Coming along nicely, getting the main dimensions properly sorted now will pay you back later with less fettling of the bodykit and alteration of the lines. Love the plan to put the rollgage inside the pillars like the original 6R4 too, in reality, you need all the room you can get and it's no bad thing to use the same solution.
Yes, I don’t think I’m too far away now. Maybe up/down at the back or front, I don’t think il bring it any further forwards, it’s starting to get more complicated the further I go
When I built my replica I fibre glassed the tailgate skin onto the original steel tailgate, worked perfectly. Had to adapt the door light recess's slightly and welded and welded some sheet metal onto the bottom of the door for added strength behind the number plate section.
Excellent, I think I have my tailgate from the same place as yours, so at least I know that will work. Although I do have the later tailgate to start with
I'm extremely impressed with your vision and ability to see where you can cut to make this feasible. And also nothing seems to phase you, good luck with it🤞
Great job following with interest, Since I first saw a 6r4 in Cirencester Park on RAC rally in 85 or 86 can’t remember which ,But it’s allways been my dream car despite mates saying 6r4 was shit I’ve loved it and still do, But now at 60 I think I’m going to miss out owning one,Never the less keep up the great work.
Really appreciating all your hard work here. The metro was one of my favourite crazy rally rocket ships. I think once your done itll be more solid than the original 6R4 was. Great work...
Yes, really the only addition Rover made to the cars was a length of box section either side of the transmission tunnel ((and around the engine) and a roll cage. So using that as a baseline, this should be plenty strong enough
Hi. Great to see another northern Ireland car nut! Lol I done something similar a few years ago, dropping a puma body over a shortened sierra xr4x4 floorpan. Worked out really well. Love the petro! I did notice something about the a piller/door ideas. If you move the hindge point towards the centre of the door, that will mean the door skin has to clear further into the a pillers when the door opens. If it was my project, i would keep the doors standard and modify the piller/sill areas to suit. You have to do this anyway so why make more work for yourself. Plus, if you are going to fit a 35mm cage and hide it in the a piller/roof pillers, that will put plenty of strength back into the pillers. Looking forward to the next video.
There is a box section with boron steel in it behind the pillar, if I cut it I’m not sure if I can weld it. I’d rather leave it be, put it like that. I am aware of the pivot point, I’m intending to get different hinges or alter the ones I have.
Top build, started watching shine autos start an xr2 shell on a audi TT, build went on hold many moonz ago now, gona follow this fella, some great fab wrk, 👍 💭 thinkin outside the box 👌
Loving the build. As for the door i would just tig a strip of metal to extend the door skin forward. then use a scribe to mark a 1/2" gap then cut it. saves having to move the door forward. unless you are willing to spend hundreds of hours on the roof, widening is crazy. even done super well the flex causes it to show back up in a year or 2.
The size of the door I don’t plans to change, but rather the wing as the fit of it needs work anyway. And fibreglass can be easy to work with in that respect… although difficult in others
Looking forward to following this build! Going to be pretty nice especially with flat 6 note from the boxster engine. Owned a 987 2.7 manual some years back and was a good car, enough power and nicely balanced for handling. Never imagined someone would pop a metro body on one😊👍
i think this build is a brave undertaking. I have one consideration. moving the pivot point on the doors will mean that the skin of the door forward of the pivot will make contact with the body by virtue of the throw of the door. im sure you can resolve it by removing the a pillar to the unibody bottom & use the metro a pillar structure and weld that on to the boxter frame. Either way I wish you massive success! Its a wicked ride!
Thanks, I had talked about the hinge and perhaps the need for a new one in an earlier video, possibly the second one although I hadn’t elaborated on why. But yes you are indeed correct and I ‘think’ I have a solution, but that will be when I tackle the doors. Thanks for watching!
absolutely loving this build. being a fan of the 6r4 for many years, only ever owning an '86 mg metro im loving this coming together! in regards to reference id recommend looking for the 'real vs rep' 6r4 video for getting gaps and lines and other things that may help as it gets in depth regarding a few things. All the best!
I’ve watched all the 6r4 videos including that one. Yea, they sort of are what they are, but I intend to just adapt it whatever way I need to for it to look the way I want.
Love fhe project mate, only thing i’d say that’ll give you a headache is using a more modern metro, the older version would have the older squared headlights etc in fhe right places for the panels to line up to
I have a few angles and measurements I can work of that someone gave me. The choice of this car came about really because it had not sunroof (rare in an early car) and it was the right price, I.e…. Cheap
I had that bodykit also years ago on my fiesty 1.8vvc metro back when the performance metro club days existed ... i never gave it the correct time to get fitted so it never look right. really looking forward to the updated of this. gearbox sticking out make it look even better IMHO ..
