  • In this video, I share how to choose between mittens and gloves for cold weather. Each has its advantages and disadvantages and I share what I do in cold conditions. I also share my secret tools for making my gloves work in much colder temperatures than they should be used at. I have used this technique many times with great success.

    Great info as always! I suffer from Renauds Syndrome so I have been dealing with cold fingers for a long time. I took your advice and purchased the OR mitts and haven't suffered since. Another convertible glove/mitten I found amazing is by Simms for fly fishing made with new style Polartech and keep warm when wet as well. Cheers

    Great video. I also found removable mitten and glove liners good as you can dry them more easily if they get wet.
    Also with convertible mitten/glove where you peel the mitten piece back they secure that piece with velcro, snaps or magnet. Avoid the magnet if doing compass work. Was on a SAR exercise and one team member had a compass that was way off and it took everyone a bit until they realized there was a magnet in the glove/mitten.

    • @ALinsdau
      @ALinsdau  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The magnet thing is a kicker for sure.

    It's funny what a little bit of knowledge & science can do for you. I've been out in winter maneuvers, cursed with poor circulation in my hands & feet. Issued old crappy gear & suffered for it. Wish my units institutional practical knowledge had included your slight overheating capillary opening trick.

    There are some mittens out there that have a watertight zippered access on the glove that allows you to pull the glove back and expose you hand on the inside. This works great because you can still wear a liner glove and do not have to take the gloves on and off is you are all bundles up.

    • @ALinsdau
      @ALinsdau  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The hatch style mittens are pretty nifty for sure.

    Nice info! What's your thoughts on latex gloves as a vbl?

    • @ALinsdau
      @ALinsdau  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Latex gloves as a VBL are too sweaty for me. I'll end up with cold wet hands. YMMV.

    Hello Aaron, I'm currently searching for the best winter coat available and i was wondering if Canadian Goose was a good brand for ultimate winter resitance, thanks in advance and great video!

    • @ALinsdau
      @ALinsdau  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Canada Goose makes very good jackets. They're quite heavy, so it's a tradeoff.

  • @TrekStar30

    It looks like you are wearing the Eddie Bauer Peak XV jacket. How do you like that and is it warm enough for Aconcagua? I was leaning towards the Peak XV but they have come out with the DownClime Alpine Parker which has two way zippers and some other advantages. Any thoughts on that one?

    • @ALinsdau
      @ALinsdau  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have found the Peak XV plenty warm. I avoid the 2way zippers but that's just me. Not sure on the new jacket. Best of luck and be safe!

    Awesome video!
    If I understand the science correctly, your body takes blood flow away from your extremities (like your toes and hands) when your core is cold.
    In your video, you talk about your "most powerful hat in the universe" (lol) to over warm other parts of your body so your fingers get continued circulation (and avoid the body's natural response of taking away circulation).
    Would the same strategy work for, say, wearing an extra upper layer, to keep your core slightly warmer, to keep good circulation in your fingers?

    • @ALinsdau
      @ALinsdau  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it works, but don't cheat by going too light.

    Thoughts on sizing for gloves and mittens? I’m at the bottom of the large range but find that mediums offer more dexterity despite being a little tight

    • @ALinsdau
      @ALinsdau  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I find tight gloves make my hands cold. I rely on liners to take care of dexterity and go one size up for warmth.

    I purchased the black diamond mercury mitts with the lobster claw insert. I see you put your whole fist sometimes in your mitt. I can take my index finger out and combine with the others.
    Do you think that's to much room in the mitten? I've always worn 5 finger gloves.
    Thanks

      I've pulled my hands into a ball in gloves and mittens. I like having space without being crazy overszied.
