Gotta love Little Ren's priorities. The moment he gets some money, he immediately goes for a questionable plant, weapons and alcohol. Truly a kid after my own heart 😄
Why did I never notice that
I don’t think a water lily is considered a questionable plant
He was choosing gifts to his father, if you think about it, being his father a hunter (a real one, not the hero type) weapons or alcohol are good gifts, but not gifts that a child could just buy 😅
You know, I actually had not considered how it would affect Ren that he got the power that could have saved his parents right after losing them. That is actually a really good catch.
"Experience is what you get, right after you need it most."
I'd be livid
Seeing what Nora and Ren went though as kids always gets to me
Especially Nora! She suffered so much, and still does everything she can to help the people around her and keep morale up. She's my favorite character for a reason!
I cry every time I see this.
Likewise.
@@watsondavis5696 Same
The music that plays after the Grimm leaves and Ren gives Nora the hammer and they actually introduce themselves is the beginning of the song “Boop” from the Volume 2 soundtrack, basically their song. And when you think about the lyrics for the part that played… “Never knew a time when you weren’t by my side | The one thing I could always count on. | Always there for me, you’ve been my family | Even when all other hope was gone.”
good observation Ken...Ren's semblance is Tranquility...allowing him to mask himself or nearby peoples emotions. Making harder for grime to pick targets
You both are basically spot on with Rens semblance it is essentially a negative emotion block and it was also revealed back in volume 3 at the noodle stand when Nora had her rant.
Wait is that why Nora lost color during that moment? I thought that was just for comedic effect.
Seriously?!
Yeah... since she didn't actually calm down and I'm pretty sure he wasn't touching her... I never thought that was it either. But maybe?@@pokeloon15
While I'm not saying you're wrong, because that very well could be the case Ren is seeing Nora's emotions. I like that idea too. But, Neon also grays out when she realizes FNKY lost to RWBY. Ren was clear back in the stands, and it could be Ren's perception of the event, but storywise it makes no sense because the match had nothing to do with him. That was an exchange between Neon, Yang, Weis and Flynt and no one else. Most likely both cases of Nora and Neon are a stylistic choice to show sadness/depression balanced with exuberance, and it coincides with how they are visualizing Ren's semblance.
Blanking emotions of himself and people he is in direct (or indirect) contact with. Creates a virtual invisibility shield from Grimm.
In Season 2, Doctor Oobleck says that Grimm get smarter as they live longer. The Grimm that attacked Ren's village is so old that it's smart enough to want a trophy room filled with weapons of humans it's killed, and has lived long enough to fill that trophy room
Not sure it's a trophy room per-se, more just a safe place to retreat to after its hunts, where it can safely pull out all the annoying splinters those damn humans keep sticking in it.
@@Hawk_of_BattleI agree. Though I never thought about a trophy angle.
Likely a combination of both. The discarding of weapons it was stuck with. Which inadvertently pile up looking like trophies.
@@Hawk_of_Battlebut how do you explain the shields and flags? To me is crearly a throphy room, and a scary one.
@@gohanmoreno7 I agree. The way the weapons were stuck into the ground instead of just laying about as if tossed aside suggests it was done for the purpose of displaying them.
I Love this episode because for the first time we get to see how dangerous and destructive Grimm are. Most of the time we've encountered them was with the trained huntsmen who quickly dispatched them. Seeing how ordinary humans fair in a Grimm attack hammers home how bad it is out there if you are not a huntsman. Also the scene between Ruby and Jaune takes on a whole new dimension after V9 (no spoilers).
I finally had time to watch V9 and... oh god.
@@DraustTrollbaneUS Yeah.
and now you know Ren & Nora's tragic backstory & why they care for each other too deeply
Well we don't get the last piece of Nora's full backstory until volume 8
@@MiosPanties no spoilers for the couples please
@@madhavmandava there were absolutely no spoilers in my comment dude
Rens power effectively makes him invisible to Grimm by completing blocking negative emotions. He’s not invisible to anyone else but the grimm
Oooh, the Nuckelavee… This episode was released the day after I first watched RWBY, and the theories of what this Grimm was were everywhere on TH-cam
Grimm can be animal-like, like bears and wolfs, sure… but some come straight outta nightmares
Or mythology. The Nuckelavee is an Orcadian mythological creature (Northern Scotland, may have roots from Norse mythology).
@@nathanielreik6617 I’m not sure where this originated from, but I think the reactor Khanvolution mentioned reading a comment that said “Beware, beware, the demon of the sea, the Nuckelavee”
@@marieporter9488 Yeah it's a mythological water demon that takes the form of a horse when it comes on land.
