I guess at $14-15k for a machine like that, if you are in the business of earning a living doing work like that in a shop, or on the field, then it's worth it over time. But not for the DYI guy going these types of projects. For the DYI person, a small Harbor Freight sand and media parts blaster is the way to go if you have lots to do. For a few small jobs on a budget, a wire wheel on a bench grinder (or for portability, a fast portable drill) with proper eye wear, welding gloves and a bib is really all you need.
I have an upright piano that I want to refinish so but scare of how long it would take to use the normal chemical stripper. I found the laser method a few months ago, so I was excited to see a longer video on how they work. Even if this one isn't able to remove stain.
I attempted to remove some stain from some old cabinet doors. My particular doors had been coated with polyurethane. I found that the polyurethane wound up kind of burning. I have seen other videos of laser, cleaners removing wood stain. I did not take the time to research how to do this. I’m not sure if I had the wrong settings punched in or if the polyurethane just made it impossible. From videos online though it seems like some units can do it. Perhaps a bit of research would lead to me realize that this machine is actually more capable of it than I realize??? Thank you for commenting and for subscribing.
The pulsed model laser cleaner can clean rust paint graffiti oxidized layers of oil welds etc. on both metallic and non-metallic materials without damaging the substrate.
Personally I would sand a piano by hand. I would use sticky backed sand paper that comes in a roll that can be torn off at any length and make myself a few different lengths of wood blocks to stick that sandpaper to. It would take time but would result in the flattest smooth even surface possible. No power tools for fear or burning or digging.
I think I would very quickly rig up a system with a linear actuator/rail system so that it could run on its own. Sure it looks fun for a while but I think for large objects and for best results I would think that would be the way to go!

It is interesting. I wonder how you could use it under tight spaces safely, like a frame of a trailer. With car oil and all it would not be safe to use around a vehicle but maybe work trailers and camper frames to remove rust.
With thick enough oil coated on anything you’re correct. This would definitely ignite thick layers of grease and oil. It would be a good idea to have a lot of ventilation and a fire extinguisher very close by before you attempt anything like that. Thanks for commenting and for subscribing!

Looks like attaching this thing to a CNC Gantry would make a lot of sense if you had a lot of material to clean. That way you could both optimize the Z axis and reduce the need to manually carry, hold and move the darn thing.
I had the same thought. I’m sure it would be possible to attach to a CNC. I don’t have room for one so I probably won’t be able to try it but I definitely think it’s possible. Thanks for commenting twice!!!
Do yourself a favor. You should have received a bendable plastic line that threads into the top of the laser body. That is for air to be blown onto the lens or you can aim it at what you are cleaning. It helps keep the lens clean. I have this machine as well as a 1500w cw
Thanks for the tip! I didn’t hook it up because it obscured the shots of the cleaning but unless I’m in windy conditions I plan on using that tube and hooking up to a compressor. Thanks for commenting!
Not sure if your iPhone app store can download camera apps where you can use a custom shutter speed for video but on my Android i just randomly found one app where i can do that and it's amazing to get a more human like video where the shutter speed can be locked to 60, 50, 40, 30 and many more then i can take the ISO way down and get much better quality and have just perfect motion blur and no light flickering
If you have a painted car part (for instance, an engine block or wiper motor housing) and want to remove oil/grease, can settings be adjusted to remove just the surface grime without affecting the paint or does the laser clean down to bare metal every time?
Yes it should be able to handle that just fine. It may slightly mar the tile finish though since it technically scours into the surface just a tiny bit. If you could stick to just the grout though it would probably work fine. Thanks for commenting.
Is this the same laser they're using to trim trees ?? How much do they cost ?? AliExpress has this one for under $300 . Is that one real or junk ? And where can I get the right safety glasses for it ??
There were links in the description but I just found out last week they discontinued this model for a more powerful (and more expensive) one. I’m sorry. Thanks for watching!!!
completely unrelated question - do you think the metal fabrication/machining industries would be a sustainable career change choice for someone in their 30's with 4 kids?
I have a hard time, imagining the future of such an industry right now. I follow the development of the robotic space fairly closely. Even though most people don’t seem to be aware of it, at this time, it seems likely that humanoid robots may be on a tipping point toward becoming very “helpful” in the next five years. if humanoid robots, do indeed, become actually useful in the next several years, I could see that disrupting industries where things are welded on a massive scale. Assembly lines, especially. If you are talking about an industry of metal fabrication, where items are made at low volume, I think there’s a better chance that this industry may remain stable. I think, assembly lines in general, are going to be very disrupted in the next decade. I would certainly encourage everyone to pursue metal fabrication as a hobby to some degree. It is an incredibly powerful skill set. I just don’t know as far as being a new career. If you are considering changing to this career, I would advise having a diverse skill set where you would have the option to produce low-volume products. I hope that makes sense. Thank you for your thought-provoking question.
