  • Teach your dog Sit on command is one of the very most basic things we teach our dogs. As we know all dogs will sit at one point or another, the issue becomes getting our dogs to sit when we ask them to. This is the core of dog obedience training and I cover this in this video.

Be sure to look for part 2 of this video coming next week.
This video covers the basic concept of SIT and also the elements of using sit in competitive dog sports and obedience such as AKC, IPO and ring sports.
Getting your dog to understand the finer points of the obedience is covered as well as the difference between a tuck sit and a roll sit. This training video will give you all of the information to get your dog to understand sit clearly, do it effectively and to make it THE PERFECT SIT!

Exactly. I love how the dog is active and wagging his tail throughout the video. So many other training videos have dogs who behave like robots and don't seem to be having any fun at all. It's much more encouraging to see that it can be obedient and lively at the same time!

I agree with you that this works with most dogs. When I got my first dog, this is what dog school and training had told me to do. And I practiced it on many dogs before where it worked.
Then there came my current dog.
I have to say in advance that she is a fearful dog and I don't "need" a sit command in her. She knows "wait", "go", "no" and "come" and with these four (necessary) commands I can jungle her safe in the average urban traffic of a small town.
But as I enjoy dog training, she enjoys it too and I like the challenge of working with fearful dogs, I every now and then try to sprinkle in some sit training approaches. And man can I tell you, that does not work with this dog.
When I put treats over her head, she always goes backwards, she never has lowered her back. Even gently laying my hand on her back (as shown to me in dog training sessions) while hovering the treat above her head, doesn't make her lower her back. She is stiff as a plank.
When I show her a treat and wait for her to offer me some behaviour (and man, I try this with this dog for two years now), there simply happens nothing. There were so many occasions now, I stood there for literally half an hour (I took the time) with the treat in my hand waiting for her to do anything (and if anybody had watched me during that time, he might have thought I had gone crazy), and she literally stood there for half an hour looking at me and doing nothing.
As she is very old and has arthitis, she usually, after short periods of standing, sits and lays down, for example when she's with me in the kitchen while I'm cooking.
But when I stand there with a treat, she simply won't.
As I said, teaching her the sit command isn't a main goal with her, as I focus on getting her comfortable with her daily routine, cars, other people, other dogs, driving inside a car, going to the vet, etc. She isn't still comfortable with me handling her sometimes. She maybe never will, as she was very traumatized when she came here.
But it would be interesting to know how to approach training with a dog like mine that doesn't offer behaviour and is in general fearful.

You put out the best dog training vids on TH-cam IMO. My wife and I are currently working with a trainer on basic obedience with our newly acquired 1.5 yr. old Pitty/Bulldog mix. It's doubtful she'll ever be as accomplished as Goofey bit that won't stop me from trying. Why not, it's great fun for all of us and she's a fast learner.

Howdy, Robert. Thanks for all these videos and effort and real consideration for the relationship between an owner and their dog. Listen, I know you talk a lot of shit about huskies ;) and that they are (your words) "dumb", and that you'd never train one "on a bet" (and no I don't take any of that personally or think that you have any ill will towards them. They are HARD to work with), but I have to tell you, with a serious amount of extra effort and following your guidelines and recommendations here, my huskies are REALLY showing behaviors I'd never really reached with the huskies I'd had before. Just wanted to post this as a lighthearted response and encouragement as well as a "thanks" from me and my two companions. I tell all of my dog owner friends about you and your channel. Have a GREAT 2020, sir.

@@RobertCabralDogs HAH! That's spot on! Very well put. I'm gonna have to pass that analogy on to my fiancee (the huskies are ours together). I bet she shoots coffee out of her nose. Thanks for responding. It's been an absolute joy following you here and on your other SM locations. I recommend you to everyone I know that's got a dog in their lives.