Ren, like Qrow's gift is internal vs. external. There are a few other main characters who have these types of gifts. Ironwood for example (as he represents The Tin Man) has the gift of Mettle (pun for metal) and is steadfast in his convictions even to the point of extreme.
But yes, Ren's semblance is Tranquility which can mask the emotions of himself and others nearby and make them 'virtually' invisible to the Grimm.
Best and most detailed backstory in the show.
Ren and Nora are a gem.
So Ren's semblance of Tranquility allows him to mask his emotions, rendering him undetectable by Grimm. He can extend his aura over other people to mask them as well.
Both the fact that negative emotions attract Grimm and the way his semblance works definitely has shaped his personality growing up, making him mask his emotions unintentionally
Finally to this episode! This is such a cool one, seeing the history of Ren and Nora. I can't wait for next week. That roar...yeah, this is gonna be good.
There are really two moments that I love in this episode.
1 - The discussion between Ruby and Jaune.
We see their friendship very well here, Ruby had already given Jaune a pep talk in volume 1, now he is doing the same. But above all, we see that the two care about their friends, Jaune is worried about Ren and Nora (and after losing Pyrrah that's understandable), and Ruby is worried about everyone. She tries to carry the world on her shoulders alone, even though she is the youngest in the group...
2 - The meeting between Ren and Nora. Well, rather, the moment where Ren saves Nora. It's already adorable that he gives her a hammer, which will become her weapon in the end, but it's especially the addition of "Boop" in the background that makes it even cuter.
In this regard, I always find that the shot where we see Nora from a low angle when they are both at the top of the mountain (before she finds the den), does her particularly justice. I find her magnificent in this passage, and the low angle would almost give the impression that we are seeing her through Ren's eyes, which would make everything even cuter imo.
The episode that makes Nora's obsession with Ren understandable
So to just give you a heads up with Grimm, you have most Grimm that are based off animals, BUT be careful with Grimm that are based off of fairytales specifically, Grimm Tales. You’ll see pretty soon that are the ones to really FEAR
So you may have noticed and others may have pointed it out already but the song in the OP relates not only to the characters and their stories but is also an expression of CRWBY processing their grief over losing Monty Oum, their dear departed friend and leader.
Fun fact; One of the 3 bullies is KaiserNeko, one of the main guys at TeamFourStar.
boop playing in the background when Ren gave Nora her hammer was a great detail.
Ren's personality could also be due to immense self training to try and make his power stronger in case he needs to call upon it again, but yes, that level of trauma leaves a nasty lasting effect.
“She’s dressed all weird”….implies Nora is a refugee from another Kingdom, possibly Mantle or Atlas.
Fun Fact: The knife Lie Ren gets from his father seems to have inspired his weapon. Similarly, he gives Nora a wooden mallet that might have inspired her weapon.
Lie Ren follows a name custom that’s a hybrid of Asian and Western styles. Lie is his first name but he goes by Ren. Only family members or intimate partners would call him Lie. Even Nora still calls him Ren, his family name.
It feels interesting to see Ren and Nora’s flashback as it seems to show some interesting chemistry that the characters have been through till now having more closer.
Also I am surprise you two didn’t know about Hazel as he is the muscle in Salem’s forces as you might got to ask “Why is he there?” moment. And how does Ozpin know him from the past.
With all that said, the Grimm is going to be one scary monster that brings chills down the spine. As it feels like Halloween is coming early when they shine on the series. I hope it won’t scary anyone who is a scaredy-cat.
This was my favourite post-Beacon episode until the mid point of Volume 6.
Ren’s semblance is emotion masking, you see him use it on Nora during her mini freak out in V3C1 too, hides you from fear-seeking Grimm.
Yeah, y'all are pretty spot on with how Ren's semblance works. He can calm emotions and thereby hide himself and others from the Grimm. He has limits on the number of people and/or his range of effect though
Yes REN’s semblance allows him to mask emotions which essentially makes him and whoever he’s using his semblance on basically emotionless and invisible to grim. Really cool how you two caught onto that. Most people do not so that’s very cool that you guys did
All your observations and deductions thus episode were on point no notes needed. Love these episodes
Another KaiserNeko (DBZA) cameo in this episode, as the tall bully picking on Nora, the one who says "I didn't see you pay for it, thief."
Told you you’d need tissues. Yeah, this episode is definitely another solid punch to the feels, even if it does provide some much-needed and long-awaited backstory for Ren and Nora. Plus, you’ve now seen more hints of one of the creepiest Grimm in the series: the Nuckelavee (12:27).
Speaking of which, the lair scene (17:33) is an homage to one of the favorite movies (which is based on actual events): The Ghost and the Darkness. If you haven’t seen that one yet, I highly recommend that you do. It’s well worth watching.
