This could be the story of my Grandfathers life. He grew up on a country farm in Tennessee during the Great Depression. He joined the Marines and fought in WWII where he earned The Silver Star. He met my Grandmother after the war and she was also a Marine. They married and moved back to Tennessee and spent the rest of their lives together. The song always hits me in the heart.
There's a chance your grandfather and my grandfather chewed some of the same dirt. Mine was a SeaBee with the Navy, and found himself in the sh!t with Marines on the regular, until he was severely wounded in the island hopping campaign.

I haven't actually heard High Cost of Living, so I can't outright say it would be a good listen (but it probably is). I can say Between Jennings and Jones is a good song to check out.
Great reaction! I am not a fan of most of today’s country music but I love the old country. Jamey Johnson is a true country musician and has an amazing voice.
Jamey Johnson wrote 'Give It Away' which was a #1 hit single for George Straight. He also performed it live as a duet with Lee Ann Womack in front of Straight when he won an award for Artist of the Decade. If you see that performance and hear Lee Ann Womack's strong vocals then you'll want to hear her sing 'Does My Ring My Ring Burn Your Finger'. Another collaboration that Johnson was a part of was with Miranda Lambert on the Dierks Bentley song 'Bad Angel'. My favorite song of his would have to be 'Redneck Side Of Me' but 'Macon' comes in at a close second. He is one of the most underrated singer songwriters in Country music.
@@BourbonCountryReacts there are several great songs by Craig Morgan. He has one about the loss of his son called the father My Son and the Holy Ghost. Craig also served in the armed services
Love this song! It reminds me of the stories my Grandpa would tell me as he let me feel his beautiful snow white hair. I'd stand behind his chair and just play with his hair. His stories were amazing. He was born in 1819 and left home at thirteen because he was "now a man". My Grandma was born in 1900 and died in 2000. She had amazing stories as well. They both witnessed history being changed and every new inventions made from the car to space travel, from everything being hand made to machines doing it "faster and better". Listening to them was pretty cool.

jamey is truly a brilliant songwriter. He has also had the good fortune of working with some of the great old time writers in Nashville as well. This is an example of what is missing in the "new country". The new stuff is being sung by kids who have not experienced the things they try to sing about. The story is never as good when it's told by someone who hasn't lived it. i believe it was Hall of Fame songwriter Harlan Howard who said when asked to describe country music, "it's a few chords and the truth".

I haven't heard this in while. His voice is pure country. I love the line "you can't see what those shades of gray keep covered". The writing is amazing. You should add Josh Turner to your list, especially Long Black Train - he has a voice that is all country as well and even deeper than Jamie's. I understand what you mean about the old black and white pictures. We moved recently and while packing we came across some of my late grandmother's and late grandfather's and some of my late uncle's pictures, most of them in black and white. We got distracted from packing for about two hours, looking at the photographs. Seeing my grandfather and his brother in their army uniforms was something. Seeing all of the family that has passed on and pictures of those I had heard about but never met was pretty cool and my dad was able to figure out who most of the people were. Expect one. LOL. We found a picture of this movie star beautiful woman and my dad and aunt have no idea who she was. My dad decided we would just assume she was someone my uncle (who never married) had known, despite it being in my grandfather's box of pictures. Personally, I would like to know the story behind that picture. Talk about 'you can't see what those shades of gray keep covered'.

