    I've spent lockdown binging on tutorials about how to promote your music and this is hands down the best channel I've come across. You're one of the precious few who don't come across like a motivational speaker. Just cold hard data.

    Hey Andrew, I honestly love your tutorials on Facebook ads - I think they're the most direct and clearly explained ones out there for this type of thing. One thing I'm finding difficult to visualise however is the overall order in which a promotion should operate. For example; Do you start with an awareness campaign of certain groups to see who engages the most, then create a look alike from there and continue on or is a cold conversion fine to go with? I imagine it's just lots of practice with tweaking to see what sticks rather than a set order.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks I appreciate that! I try to be as direct as I can :D. So in this case I did run a pre-launch campaign with the Marcel video (shown in my last DistroKid video). I ran it to Post Malone fans, and from the engagement on that I was able to talk to some people and ask what music they like and what artists they think sound like the song.
      That gave me some ideas to use as targets for the. main campaign come launch day, and 99% of the traffic was pushed to a cold audience - for some reason my retargeting didn't perform as well as the cold audience. So the Marcel campaign was basically exploratory, but it did get me a lot of new Instagram followers and resulted in some genuine conversations with people. Research and testing in itself is still pretty valuable even if the retargeting doesn't work out well.
      But every song is a little different. I'm always testing new ideas to see what works, so it really is just lots of practice and tweaking. With experience you get better at predicting and researching though.

    These vids are so good!!! Far too many people doing similar talk too much or want you to buy their products or courses and all that whereas you don't you are so genuine and just wanna help people! Literally giving out gold man!! For FREE. Unbelievable.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Conrad, thanks so much! Glad you're enjoying the videos. While I do also have products and a course that opened for a small batch of beta-testing students last week, and a new Patreon page, I try to give out tons of value for free.
      While I was learning this stuff I was pretty annoyed at how nothing was just laid out for free, everyone had a paywall to get ANY information. So my perspective is give out enough where people could take what I teach and run with it and get great results, and the courses and Patreon stuff is for people to get a more thorough step-by-step process and keep up to date with everything i'm testing.
      Some artists have been able to completely replicate my success with these videos, others need a more guided approach either because they don't know the basics or they just want the full package of knowledge and some of my insight.

    Just wanna tap in and give your community a lil insight on your methods. I've been following along and implementing your methods for my new release for the past two weeks. My new EP that I released last Friday has been able to generate 5k+ streams and counting so far within one week. I've just been added to some more release radar playlist and the numbers are starting to spike. Hopefully discover weekly and editorial playlist are in my future! If you guys are skeptical on his advice or fb ads.. they actually work especially if you want real organic streams/ build your fanbase. I haven't even touched on the increased engagement on my IG or engagement across my other social media accounts... thats just streaming numbers. Just create good music and target your ads properly folks. Keep up the great work drew.

      Hey man, thanks so much for this insight! Glad you've been seeing great results with this stuff. I've totally seen people who are skeptical about this stuff, but when you put good music in front of the right people in the right places its incredibly effective.
      As i've tested this with multiple artists i've seen it work with almost anything. Sometimes its more expensive, sometimes it's cheaper than my own music, but it always works to some degree.

If someone who opens the song with a free Spotify account they can only shuffle play your song. Which means it's gonna put a lot of random tracks from random artist there before you hear your song. But if you put your playlist with your songs they will surely hear your songs. Even if it's shuffle play

    hey dude! thanks so much for your videos - I've watched them religiously this year and they've been so helpful. quick question though - have you ever encountered this method not working? i.e. getting lots of new listeners and not spiking the algorithm? has worked well for us this year and assumed it would be similar on our new single. ads have pulled in around 800 listeners in week 1 and running at about 40% save rate but not seeing much of a spike a week after release.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jonny! Glad they've been helping you out. It definitely doesn't ALWAYS work, or at least not always the same. There are a lot of other variables we can't see, like song skip rates and how long the listener spent on your profile. Typically if a song has over 1,000 saves, over a 50% save rate, and a stream/listener ratio of over 2.5 i've seen it get a Release Radar boost . Sometimes it takes more than that, and sometimes it takes less. I'm sure the amount of playlists users add you to plays a factor as well, and i'm sure how closely the other songs in the playlist are correlated matters also.
      For Discover Weekly i've seen 10-15k streams and a 50%+ save rate to get on it, but other people have told me they got on with less streams and a worse save rate, other times people hit those numbers and still don't get it. Once again, there are a million variables here we can't see.
      Some songs do better than others naturally, so i've found it can be useful to know when a song isn't going as planned so that you can adjust your strategy and consider switching to a smaller campaign, or on the flip side if a song is doing much better to double down and push it further.

