I like how it basically just ate every obstacle. To me it proves that although its older, it still cannot be underestimated, everything is mechanical which may take slightly longer than just simply turning a knob or dial, yet it works the same if not better. I have a v8 disco 1 and I wouldn't trade it for the world. Its simplistic and has real 4wd not any electronic awd system that is likely to fail when you need it the most potentially leaving you stranded

The old Defenders come down to Driver skill you feel what the the wheels are doing through the steering wheel, the new defender is all electronics it's a bad mix just because it says defender on the tin doesn't mean it's a defender under the hood, because the new defender isn't.

@@sturdivanthouse4614 surprisingly it has never actually left me stranded. (Meaning needing it towed home) The shift solenoid almost did once however I took apart the center console and used a center punch on it so that would never happen again. Problem solved lol. It has 220k miles on it. I done alot of work to mine rebuilding it better than factory even. Ive replaced the headgaskets, thermostat, fan clutch, fan blades, new wheel bearings all around, new brake calipers all around painted caliper red, new pads and rotors all around, new brake servo, new master cylinder, new brake stop switch, new rear differential gasket, all drained/flushed and replaced, new ignition coil pack, new spark plugs and wires (yearly), new oil pan gasket, upgraded HD steering and track rods, upgraded HD pan hard rod, new power steering gearbox, all new silicone hoses. Its one of the best offroad vehicles you can get. It's more reliable than the disco 2 in alot of ways. Primarily being the 3 amigos and traction control issues. I've probably put 6 to 7k worth of parts and another 15k worth of labor into it however you learn exactly how your vehicle works and every part that makes it work by replacing everything yourself which I have done. There really isn't anything on a disco 1 that will honestly fail causing it to be actually disabled apart from the fuel inertia switch, fuel relay, fuel pump and timing chain, unless you crack the block or put a rod through the side of it. I'm currently putting a new fuel relay and pump on my discovery as we speak, I'm of the mindset to replace things before they need replacing. After all any vehicle is only as reliable as its maintenance schedule regardless of the make and model. I honestly love the vehicle, most people wouldn't put that much into a 20 year old vehicle but then again I'm not most people I'm very meticulous of my vehicles. In the next 12 months I plan on putting a 2 to 3 inch old man emu lift , upgrading all axel half shafts to hd, replacing and upgrading both drive shafts, upgrading to ashcroft air locking differentials front and rear, I also plan on getting diff guards and oil/steering guards.

Just for fun yes, it has the badging, but the badging is placed differently than it would have come from the factory. The front and rear bumpers are those of the SR5, there is no hood scoop, and the rear hatch has body matched paint where it says 4Runner. That’s an SR5. The defender is sitting on the rock on its rear suspension arm at 8:07 and 8:30. Basically, the car goes up when the air suspension is raised, but the lower suspension arms stay where they are. The 2005 Taureg TFL used in previous videos has more ground clearance than the new Defender, so 15 years ago VW just threw something out that may well have ticked more off road boxes than this and sold it as a luxury SUV. Losing chunks of the lower control arm on a rock a Suzuki Jimny would have cleared is pretty shameful, but part of it is that I suspect everyone driving was so used to beam axle 4x4s that it didn't occur to them that the new Defender would need to use the trail differently.

They could have also made the control arms longer and mounted closer to the vehicles center line for better travel numbers.

I really can't get all that hate, that is pouring down on new Defender. The brand Land Rover has changed since 90's and 00'. It is a luxury brand now, and some need to face it. The Defender 2020 is also a different vehicle, than old one. It is neither an agricultural machine, that can be fixed with hammer, duct tape and wire, nor off-road monster. It is most competent and capable SUV, not hardcore off-roader. Independent pneumatic suspension provides much better handling and smooth gliding over majority of surfaces. I can't even imagine how terrible would be to travel 700+ miles in one day in old Defender, Wrangler or Bronco, while in new Defender it shouldn't be any problem. All you need before going into rough terrain is to change set of tyres from 22" Pirelli to 18" BF Goodrich. It is something that no other car can offer. New Defender is way more versatile, than any other regular off-road vehicle with live axle. IFS is really a big steep forward.

