Six Locomotives hauling the Tranz Alpine

  • Great Journeys Of New Zealand's "Tranz Alpine" arriving into Arthurs Pass Station. Due to the 1:33 gradient of the Otira Tunnel banker engines are required to be added to the front of all east bound trains, but the Tranz Alpine is different, due to safety reasons the Tranz Alpine is banked in both directions, and two bankers are attached to the front and two are attached to the rear. Here we see the Tranz Alpine emerging from the Otira Tunnel and arriving into Arthurs Pass station where the banker engines are removed, before continuing the journey back to Christchurch.

    Stunning trip did it in 2017 best part of NZ tour The end carriage is open for clear views and photgraphy

      Yes it is one of my favourite New Zealand trips. The open air carriages are great.

      Two are on the back, & two on the front. Both are removed before departing Arthurs Pass.

    Bring back steam engines and the old vulcans,and those damn cakes and pies and cups of tea in those big heavy cups
    A better age..

      Yes, but maybe not bad for a weekday trip. The times I have seen it at Addington it has been well supported, especially with tour groups.