      @@AndrewSouthworth Hey Andrew, thank you for such a thorough reply dude! Thank You Andrew. Have been searching for this information for years! Your videos have changed my band's fortunes around. I have a question which I'm sure a lot of us share and would be so valuable. Do you know what the minimal amount of streams in week one is (after release) to trigger the Discover Weekly algorithm and get that boost? We just released a single and got just under 1000 streams in the first week. Great results, but wasn't enough to trigger the algo, so just wondering based on these results how much we'd have to spend to get that extra push. Save rate is in the 60% area, average 2.8 plays per listener. Please like this comment/comment if you have the same question! Good luck people, and thanks again Andrew!

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks! Yeah totally. You need a great song or album to promote for this to be effective, no getting around that!
      The only slight difference i'll say, is that you don't need perfection. As long as the song is at least 80% as good as anything on thats popular, you can promote it with pretty great results. I'm a curator on SubmitHub and I find SO much music I don't like at all thats insanely popular, and I find SO much music I think is fricken fabulous that gets almost no traffic.
      80% is of course just a rough number. The song just has to be good enough to basically fit on a playlist with 'pro-music', and blend in as if it was also 'pro'.

    Thanks for this video Andrew, massively insightful. I'm in the process of setting up a campaign for next Friday. Do you find (as I have) that service like linkfire/feature fm can cause a significant amount of dropoff (sometimes only 50% clicking through) and that it can be more cost effective to link direct to Spotify? Obviously there is the pixel tracking benefit, but I'm not sure if it's worth it if means approx half of ad clicks don't reach Spotify. Really appreciate your videos man 🙌

  • @Labackmusic
    @Labackmusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey Andrew, you are so cool ;) is it more efficient to link directly from ads on platform (spotify, apple music) one ad per platform ? like Lucidious seems to do

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you mean make individual ads for Spotify, and for Apple Music? If so, then yes haha. The Apple Music campaign I show in this video actually has their own videos, the only difference however is it says 'Stream on Apple Music' with the Apple Music logo (following their branding guidelines of course).
      I wouldn't blend them together, you want people to know where you're sending them. Its okay to have them on the same landing page link I think though, like I have on the Hypeddit landing page.

    • @Labackmusic
      @Labackmusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AndrewSouthworth Yes Andrew and Thanks, I think about making individual ads, one for Spotify and one for Apple music... so it links directly to the streaming platform, instead of adding a landing page.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So you CAN go straight to platform with a link click campaign, but you'll get a lot of clicks that don't result in streams. A few months ago I did a campaign, and after $40 of ad spend and like 600 clicks, the song only had like 10 streams. I believe a few accidental swipes and/or bots were the first to 'click' the ad, which caused Facebook to see super cheap clicks and then proceed to find even more accidental swipes and/or bots.
      So be very careful with link click campaigns direct to platform. You can do them safely, but you'll usually want to use a LAL audience, or a retargeting audience to do it. At the very least watch your Live Spotify stream count on the first day to check things are working out okay.

    Amazing strategy as always Andrew! Thank you for sharing
    Just have one doubt regarding Audiences targeting:
    Why did you use different artists on interests (such as Linking Park, etc) instead of using Lookalike audiences from your previous conversion campaigns which tend to be more effective? Is it because this song is different in style from your previous ones? Why didn't you "take advantage" of your previous data collection on your pixel and started from scratch? (yet with amazing results)
    Once again Thank you, x

    Hello Andrew, super interesting video.
    I work in web advertising, so no probelm for me to set up campaigns and such.. but since we want to start some microscopic promotion for my band I have a couple of quesitons:
    - Why would you recommend stories over PPL or Video ads on the FB feed? (I ask because you can use those organic posts as ads, but you can't with stories)
    - Would you recommend pushing a song, a playlist or just the band's profile?
    Of course the best thing would be to test all these options, but our budget doesn't allow for too much experimenting :/
    Thanks a lot
    Andrea

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've actually started using more feed placements as well which can drop the cost further depending on the song, but for a while stories were performing best, and I think its because by default stories are played with sound already on and feed ads the sound is off.
      Typically I push a song when the song is brand new, and in between songs I direct traffic to my profile.