Absolutely love the new Defender , it is unmatched when it comes to all round ability , the only vehicle in this video that can be used as a daily driver as 95% of the time it will be on road , ( the jury is still out off road without a rear diff lock ) Americans seem to have a deluded view of the old school Defender , possibly because they have been deprived of it for 23 years , it was incredibly noisy , cramped , uncomfortable , really poor performance & economy , no creature comforts and had a dated interior , and along with Jeeps are hopeless on tarmac and will kill you in a collision , not sure if all this hate is prejudice or ignorance , idiots are comparing top of the line Defender against stock Jeeps , i configured one to my required spec ( don't need so many extras , no need to worry about damaging the base wheels ) it came to around $ 53 ,000 which i think is amazing value !.

Possibly it's because they've put a defender badge on a family SUV to grab a few sales on the back of the defenders heritage, this will never be a true Defender, which was primarily a commercial, agricultural and military work horse just like the original Jeep!
This new SUV is in reality a new discovery/freelander replacement, and probably a very very good one,
When I see one camo'd up being used by the British Army, or being used by determined and courageous people to explore the toughest parts of the globethen I'll call it a defender!
And yes, my daily is a 'proper' Defender, comfy enough if you stretch your legs every 3hrs ;-)

Talking about lockers and whatnot. I recently went out for 50 miles of trail with some technical spots (about as technical as red cone). We had 4 stock vehicles (the tires were upgraded). We had a 4 runner SR5, 2019 Jeep Grand trailhawk, Taco TRD-off-road, 2019 ford ranger (it has a leveling kit and one size up in tires). These all did fabulously. We didn't use lockers just the terrain select modes and electronics to get up the trail. I was really impressed with all the vehicles. @@DuckSherminator Something else that I was disappointed by with the Defender is that it is not available with active sway bars. The Active Roll Control system on my L320 Range Rover Sport is great on-road as it can effectively hydraulically stiffen the sway bars (front and rear) when cornering to significantly reduce body roll. The additional benefit of this system is that it can loosen also when in some of the Terrain Response modes like Rock Crawl. Independently sprung vehicles are always limited in wheel travel, however, between the cross-link air system and the active sway bars, I think that it performs extremely well! Would have been nice to see the Defender with this. Also, the one shown in this video lacks the optional rear e-diff which would have also helped some of that wheel slip. At the start they said they were using the mud and ruts setting on the Defender. I don't know if they left it there or changed later, but if so that explains all the wheel spin - mud and ruts deliberately allows some spin to clear tread and maintain RPM. They should be using rock crawl mode which tries to limit spin and softens throttle response. If they did actually switch to RC, then we're seeing the limits of the system. Frankly all brake based traction control systems are a poor substitute for manually selectable lockers anyway.

They counted aired down as 18 psi, thought that sounded high and saw why in some of the close up shots around 19 minutes - they're about 10mm off those shiny alloy rims crawling over small rocks with all for wheels on the ground - part of the struggle was they couldn't air down properly and even at 18psi they couldn't use any momentum at all without trashing the rims, another issue the lower suspension arms are massive, square, come out well below the centre of the wheel and look like they take up about 1/3 of the width of the truck no wonder they were leaving metal scrapings everywhere

the hidden message in this video tells you why Toyota has been so successful in the 4*4 industry. despite the fact that it has completed all the obstacles, Toyotas are 10 times durable than the other cars and in case you break something it will cost you half of the price to repair.
no wonder the middle east where the offroad has the most extreme sand dunes and excessive heat are dominated by Land cruisers and FJs and Nissan Patrols. fun fact, almost half of the cars in the streets are SUVs in the gulf countries!

guys nobody gets offended please. i don't own the company and neither do you. i used to have a GXR land cruiser that i sold over 400,000 km ( 250,000 milage) that used to work just fine, seriously tires and break pads and AC maintainances besides the oil change that all i changed!!. as a matter of fact those Japanese SUVs are the best in after market sale they just operate to infinity. in our hot and dry aggressive terrains jeeps after 200,000 km ( 125,000 milage) are almost a goner. letterly nobody buys them and in case you do get one (which is VERY CHEAP) you're gonna pay a fortune for maintenance and repair.
it's probably different in other cold regions of the world, but seriously guys if anybody has ever come in here and experience the obsession of off-roading will realize what'm talking about.
if anybody has seen Rally Dakkar 2020 will know the mighty EMPTY QUARTER. do you know that Toyotas and Nissans crossing this MARS LIKE dessert and some of them even in factory tires!!!
no over heat, no stucking in giant dunes, no breaks and electrical errors. unbreakables!

