I kind of liked the whole “professional athlete/celebrity turned wannabe superhero” backstory Bette had as Flamebird in the 90’s. Has the current versions retained that aspect? I’ve been out of the loop the last few years.
That was Batwoman's story. She was, like, an actress and heiress or something. Then decided she was going to fight crime in a gaudy yellow jumpsuit and ugly red mask.
In the newer Batwoman comics I think she's a thrill seeking teenager who Kate decides to help train despite her not believing in Bette's heroic abilities.
To be fair, Batwoman's death occured after Julius Schwartz was not longer editor of the Bat titles. Paul Levitz was editor of Detective Comics when Kathy Kane was killed by the League of Assassins

Can you do a video on Cassandra Cain? I finally got around to watching the “Birds of Prey” movie (I had to wait until I was sure I wouldn’t break my tv because of the lack of Babs...among many many other things) and while I’m happy they acknowledged her existence, I’m pretty salty about her portrayal (among other things). Cass is a relatively obscure character so the “Birds of Prey” movie is likely the only version of her most people who aren’t actually into Batman comics, know about and I don’t think it really does her justice, not to mention isn’t super accurate. Cass is a BAMF and deserves some love, like she can whoop Batman and that alone is amazing. Your Batman voice made me laugh out loud! The first time I saw this Bat-Girl was in Teen Titans vol 1 #51. I was 5 years old at it was one of my first "big boy" comic books.
I just discovered your channel and I love it. You approach comics the same way I do, with a focus on individual stories, but still loving all the background industry stuff. Thanks for talking about Bette Kane and Bat-Girl, I've always wondered about her. Also, I just heard about the news that DC is breaking from Diamond Distribution. Do you think that maybe a video about how weird comic distribution is could be in the future?
My first, and only exposure to the character was in a few issues of the original Teen Titans run that ended in the early 70's. While I found the confusion of some of the other characters as to who she was to be amusing and her reaction of, "...no that's the OTHER Batgirl" was indicative of her obvious frustration, beyond that she was really kind of Vanilla...like a white bread and mayo sandwich. I never really knew her origin before this and had assumed, like many, that she had been introduced at the same time as Batwoman and because of....the book. (which, as an aside you can find for under 50 bucks on amazon right now in an edition from 2006). Don't get me wrong, I think the character had potential, but I don't think writers at the time really had any idea what to do with her, especially after the introduction of Barbara Gordon and I"m guessing her appearance in the original Titans book was some attempt to revitalize the character that sort of fell short of the mark. I haven't seen any of her more modern iterations but I hope the writers were better able to deal with her than past writers have been.
Bette Kane's later post-crisis appearances were just retcon-riffic. I still wonder what would have happened if BatWoman and Bat-Girl had caught on and were part of the TV series rather than a creation of Batgirl.
There is a reprint edition of Seduction of the Innocent on Amazon for about $45. Still expensive, but a required read for those interested in the history of comics.
We all just need to take a moment to appreciate the voice talents Sasha uses for each character as she reads to us. That Batman voice alone would make Kevin Conroy think twice.
Wow a comic story from before I started reading comics a few years later. (As I was from the U.S., but living in England for a time, I started reading Dr. Who comics, but I returned to the U.S. a few years later, (living in Toronto for a year,) and before the 60's were over was reading DC and Marvel. Which, back then, often contained re-prints of older stories, so yeah I knew of Bat-woman and Bat-girl. And I remember when Robin went through (tried) several costumes (reader submitted - in one story) before he became "Nightwing". (A friend of FlameBird, who he'd met previously.) One of those, which was kinda light and dark brown I recall liking. (though I can't remember it well.) (Kind of like that beastly character, with claws, who had a dark/light brown costume... Timber Wolf. (Wolver-who?)) As always thank you so very much for your efforts, observations, and the awesome videos.
I love first Bat Girl . Looks like someone at Marvel did too as they made Marvel Girl's costume an obvious homage to Bat Girl's ensemble. First Bat Girl I mean.

I get that, without the Golden Age, we wouldn’t have comics period. But, damn. I don’t know if it’s because information wasn’t as available today or if they were just lazy. But, the creators of the Golden Age were apparently all out of “spits” to give when it came to creating characters. A few managed to last. Yet, for every Batman, there are dozens of Captain Battles and the like.
To be fair, when I grew up in the 70's teenagers were still trying to stop crooks with balloons. Do to the high smoking rates, it went about as well as it did in the comics. I had tried a ballon animal myself... it was not pretty.
Quite Frankly she might have work if Barbara stay as Oracle and they bring out a character that bring light to the darkness that is the Batman family . I also don t mean it as something to bright thing up but more to emphasis on the shadow that these hero live in and have struggle with. Approach people and investigate differently more socially then hanging people on top of a building upside down. Usually those people have family and normal reference that might need to talk and could bring a new solution to a problem that Batman being more and more violent have forgotten to approach and that an assassin like his son would failed to relate. The DC universe have become a very dark place for Batman team someone who can do the job in her own way to what Alfreda have to provide could be very interesting. Maybe her other persona could be a student nurse or a psychologist ? Something like that might work and being the cousin of bat woman I could definitely see her being a folder to bat-woman more military mind set.
Sometimes people still tell me it is and i'm like then why was it spelled Betty lol also Bette Davis but at the end of the day I'm like I have other hills to be on.
It's interesting that there was a Batgirl before Barabra Gordon. Then again that really shouldn't come off as too much of a surprise seeing as most of the golden and early silver age consisted of early versions of characters that existed before their more iconic counterparts came along, such as with Jay Garrik's Flash, or Allen Scott's Green Lantern.
We need a segment on the Batman villain Signalman. I've been intrigued by him ever since he turned up in Justice League of America as a member of the Secret Society of Supervillains.

