    The trade off for missing the perfect photo is actually being present to experience it in real time, especially so if you might have missed it altogether being on a smartphone.

      Unless you get to print the photos, you never actually look at the photos and even get to see the moment let alone cherish it.

    I have watched several of your videos and enjoyed hearing of what mental changes you evolved through from disconnecting from a "smart" phone. Agree with much of your observation and the truth of how portable technology has changed us. I am 70 years old . I want to add that having a way to communicate with others with us all the time has caused a huge change in our cultural psyche and individual relationships. How far do we take this rejection? Could you give up your phone completely and go back to only having one in your home or place of work? There is something to be said for not being able to communicate with others not with you at the whim of the moment. Imagine the paradigm shift you would experience if you gave up that convenience. There was a time when you went off to college or the military you really went off and out of people's lives for extended periods of time. My youngest daughter was in college 5 years ago. She said many of her fellow students could not go a day without calling home.

      I am so glad I caught your comment before I got off my computer! As time passes I think there is A LOT to say about what you're talking about here. I have considered landlines, but for me personally, there is a safety aspect of having a phone on my person because I'm not just in charge of me, but my little ones and payphones are almost non-existent anymore. So to answer the question, yes I think I could easily go to a landline but have made a personal choice not to. I think it's a very good question to ask, how far could we take the rejection of this technology. I was recently discussing with my husband that people used to leave home, be disconnected with friends or family for long periods of time, yet the relationships didn't degrade or instantly fall apart. We recently had a friend over that we hadn't spoken to in a few years (because honestly we've just been swamped with being new parents) and it was absolutely delightful. We had wonderful conversation and when they had to go I felt that our friendship with that person was just as good, if not better, than any other relationships I have with friends elsewhere. I think there is a lot to be learned about the way the newer technology is affecting our communication and it's important with all aspects of our lives to really try and live with intention and thoughtfulness.

    When I transtioned to a feature phone the first time I went out and bought a GPS for my car, that was a great decision to make the transition easier, and then recently bought an inreach GPS for backpacking. I also pulled out an iPod classic I had laying around. I did have to transition from spotify to buying my music, but I think in the long run that is the better option for all parties.

    The past year I have purchased 2 GPS units for our vehicles. I bought them at a thrift store. I paid $2.50 for the TomTom with free lifetime map updates and I just bought a Garmin for $6.50 with free lifetime map updates. Better than cell gps because we have been places that have no cell reception but we could use the GPS units. I have been simplifying my life this year and these have helped along with my nice digital camera and paper planner.

    I love what you said about being a consumer vs creating. In a perfect world we could all use smartphones more for creating and less consuming, but me personally and lot of other people don’t have that discipline and not to mention smartphones and apps were built to hook you in to consume. This is old news now though, everyone knows but have just accepted. It’s tough though because smartphones are amazing and handy tools when used properly

    • @CaptainAiryca
      @CaptainAiryca  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's so tough! I hate that feeling of having to accept that this is just how it is. But it sure seems like it unless you really put a significant effort into doing something different. I don't know. I really wonder what the future holds.

    Very interesting discussion, It sounds like you are enjoying your freedom ha ha. I have no idea why this was suggested to me other than the other day I was looking at new phones and .... like you stated in the video, had made a comment to my wife about just going back to a flip phone. The no GPS thing is a big thing I would struggle with as I use apps like OnX maps to navigate out of service areas using satellite photo maps and maps for navigating lakes with property boundaries. I would also miss the camera I think as well, but like you said it seems we take more photos than we will ever use, and can be distracted from the moment fooling with a phone. I know it is very frustrating to try and spend time with others who cannot get their face out of their phone, sad. Personally I am not on social media on my phone so that is not a struggle, but the mapping is a big part of why I bought a phone, just wish we could get stripped down models with no pre installed spyware attached ha ha.

    Just bought the Kyocera DuraXE Epic. Love the ruggedness and the flip feature. Last time I used the button phone was back in 2015, ready to go back to that type of texting. A phone should be a exactly what it’s called - a phone:))). Also, the video on installing Signal would be cool. By the way, subscribed!

    • @CaptainAiryca
      @CaptainAiryca  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll try and figure out a video or blog post or something on signal. It might be a bit so heres the short version if you're tech savvy - you unlock developer mode (there is a TH-cam video for that), go to Apps4Flip and get their launcher and the cursor app. Then download signals apk. Now, the security picture selection and then entering the code to verify your ID is tricky. I waited and had them call, you can answer the call and go back to the install screen, but you can't check a text and then go back to the install screen, it'll restart the install. Anyway if you can be patient the install is frustrating but then it works fine!

