steam update. I personally think the new art of Qud and DF is overall more user friendly, even if it can come at the cost of some features.
Qud was my absolute best gaming purchase next to Minecraft. I saw it on the Steam page for I think literally $10, and I was just looking at the time for games like Candybox, just weird shit, and Qud just blows my expectations out the water. Just happens to be the best traditional roguelike ever made, puts everything else to shame, I can't think of one game close to it.
Glad to see you're still on Linux. After the initial hump of re-learning things and discovering how to get your Windows applications running and finding decent open-source alternatives for the ones that won't run. It's nice knowing you're actually in control of your computer.
I love CoQs tileset. It tickles my brain just enough to engage my imagination. I love its sandbox design. There are so many ways to solve a problem. It's realy up to the player. I love its music. It gives each area in the game a sense of identity. I love its writing. You can look at the most mundane things and get descriptions, that will make you laugh or wonder or both. I love the progression. You start very weak and you can become so powerful in so many different ways. I love its lore. Between procedural history and handwritten texts are a lot of mysteries to discover. I love its NPCs. There are so many memorable and weird characters. I started reading fanfiction about the game. (Check out chimeraproblems!) I love its modding community. I'm sure, they will keep the game fresh for many years to come. I've played 565 hours so far and still discover something new. I can't wait to play the last chapters of the story. :)
I've been playing Caves Of Qud since the originals prototypes! thank for this trip of nostalgia for me. First got introduced to this game ( and DF, Cataclysm:DDA, SS13 & etc) by PlumpHelmetPunk back in february of 2011!! his videos/playlists are still up to this day and i think they are still worth a watch

Sproggiwood was my second roguelike ever that I had ever played, where I immediately bought Caves of Qud when it first dropped on steam. I bounced off it pretty hard but it is now my favorite open world rpg after a few hundred hours. I've been taking a break for about a year knowing 1.0 would be around the corner.
Thank you for introducing me to CoQ. It's not a game I normally would be interested in. However, after watching some of CoQ streams you have done I picked it up and have lost way to many hours playing it. Thanks!
P.s. got nothing but love for you, Blind! Keep up the good work. You're definitely becoming one of my favorite channels on TH-cam &, just as I do with CoQ, I wish you all the best & success in your endeavors
I've never played a game that could be so easily compared to others in terms of basic format, yet be so utterly incomparable. I've never played a game that the $15 price I paid at the time gave me nearly 3000 hours of mesmerizing engagement. It's like a dream.
Haven't had the time to play post palladium reef but it is such a good game, the vibe of the lore and atmosphere together is one of the best of any game imo
I really hope they find success. This game is such a beautiful work of art. The mechanics it displays are on another level (dare I say bordering the complexity of Dwarf Fortress?!?) 😅 Seriously, though, I'm glad Kitfox picked them up & I wish them all the best! If this game didn't succeed, I would be dumbfounded & heartbroken
Just finished the main quest(so far) in classic mode (after about 50h of playtime) and I'm itching to see how the story ends. I can't imagine having to wait for years. I first played on 2022ish but i didn't sick with it, but now I'm hooked :)
I got the game when it first dropped and waiting isn't as bad as you think. Just spend a hundred or so hours doing cave survival runs and you will find some crazy shit, where nowadays you will be entertained with how much is hidden deep below.
@BlindiRL dude it's genuinely a void of like, content. I was there daily for like three months then started working my ass off and immediately stopped having time to tune in 😭 Thank you
I was literally wondering what old versions of Qud looked like the day this was posted. Did you read my mind? If you did, please stop, that's not very nice of you. I should really play it soon, I played a little bit after spring molting, but otherwise I haven't played since last year
Ehh I feel like CoQ randomness kinda hurts it as it makes trying to figure out history in the game confusing. Its very much in stark contrast to something like DF where you can follow history much better. To me it just seamed like the dev got kinda lazy and used randomness to fill out the world too much. I also think this game gets way way too much praise. Its a good game but some act like its the most innovative game ever which is not true at all.
Would of loved to see the ACTUAL evolution of caves of Qud, you didn't even show the previous UI iterations for more than 5 seconds. weird video that felt more like you just read some journalists article and you seem kinda out of the loop and behind on the actual developmental history of this game Just feels weird to mention showing the "middle" then proceed to not show the middle of the development at all
The need to throw stones at enemies was such a fun discovery at Red Rocks.
Realizing I was beating someone to death with my arm that I'd mistakenly equipped after the enemy cut it off. Will always be my favorite roguelike feature.

I like this idea. As if ASCII or roguelike literacy is its own skillset like a form of poetry.

Shoutout to Rogue Rat for teaching me how to play this amazing game

I feel like it should be easier to imagine CoQ in ASCII than it is, but it's current style is just so... it's so CoQ I cant seperate it from itself.
Yeah I get that. I do still think once you've played a few hours it clicks.

fun fact: the "carbide chef" skill in-game is named after chimeraproblems's fics!

I love CoQ, I'm so glad its this big
Love the comparison! Gonna give it another shot when 1.0 drops!
This was a fantastic watch, thank you Blind.

Glad that some people are brave enough to try out this strange gem.
I became aware of this game through your stream. I cant thank you enough man, it's one of my favorite games ever, and has inspired me so much.
I love Caves of Qud, I cannot express how awesome this game is
Truly. Live and Drink.

Such a neat game. Excited to jump back in for 1.0! Thanks for the interesting video!

I need more CoQ in my life.
Haven't had the time to play post palladium reef but it is such a good game, the vibe of the lore and atmosphere together is one of the best of any game imo
I think it says something that the game is so insanely wild and wacky yet some how it all fits in the same world without feeling dissonant
Thanks Blind, I got on the CoQ train (only?) four years ago, greta to hear the backstory of this amazing game.
Love all the UI changes running up to 1.0... but I miss the old one every once in a while, I feel the same in DF.
Cool video, I’m hype for 1.0
sheeit the old ascii version looks better than the faux-ascii toggle in the new version. thanks for the vid o7
Great video, Blind!
Thanks! Qud videos are hard to make so I'm happy you liked it.
i had a character named Sussy baka, he died getting slopped topped by a jolly racher

"At least somewhat familiar with the game"
Let's check the steam stats... Oh. 534 hours.
Yep, "somewhat familiar" confirmed.
I can't wait to get my free time back, I miss joining the friggin streams man.
This is so damn exciting.
Looking forward to having you around.

Hi Blind!
This game looks fun.

I’ve not played any rogue-likes since I stole Morgoth’s crap in Angband, back in the 90s. What would you say this is like vs it?

My favorite RPG, can´t play it with permadeath. It´s to frustrating.
Blind, are you on SA?
I don't have an account no. I'm not a active forum poster and never have been. I just use search tools to search them.
Wow, the ASCII looks so much better.
The ASCII is still an option deep in the display settings.
@BlindiRL if that's the case I'll get it!
