For those that are unfamiliar with firearms, this is exactly how a real gunfight would sound, not the fake muzzled hollywood bs. This is one of the best scenes in movie history.

@@tactiguay7154 When there aren't any projectiles being fired you won't get the cracks. You also don't hear them as the shooter. This scene used production sound, meaning the sound was captured during the scene firing blanks. Hence the excellent echoes of the shots being fired.

@@justforever96 Not really. This scene used production sound, which was recorded during the shoot as the blanks were being fired. It's as close to real as you can get. Blanks are quite loud.

The Heat shooting scene has been now rated as the most realistic firefight in movie history. No music, no special effects and real shell casings during the shooting. I see a lot of chicken wings in there, in the 90's troops still trained under the chicken wings regime until they got told that they were gonna get their elbows blown off, now elbows are all tucked in and chicken wings is seen a sign of poor training or none at all.

The heist crew were actually trained and advised by ex-SAS troopers, during full automatic fire the "chicken wing" would actually provide better stability than tucking your elbow in, Larry Vickers did a real good break down of this scene and went into quite a lot of technical detail about the whole thing from the impressive bounding/fire and move tactics, to the handling and reloading of weapons, even digging into the specific types of weapons used by each character. Its a real interesting watch.

Someone did a review of this scene talking about this issue (Forget which vid but not hard to find here on youtube) where they pushed the idea that Hanna, whose REAL motivation for "HUNTING" down bad-guys is NOT to save innocent lives, protect civilians or even simply "be a good cop", but because of the THRILL of hunting them down, and because he's leading the team, he's the reason that all of these cops and authorities are pressing onward in spite of the risks to civilians. Any other person in charge would have held off and retreated, but Hanna, as he put it in the coffee scene "spends all his time chasing bad guys", and he does that because again, he gets off on it rather than out of a sense of righteousness. THAT'S why he and McCauley have share that bond in that coffee/end scene - they both are doing what they're doing NOT necessarily because Hanna wants to protect people, nor McCauley necessarily NEEDS millions and millions to "live the life he wants", but because they both feel "the juice is the action".

    • @niteowl2397
      @niteowl2397 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@jeffreychampion7648 Another way to look at it is that the shoot out was already going down and Hanna had the option to weigh the lives of innocent people or risk his job, something most people prioritize over everything else. It's easy to sit there playing armchair quarterback from the comfort of your computer. Another way to look at is that this is a movie made for entertainment, so all if, ands, or buts about what would/should actually happen go right out the window.

Honest truth: the U.S. Marines have shown this sequence to trainees at their school of infantry. About the the part were Val Kilmer ducks down behind a car to reload his rifle: that apparently was or still is shown to US special forces trainees with the following note from the instructors "This is how fast it should be done." Side note about that bit: the license plate on the car that Mr. Kilmer ducks behind to reload has "2LUP" on it. "LUP" is British Army terminology for "Laying Up Position"

Every little detail is put into this scene to make it great; even the simplistic music suddenly goes off beat right when Val sees the cops at 1:49, that much more adding to the "oh crap" of the moment.
This along with Thief are arguably Mann's greatest works!

We go to the bank, we take the money and and we're out, anything with pulse and breath that comes in our way it goes down we kill it, no hesitation, no fear, no second thoughts that's exactly Val Kilmers reaction when he saw the cops.

My only small issue with this is the lack of reloading vs the ratio of full auto firing. I believe the M4 that was used has a fire rate of some 900 rounds a minute. I could be wrong, since i only heard this from someone else but that's just under 3 seconds of full auto trigger time before needing a reload. 30 rounds will be spent up fairly quick. However, the gun sounds are impeccable. Guns are immensely loud, and the current films such as john wick are an absolute disgrace to reality. The sound design is perfect in this movie. I wish current producers would try to recreate more offensive audio in terms of gunshots.

"Factual basis. Heat is based on the true story of Neil McCauley, a calculating criminal and ex-Alcatraz inmate who was tracked down by Detective Chuck Adamson in 1964."
The big shootout never happened in real life in the open, it was in an alley.
Most of the action ie PLOT actually happened including them sitting for coffee.

I always tell people first it feel like when you swim to the bottom of a pool. You feel a pressure deep in your ears. Then I tell them to put their fingers in their ears and listen to themselves talk.
It’s essentially exactly like that. And like you said it could be that 1st round that does it. After that it isn’t as loud but the more shots let off the more damaging and longer lasting it is for your ears.
Then later down the road when you think you’ve recovered , you meet Tinnitus

Except I dont see a single civilian get shot. What happened to all the poor assholes in the cars at the roadblock? What about the bus stoppe right behind them, and all the people in the cars on the road as Kilmer sprays the highway with 5.56 ammo? Not to mention all the random people in the buildings behind. Not realistic unless they show all the innocent bystanders killed and injured by such stupid use of firepower.
