My theory is that the woman is Pyrrha’s mother and that she recognized Jaune from the tournament footage. I also like to think that Pyrrha sent messages home about the cute boy she liked and the rest of her team. Her mother probably figured that Jaune could use some closure so she chose to talk to him about everything since they both loved her daughter. But she didn’t feel up to talking to the rest of the team, so she left.

I wonder about the choice to animate the atlas air ship flying over head as Jaune leaves. Maybe that's just there to give him the idea to acquire a ship. Or (reaching I know) the ship is Neo and Cinder that have a head start on them. And a piece of Pyrrah is attached to Cinder and resonating with Jaune's presence at her statue. Pyrrah's essence was briefly merged with Fall Maiden before cinder took it all. And I still believe a piece of her is in cinder. I theorize the Maiden power transfer works similar to their father/creator (Ozma) reincarnation, and memories or essence are transferred as well. Other theories about this moment would spoil later volumes. However, Rwby has proven to be eye opening 😮 and shocking when re watching with the foreknowledge of later chapters. Example: the architecture of Beacon (likely chosen by Ozpin in a previous life) is an homage to the castle that imprisoned Salem. Is this because its where he found and rescued his Love? Or because it psychologically diminishes Salem to such an extent that even when the school falls and is over run by Grimm she refuses to set foot on it to search for the Fall Maiden's Relic?

Jaune's sister doesn't know the scope of what they're dealing with. So her attempts to be uplifting were well-intended, but not sufficient because they haven't told her everything.
Pyrrha's mother would have at least recognized Jaune from the tournament if not off-screen communications with Pyrrha and pictures of her teammates at Beacon. The same voice actress for Pyrrha played her mother in this one.
As Jaune is looking up at the statue, an Atlas airship is flying overhead, which is a nice touch for a little later, when Jaune mentions stealing one.
Emerald is aware Cinder is alive.

I’ve said it before but this is probably my favorite episode of RWBY that doesn’t have a fight. Really good character work here from Mercury’s backstory, to Tyrian’s maniacal threats, Juane and the Mystery Woman’s interaction and finally ending with Ruby’s hopeful speech. There’s not a scene in here that isn’t peak writing in my mind.

It’s all but confirmed that the mystery woman was Pyrrha’s mother, even used the same Voice actress, and from what they have told us this scene was one of the hardest to make line wise because the VA kept tearing up and actually Broke down by the end of the scene. I myself cannot watch this scene without crying a little. But the cool thing is, Pyrrha’s mom would have known Jaune and Nora and Ren because she would have been told all about them by Pyrrha, and even seen them on the tournament battles. She would have known how special Jaune was to her daughter and is why she didn’t question him here. It’s why she said what needed to be said. It was closure for both the Mom and Jaune. Not to mention he was literally wearing Pyrrha’s sash and some of the metal on his armor. This scene was painful but also perfect and a bit on the Healing side.❤

I really like the beginning of this episode with Emerald and Mercury. I know you guys since volume 3 just see him as a jerky asshole but finding out a little of backstory growing up with a abusive/ alcoholic dad (Mercury brought up back in volume 3 that Qrow smelled like this dad after a long day i.e booze) and that he stole his semblance it kind of explains why he's the way he is. As well as continue the parallels with Yang. Both lose limbs and while Mercury has daddy issues, Yang has mommy issues. Also give him some credit that he's been able to go toe to toe with people with crazy powerful semblance without one and even gave them some trouble a few times.

    • @nikolajdons1282

I really like your parallels between Mercury and Yang. I would add that Yang had her loving and adorable little sister to take care of. This gave her the opportunity to be a better mother figure by raising Ruby better than Taiyang and Raven. They were both very absent, one more than the other, but Yang knew she was loved. I don't think Mercury had somone to share his feelings and pain with. When he killed his dad and was recruited by Cinder, he just traded one controling person for another. Like Tyrian said, he dose not know anything else.

not to mention the contrast that, up to volume 3, Yang relied rather heavily on her semblance to win most/all of her fights, as Tai pointed out in volume 4 and as was generally observed, whereas Mercury has had to rely on weaponry and pure skill because he doesn't have a semblance anymore (still possesses aura to my knowledge, but no semblance)

