I boil in a down jacket so it's becoming clear I need a base layer and maybe one more with a rain/snow shell over that to get me around on short hikes to photograph the scenery there before deep winter sets in. Good basic layering advice. My thought on cold weather travel is Dress like an Eskimo. The enemies of work load in extreme cold is moisture build up. And not getting enough heat to the extremities. Rule number one is never uncover the head. The blood flow to the brain has to be conserved at all cost. Your figures are the radiators of the human body, not the head. or the core. Your base layer should have a hood and thumb hole at the end of the sleeve. A stocking hat lost in the wind is not an option. When taking off a layer or adding a layer the head and neck remained covered. The length of the garment covers the butt and prevents cooling of the vital organs. It is never tucked in to the belt line. Heat rises to the top of the garment and the moisture is expelled at the bottom. Gloves are either clipped to the end of the outer garment or a cord runs between the two gloves. I have a collection of clothing running back to the late 60's. Good equipment lasts for ever, with a patch here and there. My really cold weather vest is a over the butt down jacket that I removed the sleeves. It has vertical panels over stuffed with down making it crush proof. With a wind proof jacket over the vest I bicycled 10 miles to work in the wind on zero F days with a wool sweater as mid layer. My wool mid layer is a tight weave loose fit wool shirt with a removable hood that covers my butt and designed to be untucked with tight fitting cuffs. The neck has a 1/4 length opening secured with one button the size of a quarter that is. easy to vent with gloves on. Other variations include a wind shirt with hood. My down parka has a removable hood. My emergency light weight down jacket has a hood. I use an old English method to make wool repel water. You can find the method on You Tub . (A basin of water, ivory soap or woolite and lanolin ) A fur ruff ion the parka and wind jackets s a must in wind and cold. I used to buy them at used clothing stores when women still wore wool coats with animal fur collars, Not so easy to find today. At 80 I have had to slow down a little, too many replaced parts. You young people get out and enjoy the real world and keep it from turning into a four lane high way.

I still have Eddie Bauer down sleeping bags from the late 60 in my inventory. Two I modified with a zipper that runs the side and across the bottom so that it can be a quilt or a sleeping bag.
I agree about the storm flaps over zippers. This recent craze to go super light & streamlined means that I'm often trapped in my outerwear as the zippers are all covered in rime ice & won't budge (mind you all my pack straps are frozen solid as well so I can't even get my pack off my back).

Often times I'm using Eddie Bauer guide pants. They have worked well for a long time. For Denali, etc., I use Icebreaker long underwear and then a shell pant from Montbell. Polartec Neoshell fabric breathes even slightly better than E-vent.
Gore-Tex is so 1980's, when they were the pioneer of waterproof breathable membranes! 😉

So true, both my son and I have destroyed Gortex jackets in 33F rainstorms producing too much body heat.

I completely agree about full front zippers and vests.
I cannot find a (lightweight) alpha direct jacket with a full zip at any price.
(The few that do have zippers are made from 180gms AD, so much heavier than 60 or 90gsm.)
Wish we could still get eVent stuff.
eVent is harder to find - I heard 2nd hand Gortex is pressuring or vendors not to carry eVent. I much prefer eVent to Gortex.

Aaron, I believe one of the reasons that Ice Breaker is expensive, is that they pre-shrink their wool so that you can wash it with your other laundry instead of a designated wool wash. In order to have the garments true to size they manufacture them oversize and then shrink them. More wool == higher price.

most of the new wool garments are treated with a chemical , just like the water proof chem put on down.

I prefer hardshell - softshell is nice but once it's wet, drying is an issue.

Nice versitile budget list but Canadian Mission Jacket beats all of these for extreme jackets, correct me if you know of a more extreme temp rating.
If you do not have a higher Denier rating if you go anywhere with evergreens they would shred those "sleeping bag jackets"

Other outdoor gear reviewers forget to warn their audience about the half-way zippers (or even worse - no zippers). If you must prevent overheating and releasy excess body moisture quickly - full zippers are the best (at least 3 times as efficient as half-way zippers). Active hikers, skiers etc. feel too cold at one moment and too hot just a few minutes later. People overestimate their readiness to put on and take off a layer before they are already sweating or hypothermic. They are typically too lazy to do it on time or don't have time (because their group is moving forward quickly and nobody wants to stay behind).

Correct - the down parka is way too hot while towing.
