Hey Randy, just found and have been bindging your channel while being quarantined after contracting the delta variant...good times. I've been trying to explain the beauty of "high value" audio equipment to my friends for years. Thanks for making a home for us like minded people. I was planning on a few equipment upgrades; one being new outdoor speakers. Any thoughts or maybe a possible Saturday speaker shootout featuring indoor/outdoor speakers? Thank you for your service!🇺🇸 Dave C.
Happy to see a return to speaker shootouts. Glad to see the continued emphasis on value but noticed the bump in the definition of "cheap" from $600 to $1,000. Regardless the JBLs at $180 are a steal. Still an OK buy at $300 but why pay that. Patience, the price will change back down. I also have the original Q 3020s ( both bought based on your reviews ). And love both,. Your reviews were spot on.
I know you love the RP 500 ms. But appreciate your honesty with the JBLs. Thsts why I come here. I get honest opinions on more affordable gear. You're an everyman. And you have my respect! Peace ✌
I like that you gave me some more validation for purchasing the Klipsch rp500m's... Recently picked up an rp500c center when it was on sale, and have the the r41m's as surrounds currently, which I would be curious to see you do a review of someday (or the rp500c for that matter, probably moreso actually). I like that there seem to be new videos more frequently recently, and your reviews are getting continually better. Good work man and keep going!
I love my rp500ms. Since im uk based I paid a lot more for them, but they sound better than my Monitor Audio Bronze BX2's and my Kef Q100's which when new were in the same price bracket so im happy! Cheers Randy for another great video!
This is great. Exactly what I was looking for. We need a decent/affordable speaker for a 2 channel (eventually 2.1) setup for our small/medium sized living room for tv, movies, and some music. JBL's might just be the ticket. Thank you!
Great Shootout Randy. I missed the JBL Stage A130 when they were going for $180, hopefully they come back in stock and back on sale, till then I will have to suffer with my Klipsch RP-160m.
Q Acoustics 3020i. I’ve had them for about a year and think they are great. I do have sub woofer ( old JBL I had here ) with them now and it certainly fills out the sound more. I play mostly Apple Music Lossless through them and have old Pioneer 310 amp and rDAC to complete setup. I paid 199 euro , about 240usd for the speakers . I’m in Ireland and unusually for us here the Q Acoustics pricing is really competitive.
Thanks Randy for honest reviews. Here you have put JBL A130 on top of both Klipsch RP500M, and 600M. Is that from value perspective or just sound? Looking for something that sounds organic/musical (vs clinical monitors for music producers), rich texture and resolution, body. My need is for listening to high res music, classic ones, not for home theater. If you could suggest...i am considering RP600M/500M, Q 3020, 3030, JBL A130s and the likes.
Danny even liked the RP500M, and you know how picky he is. It's one of the best speakers he ever measured straight from the factory. Of course, he still didn't like the cheaper crossover parts in them
Hi thank you for your video,, it help me so much to understand about the clipsh quality,,,may i ask you plaese your opinion, i bye the R 820 F for main front, i was checking for sunround back the rp 400m or the 500m,,, and for the center main the RP404 C or RP 500C so what do you think? thank you in advance.
I just bought JBL Arena 170 tower speakers for ~230 dollars, they are repackaged with scratches on them, I think they MSRP for ~500 or so. What do you think about the value? I initially wanted to go with new pair of dayton audio T652 (without the Air tweeter)
Very informative Randy that JBL is the only one I have heard glad you compared this group....I gotta learn more about utilizing subwoofers they sound great in 2 channel setup's I have listened to...keep up the good work man..
Respect from the UK, love the show as always. I'm buying the Denon pma 600 ne for Christmas as in my budget and it's like a Swiss army knife , I know you have reviewed it thanks for that, would you recommend any of these speakers as a good match? I listen to the prodigy, oasis, nirvana, 90s rave tunes etc. Thanks.
Once again, I agree with you about the JBLs. I got mine when they were $179 a pair, and at that price they perform waaaaaay beyond their price range. I generally don't care for aluminum tweeters, but they got this one right! I just wish I would have bought another pair when they were priced right. They will go into the theater room I'm building as my dedicated music speakers. Paired with a good sub, they leave nothing to want.
