    May be a old Ford truck , however, it's still on the road compared to many of the 5 year old junks they make today.

      I have a 97 f150, would it be a terrible idea to buy a 2014ish model? I'm more of a toyota person so a tundra would be the smarter choice, I just love ford trucks for some reason.

      I traded in my 95 F150 that had a straight 6 300 when it had 383,000 miles on it for my 03 F150 off the show room floor. The 03 currently has over 295,000 miles on it.

      @@blmdh20s damn. You put them through the ringer for sure. I am on my second f150, a 93 xl 4x4. My brother has a 98 4x4 and we shared a 01 xl work truck and they all have been great. I'd still have the 01 if the trans didn't die on top of having 300,000 miles and was beat tf up

      lexustech48 the grill paint isn’t factory, I think it’s probably repainted, I don’t recall ever seeing one in that color, and it doesn’t look like a factory paint job under the hood.

      I don't think any intake (upper) plenums were factory painted on the trucks. They were always the natural color from casting.

      @@eizzle78 Blah Blah Blah. It was a necessary evil. We've got 400hp 4 cylinder engines now. 800hp 8 cylinders. Yeah, the malaise era was rough, but don't be so myopic. We came out very much better for it.

    This guy is extremely patient and eager to complete a repair. He gets a thrill from it. I wish I had his confidence. I get too aggravated at these electronic controlled vehicles.

      The electronics just moniter the systems. So the mechanical is most important but the electronics play a part. 😂

    Love these Ford trucks from the late 80s and early 90s. Those 302 and 351 motors were strong as hell and almost impossible to blow up. Easy to work on, rarely had problems. Sure, you might have to replace the TFI module or a MAP sensor once in a while, but compared to today's cars I would much rather have one of these older "square body" trucks

    I wish I saw this video 2 years ago! My 1993 f150 4.9L has been sitting for about that long due to ALL the symptoms you metioned in this video. Mainly the transmission hard shifting, late shifing and early shifting. I have changed the transmission 2 times, checked all the wires for continuity, changed speed sensor, tps AND an ECU , even a solenoid in the dash panel! I have just purchased the MAP sensor this evening and I'll change it out in the morning and give you an update.🤞😬

    Wanted to thank you guys since my mechanic spent a couple hours labor on my 92 with no results. $20.00 part just installed myself in under 3 minutes. Didn't bother un bolting old one just zip tied to it! Runs way way better. Starts without using gas pedal anymore. So grateful

      There aren't many shops that find truly being a mechanic worthwhile anymore. If the car doesn't scream exactly what it is, they'd rather send it elsewhere and get on with their oil changes than take the time to truly diagnose it.

      FordTechMakuloco Too bad you never had the opportunity to work with an SBDS diagnostic machine, it was a great tool once you got used to it and very advanced for its time. It was capable of a lot of in depth testing and scope work, the guys who understood electrical could work magic with it, although honestly most guys wouldn't take the time.

      I don't consider being older just more experienced on older vehicles. 30-60's were before my time but I can work on them all...more experienced than the younger whipper snappers :D

      James Zivny We still had one at he dealer I worked at but it was buried in the back of the tool shed so I never got around to pulling it out. I did look it over and it was an amazing piece of equipment that's for sure. Of course our was like new.

      South Main Auto Repair Well I started at the Ford Dealer in 2005 so these weren't an everyday occurrence. We did see more of them than you would think at a dealer though. I've have had my fair share of experience on these but nowhere near the amount of OBD II drivability I have done.

    You nailed it just based on the symptoms. Amazing how clean that old truck was even on the inside compared to the some of the newere vehicles you worked on that weren't worth the cost of repair. Then again, I'm a sucker for old cars and motorcycles, if they could talk I bet they'd have some stories to tell.

      Odd that Ford oriented the seam straight up on that little box. Needs a little tin or plastic deflector to serve as a rain gutter.

      Wonder if the Motorcraft version had the same seam. Sometimes aftermarket is a little different, and Mr. O did say it was identical to what he got.

    Nice job. Here's another water issue you may have run into. Bought a 92 F150 for hauling firewood. And after a while became aware of a potential electrical issue when I noticed that when the headlights were on cruise would not work. Became more greatly aware of a probable issue when I turned the left turn signal on and started a left turn but the vehicle behind me proceeded to pass on that side. WTH?
    Checked the rear turn signals and when the headlights were off the rear turn signals worked fine but when the headlights were on they did not at all. Front worked fine either way. My immediate response was to install an independent rear turn signal system complete with separate lights. And to check good old TH-cam for insight.
    Turns out that when there is a water leak in the windshield on these vehicles the water drains under the dash and ends of up in an electrical junction box of some kind. Tested and discovered, yes indeed, the windshield was leaking. Fixed that with silicone and no problems afterward.

