I just bought a pair of these from our local outdoor store here in New Zealand. They were on special here in NZ for NZD $209. they're a great glove love them . Just what i need for my Alaska trip in Jan / Feb 2025. The only issue i had was the sales team instore had no idea about the spec's or benefits of these gloves. it was due to your review that i had all the details i needed. Thank you.

I still have my Outdoor Research Mittens from 25 years ago! They are pretty worn out now, and I use them as a back up. Just shows you the tech they put into their gloves. Nice vid!
Great review. I'm planning on doing some winter camping in the interior of BC in Jan/Feb and my hands are generally cold, not very good circulation so these gloves and liners look like the way to go.
I have these mitts and actually used them as paddling gloves on my October Bowron canoe circuit trip.I was in 6 down to minus 12C for 7 days and these mitss never allowed my hands to get cold or wet in spite of paddling solo in my pack raft. These are awesome.
Very similar to some of the offerings from Hestra. I find removable inner mitts to be invaluable on multi-day excursions as I can take them out and dry them in the evenings, preventing sweat from turning into ice
I found these Hestra Mittens: amzn.to/2KtZPuR They don’t look like they have cuffs as long. I wonder how they perform. Good stuff always fun to learn about different products.
@@ALinsdau Personally I combine the pullover mitt ( hestragloves.com/sport/en/gloves/outdoor/35111-pull-over-mitt/250440/ ) with the Primaloft liner ( hestragloves.com/sport/en/gloves/liners/34161-primaloft-extreme-liner/100/ ). This is very warm but does not offer the best grip on ski poles and such, so when it is not very cold I use a ski glove ( hestragloves.com/sport/en/gloves/alpine-pro/30590-army-leather-patrol/280/ ) under the pull over mitt. I always wear a thin merino wool liner glove under all that. In general Hestra make gloves for Scandinavian conditions but they do make a mitt specifically for the Polar regions ( hestragloves.com/sport/en/gloves/outdoor/35051-sirius-polar-mitt/300100/ )

Have you had any experience with the hestra mitts? I'm trying to decide which one to buy and which one is the better mitt
I looked over the Hestra mitts at the local store. They look pretty nice but they didn’t seem to have as long a gauntlet cover for the wrist and I do t think I saw idiot cords. They’re quite important in stormy conditions. I don’t have a way to test the Hestras at -40deg, so I can’t say on that. If they’re similar to my BD mitts, those were only good to -20deg F.

I have actually had some really great pairs with several hundred grams of insulation and get stolen while drying. I was considering these but weighing them against ones made in Fairbanks by Apocolypse Wear and ones by Steger - musher worthy as well. I had frostbite before after losing consciousness due to hypoxia due to altitude sickness. Now my fingers turn purple very quickly. I have had some good OR products that have been stuffed with down. I wore wool liners in them that were made by someone else. I am going to order Alti Mitts. Thanks!
Hey. I would have guessed that down mittens would absorb moisture over time which would make them less useful and this would occur much quicker than a sleeping bag looses lol from moisture. Is that not really a problem? Cheers
Aaron, Did you have chance to compare Alti mittens with Outdoor Research High Camp Mittens. The price is of half of Alti and seems like many features are same but what difference should be expected beside insulation ?
I do prefer them to the BD equivalent. I've had the BD gloves and they didn't work as well for me. If yo want incredible mittens, these are hard to beat for a ski trip. They were so warm I had a bit of sweat each day near the South Pole which was really cold.
I got these mitts to keep me warm bike commuting even when the temp goes below -30 here in Edmonton, Canada. They are great mitts but I've noticed that two factors seem to be decreasing their warmth. First of all if they are damp at all that significantly decreases the warmth so I've been making sure to dry them out between uses. Secondly they seem to be getting less warm as I use them (I've been using them daily for about 3 months now). I think this is because the insulation is getting compressed down with use and possibly with oil and dirt from my hands. I'm wondering what is the best way to clean them and restore their warmth. Any advice? Also just another comment I love how modular they are, I sometimes use just the outer shell or just the inner liner for warmer conditions, or I take the liner out or put it back in during my commute as needed to keep my hands warm without getting sweaty.
Definitely wash them regularly. Take out the inner mitten, turn it inside out, and send it through with regular detergent on a gentle wash. I haven't recked mine yet!

Great review as always! I’m torn between the gloves and mitts. You didn’t seem as enthusiastic about the gloves. How cold would you rate the gloves? I’ll probably never see sustained -40°, but I am in Alaska (Anchorage area mostly and might do some casual non-summit Denali trips), so it’s possible...
The mittens are the ultimate. My fingers sweated at the South Pole in overcast, -40 deg C/F temps, with 30MPH winds. The gloves are great but they are tougher to flex. However, I go with gloves whenever possible for dexterity.
For me, they're too much glove for Kilimanjaro. That would've been a sweat fest. If it's stormy or you're sensitive to cold, they'd be a good choice on Aconcagua.
They're the mittens most everyone uses on Denali and Everest. I used them at the South Pole and they worked great. If you can spring for electric heated gloves, that's always nice.
I see some companies selling big lofty down mittens that look super warm but wouldn't down gloves loose loft just from regular hand moisure quicker than down sleeping bags would? I don't know but it seems like it'd be a problem. Eddie bauer used to sell some badass down mittens that tneir climbers used to climb everest...but then again climbing everest only takes a few days. What you do in Antarctica is weeks to months so the problem has time to show itself

Yes, I wear them loose so I can ball my hands up if it gets too cold.

Yes but that's me. I've staked my life on Outdoor research stuff and thus far I'm free of finger frostbite.

For me, they're too much glove for Kilimanjaro. That would've been a sweat fest. If it's stormy or you're sensitive to cold, they'd be a good choice on Aconcagua.
