5:41... Mr. David is a little off on his knowledge. This was not the first black and gold paint scheme in production for the Trans Am. The Bicentennial edition Trans Am made in 1976 was also this same black and gold paint scheme except it had the bigger honeycomb wheels and the round headlights. I wish I had kept that car.
He says the black and gold paint scheme was new for a production Trans Am. *Incorrect*. Pontiac released the special edition Trans Am (black with gold accents) for the 1976 model year. For 1977 they changed the rims from honeycomb to snowflake, they redid the nose and the 455 was dropped leaving the 400 and 403 engines. Also he says that Smokey And The Bandit "started" the CB craze. This is also *incorrect*. The CB craze was born from two things: (1.) the fuel crisis of 1974 and (2.) the 55 mph national speed limit. Because then the CB was used to (1.) ask which gas stations were open and (2.) where the cops were running speed traps. The ONLY thing Smokey And The Bandit may have had a hand in as far as CB's go, is to help propel sales of the CB, even though it didn't need help; CB originally was 23 channels, but the "fad" that came from it due to the gas crisis and 55 speed limit, caused a massive use to where the radio was jammed with users; thus on Jan 1 1977, the FCC allowed for an extra 17 channels to be added, making 40 channels total. Smokey And The Bandit came out around May of 1977.
David Welsh In 77, Pontiac offered 3 engines. A 403/185 for the enviro wackos in California, a 6.6 Liter/400/180 hp and the T/A 6.6/400/200hp in 77 that went to 220 hp in 78. These 400 would romp the 76 455’s. I bought a new 78 TA 6.6 in Oct. 77 and it tore the Z’s and 76 455 a new butt hole.
@@melrose9252 The cars engines were assembled by hand so there were differences on each one if they were stock. just because you beat one 455 doesn't mean you would beat all 455s or 350s for that matter as they were all the same block the bore was different on the Pontiac, for instance after being around over 40+ 2 gen birds the fastest birds were a 70 formula 400 4speed a 75 formula 350. Slowest 2nd gen 78 marti blue with 400. So it depends on who put it together.. If you wanted power on them you removed the cat, headers and ran duals all the way back with straights or your choice of mufflers ( turbos were popular back in the day) ported the heads, changed the carb, for an edelbrock usually, sanded the block to make it smooth where the heads went on, put on an aluminum intake, and changed the cam. Simple improvements on those cars and you would notice power boost with the pushing well over 300hp.
It did help the sales of the Trans Am I remember even my uncle went out and bought a brand new 1977 black Trans Am then he wrecked it a month later around a telephone pole.
I had a new 1978 Gold S/E and it was great for a 16 yr old, but cars have come a long way from that. I have no desire to drive those anymore. It had awful brakes and no wet road traction. The T-tops leaked. the electrical system was awful, but it was beautiful 40 years later and classmates still remember that car.
I had a 1980 trans am wasn't a well conditioned car, motor going bad because it had a 301,yes a 301.Should have been illegal to put shitty motors in cars like that, but the chicks were mesmerized by it.That's the only good thing i remember about it
Ben Santiago back in 1980 the feds were wanting cleaner burning engines. gm had a problem with the 400 and 403 engines burning too much fuel because yu just can't make a bigger engine burn clean, not back then anyways. So gm killed off anything bigger than 350. that's why if you've ever noticed Chevy didn't even make a 454 from 1980-82. they brought it back in 82 as a heavy duty engine for busses and such. the 350 was considered top engine and was reserved for Corvettes and such. Pontiac only had one engine left of their own, the 301. And they tried to turbocharge it bit that did not help as much as they hoped. in the end the 301 left by 1982 and the 305 Chevy became the new top performer for the Trans Am.
1977 TA was great. All Year One had to do was modernize the drive train and suspension/brakes and leave the rest original. Basically a resto mod car. Old and young could enjoy it.
If you looked around. You could find the ones with the Oldsmobile big block in them. These were monsters torque automatics. Year One knows what there doing as well. You try and find a subframe that hasn't spread apart. Bushings wore out and crappy suspension that would rattle your teeth out. Also the doors were so heavy. They would eat the hinges up.
My black Mustang T-top had the same problem, every time it rained it leaked, even though the dealer replaced the seal, but like the Trans AM, it looked fantastic with red wheels!
I had a 78' Silver Anniversary model i just fell in love with the red interior and the silver with the Big Bird on the hood, It just didn't get better than that, was very hot and fast car that had control like a freaking plain

David Welsh Right on!
He makes up stuff.
I'd just put the modern engine, trans, steering, tires, and suspension on the old car and leave the rest of it alone.
this is what they should have built under the classic body of a 77 Bandit Trans Am !

Keep it all Pontiac....no need for another damn Ls Swapped car
I had a new 1978 Gold S/E and it was great for a 16 yr old, but cars have come a long way from that. I have no desire to drive those anymore. It had awful brakes and no wet road traction. The T-tops leaked. the electrical system was awful, but it was beautiful
40 years later and classmates still remember that car.
oohhh...that Burt Reynolds edition is FIRE..The original Bandit car model mint would be amazing to have.
The TA is one Badass car... I had 79 TA ... Loved it loved it loved it...
Ben i always said what the hell were they thinking.
1977 TA was great. All Year One had to do was modernize the drive train and suspension/brakes and leave the rest original. Basically a resto mod car. Old and young could enjoy it.
RIP BANDIT please guys dont forget to watch "The last MovieSTAR" with of corse Burt Reynolds Ed.
he really drove that sharpie bit into the ground
Great job Stacey David I love your show!!😉😎
If you looked around.
The 403 Olds powered T/As were really dogs compared to the Pontiac 400s especially the 78 220 hp TA 6.6.
RIP Bandit Darville.
I love the new 2016 Bandit Trans-Am. .. they really did a great job on that.
THAT POINTER ARROW... ufff!
RIP Bandit you will be missed!
bought my 1977 trans am in April of this year cherry red t tops it's bad ass
Oooh Nice my friend. I have a 80 model
I MISS YOU SALLY ...BANDIT
My black Mustang T-top had the same problem, every time it rained it leaked, even though the dealer replaced the seal, but like the Trans AM, it looked fantastic with red wheels!
I had a 78' Silver Anniversary model i just fell in love with the red interior and the silver with the Big Bird on the hood, It just didn't get better than that, was very hot and fast car that had control like a freaking plain
I had an 81 Pontiac firebird. Black. My favorite car I ever had