    Seriously good work. I worked on too many FORD quirks with my dad as a kid to feel the same love for them that some here do. There is simply no justification for placing a water sensitive component where they put it without any protection.

    Great information for a lot of Ford owners. Eric is a very talented mechanic. Thanks for these highly educational videos. I have never met a mechanic in our area with his skill level. Even going to the dealership here usually requires at least three trips to get a repair completed.

    Nice diagnosis and solid fix. That hood seal is bent so if he changes it problem solve but you took care of the water intrusion...SORTED. Trucks in great shape.

    The EEC-IV was a pretty good and advanced system in its day. I applaud the fact that you went out of your way to seal the new MAP sensor for your customer however I was 'yelling at the screen' for you to install and test the sensor 'as is' first to be certain it worked prior to sealing it as once you modded it you would not be able to return it if it lived up to its name and was NG. Perhaps you did this off camera.

    Guess it's time for me to upgrade my trusty 18 year old Blue Point multimeter I got from my MMI days in Phoenix. Need that Hz function!!
    About 7 years ago, I wasn't really sure what the MAP sensor even did on my '86 Grand Marquis (same location as this one, except it's mounted flat against the firewall). Well, I gave myself a good lesson in that when I broke the plastic nipple off the bottom of the sensor while trying to remove the hose, lol. Car ran PIG RICH at idle - burning eyes, black smoke rich! What a mess. That was an AHA moment for me. This vid here was another AHA moment - frequency is very important!

    I know this is probably not covered in automotive manuals but the signal was at a constant "high." The signal is what is called modified from pulse. So a multi-meter will show it at the maximum voltage regardless of the frequency whether it is having problems or not. A scope will show no pulse width modulation though. This video is very informative.

    I am a 51 year in the trade truck mechanic almost a klutz with gasoline. I got a 1992 Ford 150 couple of years ago it has a 173 map fault code and a 162 02 fault I been messing with on and off for some time. I used this video for map , good data. Asked a Ford guy, said probably a vacuum issue. Had checked vacuum several times. Let things peculate in brain, problem worse first few miles, so I asked what would cause a intermittent vacuum issue. Answer was PCV valve, which was a Bingo.

    Always trust your gut. I do the same thing working in ems. If you have seen the exact same symptoms 1000 times before and your gut says this is what it is then there you go. Great job Eric.

      a voltmeter would cut it there as long as it has frequency measurements and you have a mityvac. Thats what i used on my '95

    Ah man, my first vehicle was a 1996 F-250 with a 351w and 4.10 in the rear. It was OBD 1 (yes, argued with every mechanic ever, it was OBD1!) with an E4OD. It was a fun and fast truck but would shift into gear brutally hard and only if you lifted the throttle a lil. The only code I could ever pull was a "Thermactor" code that was most likely due to the smog pump being disabled. I never did figure it out but it sure was fun racing guys in their newer trucks and beating all the way to 120kph (lol) before I run out of gear!

    it never seems to amaze me how many vehicles come into Eric O.'s shop from OTHER facilities that cant even diagnosis an OBD I truck? I own alot of pre 1996 cars because they are so much easier to work on with much fewer sensors. Less to break and easier to fix.

    Wow, I have a 93 F150 and it's known as "the rolling turd." The paint is all but gone on it (still runs great). That 92 looks amazing (though I suspect it was repainted).

    Just came across this video. With that many problems, and the age of these vehicles, the most likely culprit is the ecu capacitors have failed or are failing. There are usually three of them in there. Two 47uF/16volts and one 10uF/63volt. Until it is checked and repaired, you will be chasing problems and wasting money on parts that don’t need to be replaced. The caps are responsible for sending the various and correct reference voltages to the various sensors. When those voltages are low, which is what happens when the caps have failed, the transmission shifts hard and you get idle problems. Even if you don’t have those problems yet, and you have a thirty plus year old Ford with these V8 engines, make sure you get into the ecu and replace those caps. If you don’t, and those caps leak enough, your ecu will be damaged from the acid those things leak. The electrical traces get destroyed and you may not be able to repair the ecu if they are too bad to jump the circuit with wire.

      Speaking of lost tools, parts... Years ago ohauling the carb on an early Audi, lost one of the fuel check valve balls. Found it hours later...rolled down the driveway into the front yard grass!! Not long ago ohauling Mikuni motorycycle carb, the float bowl spring fell out, bounced off my right shoe. Spent hours scouring the floor, never found it, ordered one online. Two years later I found it. It bounced off of my shoe UP and INTO one of the locking dog holes in my big wood working bench!!!

    I also worked on a lot of those trucks. Oddly i don't remember replacing many MAP sensors. We used to stock TP sensors for them however. Repair well done, Eric.

