  • If your a car enthusiast, chances are you have seen the film Smokey and the Bandit. All of the Trans Ams used in the movie "Smokey and the Bandit" were destroyed by the end of the movie so Burt Reynolds had 3 Bandit Pontiac Trans Ams made for him and a few more trans am he had signed and title in his name. this being one of the cars he had titled in his name and signed.
We will dive into some history on the car, and about the movie in this review.
Burt Reynold's Smokey and the Bandit Pontiac Trans Am.
EDIT: This car is equipped with a 403 oldmobile motor not a 400 pontiac.
Its is also the first trans am built for Burt Reynolds
This car is for sale, view it here

That car and movie where a huge influence on me as a kid. I never owned one as much as I wanted too. Still do. But both of my brothers owned them. Both had two. A Classic Black one (factory), a gold flake one (custom painted with an awesome “chicken”) a red one, new from the factory and a brown one also custom painted with an orange, yellow and bronze leafed bird. Sound crazy but it was beautiful. Awe the memories. 😃

Great video-Classic! I was a kid in the 70's, so this is part of my youth. Another movie from the same time period that pairs Burt and Sally with a Trans-Am is Hooper-where they put a rocket engine in the back of the TA to do an Evel Knievel-style jump over a canyon-great flick! Nothing is as iconic as the black and gold Phoenix, though.

I loved that movie so much when I was kid, I wanted to BE Burt Reynolds! When I was growing up, he was the biggest movie star on EARTH! In 1984 my family purchased our first VCR, the first movie that I purchased in my life was Smokey and the Bandit... I still have it, costed me $31.95 in 1984!! I had to save my money up to purchase it, I was working as a paperboy making 60 dollars a month, and most of that 60 bucks went to the payments on my bicycle- so if I remember right it tooks me somewhere around 3 months to have the money to purchase that VHS tape, which is now worth maybe 50 cents at a yard sale haha!

My Dad had one of the few gorgeous two-toned silver Tenth Anniversary editions Of the Trans Am...silver leather interior with the “chicken” embroidered in the bucket headrests. I have to admit, that back then, I saw these as over-styled cars for old men wanting their youth back or ostentatious Iranian gold chain wearing guys whose parents wealth had them in the colleges all over the U.S. While my tastes ran more to Datsun Zs and Mazda Rx-7s (small, light and spirited) I’d come home from the Navy....and I was absolutely impressed with this beast’s pure, unadulterated power. And with the bland styling of cars today, this one really “shouts” “I’m here......but not for long!!”

COOLEST American car in 1977 & 78 IMO. By far. Too bad I was 13 at the time. I would've hocked all my possessions + a pint of blood or two for one of those cars when new. The way they sounded, the way they screeched tires, the way they hauled... Those T-tops... Who cares if they leaked. Design got ruined in 79 when they changed the headlights. Thanks for the video!!!

The 4 cars sent by Pontiac were actually the 1976 10th anniversary models with the 1977 front ends placed on them. They were also 455 cubic inch engines, but the decals were changed to reflect the 77 model year engines in liters (6.6 T/A).

The cars were not 455 cars. All the 50 anv. 455 cars were 4spd trans the cars in the movie are all auto trans 400 cid with 180hp the call out on thw Shaker in the movie is 6.6 litre not TA 6.6 that was used for the W72 400 cid 200hp engine . Burt was given a new TA every year including the '77 from GM until the president changed I forget which year it was. Also the DOT changed the way HP was rated and went from Net hp tested on a dyno with NO accessories including and electric powered water pump and could be run with open headers. The change was made to SAE standards and tested with ALL accessories ac, water pump, alternator, PS pump and smog pump with factory exhaust to be as installed in a car, so the power ratings were really much more accurate as to what you really got when you buy the cars.

That car should have the Safe-T-Track limited slip diff, shouldn't it? And yeah, that's a 403 car. Maybe that's why it doesn't have the limited slip? I have to agree that this particular T/A was probably just a car that someone built to make some quick bucks. Burt would sign anything for a 100 bucks or more. Olds 403 engine with standard axle? It looks like someone put after market remote locks and power windows in. Probably not a Trans Am to start with. I think all Trans Am's had Saf-T-Track rear ends with the larger engine. Some builders do that to save money. I would say that this is a Tribute Special Edition Trans Am from what I see. I see that this one was titled in 2014 to Burt thru an Agency. Based on the skid marks it appears it doesn’t have posi traction. I would assume a totally kitted out trans am replica of Smokey and the bandit would have that. One thing about that era of trans ams and Camaros of that time is you gotta keep an eye out for rust near the chrome molding around the front and rear windows. GM didn’t do a great job of rust proofing that back then. Most restorations have had to remove the chrome molding and rust proofing the metal under and around it.

Unserstand this car has posi but the driveshaft torque lifts the right rear tire and plants the left tire hard, hence light marks on pavement from right tire, but dark black marks from planted left rear tire...
Open rear end wears out only right rear tire fast, posi wears out left rear tire faster despite both spinning...
Learned all that back in the day from my '65 GTO...
Leaf spring hot cars with posi usually had an extra leaf in the right rear spring to help hold the right rear tire down better... and prevent axle wind up/tire hopping...

About the bird logo, sadly, she knows what she is talking about (link below). Anyway, that logo design was a success because inspired people with a very powerful bird.
The point is that, besides it is funny for her repeat the derogatory "Screaming Chicken" (compare it for example with the much better "Screamin' Eagle", the HD brand), probably most of fans prefer Firebird, because if not the car would have been called _Pontiac RoastChick_ :P , and is not the case.
And if it is about making jokes, she faces to be called _Screaming Chick_ ... XD

What? All Pontiac Trans Am's have a limited slip G80 Posi-traction GM Corporate 10-bolt as standard which was option on a base model firebird. L80 403 Oldsmobile or L78 400 Pontiac doesn't matter, it did not affect the driveline choice, and still always came with a limited slip differential. Looking at the video where the hood is open, it does indeed look like a Pontiac 400 as I cannot see the 403 Oldsmobile oil filler tube which should be visible from that angle on the right hand side of the block. So, in short, you've got no idea what you are talking about and an Oldsmobile 403 made 5hp more than the base L78 400.

That bunch landed on “hood bird” four decades ago and refuse to budge. Others go with “Rising Phoenix” or simply “Firebird.” Calling it Screaming Chicken degrades the symbol of a beautiful eagle on the hood. My personal opinion. The term “chicken” or “screaming chicken” is absurd and disrespectful to the brand. Anyone who believes that Pontiac had a chicken in mind when designing the logo is a moron. The “chicken” was a derogatory term made up in the 70’s and early 80’s by Mustang and Corvette fanboys to try to degrade the brand.
It was never called a chicken in the owners manual and was called many things but never “chicken” by real Trans Am fans. Maybe it’s a ummmm a FIREBIRD!? That might work too! Nobody would put a chicken on a muscle car.
