- 2007 2.3l Mazda 5, we are removing and disassembling the oil cooler and oil filter housing assembly. This can be a common problem that can destroy an engine by leaking out all the oil. The leak occurs between the oil cooler and the oil filter housing. Watch the video to see how to take it apart quickly. See Part 1 video to see the leak in action. Part 3 will show you the money saving repair after it's taken apart.
Thanks a lot for your video. Even is 8 years old. It help me to change the gasket in my 2010 transit connect
I just finish 9:30 pm
It took me like 1:30
Thanks a lot.
Great video
Welcome👍
Please Note FIRST!!!!! I had this same issue and mine was leaking worse than what you see in the video. I simply tightened the top bolt on the canister (the 15 mm bolt) and this stopped the leak solved the problem. Be sure to try this FIRST!!!
Funny how an old comment and trick still gets noticed now, I'll do that with everything in the car!
completed this repair with a Gasket from amazon.com p/n LF02-14-700 .this gasket fits the black painted oil cooler only. You will need a 15mm flex head ratchet wrench and a 10mm socket and ratchet for the lower engine cover.I lost minimal fluids by removing only the center bolt 15mm center bolt that holds the cooler to the oil filter assy.then i positioned the oil cooler so i could change the gasket and clean the mating surfaces. Re-assembled and tested within 20 mins from start.part cost with shipping using amazon prime $30.Godbless and happy wrenching! Thanks to you NotoriousJPG!
Did you come at this from above or below? I was thinking you accessed from the top, but after giving that a look I'm not so sure. But if below, how'd you clean the top of the filter housing? You made it sound easy, but it doesn't look so easy without removing the filter housing... which I'd prefer to avoid if possible!
I don't think amazon has the part anymore, the only match is a full cooler assembly.
put the car on ramps ,removed the lower splash guard, then got that top oil cooler bolt loose. The whole thing comes apart with room to reposition the cooler. Then pluck that gasket out new gasket in .Bolt back together and no more oil leak! Work done mostly from the bottom. Its cake have fun!
James Threats _hello there, when putting in both gaskets, did you put any permalex on gaskets after cleaning components?
@@jamesthreats5800 not sure how anyone can muscle off the top bolt while on the car. Got a box wrench in there but no leverage to undo the bolt. Even tried a dead blow mallet on the wrench. No room to swing it. Had to take everything off. And that wobble attachment would have help a LOT!
Awesome video. Really helped me fix this problem. Thanks a lot!
I just fixed mine by eliminating this part all together. The filter housing from a Mazda 3 or Ford Fusion with a 2.3 will work for replacement. The heater hose is exactly the right length to eliminate the short hose. Same size oil filter and the pressure is constant. Runs better than ever.
Eddie McLain
, you eliminated the oil cooler altogether?
Did you convert to the spin-on oil filter as well? What part# did you use?
@@WaveAction777 yes I eliminated all together. Ford cars have the same filter housing as these engines. Just eliminate one coolant line by bypassing with the other.
Bought both the cooler gasket and housing mount gasket for less then 30 bucks! Super easy fix, please don’t make your own gasket especially if the gasket maker costs more then the actual gasket
True, when this was made the aftermarket set was not available. Video still serves as a good guide to the disassembly process. FYI this fix lasted several years until the timing chain went bad and we stopped driving the car.
Yes, as several viewers have shown... there are aftermarket gaskets avaiable now. THE PROCESS TO INSTALL THE INTERNAL GASKET WILL BE THE SAME AS THE R&R INTHE VIDEO SERIES. As mentioned, I would use a new gasket when possible. Good luck with your Mazda.
Hello there,I have the 2008 Mazda 3 Hatch Back 2.3 liter engine and it is leaking oil just like this one you are working on here but when I checked it the oil filter assembly is different from what you have here so it got me a little bit confused,it does not have the other black piece supposedly the oil cooler that yours is showing at the top.So I just want to know if there are some models that has a different oil filter assembly although there is an electrical wire that is connected to the side just like this one.I will really appreciate your assistance.
Do you have any part numbers?
What are the torque specs for the filter houseing to engine block ?
Hi guys., About to do this procedure, but actually change it out with a hi end gasket that is 'supposed' to work...should i dump all the oil before i loosen the 4 bolts or just put a drain pan underneath and leave the oil cap alone...any reply would be appreciated..
You'll loose some oil, but not from the oil pan. So you don't need to do a full oil change unless you want. Don't forget to top off for the loss. Same with the coolant!
@@notoriousJPG thank you..yeah you were exactly right...appreciate the reply
Looks like I have myself a nice project to get together before the weekend. One question: Did you have any issue with removing the coolant hoses? That is, was there still coolant in the line to where I need to get a bucket underneath to keep the mess down?
Just got the car diagnosed and the oil cooler is leaking. Actually, the gasket is, but the garage that I took it to said that you can't buy just the gasket. Of course they want just over $1000 for the repair. I can order the entire part for around 300-400. Is the video much different from an '09 Mazda CX-7? I work with some guys that rebuild cars, I'd like to just order the part and not get reamed.
Does anything drain while taking those hoses off
Yes, coolant will come out of the hoses... And some oil as you remove the cooler assembly
What yr make and model is this exactly.
Can the oil cooler and filter leak mix oil with water in the radiator?
I wanted to see oil pan r and r
These are great videos thanks
THANKS! I'LL BE ADDING MORE MAZDA STUFF SOON.
I have an '09 Mazda 5. Would the procedure to remove & replace the gasket be similar?
And follow-up question:
Can't I just loosen the 15mm bolt and remove the top part of the assembly without dismounting the entire unit???
Does that cause a major leak
Yes it will leak oil, and low oil.. of course will ruin the engine.
Does anyone know what the torque specs for the bolts to install this are?
Did you find Out ? I think they are 120 inch LBS or 10 FT LBS can you confirm ?
Why not replace the bad cooler gasket felpro # 72709 $17.60
can we put 07 or 05 mazda miata engine oil cooler fit to 09 mazda 5? the dealership is no good despite vin number and correct specs.
The "5" series will work and the CX series use the same engine. Some of them have turbo and I'm not positive on those either has to be the 2.3l Mazda engine (Non Turbo) . Which is actually a slightly modified FORD engine used in several other cars and tweaked for the application it's installed in. Not sure on the Miata, but I don't think so.
I just followed all steps how to replace that parts and now my Mazda temperature going hot. what I did wrong? maybe I damage another part. what can I do?
It shouldn't effect the temp unless you forgot to refill your coolant. You will definitely loose antifreeze during this repair and will need to top it off.
I fixed already. The problem was air bubble in the coolant sistem. I got your respond late, but thanks any way
How did you remove the air bubbles?