I also love both of y’all‘s reactions! Y’all totally got it! I truly love y’all’s reactions to music!
Agree - this song's story telling did not need a video. So good all around and totally get the Taylor vibe - not the voice - but the beginning, etc. I absolutely love old pictures and stories of a life. And funny you talked about missing out on nothing printed pics. My son is 25 now - but even when he was in high school we talked about ow technology is "stripping" history in the making. No more finding docs or pictures left behind. I have a few floppy disks I will never be able to get those documents and images from unless I find somewhere that can retrieve them. From the day of my son's birth - I bought newspapers of major events in His life - like 9/11 - death of Princess Diana etc. Sad that newspapers no longer highlight as much as they used to. Especially where I live - small town and ONLY local papers are sold. Fortunately my son cherishes history and family heirlooms - there is something to be said for having things on paper and not just digital that can be lost in time as technology changes. Many old shows and classic movies are disappearing as they are not being converted now ... plus.. always nice to open photo albums and look back..
In the 'Beer Song' Jamey explains how a beer is better than a woman because a beer is best when it's cold and you can kill it before it gets old. He wrote the song 'Honky Tonk Badonkeydonk' that was a big radio and Honky tonk dance hit for Trace Adkins. He also recorded a country rap song on one of his albums with Colt Ford called 'Cold Beer'. 'Back To Carolina' and 'Macon' have some serious Skynyrd sounds to them.
Huh. We'll add that to our list. I've already mentioned on channel that I love Allison Krauss's bluegrass stuff. Probably awesome singing together with Jamey. - Keith
One guitar, one voice really worked well here. That's why I brought up James Taylor. It's always kind of mind blowing when an artist can make something that powerful with that instrumental simplicity.
There are people out there who will understand the need to just close your eyes and listen because this is a killer song I still have a suitcase full of black and white pictures and I would have given anything to him seen them in color.

Lead Me Home is gorgeous and brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.
@@AuntCoke Yes it is!!! This is one of the songs that we played at my Daddy’s Funeral. We also played Chris Stapleton’s song “Daddy Don’t Pray.”
I see crossed pistols on that bottle. I'm wondering if the distillery has a tie to military police. Our emblem is crossed pistols.
That James Taylor vibe, that's what I couldn't identify
Yall should check out his song. Lead me home
That Voice!
He is a marine too..mortar man like me...71 year old former marine from south carolina..
BTW Jamey is a former Marine as well as the writer of this song and many more.
he has written songs for other artists such as co-writer for George Straits “Give it Away”
Ahhhh Smoke Wagon. If you ever get a chance to try the Smoke Wagon "Uncut & Unfiltered" I highly recommend it.
Thanks for the bourbon recommendation. If we can find it, we'll try it.
I haven't heard this song in years. Great choice ! Jamey is actually touring this year. For a fun Jamey Johnson song, try -"The Beer Song"
We'll add that to our list.
A Must: High Cost of Living
Added a vote for that one -Dustin
A good one for music and sipping bourbon would be the Farm Aid version of Jamey Johnson and Alison Krauss singing Tulsa Time.
Huh. We'll add that to our list. I've already mentioned on channel that I love Allison Krauss's bluegrass stuff. Probably awesome singing together with Jamey. - Keith
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
And check out in color from farm aid also.. simple 1 guitar and his voice
The video was ok, but the song was outstanding.
Youguys gotta check out jamie johnson lead me hime. One of the bedt eritten songs
Jamie johnson was an 81 mm mortar man in the USMC...me too.
I remember (as a 1371) humping demo, a radio, crypto, and live ammo, and looking over and thinking, "glad I'm not humping that 81 base plate." - Keith
His songs High Cost Of Living and Mowin’ Down The Roses would be perfect for your channel.
Votes added for those -Dustin
Need to check out his song, High Cost of Living
You should check out Jamey Johnson - "Women" It's more of a lighthearted, fun type of song. The women will understand it and the men will agree with it, but everyone will find the laughter. Great review!!
We'll add that to our list.
Cool
Johnson is a helluva Marine, himself.
He's a Marine? Any idea what he did / MOS? - Keith

This song completely breaks me, a metal fan unto a towel in my face 😢
Yep Jamey is country to the bone.
Sounds like it to us.
I need to get some of that bourbon. The Crossed Pistols are the symbols of Military Police, which I was in the US Army.
Professional blue falcon! (Kidding.) (Mostly.) :D
Can confirm...