@alexanderkonczal3908 The other concern is about competition/existing users or businesses. There are companies who have other means : Acid, media blasting. I can imagine machine shops buying this, not to mention the other shops that process rust. You may ask the local machine shops and auto restoration shops if they have one and if you provided that as a service, how much time per month they would need your service. Best wishes! :)
I didn’t get the battery for this machine. If you check the link in the description I think they go into more detail on battery life. It was at least a few hours. The laser will clean multiple surfaces including stone. I found it works best on metal though.
Technically yes. The very surface is slightly removed. But it’s so superficial that you can barely even tell. If you leave the gun still for too long you can see a slight depression where the laser repeatedly scoured into the metal. Thanks for commenting and for subscribing!
About subscribing… I love your channel for DIY projects, steel work, and welding. Keep it up! In my past life I learned how to MiG weld but today I don’t know where to start concerning purchasing, safety, and if MIG is the way to go? Could you possibly post a video on where to start or what you use?
I did not see what laser source this machine is using other than it is a 100watt laser. I have a 100watt JPT. I set the Pulse to 500ns and the frequency to 68khz for max power output. With that I can cut through 16gauge steel with about 200 passes going 1000 mm/sec and a 160mm lens. Did this machine come with any recommended settings?
The settings are largely adjustable. This laser has a gun the sweeps the beam around. If yours is able to cut I would imagine it doesn’t sweep the beam? The link in the description will have more details.
@@suburbanbiology Yes, the beam sweeps across the material with a galvo head. That is 2 mirrors attached to 2 motors that rapidly moves the beam around.
I've been a coded welder for 40 years, and I don't think even I could get value from a machine like that. I'm not saying that it wouldn't occasionally have been useful, but it would never have been 10 grand useful.
I must admit that the 10k price tag is still high which is why I got a ding/dent version. The prices seem to be falling rapidly which is part of why I didn’t mention price in the video. I’m betting it will be like many technologies where in 5 years it will 90% off. Just curious do you think this thing would be 1k useful or not even that?
@@suburbanbiology Personally, not for me. I can do 99% of what that machine can do with a 4 inch grinder and a flap disk, faster, way cheaper and lighter. I notice it has a 1 year guarantee (except for misuse) on everything except the laser source, so I wouldn't expect it to last much longer than that if used in an industrial setting, and even at $1k, that's still not good value for my use case.
If you work on cars or some other things where you deal with lots of rust then this would be great. As a car mechanic that struggles with LOTS OF RUST this would be amazing. I usually use a pneumatic needle descaler then sanding or a small wire wheel on an pipe to reach hard spots, have made my own with copperpipe and steel wires and then soldered for a pin wire wheel, it's slow but the only functional tool sometimes and a laser would be soo much faster and better than solvents, knife blades, sand paper and wire wheel for so many things and do less damage to the base metal
I’ve never been a welder and I disagree I think it would pay for itself rich people don’t like to wait and would be awed by the technology. Restoring old car parts etc / boats / tools / toys/ antiques/ tools
Cool tool but the dangerous, boring, low effort, and low cost method you shown with brake fluid seems better. The laser does seem ideal for the fence posts although a wire wheel on the pipe ends after cutting might be good. I bought a low end plasma cutter.
I should do that. I heard from the company recently that they discontinued that particular model to focus on a higher powered unit. Thanks for the feedback!
I’m pretty sure the primer on those steel beams is oil-based paint. If you are asking if I have tried metal that is coated in grease and oil. Yes I have. This laser works well on both. Like I said in the video it takes a little bit of time, but for small, very irregular surfaces it works incredibly well
Forgive my ignorence on this subject, but I am curious about something. Obviously, this device is faster than a sand blaster/media blaster, but is it cheeper to operate?
Cheaper to operate, yes. Cheaper to purchase maybe not. I guess it depends if you buy a sand blasting cabinet or not. Thanks for commenting and for subscribing!
This machine actually comes with a little bendable straw that you can hook up to an air compressor to blow the smoke away from the work Peace. For the sake of this video, I thought that that obstructed the view of the workpiece too much though. By the end of the video I had already slightly damaged one of the protective lenses. I probably should’ve mentioned that in the video body. Maybe I will add that to the description right now just for the sake of clarity. Thank you for commenting, and for subscribing.
@@suburbanbiologyThe use of a fan (even worse a blower) is always a bad idea with airborne contaminants (you just spread them and/or put them back into the air for several minutes/hours depending on the aerodynamical diameters). It's better to suck the smoke near the surface with an industrial (fireproof) vaccuum that has an HEPA filter.
