- Here is a Drumcam recorded with my Zoom Q3HD of the song 'Deadhead' from the Devin Townsend Band album - 'Accelerated Evolution'. This is a VERY popular song to our fans live and we pretty much have played it every tour we have done in the DTB or DTP.
The song itself is based more on feel and groove than being technical and flashy. Sometimes it's harder for drummers to lay it down SOLID as opposed to always throwing fills in and over-playing. That is one of the main reasons I wanted to post this Drumcam... to show it's not all about being technical, even when you play in a progressive metal band like the DTP. Timing and feel are HUGE on a song like this or any song you play, especially when playing to a click and samples, you have to try and make it sound like you're not playing to a click... FEEL it ;) That is the best I can describe this drum cam. I've worked just as hard on timing, groove and feel as I have on being technical.... they are both important to have. Just my two cents...
This was recorded on our Australian Soundwave Tour during Feb/March, 2012. It was taken from a show we did with Meshuggah at The Forum in Melbourne. What an awesome show that was..... Meshuggah are one of my gavotte bands EVER!
Hope you enjoy the Drumcam... and thank you for your support :)

Best - RVP
One of the best tunes in all of music...
That is my 20" Sabian AA Rock Ride. Have had it for like 20 years! Love its versatile sound... probably my favourite cymbal of my whole setup.
Defiantly one of the best songs I've heard in my life.
I've only seen you live once, but from what i saw then combined with what i've seen and heard on youtube and on cd, i'd say you're one of my favourite drummers to watch and listen to because you always play so solid and with so much feeling. Feeling is indeed something that so many musicians lack today when it comes to drumming or guitarplaying or singing and so on, so it's always a great joy to listen to/watch musicians like you and Devin play! Keep hitting those poor drums into oblivion!!!
SO AWESOME to hear the crowd sing over everything!
Damn, solid dude!!! Awesome sound, awesome rhythms, perfect band!!!
Fantastic job Ryan. Can't wait to hear Epicloud and see you guys again.
These are absolutely awesome to watch. Met you in Pittsburgh before the show at Mr. Smalls and again forgot to tell you how much I enjoy watching these and getting to hear the drums isolated! Incredible. Every time I meet the band I get so overwhelmed I forget everything I was going to say :)
Im seeing you guys at Getaway rock festival, and I don´t know weither to cry or go crazy when you start playing this song. It´s just such a beautiful song :) can´t wait to see what I´ll do once you hit that first note ;)
I cry, every time.
love watching your drum cams! keep posting them! can't wait to see you guys in minneapolis again!!
Ryan, this is awesome to see along with the explanation. I've absolutely loved your style. Thanks a bazillion for supporting Devin with your own unique rhythm and emotion, it contributes a major part. Looking forward to your next Seattle show.
Cool. Thanks for the info!
Nailed it.
always enjoy your drumcams Ryan :)
We use Ultimate Ear Custom In-Ear Monitors. They're custom molded to your ears. Great sounding, high quality and worth every penny! We all use the '7Pro Custom' In-Ear monitors in the DTP. Dev had the DTP logo put on his, you can get whatever design you want on them for a little extra cash. Again, awesome product!
AFAIK RVP still usually uses a Pearl Reference 14x6.5 Brass snare. One of my favorite sounding ones, wish I had the money for one. :P Not sure how much he varies heads, but his website says Evans Hybrid Coated for live.
As far as i know, they all wear in-ear monitors and play along to a click track.
Since Devin's music is full of sound effects and synths and stuff, to get that all live and in the right places they play along to the click so they are perfectly in time with the studio recording I guess so it all sounds right :)
This song is soo awesome it got me laid long time ago haha the power of music 🤣 I wish Devin Townsend was my neighbor I got a lot of things to thank him for
Amazing RVP! Hopefully you posted this over on the Pearl Forum! Kit sounds sick! I play Reference as well!
This is great Ryan! One of my favorite songs by Mr. Townsend! I'm wondering what ride you are using.. Could you tell me? :)
I am not even a drummer, and I think this is fucking bad ass
Awesome stuff! What is the ride you're using? Really digging the sound.
Ryan this is awesome mate love your style, what is that crash cymbal that you ride in most of this song? looks so heavy !
That's a Sabian HHX 20" X-Plosion Crash
Hey Ryan, when you play, does the band follow your tempo or are you listening to something to follow? Just curious. Great playing man
What PeppersGhost08 said is completely correct :)
What snare is that?! CHRIST.
growing hair lately? ;)
