So Salem wanted to have a word with Tyrian because this is the first she’s heard that Qrow survived his so-called fatal poisoning.
Weiss’s airship pilot originally had dialogue referencing his husband back home, but the writers decided they didn’t like the idea of the first “outed” character in their show immediately being killed off.
Now we see one of Salem's greatest advantages: long-range communication. The Cross Continental Transmit System is down and sending a message from one kingdom to another takes hours or days by aircraft or ship (assuming they don't get intercepted by Grimm). But Salem has real-time communication with her operatives and can therefore coordinate faster then our heros.

I just want to point out that Weiss being happy with herself and smiling after defeating the lancers was adorable.
You talk about how they do a good job of making Adam unlikable, but they do an equally good job of making Salem intimidating. Just this discussion with Leo is enough to understand that she has instilled fear in one of Ozpin's close friends, so much so that he turned his back and betrayed him... While remaining calm, calculating and almost "sweet" in her way of speaking, “Mommy” Salem is definitely a villain who leaves an impression, without overdoing it.
She’s a good villain for sure, we just wish we saw a bit more of her and look forward to learning more about her 🙂
This episode made Hazel one of my favorite characters. More than a one-dimensional character. “Nobody needs to die tonight…”

While volume 5 may be my personal least favorite volume the queen lancer fight always gives me chills. Also like how you noticed the use of the second half of This Life Is Mine from volume 4.
Wasn't happy with V5 early on on first view. But I've since then come to really respect the volume. (Especially when compared to others.)
If for nothing else, favorite character to see for me was Raven.
I’m still SO mad about Sienna. They could have done so much with her as a character, and instead they just killed her in the same episode she was introduced

To make matters worse, she also served as an ideological middle ground between Adam and Ghira, and without her and her perspective, the Faunus arc loses some critical nuance. I love RWBY, but Sienna's death is the worst scene in the show.
I agree. When I first saw the episode. It was a bit upsetting that she was taken out in less than half episode after introduction. She was a very interesting character with a cool design.
There was problems with the VA, she has fame to be so hard to work with.
She literally exists for 5 minutes in the episode I timed it once.
Great reaction! I like what you said about us now being “on the highway” with the show. There are quite a few people who hate everything about the show after volume 3, but I personally love the later volumes for that reason. We get to see more of the world and how the team acts when facing new places and trials.
Hazel is distinctly different among Salem's henchmen.....he's weirdly moral at times....unlike Watts (cold, calculating) and Tyrian (psychopath).....
Hazel is the kind of antagonist I love because not only can be be reasoned with, but characters like him, make you quetion if he has a good point.
I’ve described Adam Taurus multiple times as a Vergil wannabe. They even look similar in design.
Raven is the actual Vergil of this show, funnily enough.
That knight scene, also one of my favorite scenes in this show.

Fact 1 Much earlier in production, the White Fang scene in this episode was originally planned to be the opening scene of the Volume. However, they realized that it would have given the wrong tone for the Volume and moved it.
Fact 2: The battle against the Lancer's in the skies of Lake Matsu was the biggest set by the time Volume 5 was made.
"given the wrong tone"??? WtF? Given the fact that our heroes eeked out 1/2 a win vs the Fang & didn't capture any of the main villains, that White Fang scene would have been perfect to set the "tone" for that Volume. Once again, Rooster Teeth's writing staff _utterly fails to read the room._

We dig it. Not an opening song that we dislike, though this one isn’t one of our favorites. They can’t all be the favorite though 🤗

Hazel wasn't afraid of the White Fang at all, despite how outnumbered he was (so far as he knew), so you have to wonder just how tough he is. I like that he's clearly not into the violence when it isn't needed. "nobody needed to die today"
I appreciate the dynamic between Watts and Cinder here, with him essentially mocking and teasing her over her injuries in a condescending tone, and then his immediate irritation that she can speak again. It's great imo

- Second vehicle-based battle in RWBY, and far more mobile than the Sea Feilong fight.
- Nah, she probably just wants to "motivate" Tyrian once more.