Randy, thanks for your videos. If you had an experience do you recommend buying an external dac if I have a Denon pma600ne with dac inside? I couldn't find any information about the chip in the Denon. It could be an interesting topic to discuss: amplifier( internal dac inside) vs amplifier + dac (modi 3 or etc)
initially the dac in the pma600ne is just fine. I think long term you would want a more analytical and detail oriented dac for the 600. it's a very full bodied amp and having a tac to bring up the details would be a nice way to compliment it
How are the a130 compared to the 305mkii I got the 305 for my work speakers and they are excellent for the 200 I paid they are active so there is that to consider but I think they sound better than my sscs5 not as good as warfedale diamond i use for my Ht really thinking of going to a better ht speaker setup in have. Warfedale diamond 11.2. And paradigm the wierd tirangular dual woofr single tweeter for the rear. The center is it cant remember the name but super popular value option with Danny's crossover
GREAT Review Randy !!!!!!! I TOTALLY Agree with you on the Klipsches !!! I have BOTH the RP500M AND 600M ....The 500 just sounds BETTER overall... (Bought both on sale.. NOOOOO way was i buying them regular price.) Was PLEASANTLY surprised !!!! THANKS AGAIN !!!!!
Would you recommend a more expensive 5.25” bookshelf over a cheaper 6”? I’m thinking about the wharfedale denton 80s or evo 4.1s vs the diamond 12.2 or such.
I don't think there is any hard and fast rule. However, with the Wharfedale 4.1 that's going to be a completely different flavor of speaker over the 12.2 because of the driver choices. If your room can support the smaller speaker and you have the budget that is an option to explore for sure.
It's not only size, some speakers are better at how well they disperse the sound so tonal balance remains more consistent. I would guess from the reviews, the dentons have a smaller sweet spot than the diamond 12.2s if that matters. I think Wharedales have a smaller sweet spot in general. The 225s were like that but the 12.2s are a different design. Something to consider.
Thank you for this awesome review. I would love it if you would review the Stage A190 and/or do a comparison review with the Emotiva T2+. That would be amazing!
Interesting about the JBL's maybe if the price drops I may consider a pair just to compare them to the Klipsch RP 600's another great review thanks Randy keep up the good work.
Seriously struggling picking between klipsch R-41m £180 klipsch R-40m £255 or JBL a120 £150 for small living room as a soundbar replacement. Hooking it up to Sony blueray surround system and will be very near a wall (don't mind using port plugs) and already have a very good subwoofer. Will be mainly used for tv and movies all day but also love rock, prog, techno and 60s, 70s 80s stuff mainly. Will be sitting about 7 feet away.. is fateague really that bad with klipsch.. damn i wish I could just test these somewhere near where I live I do prefer the look of the klipsch of coarse but it doesn't matter that much (I'm also size restricted too 1ft tall speakers for where they are going)
I bought Q 3020 and Sony SSCS5 for my Stereo. It is a little disapponted that these speaker do not have enough bass to listen rock music like AC DC. But great for Classical genre.
“Did we just become best friends?” Got a CR-800 in my shop been using for years with my ‘78 Advents, been threatening to move it inside to try with some new speaks…got no choice now😉
Hi Randy love the Program Would you consider reviewing the NHTC1 Bookshelf speaker the retail For $250 each and are the uccessors of the NHT Mini monitors Thank you Randy for your honest reporting
Always love a speaker shootout! Also, I have a recommendation. Ascend Acoustics CMB 170 bookshelf speakers, recently picked up a pair and have been loving them. They are a direct to consumer company based out of California I believe. Check em out! Cheers
Hi Randy, through your (and others') advice I bought the Aiyima A07 and Wharfedale Diamond 12.2 (you can get them for around 300 euros in EU, which is hard to beat) and I couldn't be happier! Thanks. Combined them with the SMSL M200, which seems a good match so far. Totally agree with your comment that the Wharfedales are, above all, very neutral. Bad mixing and poor recordings do come to light. On the other hand good quality music shines. This speaker has such great mids and can produce tight, punchy kickdrums! In a future video could you give advice on how to improve room acoustics and about speaker placement? Basically how to get the most out of your system (in a cheap way)?
I have stereo Rels for my stereo Q acoustics 3020is and if you thought they had a warm sound before, then try hooking each of them up to each of their own rel t5i subwoofer...WOW!
When I originally purchased my 3020i's in early 2020, I did so to replace my aging Eosone bookshelf speakers in my home theater. My initial take was that they were beautiful, well built, and technically proficient but they were missing something. All the reviews I'd seen referred to them as neutral, and I found myself unable to necessarily pinpoint what that something was that was missing. I could only say they were sterile and not appropriate for me as front speakers. I moved them to my rear channels where they have performed wonderfully and went with the 3030i's (and the 3090ci) up front. While still a neutral speaker, the 3030i's had far more depth, bass, and personality and made up in all the areas where the 3020i's lacked. In terms of price, they were also a much better bargain than the 3020i's. Paired with my Denon x3600h and my Hsu VTF-2 MK5 (you need this sub in your life Randy!) it all sounds great. Thanks for your great reviews and comparisons....and as one vet to another your service too!
IMHO 2-channel audio on Denon receivers are absolutely awful ( a tinny bright Digital sound) I even auditioned the Denon 6500 and even though that was excellent multi-channel (movies) when it came to the 2-channel I was not impressed.
th-cam.com/video/8Hz8HIrEnZM/w-d-xo.html Speedwoofer or SVS that Randy reviewed a while back. Between the 2 you mentioned the monolith would be my choice but honestly I would save a little more and get the RSL Speed woofer hands downs!
