When I was in a band, I remember getting into an argument with my bandmates about being signed to a label one day. They were arguing with me because I was saying we should read the contract first, or at least be allowed to take it away to study it with a lawyer, before signing up with a label. I'm no expert, but I can imagine many music labels take advantage of new musicians who would be too excited about being signed up to think about the contract, and thus sneak in a few things. There are countless instances of famous musicians complaining about how much the labels own them and the control they have over them, especially when it comes to money. I just wanted us to avoid such nonsense.
I was floored that I was being treated like the unreasonable one. They were of the 'but we're being signed by a label, isn't that awesome? We may never get this opportunity again and it'd be your fault' mindset.

Thanks for sharing this Ottz- it will help someone. Music management and recording contracts are very layered. Not necessarily complicated but need to be read very carefully for your rights when signing and down the road.

@@FinelyRevealed I just remember watching a documentary where they interviewed loads of musicians who would talk about how much the record labels “owned” them and how sneaky they can be when it comes to their music and the profit made from them. So many horror stories of musicians being taken advantage of by record labels because many didn’t really read what they were signing up for.

My boss thinks I don't read... The employment contract he offered me includes the following:
-must work a minimum of 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday
-no overtime, all hours in excess of 40 shall be paid at the regular hourly rate
-employee may choose to participate in company benefits package(which literally doesn't exist)
-employees must give 8 weeks notice submitted in writing which at the discretion of the employer can result in immediate dismissal without severance pay at any time
-this contract is post dated to 2019
-the contract is copied and pasted... And full of grammatical errors, odd spacing and made to look like it came from a lawyers office. It definitely isn't because lawyers know how to spell.
At this point, I've never had a contract with these pricks. My only benefit has been that I can come and go at my discretion.
I'm thinking that rewriting the entire thing and getting them to sign it without them reading it (because they think I'm not very bright) would be hilarious.

"Do not sign a contract with blanks."
Probably, do not leave a contract with blank informations, or non-solid note. It may be used for another parties advantage and your disadvantage..
Thank you for the advices, its helping me today actually for a pre-employment in a lending company.. I don't think its necessary to apply in a loan or make someone apply in a loan with incomplete informations and purposely only for my employment.. I believe whatever purpose you're signing a contract is, you must be well-knowledgeable about the specifications and the parties involved and the role they partake within the contract, especially to the nature of its purpose...

Hi Imp - most contracts have savings clauses which preserve the rest of the contract around anything that is improper. For help on your particular situation please contact an attorney in your area.

Hi Angela Yes, it is for every contract. Before signing obviously those lines are blank but everything else should be filled in and if it is not then you need to get it filled in- You need to know what the full agreement is before you sign.