      Right now a lot of my campaigns are break even on average. For example my song Socialize I spent $350 or so in ads and its brought in roughly $350 - I think that song in particular might actually be slightly profitable now, and it still gets hundreds of streams per day with no advertising. But the thing is, if you're breaking even on your ad spend you're essentially growing your audience for free and long term that means profitability. My song Dreaming is getting near the break even point and will likely be profitable in a month or so. My newest song Chains will likely be running at a loss for weeks or even months, but eventually the stream count will grow high enough where it breaks even and then anything after that is just profit.
      When you first start this you'll likely be running at a loss for a while, unless you jump right into selling merch and stuff. Thats why its important to have multiple revenue sources, for me that includes TH-cam ad revenue, SubmitHub curation, Sample Pack sales through my company Genera Studios, and course creation. Your other income sources fund the startup that is your music, until the music itself starts to fund itself.

      Hey Justin, thanks! ToneDen is a great service, but basically they're just doing exactly what I do inside my FB ads directly. You're pretty much paying for the convenience of not having to learn it yourself. SO by default, this method is cheaper if you do it right.
      The performance is pretty much the same, since the ads are identical to how I do mine. However you can't do 'fancier' things like retargeting campaigns etc.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Daniel, thanks! I'm using Hypeddit because they let you embed the Facebook Pixel on the conversion. On the Hyperlink you can embed a Pixel, but you can't use it to track when someone clicks to go to Spotify.
      I've already talked to my contact at DistroKid and recommended they add some type of feature like this, hopefully they add it! Aside from that Hyperfollow is a fantastic tool to put in your social media links, and emails to fans. Its just not as efficient on ads.

      It can be good to do a pre-promotion to get some pre-saves before the album launches, it also helps you do some audience research to find which audiences like the track best. Then when the album launches you'd stop the pre-save campaigns and go to already released links.

    see tracking campaigns with links to Spotify songs, the data from FB is
    WAY higher than that from Spotify. Let's say FB is reporting a thousand
    clicks to a song on Spotify and Spotify shows only 20+ streams of that
    song during that same period I'm wondering what could be happening?
    Thanks!!

      After being in touch with Spotify support that's what they said: "We're afraid that views from third party sites such as TH-cam and other social media pages aren't credited on Spotify." We must missing something, because Andrew clearly got them!

    • @onyxxproductions8187
      @onyxxproductions8187 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Several things can affect that. One is that if the person has the free Spotify account, they can't directly listen to your song on mobile. They can only shuffle. So, poorer countries may mostly have free Spotify accounts. The other is that they have to listen to at least 30 seconds of the song to count as a stream. And, another issue is that many people are reporting that events from ToneDen are not translating to Spotify streams. That was what happened with us. Over 200 conversions on ToneDen and no difference in streams. We are switching to Hyppedit.

    @BraNNueLIFETV 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great job. I saw that you talk to Kyle from indeprenuer. In your ad sets, you focus on one artist, not a bundle. Why did you choose to narrow your audience search?

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Yeah that was a fun talk, he's a great guy and very knowledgable. I chose to do one artist because the audiences were large enough, usually I aim for over 1 million people in the audience. I think in my Hollywood Undead audience I may have had several related artists to bring the total up closer to that 1 million target.
      If you have unbalanced audience sizes in ad sets FB has a hard time properly split testing them.
      The other reason is that this was a weird song, it was very hard for me to think of enough artists to target haha. Even Linkin Park and Post Malone were kind of a stretch. Figured if it went badly i'd adjust, but it went so well I just didn't want to tweak it further.

    • @BraNNueLIFETV
      @BraNNueLIFETV 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Andrew Southworth those are huge audiences, especially post Malone. Did you narrow it down or just left it as is?

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      SO i'm checking now, looks like Spotify and Post is a 10M audience, LP is a 7.5M audience, FOB is a 1.8M audience. So I didn't do a good job of balancing them out apparently haha.
      But it all worked out. I'm constantly tweaking and trying new things. You might find you need a more targeted audience, or a broader audience to make your promotions work. The nice thing is that with conversions FB will continue to optimize, and you can train a LAL audience off of the data.
      So I bet if I just ran my ads to everyone that has Spotify, it would eventually optimize itself into finding the right people at a good price. But i'd probably spend more money in that optimization process.

      In general playlist pitching companies will make you feel like you're getting great results at first. You'll get lots of streams for cheap, and pretty fast. But what you learn over time is that playlist listeners aren't real fans, and they don't often save or follow you on Spotify, and they definitely don't seek you out on social media or join your mailing list.
      So they do have their place when they're legit placements, but in general I avoid them.