4:22 I guess you don’t remember him after so long? That was Hazel, another member of Salem’s court. He’s on his way to deal with Adam and the White Fang.
10:37 Good callback to Volume One. Only with the roles reversed. Now it’s Jaune’s turn to give the pep talk.
14:39 Exactly. That’s Ren’s Semblance. Calming Emotional Energy.
see its moments like this why RWBY fans have a problem with RWBY haters. we all know on both sides there are extreme people that can never see the other side buuuuut its hard not to get mad at the other side when you have moments like this and haters still go off. love the videos and keep it up.
Ren's semblance mask emotions, making you invisible for the grimm
That instrumental of Boop in the background as Ren gives Nora the hammer makes me feel things man.
I had tears in my eyes when I first watched that scene! So touching!
- Courage is not the absence of fear, it is acting in spite of fear.
- Grimm are attracted to negative emotion (like fear). Ren's Semblance surpresses/blocks emotions, so the Nevermore couldn't sense the presence of lil' Ren&Nora.
- The big bad Grimm is based on a mythological monster from Celtic Mythology, and yes, it's a scary MF'er.
And that ladies and gentlemen is why Nora loves using the hammer XD XD
Fun fact - the Grim from that village is actually based on the Nuckelavee, a massive, evil monster of plague and rot from Scottish mythology.
Ren's backstory actually helped inspire my own writing. I have a character named Bjorn in a novel I am (attempting) to write and his backstory is similar only that I merged Loki's children (Fenrir, Jormungandr, & Hel) into one big monster and it effectively did the same thing to him as this Grimm did to Ren.
Ren is up there with my favs of RWBY. He is a fantastic character.
Wait til you hear the explanation of Rubies semblance. 😏 They actually explain it later, It's not just speed.
Goddamnit, the acoustic version of Boop is getting me too GODDAMNIT
Its always a good day when these two post!!!
The melody playing when Renn gives Nora the hammer is from a song called "Boop". It's the Renn and Nora ship song.
*INTRODUCING*
- Li Ren
- An Ren
*SEMBLANCES*
- Ren's Tranquility (masks intense emotions, for himself and/or for others)
- There's certainly more to Hazel than meets the eye - someone that Ozpin himself dreads, but is also willing to go out of his way to help some boy he only just met.
- So...remember in Volume 3 Chapter 1, when Nora was ranting about "the worst that could happen" and started turning gray? Yeah, Ren was trying to becalm her with his Semblance.
Super happy fun times talking about dead Parents...the magic of RWBY ^^
You guys got it regarding Ren’s semblance! He can mask emotions in himself and others! Makes himself and others nearly invisible to Grimm since they sense negative emotions.
Hoooo boy! I'd forgotten how fantastic this episode is! That setup from the monster lair is terrifying. Love the realisation of the hoof prints after all this time. Excited for the last leg of this season :D
The Grimm lair that is also a trophy room is scary when you realize how old that Grimm must be
The machine spewed out a train ticket not money. Money looks kinda like credit/gift cards in this show.
That Grimm that you saw is based on a Scottish legend. I never remember the name, but I remember it's something like Nickelback. Watch out or Nickelback is going to get you!
If you look at the movement of the trees, Ren & Nora just missed the Grimm leaving its lair by mere minutes if not seconds. And judging by the direction of movement revealed by the tree canopy, it’s honing in on Ruby, Jaune & Qrow in the ruined village below, drawn to Qrow and Ruby’s negative emotions.
So, Ren's Semblance is called Tranquility. It allows him to mask the negative emotions of himself and those around him, meaning Grimm could lose track of their location or lose interest
The story of how Mulan meet Thor
Yeah Ren is actually his last name and Lie his first. I can see why people would use the family name. I mean Lie is a little strange
His using Ren is also super interesting from a character perspective too; Ren prefers to be called by the name of his family than his personal name - something that in Japanese culture (where his last name come from) is used to denote emotional distance, and also screams some kind of depersonalization; that Ren prefers to be called by his family name rather than his own because he's living for the sake of carrying his family's memory/wishes out into the world rather than for himself, or that more depressingly he might use the family name because he wished he'd died instead of them...
=(
And for more fun facts: Ren means 'lotus' in Japanese, a flower often associated with tranquility and detatchment due to it's use in Buddist symbolism and stories, while Lie in Chinese is written with the character meaning 'ardent or passionate', and when both names are written as chinese characters together they read as 'huntsman' so even in his name's meanings it's all about Ren wanting to be calm/have others refer to him as calm instead of the passion that makes up who he is, so yeah. He has one of the coolest, most fitting names in the series XDDDD)
At first it sounds useless, the ability to mask and calm strong emotions, but in the RWBY universe its so powerful to remain undetected by Grimm.
