    This is one of the best dog/human trainers I have ever watched. He makes it so simple and now I recognize that all the issues we have had (some continue) are a result of MY mistakes. Every mistake I made have come from my lack of understanding the “mixed messages” I am giving Kiah. No wonder why I have been so frustrated at times and even wanting to give up. I kept thinking “she is just never going to get it”. Utilizing Roberts videos, I have made huge progress with Kiah and she is a far less confused Lab/Chow mix. What I have learned is that you can correct the past mistakes and have a wonderful, happy dog. It WILL require a lot of patience. And you must be willing to watch Roberts videos and learn.
    Thank you Robert for everything you have taught me. Kiah thanks you too🐕🐕

    Ahhh... this is why my 11 wk. old drops the ball before she gets to me me when teaching her fetch. Because "drop it".
    I've since seen your advice to "tug" or have another ball during fetch. Genius! Thank you, sir.

    This is something that I teach my clients. Almost all of them previously used "Come" "Sit" and their recall was none existent.
    I work similar to you but I am still learning. You are an inspiration as well as a great educator.
    Thank you for your time.

    I instruct dogtrainers to use the recall command as most important command. What recall in my opinion is, is that the dog has to come to you when called and you must be able to touch the collar of the dog and that is all there is to it. It doesn't matter what the dog is doing when you touch the collar or how far he is from you. This prevents the thing happening what Robert is talking about.
    -
    The recall command is used in obedience to let the dog come to you as described above, but other commands are also used to let the dog come to you when he is far away from you. For instance the "heel" command means that the dog has to come to you and he must go sit in the basic heel position left from you. No matter how far the dog is from you. The same goes for other "position commands" you teach your dog.
    -
    Otherwise good work as always, Robert. 😀

    Wonderful tip. Being a newbie in dog training, I luckily never did this mistake-thank goodness! Instinctively, I let the puppy run towards me, let it continue running between my legs for a few steps. I want the dog to run in recall as if its life depended on it, to come behind me and feel protected by me (as his pack leader).

    Sweet I did not make either one of these mistakes. I already do the 2nd part. How ever I do my COME teaching a bit different, but I like your way better. I do not need someone to help me your way. I basically play dog ping pong lol. We both have treats and take turns calling the dog. My Ruby pretty solid on recall but I think your method will make her even better. I dont know If i wanna throw a treat between my legs when teaching a Great Dane though lol. I think I will just throw at my feet for that one, I dont wanna talk soprano for a few hours lol. I hope that works almost as good.

    i have a 13 month old, 105 pound german shepherd that i got when he was 10 months old - his previous owners did not work with him AT ALL besides "sit, lay down, paw" and now I have this super hyper, super big dog that's difficult to work with because he's constantly so high strung and uses his weight/size to get the best of me. The main problem I have is that he refuses to let me get close while he has a toy, so it's difficult to actually get anything out of him with toys, even though he's clearly pretty toy motivated. general obedience isn't too bad usually, but because i can't get the toys back i have to use food, and almost every distraction he can see is more interesting to him than the food. Any advice?

    While I largely agree with your method of teaching recall, for those that compete in Obedience in venues such as AKC, UKC, etc. an auto-sit at the end of the recall is going to be necessary. Without question it can, and probably should be added after the dog understands the basic recall.

    • @shadygaming6523
      @shadygaming6523 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, that's during training and for the most of the other times, but occasionally it's okay to tell him to come after a sit, it's like the dog knows how to do both things , the dog still expects a command, either a yes for release or a come to come, he didn't build the dog to think that "after i sit and stay for a while he always calls me so i better go to him now" instead the dog doesn't know what the human wants from him after the sit.