We've seen it on multiple occasions, but she's really becoming more and more of a leader. She is the one who pushes everyone to move forward and even gives them a hand to follow her. I think one of the key details that's easily missed in the Mercury Emerald scene is Mercury's line of "Cinder doesn't care about you. She doesn't care about either of us!" in the middle of his little 'why I'm totally comfy here and not at all in denial that I'm just as terrified as you' rant: Why would Mercury specify himself in regards to Cinder's care unless the idea that she does/doesn't care about him (and Emerald?) matters to him?
(Also side note: There is one thing about Mercury that redeems him for me. He cares about Emerald. If he didn't he wouldn't have told Tyrian to back off from her earlier in the volume, wouldn't bother telling her than Cinder doesn't care, wouldn't be telegraphing his 'swings' here in this episode for her to dodge after she gets pissed and tries to attack him. Mercury can't communicate worth shit, which makes sense given his whole life preCinder was under someone who beat and made him kill people -talking and showing any affection probably wasn't part of that much, but he's clearly 'trying' to communicate with Emerald here and IDK. That helps a lot for me, especially when I think about the specifics of how his kind of trauma would effect his skill set and understanding of 'how the world works').
Additionally we finally have why they're both with Salem established here - Emerald is here out of love for Cinder (they know she's alive btw. Salem told them and Mercury in the background perked up at exactly the same time Emerald did) while Mercury... He claims 'Salem's promised us everything' but when asked to clarify he went on a rant about how his father used to beat him and ingrained 'be strong' into his head so. ...Yeah I don't think EITHER of them are very happy where they are actually, especially not with 'would be all to eager to hunt them down and horribly murder them' Tyrian making it clear he's paying close attention to their loyalties and 'encouraging' them to 'do what makes them happy' while readying his tail stinger... DX
Oscar is quite honestly the bravest and most mature character in the show as far as I'm concerned. Just one little pep talk from Ruby in v5 about using one's fears to motivate one's self into doing stuff least those fears become reality, and bamn he's doing everything he can to keep up with a group that massively outskills him, lashes out at him for things that are 100% NOT his fault, and tries to do everything he can to support them despite the imminent terror of total identity death that's always ALWAYS there for him. *sobs over the farm boi and wishes he would have something nice happen to him for once*

Ken's spot on, Emerald knows Cinder is alive at this point. Salem told her that Cinder needs to be left to "toil in her isolation" until she's made up for her failure to get the lamp. As for Tyrian encouraging them to dissent - I don't know for sure, but I suspect it's just because Tyrian is a sadistic psychopath who enjoys killing people and isn't all that particular about who he gets to kill. Emerald and Mercury rebelling over a crisis of conscience would lead to Salem 'letting him off the leash' to kill the traitors and he relishes that idea.

    Fun Facts
Fact 1: Nora telling Jaune that she heard what he said to Cinder is a callback to "The More the Merrier"; Cinder called him "a failure with a death wish", to which he responded, "If I die buying them time, then it's worth it. They're the ones that matter."
Fact 2: An unfinished clip of Jaune, Ren, Nora, and Saphron walking through Argus was shown on an episode of RWBY Rewind two weeks before this episode was released for FIRST members. On the live broadcast, this clip included some layering issues, such as Saphron walking off-screen through a building or a background character appearing to walk in front of a trash can in the foreground. These were corrected when the RWBY Rewind episode was officially released the next day.

When I saw this for the first time, Qrow's face made me think about a theory that I believe the community had a lot before (and I didn't know it): if we think about it, ruby and yang sisterhood is weird:
    - both physically are just like their mothers
    - rose is ruby's mom last name
    - yang's last name is her father's last name
    - the rest are like in our world: most of the last names are the dad's last name
    - Weiss is special, because of reasons that came in later seasons
    - then, ruby should share yang last name, but they don't
    - if they used the mother's last name, yang should have one like qrow, but it looks like they tried to hide the fact who was her mom
    - if they use our system, they should have the father's last name and have the same one (qrow and raven share their last name, it is obvious they do that)
So it looks like they are trying to hide something in their family. And this is my (and community's, apparently) idea: what if they aren't sisters? What if ruby's dad is qrow? He cares for her more than for yang, he always is watching for her, and we know now a reason why he would lie about it: his semblance. We saw him a lot of times trying to get drunk in order to stop (or at least, slow down) his semblance and avoid the bad luck. Someone with that history, would think that his bad luck could get ruby only because is his daughter. Then he asked his good friend to lie and say she was his daughter with another woman. It's weird, but it kinda fits in the story

