      I feel like a lot of the things ashley apologizes for in all her videos are exactly proving the point that girls/women are raised to be ashamed of what they enjoy. It's really groundbreaking of her to know and share that society is messed up in this way, and it's gonna take a lot of work for her (as well as all of us) to break that messed up thinking in ourselves.

      xOr yeah men have to keep up the act that they’re “cool” at all times. So guys who are into anime tend to be embarrassed/ashamed of it. But women deal with it on a much larger scale, almost all feminine activities are ridiculed. Women can only be seen as “cool” if they adhere to predominantly/stereotypically Male interests like sports and gaming.

    • @shutup6318
      @shutup6318 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      xOr ur replying to all these comments about misogyny and putting ur opinion in like it doesnt exist. Can you not just accept that this is a problem and women can talk about it when they want too. Stop trying to diminish womens feelings because you are an insecure troglodyte.

    I loved what you spoke about and it reminded me of when Harry Styles defended his younger female fans- “Who's to say that young girls who like pop music -- short for popular, right? -- have worse musical taste than a 30-year-old hipster guy,” Styles questioned. “That's not up to you to say. Music is something that's always changing. There's no goal posts. Young girls like the Beatles. You gonna tell me they're not serious?” “How can you say young girls don't get it?” Styles pointed out. “They're our future. Our future doctors, lawyers, mothers, presidents, they kind of keep the world going.” (Omg Ashley like my comment! ❤️)

    I’ve noticed that Ashley tends to talk about her generation like she’s not a part of it. She talks a lot about what the “kids these days” are doing but she’s one of them lol! I feel like she acts older than she is when she should be enjoying her youth. I saw another comment that said they don’t think Ashley realizes how many kids her age are on tiktok and that’s so true. I don’t mean this to any offense it’s just a personality trait I’ve noticed! Xoxo

      i feel like part of this is because she graduated college so early? like most other 21 yr olds are still in school, potentially not super financially stable yet and not really sure how to do Adulting Things but graduating college THAT fast just kinda forced her to grow up into a whole ass independent adult a lot faster than most
      but YEA it depends on who you follow! i'm not super active on tik tok but i've found a super big community of 20-somethings who also feel too old to be on the app but are obsessed (& popular!) anyways

    As a guy in his late teens when you said that society conditions guys in such a way that they question their own sexuality if they don't act "masculine". I. felt. that. I paint my nails, I like fashion (and sometimes I'm adventurous and I wear traditionally feminine clothing), and I love me a good rom com. Because of this, my sophomore year of high school I convinced myself that I was at least bi because what kind of straight guy enjoys any of that? It took me several years to finally figure it all out. I'm not gay, I'm not bi. I'm just a straight guy who happens to enjoy all of those wonderful things
    Edit: Thank you all so much for your support, y'all have definitely made my year. I hope that any other people out there who are like me can see this and feel just as validated as I do. Something that I've learned as I've gone through this little journey of mine is that if you express yourself the way you want to the people who don't like it will silently judge you. However, the people who like what you're doing will tell you to your face -- just like all of these wonderful people here. Don't be afraid to be who you are, people will love you for you, and hopefully you can love yourself too. Thank you all ♥️
    Edit 2: oops i'm a trans girl

      i think we romanticize teenage years waaaaay too much and end up thinking that anything above 18/19 is old when in reality, at ashley's age, you're still dealing with a little bit of that naivety of your younger years. yeah you're def not the same person you were in high school, but seeing people my age thinking they're too old to do fun stuff when they just recently turned the legal age for drinking alcohol in some countries is honestly almost heartbreaking

    the discussion you had about cultural capital is so important. I didn’t even know there was a term for this until a few months ago but it really puts things in perspective for me. What’s sad is it’s not just “basic” girls who are hated for their interests, but girls who are more alternative and into less stereotypically feminine things are also bashed for trying to be “quirky” and “not like other girls”. Basically, no matter what kind of girl you are, our male dominated society will find a way to make you feel bad about yourself.