@@ufarkingicehole which rsl sub are you speaking of? I cant find a 15". The monolith is around $1300 and the klipsch is $800. Thanks and I understand if you dont have time to respond
Hey Randy, wonderful to see the return of the speaker shootout! Quick opinion question for you: If you PERSONALLY, could only choose ONE of these three Klipsch speakers for movie and music listening, which would it be: 1) RP-500m 2) RP-600m 3) RB-61 ii I’m respectful of your time, just a quick 1,2 or 3 will do. Thanks! Love the channel!
My personal taste is the order you have them in. The RB’s moved up the chain for me when they were $250 and the front port was awesome for close to the wall placement
@@cheapaudioman Thanks! I just bought all three in attempt to let my ears do the work. I’m having my own speaker shootout today. Can I afford all three? Absolutely not. Two or One pair will be going back to the store. So your time and opinion means the world to me. #bigfan
I second this. I used to have the 500s, then "upgraded" to the 600s--and ended up preferring the 500s that I sold. There's some missing midrange detail in the 600s (might not be missing exactly, but harder to hear) that was there in the 500s. Since you really need a sub with either one to get to full range, the more balanced 500s are better. BUT, if you can wait until they're on sale for $299, the KEF Q150s are better in pretty much every way. Edit: Since you're doing a shootout today, try to find songs and esp. vocals where you can compare midrange detail.
@@svalbard01 Thank you very much! That was a great reply! I am POSITIVE the Kefs are great, but I am pro dominantly a rock/metal/electronic listener, AND a Klipsch fanboy. It really sounds like (pun intended) the 500m’s are the clear winner!
@@zackwilliams2046 I will say that when it comes to electronic/retro wave... that's actually where the 600s shined. I don't think you can go wrong. Good luck!
Just bought a pair of Klipsch rb- 81 mark 2 speakers for 400€. I knew the dimensions, but they srill surprised me with their size. Maybe the rp500m would have been a better fit for my small apartment...
The Q Acoustic seem like my type in the English Walnut. The white seems too fashionable and might become dated in time. Kinda looks like it belongs on an Imperial Battlecruiser.
Hey dude I would like you to do a speaker shoot out with your favourite 100$, 200$ and 300$ speaker just to find out what you get at what kind of price point
It's a steal at $250. Like more expensive Wharfedales, it's very balanced top to bottom, and is basically the same speaker as the Diamond 11.1 for a lot less money
Just tested the JBL A130... Spoiler they lay waste! in the last 30 days I've tested RP-600M, SSCS5, NS-6490, RB42. I have to say! Awesome! I think the A130 actually have more bass than the RP-600M.
I had 8000f and gave them away..i have the 500s and the m51s in my RV 500s are very balanced I like them better than my bro 3 triangles too I think I like them as much my as my kef ls50...next I'm going up to AUDIOVECTORS
@@cheapaudioman Yes, I've made raised panel kitchen and bath custom cabinet doors. I'd make some Voigt towers (Tech Ingredients). But I understand your point. Most guys under 50 don't know how to change their oil. I single-handedly built my own house.
I think the Goldilocks size, for main/mid/woofer drivers is 6.5”; maybe 6” (?) over 5+” for bookshelf speakers if the enclosure can be a touch larger or deeper. The 6/6.5” can often give very good and better tonal accuracy and listening satisfaction, across frequencies more broadly, and at the same time deliver greater authority across mids and in bass. It might be that this diameter strikes the best balance between power (moving air) speed, and control. Notice how an 8” diver is used much less often in tower/floorstanding speakers- harder to control and bass may overpower. While 5/5.25/5.5” drivers are used much less often in true flagship speakers. Also 6/6.5” main drivers are chosen much more often (default) by the better professional car audio installers in custom/aftermarket/upgrade installs. Here it’s usually seen as the “right” size.

I even auditioned the Denon 6500 and even though that was excellent multi-channel (movies) when it came to the 2-channel I was not impressed.
Which would you recommend the klipsch spl 15" or the monolith 15" thx? Does the klipsch even compete? Thanks in advance
th-cam.com/video/8Hz8HIrEnZM/w-d-xo.html
Speedwoofer or SVS that Randy reviewed a while back.
So out of the bunch you think of jbls are better for the price but not for overall sound quality?
Hey Randy, wonderful to see the return of the speaker shootout!
Quick opinion question for you:
If you PERSONALLY, could only choose ONE of these three Klipsch speakers for movie and music listening, which would it be:
1) RP-500m
2) RP-600m
3) RB-61 ii
I’m respectful of your time, just a quick 1,2 or 3 will do.