Unfortunately no it was not 1,000. I don’t think I said that anywhere. Maybe the title?? Thousands was spelled with a dollar sign instead of s. It was meant to grab attention not to mislead. I got it about half priced due to slight damage to the machine. Prices are still high. My guess is that prices will come down rather rapidly over time. Thanks for commenting!
This is the second comment that seems concerned about me not wearing a respirator. I am confused why folks are asking. unless I missed something I wore a respirator with an organic vapor cartridge in every scene that I was using the laser. Which scene are you referring to? Thanks for commenting!

Yeah I got mine I’m beat up condition for cheaper than the 15 they sell for today. They are not cheap unfortunately. Thanks!
Looks like attaching this thing to a CNC Gantry would make a lot of sense if you had a lot of material to clean. That way you could both optimize the Z axis and reduce the need to manually carry, hold and move the darn thing.
Sure for odd 3D shaped objects this wouldn't work great, but, for mostly 2D surfaces like beams and other materials it would make sense.
That would be awesome. Maybe someday. I need a bigger workshop 😂
Could you hook the device up to a cnc machine? Obviously it would be better to have a dedicated machine, but it might make it useful?
Like a mini crop circle.
😂
Love it! I want one too.
They aren’t cheap…..but they ARE fun! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@suburbanbiology love your videos. It’s my pleasure. Keep making more.
If you want to know more about laser cleaner you can contact me!
Can this be used to safely remove bondo and paint from aluminum?
We'll have to wait a few years for the aliexpress version..
If you have a painted car part (for instance, an engine block or wiper motor housing) and want to remove oil/grease, can settings be adjusted to remove just the surface grime without affecting the paint or does the laser clean down to bare metal every time?
so when will I be able to get my 40k Imperial guard lasgun?
Would this clean tile and grout? If so, it would be awesome for cleaning nasty tile showers.
Yes it should be able to handle that just fine. It may slightly mar the tile finish though since it technically scours into the surface just a tiny bit. If you could stick to just the grout though it would probably work fine. Thanks for commenting.
Where are your laser safety glasses for IR Mayne OD7+? 1064-`1070nm?
HI would like to see how its works on wood surface if possible?Thank you
It burns it 😂 even if I wet the wood I could not get it to clean it without burning it. Maybe operator error?? 🤷
Ah ok i think that its possible without correct settings that it burns the wood for sure😊
The Sistine Chapel is cleaned with a laser. No harsh chemicals or human touch.
What camera did you buy and what frame rates were effective for showing the laser?
Brilliant project Congratulations CAN BE USE FOR CUTTING TREE I THE FOREST???
Technically a stronger version of this laser could be. A channel called backyard scientist showed that. Thanks for commenting and for subscribing!
You'd likely put the forest on fire as well. Please don't.
Is this the same laser they're using to trim trees ??
How much do they cost ?? AliExpress has this one for under $300 .
Is that one real or junk ? And where can I get the right safety glasses for it ??
Would an exhaust fan help? Even outside that vaporised surface drifts upward toward you and the lens.
Yes a portable Makita fan is helpful. Would have altered the video and audio though so I avoided it here.
Where can I get one? I have been a fabricator for a while that looks a whole lot easier and less time ❤
There were links in the description but I just found out last week they discontinued this model for a more powerful (and more expensive) one. I’m sorry. Thanks for watching!!!
WOAH!!! 😮
continius or CW laser is cheper a lot, pulse is more complex and expensive
completely unrelated question - do you think the metal fabrication/machining industries would be a sustainable career change choice for someone in their 30's with 4 kids?
What length of time did you get from the battery? Can this unit be used on other materials? Wood , stone that kinda of thing?
Great video by rhe way
I didn’t get the battery for this machine. If you check the link in the description I think they go into more detail on battery life. It was at least a few hours. The laser will clean multiple surfaces including stone. I found it works best on metal though.
I wanted one. Then saw the price tag. 15k is too much for the few times that I need it I guess i'll stick to the sand and compressor one.
Any issue with toxic fumes from the material that is being burnt off?
I wear a respirator when I use this. Yes there is risk from the fumes that burn off. Thanks for commenting!
Super cool tool, but if you're filming in real time, seems like a grinder could do the job nearly the same speed for a fraction of the cost.
Yeah I think that’s a fair summary. The more expensive ones are faster but this model was already at the ceiling of what I was willing to pay.
Holy 💩!!! That suckers expensive.
Yes it is 😞 I got mine discounted for scratch and dent. But it still wasn’t cheap. It’s fun though!
But can you create a jig to turn this into a lawnmower?
