Evening Andy👍😊. Another interesting update👍😊. Good call with the ponds balls, don’t put new ones in until the previous ones have all dissolved. Gone in no time in the summer but not needed half as much in the colder months👍😊. Alway love your tinkering and coming up with new ideas to try out👍😊. I do remember cleaning my multi bay filter on the previous pond, in the wind, rain and snow……oh joy☹️🥶. Have you tried using the big rubber gloves that go past your elbows? Last night was bad in Northumberland with 90mph winds the side of someone’s pond was brought down with the wind pressure on the side of the wall and water moving another pond lost its roof and part of the top wall as it was ripped off.
Tonight, it’s going to be a lot stronger they say it could make 110mph but this time in Devon Cornwall and summerset and across Wales the midlands and Staffordshire Derbyshire we seem to be a lot better off this time it’s a good idea to take covers off the pond as the wind can just rip them off and when they are on the wind pressure hits the side of the pond which can cause damage to the walls.

I used an incandescent light of 75-100 Watts next to my air pump in a covered area and ran all the time during winter. This warm air recirculated into the water thru the airstones and warming the water, up into the covered area over the pond (assuming covered pond). The warmer air then is sucked back into the air pump which is further heated by lamp and back into the airstones. Koi were very happy all winter and ate hardily!! This setup was for a 1000 gallon holding tank holding many koi awaiting transfer into main pond in Spring. The holding tank was covered in plastic in the wide open air under my deck. The air pump and lamp were under the same plastic covering saving the heat also under the plastic and warming the air over the pond as well as warming thru the air bubbles. A larger bulb/larger wattage also means higher cost in running.

How often do you have the long burner lit in the garage?
You could make a heat exchanger to transfer heat via pumped water. Though you cant use copper pipe and the heat eachange will be pricey made from Stainless steel.... unless you could salvage one from a scrap gas boiler???
The downside is your log burner probabbly wont be lit every day and this would create bigger swings of heat and cold. Consistent temps is key.
The other thing i picked up on is Pond Balls.... Not really needed in a well functioning filter. If all your water tests are good then no need for additives.
What i find pond balls good for is after a parasite treatment. Ive just treated for white spot. Used FMG and i know this can potentially knock back filter bacteria.
This is when adding pond balls can help boost the filter.... of course this is "part of a calorie controlled diet" as you have to control the feeding. I weigh the feed out.
I have an ASHP and was heated throughout the winter to 13c. Just enough to maintain the immune system and a small daily feed.
I thought this would prevent Aeromas Alley... But one of my large goldfish was sulking (Koi were fine) Once netted, it had raised scales and i knew this was a parasite.
The Scrape i did wasn't the best and i didn't see anything in the microscope so i anti-bacc'd the wound and put some wound seal on.
Raised the pond temp by 2c a day until i got to 19c. On the 3rd day (once the pond was at 19c... i could see a few white spots (grains of salt) on my Gin-Rin Chag.... on a gin rin white spots stand out a mile!
So last Monday i put a treatment of FMG in. The spots on the chag have already gone... (to the next part of the lifecycle) which i'm hoping the FMG has killed them as they left
The Goldfish looks much better, is up first to feed and the fish are ravenous. Going to hold it another week at 19c and observe daily before i consider dropping the temp 1c a day back to 13c.
    2500 Gallon Pond.
Great Video, I love DIY hacks on the pond... especially when they cost nothing more than a piece of old pipe that was laying around or can be purchased at the hardware shop without the "Koi Tax" lol

    • @KoiPondLifestyle
      @KoiPondLifestyle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You are busy round your pond.. Damn Parasites are such a pain but your lucky you have the temps to treat.. Yeah the first thing would be converted to create heat to the pond but as you said the fire isn't always on so swings with temps wouldn't be good.. So far I'm free of parasites but now I've said it just you watch..🤔😮. Thank for your feedback and comments... Keep um coming.. Cheers, 😉👍

    • @davespages

Best going for a smaller pipe. You want VELOCITY. to shift the debris. If thats 40mm, reduce to 32mm and use a couple of 45 elbows to drop the pipe to the very bottom.
This is why we have to purge Bottom Drain pipes, because in most cases we've fit 4" pipe when a 3" would have had more velocity to prevent debris settlement.
I have made this mistake too. But i cant change it now as the pond is 2 years in lol.
4" BD Running a nexus 220 and my sweet spot is about 7000litres/hour but i max the 10k vari pump to 100% (10,000 litres/hour) i can see debris being pulled up into the nexus.

I think I’m going to lose this fish tonight its almost stopped moving.
Found it in the pond today on the bottom it was very cold last night but the other fish seem fine. Done a quick water test and it’s all fine.
I hope this is the only one I will lose this winter I think the problem is going to be the water freezing then warm then freezing it’s not stable. th-cam.com/video/luexU54zY3g/w-d-xo.html

I wouldn't touch it at the moment with the water so cold. I've had them before lying on their side for weeks looking like they were dead but came round once the water warmed. People make the mistake of taking them out and putting them indoors but the shock just finishes them off...🤔😉👍

@@KoiPondLifestyle yes I took it out put it in a bowl of pond water put a bit of salt in and a touch of bicarb before putting it back I dont think it will make the night one of its eyes was already turning grey.
