    Still no work on the pond just so cold today temp outside tonight 3c and dropping so covers still on which is not to bad as it gives me time to take the electrics apart and add new plugs and cable into the system I have one of those 6x blagdon switch things in the shed still boxed was gong to use it however I still think outdoor double switch sockets are better simple plug in plug out and a lot more simple to find anything that keeps setting off the RCD so just need a nice warm day to get it all done.

    Well minus -2c tonight very cold out it’s going to get colder over the next 2 weeks so covers staying on.
    Looking at possible a roof on the pond 2 rivers 3 nature parks are within 3 mile of my home and the sea about 10 miles to the east.
    Lots of seagulls flying over around dawn and dusk and herons around mid-day so I need to find a better idea than netting.
    At the same time see if I can find a way to heat the pond in winter without costing a lot of money.
    Ken who used to keep koi and passed on in 2021 used to run heat from his greenhouse coke heater through a big 8” pipe going along the side of his pond the pipe was covered in soil he thought it kept the pond warm but I’m not sure however I will look at a few things and try some in the summer if summer comes this year.

    • @KoiPondLifestyle
      @KoiPondLifestyle  ปีที่แล้ว

      The think with transferring heat to the pond is it needs to be consistent heat so there aren't any fluctuations in temps.. The heating from my garage hit a dead end as I couldn't guarantee heating the garage 24/7 so couldn't keep a constant temp into the pond.. 🤔

    Have you tried moving the thermometer around the pond to see if there are actually any variation in temperature, as we're always lead to believe that it's warmer at the bottom than it is at the top, just as a matter of interest.

    • @KoiPondLifestyle
      @KoiPondLifestyle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hiya, great comment. Yeah I've done some tests and found that you need a very deep pond to make any difference with the temps. Also my bottom drain takes water from the bottom, to the filter system and back into the pond at the top so circulating 24hrs a day quick also.keep the pond at an all round same temp from the circulation.. 😉👍

    Here we go again 2C outside and dropping so below freezing again by the look of things checked with my local airport on conditions for the next week and around freezing each night up to around the 21st March.
    So, looks like the covers are staying on for another 2-3 weeks and maybe longer.
    This does bring into focus feeding do we or do we not feed if temps are above 10c through the day but drop each night to near freezing.
    Plus, what effect would this have on the fish. Some people had problems with youtube over the past 24hr around the midlands I belive video problems mainly another reason to back up all your videos and subscriber lists.

    Going to start the revamp of my pond in the next few weeks and try some new ways of filtration with new media.
    Also a new way of heating the pond through the winter using flour and charcoal.
    Another ice cold day pond temp holding up fish seem fine water quality very good nothing on in the pond from november other than 1 small air pump but water quality better than when I have everything on. Pond temp seems to be holding on I think with a little ajustment to covers for next year I will be able to maintain 10C through the winter.

    You really should change your layout of the filter. first bay brushes. second mats from big holes too small holes and top off with Japanese mats. third Japanese mats and last bay your moving bed.

    ive always turned my air and u.v off in winter and turn my pump down to 1% which the display says 18w.So my winter running cost is 18w which will be almost nothing.

    Why a bucket to flush your filer bay? Why no submersible pump with a long hose to flush? Much quicker and more efficient. Best regards from the netherlands

      Hiya in the Netherlands.. Good idea with the submersible pump. I just use the bucket idea as it seems quicker for my filters..😉👍

    Another ice cold day just 2c outside today and they say for the next 2 weeks its going to be bad however it looks like the covers could come off the secound week of march so then it begins the big clean up. The Met Office annual global temperature forecast for 2023 suggests this year will be one of the Earth’s hottest years on record. So the UK will suffer with massive heat waves.
    However it could be a Artic Winter 23/24.

    Hay got to ask how do you keep the big bird !! Away from ponds ? Heron bird ?
    ..and ideas please or suggestions.. as I have seen one fly over last week very low !!
    Andy Amy hacks to keep them away please

    • @KoiPondLifestyle
      @KoiPondLifestyle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hiya, deep vertical side ponds are better to help should a Heron find your pond. They hunt better when they can paddle into the pond to wait for the fish. They don't usually wade into water above their knee. If the pond is deep the fish can stay on the bottom. However I hear that the bird is clever to vomit food into the pond and wait for the fish to rise to get it as food. The pretend heron I use has kept them away so far, but you have to keep moving it so it looks like it's moved itself around the pond as they are very territorial. Hope this helps..🤔😉👍

    Forgot mobile phone cost going up in April some by 16% mine is going up by (CPI) rate, plus 3.9%. so mine is 11.1% plus 3.9% I just finished getting my Koi food in as that will be going up in price soon as most food stocks come from China and from april anything from outside the Uk you will have to pay duty on at the moment most are free of duty but no longer and I thought this year was going to be better.