    A while ago I watched a Ted talk that brought something that I dealt with for a long time in my life but never connected the dots on how it compared to my brother's interests... so in my teenage years, I liked one direction among other various boy groups and I was * still am* really into kpop. For that I was constantly picked on and made fun of by my brother and sometimes even my mother. So what the person said in the TED talk was why is it acceptable that boys like superheroes and are viewed as cool and when girls like barbies they are silly and fragile? The more important question is, why is any trait that is socially stereotyped as girly or feminine viewed as a gay thing when men do it? Why can't we just accept things for what they are?!
    In conclusion, men naturally don't like to feel threatened and since only not liking something doesn't actively show that they are distant from that certain thing, they have to show by publically hating on it, not knowing that it's way simpler than that. Traits are just traits and people are just people. Take things as they are.

    I loved the way you talked about how toxic and damaging the perspective in which we look down at "fangirls" and "basic girls" is, and how much it also affects men in their teens and makes them almost be forced to repress their own feelings towards pop culture in general. For example, I keep seeing all of these videos of rock dudes in their mid to late 20's reacting to songs by Taylor Swift and crying over how much her songs mean to them now, and it's honestly so refreshing to see but at the same time it's heartbreaking to know that it took them that long to be able to freely enjoy sappy, pop music and acknowledging that it can also speak to their emotions.

    Whenever she says "I'm too old, I'm 21!" Girl, 21 is a lil' baby. I'm actually pretty sure TIk Tok was made for people around your age group lol.
    You're only just getting into what will be years of learning experiences and madness. This is coming from a 27 year old who's only just getting settled with some things in her life. I genuinely DO feel old for tik tok. But I also see people on there who are definitely older than me so pretty sure it's just an app for everyone. I personally keep trying to get into it but I'm not getting the hype just yet

    • @michicrj

      So agree with this! Also in general hearing all these youtubers who are in their early 20s thinking they’re old.. you’re still experiencing the earliest stage of adult life, don’t be so quick to write yourself off! People act like turning 30 is an expiration date.

    • @Mondoshawn
      @Mondoshawn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Haha I thought the same. I forgot she is just 21. She is kind of an old soul. But still if I remember how most 21 year old are, they are basically still children, that fight to be seen as adults. But she would pass for a real adult if she would not define herself over such things as how much she likes tik tok. If you like tik tok thats ok at any age. She should know that its addicting because it targets the reward system of the brain.

    Seeing you so happy about turning yourself into an e-girl makes my heart jump!! I hate that so often we feel ashamed of simply doing harmless things that we know will bring us joy. I'm turning 21 this year and it makes me happy that I finally feel like I can do all the things I wanted to do when I was a teenager without fear of being ridiculed. Not that I won't be ridiculed because I ABSOLUTELY WILL BE, but now I a) don't care, and b) feel like I own myself more?? if that makes sense?? i mean, i don't owe shit to anyone anymore and people can't police me about the things I do anymore. Sometimes I'm ashamed bc I feel like maybe I'm too old for certain stuff, but then I remember that we're all gonna die one day and it could be very soon so I'm just gonna do the things that make me happy, I'm not hurting anyone so, whatever. As a 29 year old, I had so much fun going on this candid and lighthearted e-girl transformation with you and was happily surprised to encounter the surfacing of some very deep rooted issues and inconsistencies of our society among the fun. Love your perspective on issues, the approach you take in introducing them, your own struggles with acknowledging you (we) are also players in this game dictated by societal pressures. I think it’s awesome that you acknowledge being embarrassed... some comments seem to “shame” embarrassment. Anything that puts a vulnerable piece of yourself out there will be embarrassing. Most woman would be embarrassed to find an old video of them dancing at a party. It’s a human reaction. Embrace the embarrassment and then be proud of it! Good job Ashley, you are doing awesome stuff!

      I thought it a little generic, since both men and woman can like sports, action films or romcoms and fashion. I think it's totally subjective. I like action movies but I can't understand why people like watching sports. I like slice of life movies and anime but I also like dark and gritty movies and anime. All you need is a opinion with sound reasoning to back it up and people will find you intelligent regardless of the material. I've convinced people who hated anime and thought it was for nerdy emos to give it a try. I've allowed myself to watch horror movies based on friends recommendation and I've been surprised to find that I enjoyed a few. The media/internet has you to believing that Ashley's statement is true but I think that if you look at those that matter, friends, family, acquaintances...that's not the conclusion of the general populace.
      I'm not great at explaining things. Sorry.