To answer your question Beth, it's Yang...she's subtle as a freight train, she trying very hard not to be buuuut we should all know how things are gonna end when it comes to Yang.
I'd love it if you two could react to episodes more often, like either twice a week or releasing two episodes at once. There's a lot of material in this season and especially the next and I'm dying to see you get through it.
I think it's better they continue updating just one video each week so that when (or if) vol 10 gets greenlit, they can go straight into it after vol 9 without any waiting (or at least that they wait as little as possible) also I enjoy the fact that I'll have these reactions to look forward to for more than a year^^

@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 I definitely get it, that there will always be clamoring for more content, and I do hope my comment didn't seem like that. But there's just so much meat in this and next season and the episodes are short and it just increases the anticipation that comes with wanting you two to see certain revelations, or particular episodes and events.
I'm always grateful for whatever time you can make to do anything of these reactions and share them with us though. 🙂
This episode had me revisiting This Life is Mine. I had not realized that it is Mirror Mirror Part III. White trailer (I), season 3 (II), season 4 (III). Red Like Roses part III dropped in Season 9, so that was a lonnnnng wait.
I loved how Weiss was controlling the knight, to me, that show us an idea of how would Weiss fight if she was as phisically strong as she is as a support wizard-like party membrr and that is really cool.

I like how when Weiss summons the Knight the song plays of her standing up stronger :D "A shame it took so long" the beat and the words give the feel of Weiss herself telling people that she can stand on her own two feet and be stronger! This feels like a nod of Daughter takes after her real dad who stood up and earned though hard work everything he wanted to do.
Seems like this part is the volume is going to be the icying on the cake out there. So que more dangerous path ahead and it might be some speechless moments 🫥
season 5 and 6 made weiss my favorite character
I honestly hope you guys pay attention to the changes in Yang's mom's voice when they meet. It's a decent piece of voice acting and the situation is honestly pretty messed up without "Protagonist Blinders" on. Especially when you consider how big of a change Yang goes through when comparing volumes 1-3 to volume 5.
I love this season specifically because it shows how resourceful and strong everyone has become on their own. As team rwby they really grew from the first season and it really shows in this episode with weiss. Ruby and Blake have assistance but they're still really strong and way better than they started out. But Weiss and Yang really show just how strong they've become after the fall of beacon
Awe yeah, season five! This season has hands down my favorite theme song. It's what always comes to mind when I think of rwby. Glad you're enjoying the show! PS, what happened to your reaction to episode one of season five?

Hey Ken and Bethany I don't know if anyone has told you this yet but the character Arthur Watts was voiced by Christopher Sabat who is the voice for Vegeta. I just thought you two would love to know that since you both really love Vegeta.
Weiss's knight stand by my accounts, is, and will always be known as White Wedding...the boarbatusk is obviously Warpigs.
Easily one of my top 5 songs from the entire series. "...rip of a limb, strike me with bolts of lightning... the battle seems unwinnable, but all we needs a miracle..." It's such a good power song.
(Edit: was going to put a really funny quote here, but it would technically be an obscure spoiler. Suffice to say, I enjoy Weiss versus bandits.)

Im happy to see you guys make it to vol 5 i love every volume of rwby but alot ive heard dislike volumes 4-5 and sometimes every volume after 3 but personally too me i love volume 4-5 because of alot of things like the music for example and how much crwby has put into this show after montys passing and it sucks that alot of people hate the show because they claim its no longer in montys image or whatever, which i personally disagree. but all ive gotta say other than that random ramble just wanna say is that im gonna enjoy watching the rest of your journey in the next volumes and i may comment here and there but until then great episode reaction, love you twos commentary and thoughts❣️🌹

Fun fact...well not so fun because I liked Sienna
There is a reason why Adam went from 0-100 when it came to taking out Sienna
There were a lot of people who wondered what Sienna's semblance was and the Mobile game (That's now out of commission) said that her Semblance was called "Grudge", this basically made her stronger when going up against opponents who have their aura broken or weakened...add that to the fact that she is the High leader for a reason would make her dangerous
A lot of people don’t like V5 but honestly it was my favorite volume when it aired. I found it so much better than 4… with its own share of problems but I liked what we did get more. So I’m looking forward to what you think by the end of it.
Anyway, the Queen Lancer fight is fun because we’ve never really had aerial combat in Rwby before. Plus, getting to see how much control Weiss has over the knight is so cool.
Love that the same episode where Salem said she didn’t want to waste people that could still be useful, is the episode where Adam kills Sienna to further his own goals. Sienna, you were amazing for the five minutes we had you. You will be missed. Such a cool design, such presence. Alas.
Now the real drama is starting to form. Ready to cry?