Good luck!
RB 51 ii or RP 500 M? FYI the RP 160M's are now $374 @ Crutchfield.
following. I’m interested in this answer also.
RP 500 M
JBL Stage A130 still out class the RP-600M!
Just bought a pair of Klipsch rb- 81 mark 2 speakers for 400€. I knew the dimensions, but they srill surprised me with their size. Maybe the rp500m would have been a better fit for my small apartment...
I like your playlists Randy! Can they be opened in Amazon Music HD? I tried searching for your name but it didn't come up.
They don't seem to sell the JBL Stage a130 in Europe :-(
I found a pair of the Klipsch rp500m for 180 for the pair in new condition
Watching this video on Q Acoustics 3020i's.
Excellent job
The Q Acoustic seem like my type in the English Walnut. The white seems too fashionable and might become dated in time. Kinda looks like it belongs on an Imperial Battlecruiser.
ha
I'm loving the 3050i towers and 3090ci center in the English Walnut. The imaging and detail is really impressive. So pleased.
I have them in walnut and yes, they look classy .
CR 800? I have one of those! Pretty good and love the variable loudness contour!
I’m really enjoying it
Hey dude
I would like you to do a speaker shoot out with your favourite 100$, 200$ and 300$ speaker just to find out what you get at what kind of price point
you gotta use that Sammy Davis Jr voice more often!
What, no play of Love Lockdown to appraise bass?
Doesn’t “ Frogs” have insane bass?
First!
I still hope you get to import a pair of Nubert speakers from Germany, they are great.
Add Heco Aurora series as well.
What about Wharfedale D320 as a potential candidate as best value speaker? Pretty darn good imho...
Looks to be a great speaker for sure
It's a steal at $250. Like more expensive Wharfedales, it's very balanced top to bottom, and is basically the same speaker as the Diamond 11.1 for a lot less money
Just tested the JBL A130... Spoiler they lay waste! in the last 30 days I've tested RP-600M, SSCS5, NS-6490, RB42. I have to say! Awesome! I think the A130 actually have more bass than the RP-600M.
Yep 5 inch drivers on the 500s are there best stuff...
I had 8000f and gave them away..i have the 500s and the m51s in my RV 500s are very balanced I like them better than my bro 3 triangles too I think I like them as much my as my kef ls50...next I'm going up to AUDIOVECTORS
please make song list your using .
Which one of these would be less fatiguing for a long listening session?
Q's
I don't know Randy...can they?
How does this already have a thumbs down?
Ya know, we live in a society!
@@burner8959 it's sad, very sad. To subscribe to someone that you strongly dislike.
Someone incorrectly crossed their left-right channel.:)
@@burner8959
Yeah, “Big Stereo”…they’re upset about him only reviewing the ‘cheap stuff’. 😆
XLS Encore $250 would win?
you'd need a cabinet and you'd also need someone to spend hours to put it together.
@@cheapaudioman Yes, I've made raised panel kitchen and bath custom cabinet doors. I'd make some Voigt towers (Tech Ingredients). But I understand your point. Most guys under 50 don't know how to change their oil. I single-handedly built my own house.
I think the Goldilocks size,
for main/mid/woofer drivers
is 6.5”;
maybe 6” (?) over 5+” for bookshelf speakers if the enclosure can be a touch larger or deeper.
The 6/6.5” can often give
very good and better
tonal accuracy
and listening satisfaction,
across frequencies
more broadly,
and at the same time
deliver greater authority
across mids and in bass.
It might be that this diameter
strikes the best balance
between power (moving air)
speed, and control.
Notice how an 8” diver is used much less often in tower/floorstanding speakers-
harder to control
and bass may overpower.
While 5/5.25/5.5” drivers
are used much less often
in true flagship speakers.
Also 6/6.5” main drivers
are chosen
much more often (default)
by the better professional car audio installers in
custom/aftermarket/upgrade
installs.
Here it’s usually seen as the “right” size.
For those of you that don't know, that tattoo poking out of Randy's sleeve is none other than Ron, from New Record Day.
😂
Copper spun woofer?
Real cheapaduioman would drink out of a real skull. :)
JBL Ruels 👍
I'd like the video as I'm seriously considering the JBL's, but it's at 666 likes so the Slayer fan in me just wont let me do it.
Why was elac left out?
I mentioned in the video
You realize you may be the only one in the world who doesn't think the RP600 is incredible.
Copenhagen 🤘!
Fellow Copenhagen user?
JBL paper cones, better bass texture I think. Good shoot 🔫out, thanks.
Yes, the RP500M can be beat.
The Adam T5Vs beat them.
Im not a fan of tiny woofers and rear ports
A lot of what you say is complete nonsense. You seem to jump back and forth instead of being consistent.
Speaker comparison without any sound samples but only talking? 👎
