    Nice upgrade. I have to agree on the def fill location. We have four of those trucks at work, aggravating too is you don't know its full until it sprays out the fill.

      I should have mentioned that! I stand there listening to see if I can detect when the tube is filling. 😂

    Hey Woodruff. I have a 2012 Duramax love the truck! I wanted to do the led upgrade and in Illinois it’s supposedly illegal. I keep blowing bulbs. The halogen ones don’t last. I did delete my truck and the diesel mechanic said it would actually run cleaner without DEF! Kinda along the same lines the you were saying! Thanks for sharing 👍🏻👍🏻

      Todd if you don’t do the conversion next time and I learned this the 50 dollar way. Use rubber gloves and absolutely don’t touch the bulb with bare hands. The oils from your finger prints cuts life of the bulb by more than half. Then your back outside again changing them lol

    So.. we see the before and afters. What about the steps in between??? How did you replace them? What tools, steps did you use? What could be done easier? What steps to do or to avoid for novices who want to do their own work?

    • @woodruffwoods

    Hi Darrin, nice job & I hope you're doing well.
    Surprised to see that while you have an exponent of the most exquiste German automotive engineering in the garage with the S4 that a USA 2017 truck still uses halogen bulbs... We switched to Xenon around 2009 and to Full LED around 2018 across the Pond for middle class cars and above. Even my basic lightweight Miata has Full LED and adjusts the light beam in corners. I think it's even mandatory right now for new cars in Europe, for sure for the DRL's.
    Second surprise : apparently it is legal to do this conversion where you live? Over here Xenon = mandatory with high pressure jets to clean the headlights together with your windscreen + auto levelling system. For LED the levelling system is sufficient. With your set up, you're going to blind (if that's the correct word in ENG) upcoming traffic with a heavy load in the back or whilst towing. Or light up the squirrels in the trees around your estate 😄

      @woodruffwoods  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Europe generally has more strict rules than we do. I am not sure why GM only recently moved to LED lights. They had done it on other cars but not the trucks.

    Nice upgrade. Make sure to check your low beam alignment. Your lights can be way off with halogen bulbs and no one flashes you but adding LEDs gets you flashed a lot especially if you're not pointed correctly. I think the general rule is top of the beam at 36" high measured 25' from headlight to wall. Check your manual for correct specs.

    • @woodruffwoods
      @woodruffwoods  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great advice! I will check that tonight. I haven't been getting flashed so they are probably ok but good idea to check.

    Are you still running the LED bulbs today? Considering making the swap on my 16, but I’ve seen online some people are disappointed with low beam light output after switching to LED bulbs in the low beam projectors our trucks have (some people even saying the output/beam distance is worse than the halogen bulb). How does your low beam output with the LEDs compare to the original bulbs? Same/more/less distance on light output for low and high? The halogens I have now just are not cutting it, for -$60 this would be an easy upgrade. Thanks!

    • @woodruffwoods
      @woodruffwoods  ปีที่แล้ว

      I am still running those bulbs. I would say that low beam is same to slightly better than the stock bulbs. The high beam is considerably better than stock. If I recall correctly I had to adjust the low beam up a bit to get it right.

      @@woodruffwoods well interestingly enough, a small amount of tint will greatly reduce the glare effect. I had a tint guy tell me to put tint on the windshield of my Corvette and I was like WTH? I used to tint windows and we did a band at the top but never a full windshield. New tint films can be applied to the entire windshield (state laws vary) and you reduce the nighttime glare dramatically. I thought he was pulling my leg and as I age the halos and glares are no joy. Had it done and what a difference. You can barely tell it's tinted at 80% VLT. Federal law is 70% or higher but check your state laws. It's prohibited in Virginia but there's no chance you can tell. I can see much better at night time. You can also have a coating applied to your glasses if you're a fan of tinting a windshield. Eye glass places can either order new lenses or have yours sent off for coating.

    • @woodruffwoods
      @woodruffwoods  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@VASteelersGuy Interesting information. The side and back windows are tinted on the truck but not the windshield as that is illegal in Pennsylvania. I do find that backing a trailer at night is more difficult with tinted glass. Often I just roll the windows down. I also can relate with glare and age. This growing old stuff is not for the weak! LOL