It wasn't black construction paper, it was black carbon paper. Before Xerox machines (aka photocopiers) became commonplace, copies would be made by inserting a sheet of carbon paper between two sheets of white paper in the typewriter. As you typed and the keys hit the first sheet of white paper, the impact through that sheet of paper and the carbon paper would cause the same letter to be printed on the second sheet, thus making a carbon copy. This is where we get the email abbreviation "cc" from: "carbon copy." Damn, I'm old.

When I was a kid and I saw that picture of the Batman Family in one of the Batman Annuals from this time period. I assumed Batgirl was a bigger part of things then she was. I was disappointed to find that her and Batwoman were only in a handful of issues. I had like 3 issues with Batgirl and later found out that was like half of her appearances!

Young Justice did a great job of bringing Betty Kane to the DCAU. I wish they would bring her back as Flamebird.

While I found the confusion of some of the other characters as to who she was to be amusing and her reaction of, "...no that's the OTHER Batgirl" was indicative of her obvious frustration, beyond that she was really kind of Vanilla...like a white bread and mayo sandwich. I never really knew her origin before this and had assumed, like many, that she had been introduced at the same time as Batwoman and because of....the book. (which, as an aside you can find for under 50 bucks on amazon right now in an edition from 2006). Don't get me wrong, I think the character had potential, but I don't think writers at the time really had any idea what to do with her, especially after the introduction of Barbara Gordon and I"m guessing her appearance in the original Titans book was some attempt to revitalize the character that sort of fell short of the mark. I haven't seen any of her more modern iterations but I hope the writers were better able to deal with her than past writers have been.
Someone should tell DC, We found a Replacement Protagonist to fill Ruby Rose's(The Actress not the Rwby Character) Shoes.

And I think the creators confirmed her middle name was Elizabeth

Bette Kane's later post-crisis appearances were just retcon-riffic. I still wonder what would have happened if BatWoman and Bat-Girl had caught on and were part of the TV series rather than a creation of Batgirl.

Wow a comic story from before I started reading comics a few years later. (As I was from the U.S., but living in England for a time, I started reading Dr. Who comics, but I returned to the U.S. a few years later, (living in Toronto for a year,) and before the 60's were over was reading DC and Marvel. Which, back then, often contained re-prints of older stories, so yeah I knew of Bat-woman and Bat-girl.
And I remember when Robin went through (tried) several costumes (reader submitted - in one story) before he became "Nightwing". (A friend of FlameBird, who he'd met previously.) One of those, which was kinda light and dark brown I recall liking. (though I can't remember it well.) (Kind of like that beastly character, with claws, who had a dark/light brown costume... Timber Wolf. (Wolver-who?))

I get that, without the Golden Age, we wouldn’t have comics period. But, damn. I don’t know if it’s because information wasn’t as available today or if they were just lazy. But, the creators of the Golden Age were apparently all out of “spits” to give when it came to creating characters. A few managed to last. Yet, for every Batman, there are dozens of Captain Battles and the like.

To be fair, when I grew up in the 70's teenagers were still trying to stop crooks with balloons. Do to the high smoking rates, it went about as well as it did in the comics. I had tried a ballon animal myself... it was not pretty.
Quite Frankly she might have work if Barbara stay as Oracle and they bring out a character that bring light to the darkness that is the Batman family . I also don t mean it as something to bright thing up but more to emphasis on the shadow that these hero live in and have struggle with. Approach people and investigate differently more socially then hanging people on top of a building upside down. Usually those people have family and normal reference that might need to talk and could bring a new solution to a problem that Batman being more and more violent have forgotten to approach and that an assassin like his son would failed to relate. The DC universe have become a very dark place for Batman team someone who can do the job in her own way to what Alfreda have to provide could be very interesting. Maybe her other persona could be a student nurse or a psychologist ? Something like that might work and being the cousin of bat woman I could definitely see her being a folder to bat-woman more military mind set.

It's interesting that there was a Batgirl before Barabra Gordon.
Then again that really shouldn't come off as too much of a surprise seeing as most of the golden and early silver age consisted of early versions of characters that existed before their more iconic counterparts came along, such as with Jay Garrik's Flash, or Allen Scott's Green Lantern.

It wasn't black construction paper, it was black carbon paper. Before Xerox machines (aka photocopiers) became commonplace, copies would be made by inserting a sheet of carbon paper between two sheets of white paper in the typewriter. As you typed and the keys hit the first sheet of white paper, the impact through that sheet of paper and the carbon paper would cause the same letter to be printed on the second sheet, thus making a carbon copy. This is where we get the email abbreviation "cc" from: "carbon copy."

When I was a kid and I saw that picture of the Batman Family in one of the Batman Annuals from this time period. I assumed Batgirl was a bigger part of things then she was. I was disappointed to find that her and Batwoman were only in a handful of issues. I had like 3 issues with Batgirl and later found out that was like half of her appearances!