While Volume 5 certainly has flaws, I personally don't understand why there is so much disgust by large portions of the Fandom for it. There are a lot of twists and turns, good character growth, a maturing by the team, and a number of sequences of drama.
Ah well, it's like watching a Food channel. Too many elitists (foodies) nitpicking BS when for the majority of the world a dish tastes good despite their opinions.
Not the biggest fan of the Ice Queen, but if her theme comes on during a fight, i already know how it's going to end and i hope I'm not on the other side.

Hazel is a hate and love character for me. Scenes like this episode and the train scene in Volume 4 really make you see an interesting dynamic in him thay doesnt make him seem like a bad guy. Other scenes can be....iffy. but i definitely think context is key and thats something that is really good in how the show approaches it for better or worse with its release. Parts of him this volume i thought were so unnecessarily dumb and interactions with other characters i also thought were dumb until the show treats it like we only got one part of the story. I can definitely see how critics would see this as a sort of workaround but in a way as a day one viewer and critic myself i have to disagree. Youll see a lot more as time goes on but i definitely think the way they eventually tie worldbuilding and character plots together not only makes sense, but recontextualizes how I initially viewed certain characters. It even makes you realize some characters are polar opposites of others using really tie jerk sweat drip methods despite trying to do good.
The way they killed off Sienna Khan is so so frustrating. It’s breaks all of the canon of the show; she just had 0 aura protecting her for no reason, she’s meant to be a HARDCORE fighter, and there’s no possible way he caught her off guard, but she dies in a single hit in a single scene where she’s sitting there staring for most of it. Annoying 🙄 (yeah yeah “VA this and that” so what)

Volume 5 is very good, but every other volume is better, so it is technically the worst, there has to be a worst. For me, volume 6 was the best until volume 9 usurped that spot.
Weiss so innocent here. "What we should have done in the first place" indeed. The has to consciously know that most of the population isn't the same sort of "try to help everyone" that those who become huntresses are, but she still acts like she thinks this small-time smuggler would go out of his way to risk getting caught and/or killed to assist someone else.

I've been waiting for a newer upload to talk about this, but one of RWBY's biggest failings as a show is how it handled the White Fang. To put it in mildly rough terms, its the epitomy of (as a white person myself) white uninformed middle class dudes writing what they think is the right way to handle protest and systemic oppression; peace good, violence bad, with no nuance whatsoever. It can also be taken as the societal misunderstanding of what the Black Panther Party was like, when in actuality, they were a self defense group against police overreach against black communities.
The Faunus Oppression is never tackled in any satisfying manner, the White Fang are painted in as bad a light as possible, never being shown attacking the "necessary targets" that woman spoke to Adam about in that scene around the 14 minute mark, and are just portrayed as common bandits and pillagers in the show's timeline.
Whether you like the show or not, I think it greatly mishandled the White Fang storyline altogether, and while I hope you guys continue to enjoy the show, I hope you've learned a bit from this storyline and my comment here, if only as a curiosity.
Addendum: They make the White Fang into a largely Faunus supremacist group, which is similar to how people view BLM and similar groups due to misinformation and lies spread about them. Yeah you can say its just Adam and his corrupting of the group, but again, they never show the good side of the WF enough to truly make the WF a complex, interesting group. They're just another bandit group at this point.
I think it’s too early to get any feedback from DND on that topic at this point, but this is at least something that CRWBY themselves agrees with you on. It’s not surprising that it became much less prevalent in the story over time.

Of course, thats a given, but they still could have done better showing Sienna and the WF's good side overall.
Actually, I think it pretty well reflected the Peace Marches of MLK in the 60s vs the assassination of MalcolmX by rivals, without getting too one to one political. You can go too far dragging out this element of the limited time with the story and overshadow the main RWBY plot vs Salem.
And this is why I hate Adam more....back stabbing coup and didn't even show real skills.....and it was seana khan who supported Adam before the attack on beacon
Adam gets results and results matter most.