As someone who also speculated this early on I respect the view because you are right... it does make sense. It has been relentlessly disputed by all of the creators of the show though.
Also I would just like to say that I don't personally agree that Qrow cares for Ruby more than Yang. Yang gave up her own childhood so Ruby could have one (at least in her eyes thats what she was trying to accomplish) because Tai couldn't. I'm not disputing that Qrow cares for Ruby a *LOT*. Of course he does. He very clearly cares about all of his family quite a lot. While they may not all be his direct blood they are all related to his team... the people he clearly considered better family than the tribe that raised him. And while I certainly agree that Qrow did want to protect Ruby when she left the house after V3... Yang said herself that she *specifically asked* Qrow to keep an eye on her since she felt she couldn't anymore at the time. (We find this out when she confronts Raven and Raven tries to insinuate that Qrow (and Oz) doesn't really care about her or Ruby. Yang disputes it because she has faith that her asking him was enough to know he was at the very minimum making sure she didn't get hurt)

She's essentially had to go cold turkey on Cinder's "love" and I think this is her slowly rehabilitating into her own person again, like being away from a toxic person.

The Fall leaf is sorta symbolic of Pyrrha and Jaune, after she died..the seasons changed, in front of ruby and yangs window two fall leaves fell, and one was covered by the snow, leaving only one showing. and in the next scene a very broken jaune shows up on ruby's doorstep as she is about to leave. earlier when jaune and her were sitting outside at the school before all the bad stuff went down ..two fall leaves came together at their feet when jaune grabbed pyrrha's hand. its sorta been their thing all along. also the song that was sung during the statue scene in this episode is called 'forever fall' and it makes me cry everytime I hear it. anyway Pyrrha was supposed to be the fall maiden before cinder stole her destiny :( ALSO, I have a huge theory about who the fall maiden is going to end up being in the end. I mean..they are bonded jaune and pyrrha, like 3rd or 4th episode of volume 1, she uses her aura to unlock his. and his name is Jaune Arc, which is a gender swapped Jeanne of arc's, and her real name was Jeanne la Pucelle, which in french means Joan the Maiden, and she took a male role in leading an army. which I mean Juane taking the female role of being a Maiden..kinda fits.