    I got my first phone when I was 13, since I was starting to go to friends' houses alone. It was a touch screen. I downgraded the next phone to a flip keyboard type, and the third was my favorite. A Samsung Rugby flip phone. My girlfriend at the time(now my wife) told me to get a smart phone so I could Snapchat her. She hated me having a flip phone. Now, on my fourth smart phone. They are getting more and more unreliable, I have had 6 or 7 cameras replaced on this S22 Ultra. I spend far too much time on social media, so I have been looking back to flip phones. Unfortunately, my old one will not be supported by my carrier, so I have been looking at the one you have. I really appreciate the video! Guess I need to have a talk with my wife about going back to a flip phone, wish me luck!

    Haven’t had any social media for several years but I still use TH-cam a lot. Video was very encouraging as I have wanted to get rid of my smart phone for several years. My only things I am worried about is I run my own business and use texting a good bit for that and I am worried I won’t be able to type bigger texts as easy and also I use gps a good bit for figuring out where I need to go to jobs. I know looking up the route before I go has really caused me to pay more attention to where I am going though! Maybe I can be brave enough to make a leap soon!! Thanks!

      Hey Cody, I'm also venturing into this "zone". Idk if you've seen or checked out the SunbeamF1 (but it comes with Waze, has a decent camera) just has no App Store. I'd actually love to hear from Captain Airyca about where she's at with it, now. The biggest denominator for me is that coming from an iPhone.. you really come to value voice to text! I also am getting fed up waking up and spending stupid amounts of time watching TH-cam/FB Reels.

    • @CaptainAiryca
      @CaptainAiryca  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You got this! I also think a separate work phone makes a lot of sense so you can have boundaries with personal life stuff. But I know that's not workable for everyone. You could get a GPS! Some flip phones are compatible with google messages which means you can type long texts on a computer as well. I don't know if I really recommend using Google stuff but for a business it might work.

    • @CaptainAiryca
      @CaptainAiryca  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @stem9491 I've heard the Sunbeam phones have amazing voice to text. I've never actually tried to use voice to text before, even on a smartphone. Is that weird? haha! I am still at it years later with the Kyocera flip! Sunbeam would be my next choice for a phone for sure. I thought I'd need a browser as a crutch in case I got lost somewhere or needed to look something up and I've only used it once in over 3 years

    I bought a Cat S22 flip phone and the big advantage of this is the small screen 2.8 inchs lol, and because it’s too small, I can’t do anything with it 😅, and that’s so good, can’t go on instagram with it,TH-cam on a small screen is terrific haha and that’s amazing, but what I like when you said when you go outside you leave all your emails and I think this is what I’m gonna do, cause I don’t have to care about my emails. I turned off all notifications except for sms and phone and bank stuff. I only installed the basic apps, and removed apps I do use them a lot but decided to check them on the ipad only, when I’m outside I don’t use same apps everywhere, I think it’s a good idea to put all emails, social media and distracting apps in only one device instead of putting them everywhere and checking them every second. Thank you for your videos

    Smart phones are scary. I got a small backpack out the other day and a few hours later I got two ads from ARC'TERYX OUTLET which eerily is the same brand of the pack. Hadn’t seen an ad for any other brands of packs ever that I can recall.
    Unfortunately my only computer is my iPhone so it’s hard to ditch. You are spot on about them being tools of consumption vs creation.

    • @CaptainAiryca
      @CaptainAiryca  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that is way too creepy for my liking! If you felt motivated to ditch the smart phone, (not saying you should to each their own) you could get a dumbphone that has hotspot capabilities and only use your iPhone at home, or when you need it. Whatever boundaries you saw fit. It's not as convenient but that's the point. But I wouldn't recommend the switch unless you're motivated with clear goals to do so. If you do feel motivated though, you won't regret it!!

    What is the easiest way to try out the dumb phone? Like do you need to go to your carrier or can you just switch something out from your iPhone?

    • @CaptainAiryca
      @CaptainAiryca  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had an android. When I was with Verizon I had to call them to make the switch. When I switched to Twigby for my carrier I have a sim card that swaps between any phone that is compatible with them.

      I understand and it takes a lot of intentionality. The most extreme option is sell it. You can also set boundaries like only use it at your desk or only for a certain amount of time a day. Whatever works best for you! It's important to think about your goals and what you're trying to achieve. General guilt for using it without thinking about what you're striving for will be less successful. I limit my tablet (old smartphone) use to only certain times of day.

    • @bobcollinge4292
      @bobcollinge4292 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CaptainAiryca That is really good advice. Thank you. Having a defined goal or outcome is definitely a good idea. Limiting use or functions is a good start. I don't think I want to sell my smartphone...yet.
