- It's one of the most memorable TMNT comics stories from the guest era of Mirage Comics' volume one. But because of several circumstances, it is unlikely to get reprinted again. This is the story behind "The river" story, and it's soft follow-up story, "Sons of the Silent Age".

One thing I didn't really clarify in the video is that there are other banned stories because of the issues described. Like "Sky Highway" and "Turtle Dreams", plus other specials outside of Volume 1. But "The River" took three issues and is the most memorable one. (Although, Sky Highway also got referenced later... but that could be a story for another day.

The AI narration is painful listening that sucks. Near the end it says, 'picked their interest' and the closed caption also said picked. The actual word is PIQUED but AI has apparently eliminated it from the lexicon. I had to dislike and split.
I actually had a nightmare about Bloodsucker last year. I am 33 and it was probably 16-17 years since I read the story. Weird experience :P

It's really a shame that "The River" has been made inaccessible because it's one of my favorite stories from the Mirage era and one of the best all around, there's nothing like a good TMNT horror story. I'm glad that you mentioned Wyrm as a comparison including the rip off version in the 2012 television series because I was hoping that they would do something with Wyrm for the farmhouse arc that was closer to Bloodsucker in the comic books for the primary reason that it would have fit him a lot better. I already knew at the time that it couldn't happen and, for the most part at least, why, but it just would have been better than making him a stupid space genie. There was the Chimera creature which was actually part earthworm, but it wasn't the same thing.
This remains one of the most compelling TMNT stories ever told in my opinion. Great video
I have this story. I bought these issues when I was a kid and I had no idea what was going on. I just knew the cartoon and toys. It's great to see a video on it.

the creep from the 2012 animated series was basically bloodsucker when it took all of Raphael mutagen blood

Yeah it was kind of a Twisted turn for the Main 84 TMNT Storyline and i went through it all once to complete it.

This was REALLY interesting! I have never heard of this story, and that's a real shame (for me). There are SO many awesome and unique comic adventures out there about The Turtles that studios could draw inspiration from, yet time and time again they insist on doing the "safe" mainstream retellings we keep getting. For me (so far) my favorite animated Turtles remain the 2003 Turtles, who drew inspiration from the original comics. Yet I can acknowledge that even with the 2003 series, after a point the story admittedly started to become redundant and stale.
I REALLY hope this new upcoming reboot of The Turtles doesn't fall into the usual practice of just doing a variation of a retelling of the 1987 Turtle's story (like what Nickelodeon basically did). I really would like to see a fresh take on them.

I'm hopeful at some point in the future IDW will be able to nail some sort of contract to get the Rick Veitch stuff reprinted. Heck, all the Mirage stuff. 🤞

I have these issues… I think banned is a little dramatic, I always thought bloodsucker was just a rights issue
It's complicated. Nothing is stopping IDW from reprinting these. But Veitch would still be able to sue them (unless they clear the legalities with him), therefore, IDW is "banned" from reprinting it. It's not the story itself that is banned. But in any case, I will replace this video soon and find a way to make it clearer.

I find it to be complete bullshit that they are not allowed to release the entire series properly in omnibus form.
They can do it if they want to. But it will more than likely result in lawsuits.

As far as I know, volume 1 is the only one with legal impediments. Volume 4 can be reprinted but I think they are not doing it because it is incomplete.
I know there are a few issues of Tales Vol. 2 that couldn't be reprinted as well (all the C.O.W.boys of Moo Mesa crossovers).

I started replacing the text-to-speech videos recently, but it will take me a long time to replace them all.

It's text-to-speech, and... English is my second language, so sometimes a word may sound close enough for me but not for a native speaker. So you can also blame the human in this case.
I am slowly replacing these human-unfriendly videos with human-narrated ones, but there are more than 40, so it's gonna take me a while. In the meantime, you can avoid them altogether by watching recent or new videos (for the past year now), or by watching the "Deluxe" playlist.
This video in particular is going to be replaced this year (hopefully).
Overrated arc if you ask me, it’s good but I’m not a fan of most of the guest era comics. To many times the turtles were written completely wrong. There’s a reason most of that era were made non canon.

I am giving you Rick's motivations for the story ended up being banned... and the drama at DC is part of what caused it.
I only do long videos when there is a lot to talk about, and this one was one of those cases.