    An Excerpt from u/Shockz0rz:
    "Do you believe in destiny?"
We first heard this line from Pyrrha way back in V3C8--"Destiny", appropriately enough--when she was voicing her worries to Jaune about getting into the Maiden-O-Matic pod and having Amber's soul zapped into hers. We find out immediately thereafter that Pyrrha has kind of a strange definition of "destiny": She doesn't believe in any sort of predestined fate; rather, she believes your destiny is something you make for yourself, something you work towards your entire life. (I've had one person tell me that this is closer to the classical meaning of "destiny", as opposed to the modern meaning, where it's pretty much a synonym of "fate". Dunno if that's true, but it wouldn't surprise me.)
And Pyrrha believes her destiny is to protect Remnant. Not any specific person or group; no, Pyrrha thinks big. She wants to protect the world. Initially she thought she'd do that by becoming a huntress; later, despite her misgivings, she thought she'd accomplish it by becoming the Fall Maiden.
Cut to V3C12. Everything's gone to shit. Beacon is being overrun by Grimm, Cinder's put an arrow through Amber's heart and claimed the full power of the Fall Maiden, and Ozpin's just told Pyrrha and Jaune to GTFO before Cinder kills them both. And as the two of them run outside, they hear something that sounds distinctly like a homicidal Fall Maiden flying up an elevator shaft. Unpursued.
And right at that moment, something clicks in Pyrrha's mind. This is it, she realizes. This is what I have to do.
There's no rational reasoning behind it, no particular logic that tells her she will succeed where Ozpin failed. Just...faith. Faith that her destiny, her life goal of protecting Remnant, lies at the top of that tower.
Jaune doesn't get it, of course. That kind of faith rarely makes sense from an outside perspective. She can't explain it; all she can do is break both their hearts with a first--and last--kiss. Then she shoves him into the rocket locker and sends him away for help, and Magnetos her way up to the top of the tower.
The fight that follows, of course, is quite possibly the greatest of the entire show so far. We see Pyrrha, impossibly, hold her own against a fully empowered Fall Maiden. And for just a moment, we believe, and see her believe, that she might win, or at least last long enough for help to arrive--especially when we see that Ruby and Weiss are on their way.
Then comes the arrow to the heel. We all know Pyrrha's based on Achilles; we know she's screwed now. Cinder walks over and starts gloating, but when Pyrrha looks up at her--
She hasn't given up. There's no despair, nor even the slightest hint of uncertainty in her face. She looks Cinder straight in the eye, defiant to the last, and asks her, "Do you believe in destiny?"
She knows she's lost. She knows she's probably about to die. Yet that same unshakable faith remains: she doesn't know how, or why, but she knows that even if she dies here, she will not have died for nothing. Somehow, she will die fulfilling her destiny. Somehow, in death, she will save Remnant.
I don't watch Red vs. Blue--something I intend to remedy as soon as I finish writing this--but a monologue from that show has been brought to my attention for the parallels it has with Pyrrha's situation here.
"There are so many stories where some brave hero decides to give their life to save the day, and because of their sacrifice, the good guys win, the survivors all cheer, and everybody lives happily ever after. But the hero...never gets to see that ending. They'll never know if their sacrifice actually made a difference. They'll never know if the day was really saved. In the end, they just have to have faith... Ain't that a bitch."
I don't know the context for that monologue--something about an AI sacrificing itself, I think?--but Pyrrha's situation and last words are a parallel and a counterpoint to this speech at the same time. Pyrrha not only has no way of knowing if her sacrifice will actually make a difference, she doesn't even know how it would. And yet the sentiments expressed in that speech probably never even cross her mind, because she had that faith. Even lying there, defeated and broken, she still believes with all her heart that this is the destiny she's been working towards her whole life.
    "Yes."
Cinder's one-word reply is almost as meaningful despite its brevity. I wish I could start this off by pointing out that it looks like she's starting to cry as she says this, but sadly it's been pointed out to me that the "tears" are just reflections in her eyes, visible in many other close-ups. ANYWAY! Recall that Pyrrha's definition of "destiny" is pretty weird, almost the opposite of what it's usually taken to mean nowadays. The odds are pretty low that Cinder shares the same definition.
In other words, what Cinder is saying here is the opposite of what Pyrrha meant. She's saying that her victory here at the tower was fate. That everything that happened here--Yang's framing, Pyrrha's accidental killing of Penny, the White Fang/Grimm attack, Cinder's claiming of the Fall Maiden's powers, the fall of Beacon--all of it was predestined, inevitable, unstoppable, and by extension so is her master's eventual victory over all of Remnant.
In agreeing with Pyrrha, then, she's denying Pyrrha's unshakable faith. She's saying that everything Pyrrha has done to try and stop her has been pointless, that her suicidal blaze of glory has accomplished nothing. And immediately thereafter, she tries to prove the point by ending Pyrrha's life then and there.
If only she'd listened to a quote from her creator.
"I believe that the human spirit is indomitable. If you endeavor to achieve, it will happen given enough resolve. It may not be immediate, and often your greater dreams is something you will not achieve within your own lifetime. The effort you put forth to anything transcends yourself, for there is no futility even in death." -- Monty Oum, 2012
I'm sure you all will agree that the prescience of this quote is...a little unnerving, to say the least. But regardless of its relevance to Monty's own life and work, it's the theme that lies at the very core of this scene.
Pyrrha, broken but defiant to the last, is dealt a mortal blow, then reduced to ashes upon the wind. And for a moment it looks as if Cinder was right, as if Pyrrha's faith in her destiny was misplaced, that she has died for nothing.
But there to witness her death is little silver-eyed Ruby Rose, who unknowingly held within herself a power that Cinder, so confident in the inevitability of her victory, never could have expected or accounted for.
If Pyrrha had never climbed that tower, perhaps Ruby would have unlocked her powers eventually. But it would have likely taken far longer--time that Salem and Cinder would use to capitalize upon their victory, perhaps even move upon the other kingdoms. But Pyrrha's sacrifice, at that moment, directly resulted in the Grimm dragon being removed from play, and in Ruby discovering that she is far more powerful than she could have ever imagined. And I suspect that Cinder did not get away unscathed, either.
Pyrrha never got the chance to see her faith rewarded, to see that her death there paved the way to victory. But she didn't need to see. She already knew.

