Nowadays, they race around in outboard-powered aluminum boats, snowmobiles, and four-wheelers, firing high-powered, scoped rifles on their "Traditional" treaty hunts.
Their harpoon barbs must have been very cleverly designed. There were three men on the line, I presume the fourth man waded in and killed the animal somehow. Possibly the tug-of-war was prolonged somewhat for filming purposes.
I was watching this in the '60's. Believe it or not, we had colour film back then. Comments on this film would have been much the same then as they are now, but perhaps not so many of the animal rights nutters.
Great video. I love how they figured out how to hunt these animals as a team. Polar bears can’t take them down but men can with harpoons and rope. That is awesome. Now I’m wondering…how does walrus taste?
I've used a harpoon when I was working in the Arctic. I went out a group of Inuit on a bolluga hunt. I harpooned a 10 foot one. You just ride along side one and stab it with the harpoon then pull the rope which is attached to the point of the harpoon which when pulled it pivots the top of harpoon like a grapple. Allow the animal to swim and drown. Then drag it to the beach. The women do all the butchering. This is true.
They air dry thin strips as well as make stews of meat, cooked on a simple stove powered by the flammable oil made from melted blubber ( fat). Chewing high density fat helps in that cold!!!
I admire the Inuit for hunting with primitive weapons and they should be able to hunt like this all year long! When they use high powered weapons developed by the Whiteman they should be limited when they hunt these animals!