      What are the symptoms of a bad tps? My 7.5 used to smoke the tires off now it won't even spin them on wet asphalt I'm about to carb swap this junk efi

    Great example of why you're paid for you experience. A shop was dumbfounded on an old truck and without even looking at it you had the answer, and this extremely valuable info is now free to the public

    I had a good one back in 2002. I owned a 1995 F150 Lightning that I shipped to the United Kingdom while I was stationed in England. I had the money light, OD flashing and it ran like shit. The idle was horrible but the shifts were fantastic (I'm a racer, so stiff shifts are fine). It ended up being the PCM. It took a while to diagnose because I was deployed a lot, but we finally figured it out. I did the swap myself so labor was 0. The part though, after shipping overseas was almost $500. That was a big deal back then.

    Eric thanks for another great video, if you stopped making them, don't think I would have you tube on. when I saw the new map sensor, I was saying to put some type of sealant on it. Keep up the good work and more shops will be bringing more of their unfixable problems, A big hello from Newfoundland, Canada.

      wyattoneable Don't ever feel like vehicles are too complicated or hi-tech to work on, get a Haynes book(or another) on computer controls and read, get a good multimeter and test light and check your own vehicle's parts and systems just to practice. Some tests require expensive scopes ect but most repairs can be done with a little patience, Google and assorted tools. Good luck

      James Zivny I hear you James. I'm a year into this hobby. I have Paul Danners book and read other references as well. TH-cam channels and books are great but until I get experience I will be unsure of myself. I don't want to fry computers! 😊

      James hits it right on, test known goods and learn from that. People make big mistakes trying to learn when it is all ready broke. That is harder to do IMO.

      I don't know. Is the customer aware that the original shop couldn't fix it and they sent it to SMA, or do they hide that fact, get the truck back, and pretend they fixed it???

      Don't know mate, but he's had quite a few customers come in from other shops
      who have failed to diagnose problems. I was assuming that they
      were 'old school' shop and didn't have the expertise to fix this particular issue but...
      this van is quite old and any competent shop should be able to fix the fault.
      (I have to admit I'm a bit of an Eric O fanboy...even though I'm 52!)

      Well old school shops in this state will burn out fast because this is about as old school as we get around here and these are far and few between. You either have to s&*t or get off the pot I always say haha. Try to stay current and educated or this business will swallow you whole.

    You nailed it. The hood seal is allowing water to drip on it. I silicone mine as well. I have learned the the oem part from ford works much better than what parts stores carry. Well done

    My old 86 Ford F-150 has the EEC-IV computer system but it's got a feed back carb when I bought it new I went ahead and ordered a shop manual for the 86 year model Fords I'm glad I did cause it help me understand that operating system. Great video as always 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

    Nice, experience has its assets and then the water in the map sensor was a bit of a clue as to what was wrong. Very nice touch sealing that to help give it a nice long life. Oh yeah, we're in NY, lol. Thanks for sharing.

You always teach me something! !Hi all just an FYI went thru a high idle issue on my 1999 ford f150---smoked it for vac leaks(yes, i made my own smoker lol) cleaned throttle body and Idle control valve--cleared computer and tried to let it find it's new base idle---no help--grrrr finally i remembered to clean (I mean really clean!!) the pcv valve--Freaking truck calmed down and is purring like a kitty!! PCV valve was sticking!! Hope this helps all!!

    I love the old High Boys with manual 4WD interaction. Those were a no non sense work truck that rarely failed to deliver. I had a 92 Bronco ...loved that ride.

    My 1996 F150 5.0 is my most reliable vehicle in my driveway. All original. Other vehicles in our driveway, 2011 Caravan and a 2013 Edge. Constantly dealing with issues. Doesn't have all the crap sensors and extras which need to be fixed constantly. I know, I fix cars for others and the most repairs are for all those extra sensors and electronics. Great diagnostics.

    It seems pretty obvious this was a "technician induced problem" as that MAP sensor was designed to be mounted with the open side facing down- not as it was found. Adding silicone will not get rid of condensation- and indeed may trap it. The sensor was intended to drain mounted with the removed cover facing the ground.

    You can tell by the tabs that the Map is mounted upside down that's why the water got in.

    What about the harsh drive engagement?
    Side note: I probably painted at least 20 of those trucks back in the day. Majority of them could be stripped with nothing more than a razor blade. Paint would come off in sheets.

    Fomoco always had a way to insure job security for the independent shops. Mounting relays and sensors upside down so they gather as much moisture as possible. I alway kept a known good MAP and a few relays in my diag. drawer. Customers love when you can fix what seem like big issues in minutes. I probably made more in cash tips replacing those MAP sensors than I did book time on the invoice.
