From Toledo TV news, I made a video diary of Magnum's "birth" through the problems it went through in 1989. See below for corrections that the overly dramatic newsreaders make.
My family was at C.P. the day when the riders had to be rescued on Magnum. We watched as the riders were walking down. My mom brings that up when I mention roller coasters.
Ahhh besides the world's first coaster over 200' (which is still on many top 10 lists), I miss the classic CP logo on his hat. *tear...oh what I'd give to go back to my childhood and again ride the Jumbo Jet, White Water Landing, Pirate Ride and Frontier Skylift.
7:40 If that was true that the 2nd train had to stop on the lift hill 15 feet from the top because a train valleyed in the pretzel, how insane were those dispatch times?!!! Or did they not have sensors setup and they had to manually stop the 2nd train when they realized the first wasn't coming back yet?
5:15 "Late yesterday..." No, it was just after 1pm. I was in the station just THREE PAIRS away from riding (the train we would eventually board was the one stuck when the chain broke---which itself was wild.) And riders were not "stranded in midair." The train was *maybe* 1/3 of the way up.
Matt Flickinger This was before it had up stop wheels. The regular up stops slowed the train down due to friction. Also, people back then didn't confuse intensity with roughness like people do now.
Both. They raised the drop from the third hill and put a brake before the turnaround. Cedar Fair is notorious for making changes the minute one person whines. (They bought Kings Isl. and tore down Son of Beast.)
Vee Dee No SOB was a bad design and needed to be tore down. They were sued over it and the manufacturer was also sued it was time for it to go. Magnum changes were for the better and for the makes it a better ride. The third hill is the best old school airtime hill around.
I rode that I stood in line for 6 hours it's in ohio (where I live) I really recommend this. TIP I GOT TO RIDE TWICE BECAUSE MY MOM HAD TO LEAVE TO PUT OUR BAG IN A LOCKER SO WE RODE ONCE AND WE DIDNT HAVE TO WAIT WE JUST RODE AGAIN SO PUT YOUR BAG AWAY FIRST!
the blueprints for Magnum XL-200 state the ride is 201 ft, as it is measured from the bottom of the supports. HOWEVER, the footers for the lift hill add some height, about 4 ft, making it 205. Cedar Point did not count the additional 4 ft from the footers in the 1980s and 1990s marketing materials.
Great memories! This is still one of my favorites. So much air time!
Without trims this is my number 4 at cedar point.

Magnum cost 8million and a Vekoma SLC costs 7 Million
Inflation, my friend.
9 coasters is the most? No other like it in the world? That's a life to live.
It's still a fun ride. I rode this when I was 12 and I took my 12 y/o on it this year. The airtime is my favorite thing on this

Who cheated? How? The height is 205 feet regardless of the drop.

I miss the simulator kiddie ride that had Gemini and Blue Streak. It's at my local mall! I rode it in one of my videos!
still a great ride after all these years, still a great ride. Not as high and fast as its future competitors but still can't complain.
i love magnum

The First Awesome Tall Coaster
If only they knew what was coming next.
Yeah, Millennium Force...and that is all.

Think about this: This was once what Millennium Force is today.
5:40 It's funny. It's been 30 years and chains still break on coasters. It's like they are pulling up tons of pounds and just can't take it anymore!
6:23 The ORIGINAL Karen. June 1989.
6:57 Karen II as a litigating teen.
Haha. Good one
this video was made on my B-DAY :D
wow, it was smooth originally huh? No trim break before the pretzel?

@@RodknockRhett ik people will ride and intense ride and call to rough 😐
1989 seems an impossibly long time ago...Sigh 😕
Randy West Love Magnum XL-200 EST. 1989 at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio USA 🇺🇲 and Randy West One My Favorite Steel Roller Coaster in the World 🌎🌍.
Wow, Vintage Jerry Anderson, Diane Larson, Dick Berry... all still in the Toledo TV news market...
Just rode this Friday night. 20 minute wait, if that. It's definitely showing its age!
Why did you cut the original footage just where they made the recent changes?
I’m not sure what you’re asking.
It seems different after that first tunnel. Did they rebuild or at least add brakes?

Old school airtime? Look at this video again, and compare it to a newer Magnum POV. This 1989 original is WAY better.
Its not ejector air its smooth sustained air time not slam you out of your seat. Plus its easier on equipment.
The third drop was raised and the turnaround smoothed out but otherwise it's basically the same. (Especially when the trims are off or low.)
That kid is a dirty liar. Just wants free money.

A california park announcing a 250ft tall coaster? Well, too bad that never happened.
Technically they did, just 10 years late.
When it first opened it was awesome. When they changed it, it was still good but not as awesome.
0:22 201 feet?!!! So it DID sink?

Cedar Point paid for all of her medical bills.. good ol' CP.
Was that "250 ft tall coaster" Viper?
no, viper is not nearly that tall, i think it’s Goliath
@@evanjones8770 the height record wasn’t broken till 1995 I believe.
Classic.
You couldn't pay me a million dollars to ride this ride. I've never ridden it before and don't plan on doing so
Bro it’s so fun tho
It is amazing actually
“The gem ny “ 1:11
All these stats seem sad today
Lmao yea imagine showing them the stats for millenium force or top thrill
Gemini being that tallest? Kay then.
Stupid rider at 6:58 is the type of people that ruin it for everybody. Jeez!
Only 2.5 Gs? What the fruit (and ppl call Millennium Forceless [and it is] ) KEKW

Lol!!
B&M didn’t exist in 1989
