  • Spotify related artists are somewhat of a mystery, and a lot of artists want to know how to get that 'fans also like' section on Spotify. Another common problem is the related artists are often entirely wrong. So how does this section of Spotify work? In this video i'll give you some tips to push it in the right direction.

    This is what Spotify wrote me a while ago after I didn't understand the relation between me and the Fans also Like section .It’s currently not possible to edit the artists that appear in Fans Also Like as the feature isn’t manually curated. It’s determined by algorithms that use a combination of your fans' listening habits, what’s written about you on Spotify, and music discussions and trends happening around the internet

    Moving on my Fans also Like is a little weird.
    I basically promote my song on FB conversion ads for Spotify.
    Just after running ads for US, UK, AU(main areas for my genre), the section got some famous artists with the same genre. But after running ads for all countries available for Spotify, all the artists on the list disappeared.
    And a few months later (today), the section suddenly got 20 artists. They include some artists who seem not to be grown (less monthly listeners than mine) and a few famous artists. All of them look having the similar genre to mine. And I'm on a list of one of them.

  • @vxd
    @vxd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Another possibility is that people who watch Tom Dupree videos watch yours too because they are interested in music marketing. They then also are more likely to listen to his songs on spotify and yours too. Spotify notices the connection (via Spotify not Web crawling) ..

    could you do a video on actually making the creative for your ads? I really get stuck on this. Also, what do you suggest for someone who has some decent songs on Spotify but they are not performing that well because they didn't promote them that well when they were released?

    • @onyxxproductions8187
      @onyxxproductions8187 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What we did is pull one song down and re-release it as a test run before promoting a new release with Facebook ads. You get all of your playlist, streams and save data but Spotify treats your song like a new release and you get another 28-day Release Radar opportunity. The only main difference is that you can't pitch it to Spotify for Artists for editorial playlists.
      Another approach we are taking this fall is to re-release older songs with a new mix. The song has to be different enough from the original that the algorithm won't see it as the same song. We will likely re-record the vocals and replace some of the drum sounds. It doesn't work to just run ads for older songs because part of the popularity score is the historical data from the first week and first few months after release. It's really hard to overcome that if it's bad.
      Andrew did do a video on how to make the ad creative. You have to look around at the titles of his videos to find it.

    IMO Spotify is prioritizing web crawling way too much. I stopped running ads around Christmas and my FAL reverted to a bunch of artists that are listed alongside me on a songwriting website where I posted music 15 years ago (under my real name, the same name I still use). Totally killed my algorithmic discovery. Took weeks of running ads again to repair the FAL. Spotify support said they also use what you put in your bio, though who knows how much that is weighted.

    • @onyxxproductions8187
      @onyxxproductions8187 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      One factor to related artists (according to Spotify) is what artists appear immediately before and after your songs in playlists. In order to control this, we created a bunch of personal playlists with the "right artists" next to our songs and put them on repeat. It also helps to put a couple of them on your profile, too. We put it on the artist's pick in-between releases.

    • @onyxxproductions8187

      The biggest reason this usually happens is because you used automatic placements and everything is going to audience network. Don't use Audience network. It's all bots. Other than that, we usually only get about 10 to 20% of visits to the landing page to convert using other placements. Some people get a higher percentage only using IG stories.

    Andrew have you ever run into the situation where most of your links clicks come from low cost countries country like India or Mongolia? Is this something to be weary of or do you just omit those countries all together.

    • @onyxxproductions8187
      @onyxxproductions8187 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew has recommended in the past to separate them. On release day, we usually make an adset just for India and other traffic-sucking countries and put a daily limit on it. Any country you see sucking all of your traffic, like 4,000 impressions going just to Vietnam in one day, put it in there. It's worth editing the adset and putting it back into the learning phase to do this because Facebook is learning the wrong thing when this happens.

      I bet it brings you a small number of followers and streams, but I can't imagine its much. There isn't a statistic where you could track this though.

    • @onyxxproductions8187
      @onyxxproductions8187 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably the biggest reason it matters is that you won't have any algorithmic push without it. The "fans also like" triggers the Radio and Radio recommendations (your Radio can show up to people who aren't following you) and Daily Mix plays. It is likely directly connected with Discover Weekly in the sense that you probably won't get pushed by Discover Weekly without a "fans also like" because they still don't know who to send your music to. I think the "fans also like" is a clue that the algorithm has the data it needs to find your listeners, so it's a big deal just for it to show up. It's a step to a bigger audience.

  • @AnderTavys

    • @onyxxproductions8187
      @onyxxproductions8187 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once you hit a certain threshold of engaged listeners, you may just get one related artist. That's all you need to get a radio. It's just your songs and that artist. When we first started running ads, one related artist appeared after we submitted a new song for release. Then it disappeared after the first weekend of the release. Then it came back with the next release and we've had it ever since. We are still hoping to get more. We got a decent Release Radar push this release, so we are hoping we get more artists this time. We didn't have any for a year before all this, so be patient and keep promoting your music.

    • @AndrewSouthworth

    • @onyxxproductions8187
      @onyxxproductions8187 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spotify says one way they do this is based on what songs your songs are next to on playlists. So, if you got on an editorial playlist or even Release Radar or were added to user playlists, and a significant number of times it was next to artists like these, that would do it. You can control that a bit by making your own user playlists and putting your songs next to artists you want to be associated with and then promote it to your fan base and get other people to play the playlist. But your "fans also like" usually won't be super big artists even if you do this.

    I triggered fans also like with about 1,000 followers, 900 monthly listeners, 16,000 total streams and 4,000 total listeners. And I use Facebook ads. One step closer to figuring the algorithm out lmao 🤟

      Thanks for sharing! haha. For my project Murder Nite I think it was about 500 followers, 5-10k monthly listeners and probably about 60k lifetime streams.

      Oh, that's good to know - we got our first one with 250 followers, 100 playlists, and 300 saves but then it left and came back a few times. We currently have 994 monthly listeners and almost 700 followers, so I feel like we're getting close.

      @@onyxxproductions8187 I would definitely say you're almost there assuming it does the same as it did for me. Thanks for sharing super interesting 👍