@@s3dm7md I can attest to that, in the desert the suburbans, pickups and jeeps did not hold up well, but that old Land Cruiser we had worked great, and best of all, the A/C always worked and it never broke down. We did have a stick shift xj that was a blast but it didn't have A/C. This was back in 2000. Our chevys were total crap
Stuff broke left and right and if you found one with a working A/C you were lucky. And some of these vehicles were less than a year old. Those Land Cruisers and Nissan Patrols the UN had were bulletproof.

Here's an honest review/thoughts about how the cars performed.
Firstly I think all of us would've been VERY disappointed in any vehicle that didn't survive that trail. So props to all of them for completing it.
Secondly there are quite a few props about the forerunner completing/keeping up or tugging along just fine. And I think it's only fair to point out that the forerunner took the easier route on one or two obstacles that I noticed. In particular the spot where the gladiator got very hung up at 16:25. Later you can see the forerunner taking an easier route.
Third the new defender. Look it was bouncing and struggling over every obstacle. I was ready to be impressed by the computer system and expected the land rover to just crawl over everything like any other 4x4. But that's not what we saw. It was jumping and not finding traction when it should've. It's no secret the new defender is a nice mall crawler for rich people. But come on how can they call that a defender.
Fourth obviously the old defender does that trail no problem look how built it is. I expected no less from it. Yeah throw in a joke how it probably broke down right after finishing that trail. But who doesn't love seeing an old 4x4 on the trail.
Fifth the gladiator. Man it got hung up bad. But it did handle that trail really well. It's a little long on the trail but it still made it up to the top like everyone else. Also just got to point out the tacoma's longest wheelbase can be 140.6" and the gladiator is 137.3" so just saying the gladiator is shorter than SOME Tacomas

Then I perused realtor.com for property for sale in Colorado or Montana (and I think Wyoming too)... for my future rock-crawling adventures, of course.
Now to put that into context: I've never actually driven off road before (intentionally). I do drive a AWD Subaru Crosstrek... but, in Chicago - among the flattest locations in America. Driving down an unpaved alleyway is probably the closest to off-road I've ever gone.

    • @donhappel9566
      @donhappel9566 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

They said at the start they were using mud and ruts setting on the Terrain Response system. I don't know if they changed to rock crawl later or not. Mud and Ruts is the wrong setting for that trail; it's going to allow some wheel spin as a way to clear mud from tread and keep RPMs up (as you would in the mud). But for crawling you want minimum spin. So if they left it in M&R that explains some of the issues. If they did change to RC, then we're seeing either poor programming of the system or it's inability to respond quickly enough to stop the spin. Either way, that's why having a manually selectable locker is always better. You can lock it BEFORE you need it to avoid spin which can cause you to slip off a line or spit out a rock. Even the best traction control systems (and I do believe the Rover system is the best available) can only react AFTER spin - and in most cases that's too late. Even the factory rear locker option on the Defender2 suffers from this to some degree as you cannot manually engage it - you have to rely on the computer to do so when it sees fit. The more aggressive settings for the Terrain Response such as rock crawl mode cause it to engage more readily, but it's still not as good as manual for an experienced driver. I can only assume they automate everything in order to 'dumb it down' for inexperienced drivers and to self-limit torque (and hence protect the driveline) in case of binding. But again, an experienced driver with manual controls can out-crawl even the most advanced brake based 'simulated lockers'.

That's a bit of a misleading spec. That's measuring to the Rubi's difs. But that's a single point (OK, 2 points) that you can maneuver around. The rest of the vehicle is actually much higher. Independent suspension vehicles tend to be roughly the same clearance everywhere, so you don't have the ability to simply steer the dif around an obstacle to clear it, instead you end up getting more easily high-centered. Another point is the suspension links are more vulnerable on an indi vehicle compared to solid axles. This was on display when the lower link of the Defender2 was hanging on a rock in this video. In that same position a solid axle would have cleared.
