    At my local Pizza Hut if you ask for coke they'll give you pepsi without asking because they don't have coke. If they ask if it's okay, some customers will ask for water instead, their bill will be lower, and the waiter runs a higher risk of not meeting their quota. So it's pretty much common policy to give the customer something they didn't ask for in this case. I know it's not the same, but still dirty and underhanded. They pressure their wait staff so that they'll really push the customer into getting something they didn't really want, because they have quotas to fill.

I once ordered a veggie burger at an a&w. they gave me a chicken burger. when I asked the lady why, she said they didn't have any veggie burgers. so I asked for a refund, she replied with "can't you eat it anyway", I ignored her. so I got a full refund (I already had my fries before the burger arrived, so there's a bright side) . moral of the story, tell someone you don't have the item, else they might leave for inadequate service.

    beyond just mislabeling, there were also a few fish species that get 'special' names for restaurants to make them sound more appealing. "chilean sea bass" is actually Patagonian Toothfish. "Red Snapper" does exist, but that technically refers to the atlantic version, while many places sell a breed from the pacific normally called the "rockfish" (renaming also lets them charge the red snapper price, which is higher, despite it not being the same quality of fish-just closely related). And if you ever ordered an "orange roughy"-congrats...you ate a Slimehead (the actual name and family name for that species). "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet"-but apparently the same fish won't be as good with a bad name?

      Escolar is seriosly delicious, and you can eat up to six ounces before having negative digestive effects.. Sushi restaraunts will only sell this as "white tuna" along with other great tasting and high quality fish like yellow tail tuna.. Theres no way it would pass as red tuna (yellow fin being the most common).. If you just ask what kindof "white" tuna they are serving, your likely to get a truthfull asnwer as long as the server is knowledgable or asks the chef.. another popular "white" tuna is albacore, white is still quite tasty... Probably not litterally classified as tuna but it has kidof just ended up in that grouping for whatever reason.. Probably to help the customers understand the flavor profile.........

    • @Virtuoso80
      @Virtuoso80 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Escolar is the super milky-white piece they give you. High-end places usually don't serve it. If you get your sushi from a cheaper place or the supermarket, that's usually when you get the imitation fish. Also, wild salmon is really easy to tell from farmed salmon when raw, it has a different color and a lot more flavor. Got to the fish market and look at the expensive salmon vs. the cheap salmon and you'll see the difference.

    This is US-based; in other countries, the farmed salmon are actually given feed that contains krill, and the pigment that gives krill its pink colour is so easy to synthesize, they can produce it artificially and add it to feed that doesn't necessarily contain krill. This way, the tissues are naturally pink. Also, the feed is usually fish offal (the bits you don't want to eat, like the liver, stomach, and other organs), not chicken.

      The whole show is very U.S. Based. Sometimes limited or even wrong. For example, in one episode they strongly suggested German Americans were not interned during WW2 which is not true. It didn't happen to them on as large a scale as Japanese Americans, but it did happen.

      Interestingly the answer could be no. Humans make preconceptions about our environment before we even realize it. Brain scanning proves that if you gave someone food without telling them the brand they might not like it much, or not rate it any different to others. But if you then give them its brand they will instantly rate it higher, their own mind overrode their taste buds and told them that they liked it more.
      So if you expected a pink salmon and were handed the grey one your mind could have already decided to hate it and attribute every upset stomach gurgle you feel for the next week to that one plate of food.

    • @l3fth4nd
      @l3fth4nd 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Because krill get their color from eating an abundance of phytoplankton, which is rich in beta-carotene. As long as salmon - or any animal for that matter - continues to consume large quantities of food/prey rich in beta-carotene, they'll turn red.
      And phytoplankton is the key source of all food webs in just about any body of water.

    • @l3fth4nd

      Was that Halloween candy you might have eaten last weekend deceptive? It would most likely just be sort of off-white sugar bits if it wasn't artificially colored. The appearance of food has an effect on the overall experience and I don't see why it's any different for salmon meat.
      As for wild vs farmed salmon: These days farmed salmon does not seem to contain any more mercury or other pollutants than wild. (reference: www.doh.wa.gov/CommunityandEnvironment/Food/Fish/FarmedSalmon ).
      There are negative environmental effects to fish farms and and it's a balancing act between those and over fishing of wild fish populations. Both forms of fish productions have their dark sides but human health does not really seem to be an issue. If you want to be environmentally conscious you can avoid both if you simply do not eat fish.