    Great advice! I'll restart my dog using this..i do tend to make her stay i also taught her to sit or down after recall which i did not know was a big no no. I was a bit preplexed about something though,maybe a misread the situation..on a previous video you mentioned that when you say sit(which for your dog is a stay) you should never recall them to you until you give the go (which in your case looked to be a touch and yes) but in this video you recalled her from a sit.
    My dog knows basics like stay,and wait and stay etc..(not perfect but still hoping and trying to improve),might be a bit harder as she is already 1.5 years old.
    Can i for example tell her to lay down and say stay and then go back to her say Go...should i avoid calling her from a wait rather than a stay? and only use stay to mean that shes only allowed to freely move when i go to her and say the word "go" ?"Yes" to be much friendlier but i do tend to use the yes but still want her to stay still and i dont her to get mixed up that yes is the free word.
    Excuse my english, i hope you understand where im trying to get.

    • @RobertCabralDogs
      @RobertCabralDogs  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      great question. the idea to this lesson is to simply teach the dog NOT to auto release or auto recall. Once the dog understands, its obviously ok to recall the dog from the stay - as I do. However I urge people not to recall the dog out of stay too often.... it builds the bad habit we are trying to avoid.

    Great video, one question: when you collar your dog to go home from the park or woods, he'll also first have to come to you. This means for the dog "end of playtime". How can you make sure your dog will still come to you if he expects that?

  • @tierracid3212
    @tierracid3212 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Uggh. So how do I reverse this? There is one area in my home that my dog NEVER comes all the way because a few times I called him to that area it was to tell him not to eat out of that trash can in that bathroom. Local trainer said to go around house and show him things not to touch. (Initially then occasionally as reminder) How to rebuild trust? Do more positive recalls? Then maybe work to trying recall in that area of home?
    Also would love a video on general alarm/protective barking. Can you teach your dog to bark? My dog has barked when people are on my property and does not play well with other cats or dogs. But I have not figured out how keen he is on ALL strangers. How do I figure out when to trust his bark/train his bark. He went from barking at the deer in the yard to nothing now. Yes, because when it was deer, our response was more of a “thanks but no thanks” unfortunately.

      Just increase the longevity every time and slowly increase the time required for it to wait before reward etc. Take it slow and increase time over weeks if that helps.

    Hi Robert your the best, i seen you video at the horse ranch, trying to teach my dog to come and down while headed toward me in motion like goofy did, in what order should this be tough, he learn to complete the come command, He already knows down but when i say come, I follow it with down as he is on his way to me,but he wont go down till he gets about 3 feet from me not like on command as he is in motion . so in other words he wont go down while on his way. Help please Tony

    What treats do you recommend for a 5 month old malinois? Mine gets his treat so desperate that he chokes. I am using zukki treats that are somehow chewy (not soft not crunchy). I use sometimes small pieces of hot dogs and sometimes his own food and either way he is always desperate to eat whatever is in my hands.

    What breed is Goofy? I have an almost identical dog with just slightly less black on the front. She's supposed to be German Shepherd but I can find no references to blonde being a recognized GSD color. Do you know Goofy's lineage?

    What do u do if he is coming towards u (in a hurry since u did recall (come) him) but all of a sudden u need to go platz immediately?(some danger to him if he keeps coming to you)..
    Is this addressed somewhere?
    Thanks.. say hi to.Goofy for me!!

    Another thing I'm trying to do is recall him and he must go behind me /bridge between my legs and sit or platz..good or bad???

      Should this "action" therefore be a different command to "come/bridge/ sit or platz that I'm doing now.... sorry for all these questions..

    DOG INSURANCE: WORTH IT OR NOT? AS A PUPPY? WHAT AGE SHOULD I GET IT?

      I'm give my opinion here ... based on my personal experience, dog insurance is invaluable. My German Shepherd nearly died on holidays from contracting hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. He had to have blood transfusions and a week in hospital, with a follow-up of around 5 different medications a day for three weeks. The total bill came to $4,000 (Australian dollars). The insurance I bought was the most comprehensive I could get. Yes, it was a bit more expensive, but I was so glad I had it, as they covered the total bill. Not only that, but I submitted the claim on a Friday afternoon and they paid it in full by the following Monday. The following year I was dreading the premium, but it didn't go up much at all. So yes, I would definitely consider insurance. I got insurance for my boy when he was eligible at 12 weeks old. Hope that helps.

      Like any insurance, it's not worth it until you need it, then you'll thank yourself for having it. I've saved thousands because all my dogs are fully insured.