Sooo... You're basically building a Metro 6R2 out of a Boxster, by kinda eyeballing everything, cutting and wielding on the spot? That's fascinating! You gotta sub ^_^
@@pedenconceptz 🤣 nah, it definitely can work, but it still will be impressive in an age of informatic conception, when the manual craftsmanship is so rare 😊
Hi mate great progress so far . Looked miles away at start but you have done a great job. I turned an mr2 into a tumbler batmobile when people told me I was mad . It ended up in Sunday papers . Anyway I am in n.ireland so if you need any advice or help with bodywork , give me a shout. Regards Paul ptcreations keep up the good work.
Love this project, just binged all the videos. One thing I would suggest is maybe to start stripping more of the Boxster systems out? Things like the brake system - run a floor-mounted pedal box with twin circuits and res pots, then do away with the master cylinder/booster, brake valve, all the standard lines etc. Pushes the cost up a bit but not massively. Edit: Just wanted to add, I fully agree with your thoughts on the width and not chopping it in half.
Well I really just want it to be nice to drive, and making the breaking heavier wouldn’t be in line with that, but if I have to do it for space off the bonnet, I will. Otherwise I want to keep it driving/working as original as possible.
@@pedenconceptz totally understand, but if you get the ratio right for the pedal cylinder there's no reason it has to be dead heavy. Would save a huge amount of space and faff, and you'd avoid any issues with the change in weight distribution vs brake bias on the OEM Porsche system causing headaches with the abs etc
@@KrikkitWarlordare the Brakes on a Boxster a weak point? You are basically making a car that has ABS and ESP into a pre 90s version of itself? Also as it runs a Bosch system everything is linked, so if you take out the abs you also have no esp, speedo and it will go into limp home mode in the engine. Instead of just making a bracket
@@fraserwright9482 not really, but having a brake booster in an awkward spot isn't ideal (bracket and trimming bodywork excepted), the lines and the brake valve in the wheel arch are also in the wrong areas. From a technical point the ESP won't be working properly as the polar moment and CofG for the car will be different to the original build - so in this case you might end up with some odd behaviour (although the Bosch systems are incredibly adaptable, you might not notice). Really it was a suggestion from simplifying the build as much as possible.
Dare I say it, could you move the shell back again about 3-4mm? It would help that front arch centre over the wheel and reduce the gap from the arch to the door hinge point, AND bring more of the gearbox back under the rear of the body, but at the cost of the rear wheel being less centred in the arch? (Then add some plastic back into the rear arch and re-centre/cut the hole?) Lots of work now, but worth sorting so that you dont stare at the bits you dont like when its completed.
If I move it back the front arch gets worse. If I move it forward the gearbox gets worse. I think this is the spot for it, a little fibreglass work to the front wing and it will be fine…. I think. Either way I won’t be staring at it’s wrong, if it’s not right it will get re done
Loving this project,no drawings,no cad,no expensive fabrication or out sourcing. Just a man with a grinder and a dream.
Thanks, it takes the METABO grinder for this sort of action. But yes, there is no high budget to be spent here… unfortunately! Lol

This is one of the weirdest body swaps I've seen. I love it.
Thanks, hopefully the result will be pretty good though!
I had that bodykit also years ago on my fiesty 1.8vvc metro back when the performance metro club days existed ...
i never gave it the correct time to get fitted so it never look right.
really looking forward to the updated of this.
gearbox sticking out make it look even better IMHO ..
But yes, it will take a bit of time to get this one looking right too!
Hat off to you ! 👍🏻 loving your build 👍🏻
Great stuff. There is a lot to overcome with regard to those door shuts and pillars, but I sure you'll crack it
Provided I can get the hinges/new hinges to work I think it might not be too bad.
Sooo... You're basically building a Metro 6R2 out of a Boxster, by kinda eyeballing everything, cutting and wielding on the spot? That's fascinating! You gotta sub ^_^
Well when you say it like that it sounds like it might not work, lol
@@pedenconceptz 🤣 nah, it definitely can work, but it still will be impressive in an age of informatic conception, when the manual craftsmanship is so rare 😊
Great video, great content, I'm loving following this build, cant wait for the next one. 😊
Thanks very much, appreciated!
This is an amazing build ,,,,,, it’s gonna be a bit of engineering ,,,,,
Hi mate great progress so far .
I think I’ve seen that you know!
Awesome project bro 😁🤘 the gaffer tape and straps are enough mate no need to weld 🤣🤣 cant wait till its done .😁😁🤘🤘🇹🇭🇹🇭
I got it out of the corner shop so it’s the good stuff!
Big thumbs up from me. We love our motor sports here in Ireland/N.Ireland. NW200 this week 😊.
I can’t see me getting to it, il be in the garage I’d say! Lol