😂 could do
Intrestin whats the price
Links in description. This model was discontinued. Newer more powerful model is more expensive 😔
Does a laser take any metal off like sand blasting?
Good points, all. Thanks for watching both videos and for commenting!
IM SOLD!
So HOW affordable is this tool of MAGIC?
Lmao you don't have to explain why you fast forward it. We , i appreciate it.
I just didn’t want to be accused of over-reporting the machine’s abilities. Thanks for commenting!
Can you cross the steams?
Only once 😂
What is the effect on rust?
Super effective at removing rust.
where to buy this machine in Europe ? please send links :)
I put links in the description. I’m not sure if they will work in Europe. Worth a shot though. Thanks!
Your Amazon link is to an unavailable item, but the item is merely moved to another link. You could update it.
I should do that. I heard from the company recently that they discontinued that particular model to focus on a higher powered unit. Thanks for the feedback!
ive you tired metal that was oil painted?
I’m pretty sure the primer on those steel beams is oil-based paint. If you are asking if I have tried metal that is coated in grease and oil. Yes I have. This laser works well on both. Like I said in the video it takes a little bit of time, but for small, very irregular surfaces it works incredibly well
@@suburbanbiology i mean like metal fences with oil paint
Ghostbusters ASMR. 😊
lol. I should have named the channel THAT! 😂 thanks for commenting!
Can it cut threw steel ?????
Only if you hold it REALLY still for a very long time 😂
So did cost thousands ?
Indeed. I got it around half priced since it was a bit banged up. Still works great though.
Can you provide the approximate cost of the machine?
Link in description. The price fluctuates but full price last I checked was near 10k.
If you want to know more about laser cleaner you can contact me!
Be great to weld on where the laser has cleaned that area
That’s the main reason I wanted it. To prep irregular surfaces before I weld them. Sometimes a grinder can’t get into nooks etc.
Concerning the smoke getting to the lens. I think the use of a fan could prevent that when using in doors.

RustBusters -- Who you Gonna Call?
They used a laser to clean the Sistine chapel.
Hi there sorry but I've already subscribed but I have hit the lick button
I appreciate any and all buttons. Thanks! 🙏🏼
"lick" button 😝😂
Use specialized glasses when using it and do not use it around others. See what Styropyro wears.
I included them in my other laser video but forgot to mention safety gear in this one. I do indeed use special glasses. Thanks for commenting!!
I’m not sure if I misheard something, but I thought the laser cleaner was ≈ $1,000 but the one you linked to is $10,000
Unfortunately no it was not 1,000.
What does it taste like breathing in the fumes from that without a face mask? :)
This is the second comment that seems concerned about me not wearing a respirator. I am confused why folks are asking. unless I missed something I wore a respirator with an organic vapor cartridge in every scene that I was using the laser. Which scene are you referring to? Thanks for commenting!
@suburbanbiology ...with a beard and probably without a proper and valid fit test and instructions, might I ask ?
How the hell do you afford a 14K laser tool? Teach me your ways!
Hi
Hello
✨💗✨
$12k!?. If I had that kind of money I could just hire someone to do it for me.
I worked with Laser from 82-89. Stop the job b/c i had saved enough to by me a farm the thing I really wanted
What u have there is an engraving laser with all it innards made small and a focal point that is much further away then the ones I used. Yes this lasers I used were bought in 81. U could blast something of the medal or etch in the medal.
I would love to have one of those but 10K is just to much
And did u actually pay 10K for that thing.
It was about half price due to dings and scratches etc. thanks for commenting!!!
Cook a steak or a hot dog next please.
lol. It would take a while. Maybe a tiny hot dog could get heated. I saw tech ingredients do a steak but that was with a HUGE laser diode. Thanks for commenting!
@@suburbanbiology oh yeah he did. Thanks for the video. You never went into the prices of these machines. Used or new.
Also are you concerned about the laser's lifespan?
It’s very cheap, only $15,200 in September 2024
$10,000. no thanks
I was all set to buy the 15k laser pack but it wasn’t offered as prime 2 day delivery. Deal breaker
😂 Amazon needs to get on that!
$15k....
I got scratch and dent price on a recently discontinued model. It was much cheaper than that. I’m sorry things changed since I published the video.
It’s 10 grand for that machine you must be loaded
I got a scratch and dent version without a battery so it was marked down significantly.
Can you start a fire in your fire pit with it
Yes I could 😂 thanks for commenting!
lol Be very suspicious when a person doesnt tell you the cost of the item. Its no longer available on amazon and the other link he gave that he said will earn a commission from sales of it, you will be gouged for 140000 plus tax and shipping costs
They discontinued the model in this video about two months after I made this video. I had no warning. And you’re right the new version is more expensive. The model I used was about 10k. I’m sorry they did that.
