    I think when people say as American as apple pie they're talking about apple pie as a part of the US's culture and not the origin of apple pies. I live in Ireland and people associate beer and potatoes as being very Irish even though potatoes are originally from south america and beer has a german origin.

      Alexis Filigree that is true beer did originate in the middle east but while Egypt was one of the first crafters of beer the origins of beer actually trace back to ancient Mesopotamian & Sumerian civilization if you wish to learn more here is a Wikipedia article en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_beer also here is an actual image of a ancient beer receipt from the ancient Sumerian city of Umma en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_beer#/media/File:Alulu_Beer_Receipt.jpg

    Nothing in the US is truely original, and much of our culture can be attributed to our European ancestors. The being said America's culture is still uniquely American. We combine many cultures to form one, it allows us to get the best parts of cultures from all over the world. Granted it also gave us some of the worst parts of culture, but American culture is all about taking ideas from other cultures, and combining them together. Its like the casserole of cultures, except its actually pretty nice.

    To be fair, I challenge you to name one "American" food that wasn't culturally appropriated. Hamburgers come from Germany, french fries come from either France or Belgium, pizza comes from Italy, corn comes from a whole bunch of different Native American cultures; America's food , somewhat indicatively of the rest of it, is a grab bag of other cultures. If you ask me, if you want a uniquely American food experience, you have to just try a bunch of different foods from a bunch of different regions and origins. America's a diverse country, and its food reflects that.

      The original colonists were mostly British, yes. But by the time of the American Revolution, many colonists were born on North American soil and spent their days in a society felt oppressed by the English monarchy. One reason why the American Revolution was so explosive was because it turned brother against brother, dividing the loyalties of families. Colonists didn't want to be seen as British because they felt shafted by the British rule over them.

    • @perthrockskinda2946
      @perthrockskinda2946 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, technically no, the recipe of Pumpkin pie comes from the UK too, it was a squash pie that has just been swapped for pumpkin because that was the local veg when the pioneers arrived in the Americas but the spices and the recipe is basically the same as the British recipe.

    • @1218Draco

      drewpre Except that all squash originated in America. The term “squash“ comes from “Askoot Asquash” which is Algonquin for “eaten green”, A name a kin to the fact that most squash should be eaten about a week after their blossom fully opens. The settlers in America learn how to grow pumpkins from the Native Americans and it help them get through the winter months. And originally, “pumpkin pie”, being a crust with a filling, would’ve been impossible for the early Americans who lacked the flour, fat, and ovens to make a pie crust. Earliest pumpkin pie would’ve been more of a pumpkin soup, as Alton Brown demonstrated on his show, Good Eats.

    The crust in apple pie used to be much denser than what we know today. Breads and crusts were used as a kind of plate, called "trenchers". After the meal you could eat the trencher with sauce, or it was fed to livestock or given as alms to the poor.

    • @FlashMan
      @FlashMan 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Let's be honest, America did not invent the stereotype. Americans have made lots of stuff that have attributed to the "pure American" image however. Rock and Roll, Rap, movies, American Football, the ability to fly, Baseball, lots of stuff.

    • @CreamTheEverythingFixer
      @CreamTheEverythingFixer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +FlashMan The first ever film recorder was invented by a French man something Edison copied then copyrighted it.
      American Football is a altered version of Rugby and Football is soccer and Baseball is a altered version of Rounders
      Don't be suggesting the ability to fly was invented, as the Wright Brothers made the successful airplane long distance however a New Zealander made a design and it traveled 350 yards before crashing a number of months before the Brothers.
      Rapping came from a Jamaican and Rock and Roll hasn't got anything conflicting in origin

      Cultural appropriation shouldn't make you cringe, it's just a term for a thing that exists. It doesn't have to mean that it's a _bad_ thing, just a thing. Borrowing the best/most useful ideas other people have come up with is how we as a species advance, and I don't see anyone suggesting it's wrong for a Chinese person to practice western medicine of a black person to play the piano, even though those are also examples of appropriation.

      Not necessarily. Apple pie predates strudel by 300 years. The two are unrelated, since during the time apple pie was invented, england and germany didnt really interact that much. Apple pie was probably inspired by dutch or french desserts.