Qrow has been through a lot. He blames himself for Summer's death, Ruby's mom (Volume 4). He carries a picture of his team with beer mug and tear stains on it (Volume 3). All his life he felt like he makes everyone else's life that he's close to worse. It's probably why he drinks all the time, to forget and numb the pain. And after learning that all that he's done to help save the world was futile when he learned Salem is an ancient immortal being just drove him over the edge. His cynicism about the situation just drove him downward since Episode 3 and I can't really blame him for the drinking benders at the apathy house and this city. I'm glad Ruby was able to stand up to him, a person she has admired greatly through her life, and get some sense through to his head.

Thank you for your reaction, it's thoughtful and sincere so I'll definitely (LOL=)) join you on your way to the volume 9 to rewatch one of my favourite series=) I also like your reaction because you don't predict all the plot twists like some other reactors who had watched a bunch of similar series, they are boring=) Just will give some comments with NO spoilers:
Well, Mercury is a d*ck and it's not a big surprise considering his father's personality. But he gives Emerald some shock therapy unintentionally telling her that Cinder doesn't care about them. And this is something she needs I think.
The scene with the monument is one of the most soulful in series, especially with the song Forever Fall on the background. I think you highly likely will recognize this song reacting to volume 6 soundtrack.
Yeah, Oscar is in the most f..cked up situation right now. Besides he knows about all the dangers and obstacles they can meet he has vast fear of loosing his personality. Not surprising he had escaped for a while. He's actually pretty tough for a 14 years old kid, he really deserves some respect.
Can't blame Qrow for his hesitations in Jaun's plan really. His semblance led him to solitude to bring no harm to precious people. The constant solitude led him to alcoholism, this is common case unfortunately. His alcoholism made him vulnerable to Apathy Grimm's effect, so he hasn't recover yet. Though maybe I think like this because Qrow is... how do I say it? The soulmate character in RWBY for me, I guess=)
And Ruby... she is a little red locomotive dragging her team towards the new plot twists. She does it naturally, she truly desires to be a Huntress and protect people, even Oobleck hadn't ask her about her motivation, I think it was obvious for him, cause he's the same according to his words, just in other way. She's incredible cause her personality is awesome but not unreal or fake.

With Rooster Teeth closing & RWBY being sold, we might never get to the end of Jaune's story. We're pretty sure he's going to burn, and Cinder is most likely going to do it. I figured it would happen in the final battle while protecting innocents.

I feel like the Woman speaking to Jaune was maybe Pyrrha's Spirit and this mainly comes from 3 observations.
    1. When Jaune said "She should be standing here" the camera aims at her as she says "She is".
    2. She knew exactly what to say in the right way to snap him out of his depression.
    3. We hear her walking up to Jaune but when he turns hearing Ren call him and he looks back? She is gone yet we never hear her footsteps.
Could that have been her Mom or perhaps an Older Sister? Sure but I like to think it was Pyrrha herself.

Once does not mean always though. The team has gotten through a lot of shit without help from others in the past. Yes, he def saved their asses from Tyrion and even cut down on the Grimm they fought post-V3 (though they were prepared for this). Everyone always tries to bring up this Abduction and forgets the other major fight that season... The Nuckleave (spelling?) that they fought without Qrow (and half the other people present who are equally proficient).
Personally I think the word you should use is that she sounds Naive and hopeful. Because that I agree with. They don't have the best track record but they also have often fought on their own (or at least THOUGHT they were). My only problem with this episode is with the statue, more specifically in how it depicts Pyrrha as this demure girl, rather than as the powerful, ass-kicking warrior we saw her prove herself to be over the course of 3 seasons. It's kind of like in Game of Thrones when Arya says the statue of Ned Stark in Winterfell's crypts doesn't look like him and that it should have been carved by someone who knew what he looked like.
Also, I love moments in any show where the younger generation has to step up and tell the older generation, "We're doing this because you won't, so either get on board or get out of the way."

    • @undeathghost5627
      @undeathghost5627 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

To be fair. This is her hometown and the statue was likely petitioned to go up in part by the people closest to her (maybe her old team if the small schools do that. I dont actually know) so it does make some sense that they would know she was a bit more demure that what she seems in battle. Personally I think the statue still has an air of strength about it that is stronger than the typical "warrior holding weapons at the ready" type statue that typically would be used for someone who was deemed a hero.