Ren has reawakened his aura and his semblance that he has. His resemblance is to calm to whoever hold his embrace so the grim will not sense their fear. They gonna fight a boss battle grim to be one of the legend from Scotland. It's terrifying beast are the most popular to all Scottish's heart. They say they were weak against water. I don't know the name but similarly to centaur but terrifying by nighttime
There are some grim that are stand alone called "leviathans", and some that are mutant types called "Alphas" these on there own can be a powerful threat as a single monster... and the den that nora and ren found has clearly destroyed multiple villages on its own, amd now its headed towards Ruby, Juan, and Qrow.
Aura and semblance tend to be activated by stress. Apparently they can be activated at the same time. Ren's semblance masks emotions, which in this case means the grimm cannot sense the fear that typically draws them. It's also probably why he's so chill most of the time.
Makes you wonder if a semblance is completely random or not. Yang's semblance kicked in during her first haircut, which seems completely random... unless she *wanted* to burn down the hairdresser's when it was triggered, which is certainly a possibility! On the other hand, there may be enough evidence that one's semblance is whatever someone needs at the time. I imagine the huntsman academies have a lesson on this sort of thing; Aura/Semblance Theory, or some such.
so rens semblence to clarify its a nulification of emotions like a meditative state and grimm can only sense negative emotions but with rens ability is makes it so there isnt a emotion to sense
This was a beautiful backstory for Nora and Ren, but I seriously wasn’t ready for the scream at the end or the next episode the first time I watched it. It’s so well done. Can’t wait to see how y’all react to what comes next…🙏
Also Ren’s Semblance let’s him mask emotions atm so it comes in handy against the Grimm.
You are correct about your assessment of Rens semblance. With it, he can dampen the negative emotions of himself and those around him, essentially making them invisible to grimm. In any other setting, this would be a largely useless power, but in this world, it's an incredible ability to have.
Also, not sure if you caught it, but there's a very distinctive change in the music when Nora and Ren are under the house as the danger passes, and a few notes of a certain song you've heard before begins to play. I'll let you guys figure out which one.
Also also; it's a little darker now you think about it, but Nora is one of the shortest main characters we've met, and we've seen before just how much she likes to eat. Now we know she was literally abandoned and had to feed herself on scraps. It... clearly did a number on her. Also Ren is a noted cook, now we know why.
I don’t think I’d call Ren brooding… I’d say he was more repressed maybe? Personally, I expect it’s a mix of his long term use of his ability and the importance of him not getting too emotional… If it’s just him and Nora most of the time, maybe outside of the kingdoms, keeping emotions in check would be a vital survival skill when emotions attract Grimm… I think that’s probably why he tends to act this way more now.
Time for the best episode of Volume 4
10:30 to 10:40 makes me the this is the reason why Jaune & Ruby should be shipped....but fans can outnumber anything at any moment
Please finish this I know it's a lot but your reactions are the best for RWBY ❤
I don’t remember what the grim is based on. I do remember that it was a real monster in folklore though.
Ren semblance dampened emotions for him or anyone close enough to him, when active the grim can't focus on them and generally confused about what they are seeing, the down side is it's only useful fighting grim and useless fight humanoid and animals
Well I picked one hell of an episode to catch up on.
RenNora 4 Lyfe
Aww man, I didn't recognize there was an instrumental reprise from "Boop" in the scene where they were kids. Now I'm a large man kinda fighting back tears.
Time stamp?
15:37 is where I caught it, listen to the strings
Yes you are correct about ren
Wanted to let you guys know that your RWBY reactions are a part of my weekly routine now. I always look forward to sitting down after work to watch a new episode.
This episode always makes me tear up. Ren's father's last words to him, him and Nora meeting, it's one of my favorites.
I honestly what Beth said is true I been through something like that it took me a long time to break out of that but man the Grimm you are about to see is one of my favorite designs
Ahh the nucklevee
Poor ren and nora
Not really a "shield" more like emotional camouflage.
Hella, been waiting for this one
Renora
You know, RWBY gets a lot of flack - and admittedly deserves a lot of it - but then an episode like this comes around, and keeps me from dismissing it entirely.
Ren's backstory, on paper, is literally the most cliched heroic backstory ever, but the *execution* of it was just *so* well-done. Something as simple as that moment of Ren's father saying "Your mother and I love you," was simply elevated by the shot composition, the musical score, and the performance from the voice actor.
Very simple, but *so* well-executed.
First