    • @0IIIIII
      @0IIIIII 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      IamQuh Yeah, and I didn't eat any of that. I carefully track the ingredients, avoid, and read up on additives. I'm not a hippy, and considering lobbying and the revolving door in politics, and that some artificial food additives, such as some artificial colors, have already been banned in the US and abroad due to health concerns, I think I am logical to be wary. Also, when I said famed salmon has problems, I wasn't necessarily referring to health problems, but problems in general such as environmental concerns, such as the use of antibiotics, diseased fish, and the risk of farmed specimens escaping and contaminating the wild.

    get your fish from places that break down *whole* fish themselves.

    A couple caveats:
    The chemical that is used to dye farmed salmon pink is the exact same natural chemical (Astaxanthin) that gives krill its red color. So no, you're not eating food coloring.
    The mislabeling of tuna is actually the fault of the English language (and lax regulations on the seafood industry). "White tuna" refers to both albacore and snake mackerel. If something says "white tuna" instead of albacore, you should just not take the risk.

      1-Your own health (vegans are less likely to get several deadly chronic diseases)
      2-Helping to end animal agriculture would reduce the chance of another pandemic & other zoonotic diseases
      3-Helping to end animal ag would reduce the chance of the development of an antibiotic resistant pathogen.
      4-Animal ag wastes a huge amount of fresh water. Each vegan saves 219,000 gallons of water every year!
      5-Animal ag is a major cause of water pollution
      6-Animal ag is a major cause of deforestation
      7-Animal ag increases PTSD and spousal abuse in the people who work in slaughterhouses. Workers in meat packing facilities often endure terrible, dangerous working conditions.
      8-Animal ag is a major cause of the loss of habitat and biodiversity
      9-Needless killing of innocent, sentient beings cannot be ethically justified.
      10- It is the single most effective way for each of us to fight climate change and environmental degradation.
      11- Longer lifespan.
      12- Healthier weight (vegans were the only dietary group in the Adventist Studies that had an average BMI in the recommended range.)
      13- A healthy plant based diet significantly reduces the chances of ED later in life, and even 1 meal can improve bedroom performance
      14- Vegetarians and vegans have lower rates of dementia later in life
      15- A plant based diet could save money! You could reduce your food budget by one third!
      16- A vegan world would save 8 million human lives a year, and $1 trillion in health care and related costs (Oxford Study)

    Okay, as a marine biologist i should clarify the two “real” tuna species are under threat of going extinct due to over fishing by mainly the japanese. The farmed salmon is absolutely nothing wrong with, in fact wild salmon contains extremely high levels of mercury making it toxic! The fact is they mislabel because no one wants to eat Bonito or skipjack even though it tastes very very similar to tuna, this video has a bad narrative, Adam please correct. @CollegeHumor

    First time I ever had Salmon, it was wild Samon. My Aunt and Uncle caught it in Alaska, and skinned / prepped it for our family.

    Hehe. Made the mistake of eating escolar at room temperature that was last refrigerated four hours ago. The result was major digestion problems, headache, and a slower pulse. Takes days to recover but I just continued my daily routine while suffering.

    Mislabeling is illegal and you will end up in jail for few years in my homeland.
    Not having original papers clearly identifying the cow for steak caused one restaurant to be publicly ashamed across the country and paying over the yearly financial turnover in fines.

    I was worried when I saw the title but when I found he was only talking about farmed salmon I was relieved. Where I live (Washington) we have a thriving wild salmon population (well compared to other places). I get all my fish from my neighbor who is a fisherman, when ever they have to much fish. I was worried that my favorite food was going to be ruined.

    The only time I eat Salmon is when I fished for it my self. I used to live in Tacoma, Washington and would go fishing quite a bit. I then moved to Texas and ordered Salmon once and could tell the something was quite... fishy. 😂😂

    the pink pigment for farmed salmon is produced synthetically but is chemically the exact same as the natural pigment in krill. I cant say for sure what the feed is made from, but as a worker in the industry I have no problem whatso ever eating farmed fish.
