I agree with the earlier comment that the first test screen was better. He was much more alive and relatable in the first and more detached in the second. It makes me wonder if the reason we didn't get that in the film was due to an unimaginative director.
I really wish Shinzon wasn’t the villain of the film. Somebody like TNG’s Sela, or even the Reman Viceroy would have fit the bill better. Shinzon should have been a more conflicted character, less obviously evil. Would have made Picard’s struggle to save him all the more emotional, trying to stop this hurt and traumatized young man from being used as a weapon. The way the Borg tried to use *him.*
The screen test is the better scene. It has more emotional range, dialogue and nuance. Hardy absolutely kills it and Stewart is just a natural at this point
i think the costume had a lot to do with restricting him or simply changed him. it seemed to affect his head and neck movements. the nuances were lost. or the director wanted him a bit harder.
Idk I beg to differ actually. I mean, yes, the reading had more "emotion" and range, but that's not what we should be seeing. The movie scene gave us a cold, calculating man who's been highly jaded. Jaded men don't emote like "normal" men. The emotion is subdued because they've been forced for so long to be emotionless. Perception is important.
Both remarkable, Great Amazing actors, Sir Patrick Stewart and Tom Hardy. This scene reflects Like a Mirror, each others POV, dichotomy. Federation vs Romulans. Exploration vs Conquering.
Very interesting I'm guess Tom got told to tone down the acting and be more stoic like Patrick is which makes sense given they're supposed to be the same person but it just comes off as wooden. Poor directing as clearly Tom is incredible here
I love Tom Hardy’s suit in this-ultra slim, needs a neck/chin piece, and also maybe even a back of the neck thing…and contacts, and maybe teeth prosthetics
Tom doing accents is always hit or miss. Bane / Iconic meme worthy Ron/reg Kray / very good both of them espcially Ronnie Charles Bronson / really well done picard / kinda weird
@@nicolajohnson1887 It’s not quite as bad as it sounds. Stewart wasn’t sure at the time that Hardy would make it as an actor But in the years since, he’s very happy to have been wrong.
Tom has social anxiety, especially in his youth due to his addictions. Tom is very reserved. and Patrick decided to remember this after 20 years. Patrick remembered that Tom did not communicate with other actors on set. Tom wasn't being rude. He just didn't communicate. Why did Patrick remember this after 20 years????? 😏😏😏
I think the movie does it better. He’s lowkey sh*ta*s nuts we know this, but initially we don’t. They don’t want to give away in his eyes or demeanor that he’s actually insane until it’s pivotal and can cause the biggest thrill. Irl as well a psychopath will be slow in speech, calculating, assessing. I think Tom playing it a little more understated was perfect.
such wasted effort. Also love how they just HAD to make Hardy bald too cuz they think audiences are too dumb to know Picard did have hair when he was younger.
It’s almost disorienting to see Picard in a First Contact uniform, chatting with biker Shinzon 200 years in the past, in the armory of Archer’s Enterprise 😂 It does show how masterful these two were in the movie. Sadly it was overshadowed by the terrible plot/poor screenwriting.
Tom did such an amazing job as a young Picard.
Agreed.

unimaginative is one of the kinder words you could use for the director they had
Why do I get the feeling that I am watching a scene from a 1980s Dr. Who episode. Just shows how lights, camera and sound can create a scene.
My God the old Tardis. Must have been like living in a neon tube lol

Wow, absolutely. This screen test is head and shoulders above the film for this scene. The film version is so rushed.

His character isn't supposed to be childishly emotional. He's a dictatorial villainous character

atleast fictionally so. agreed@@Lord_Pistachio_Nut

Wow, he is really good. Tom that is.
Tom Hardys eyes in the scteen test are terrifying
Wow...Tom is amazing as an evil Picard...
I love the screen test better than the movie version. Still good, but the little details are fuller in the screen test. Picard is the same though.
I really enjoyed this movie. I became a Tom Hardy fan after that.
Agreed❤
I wish there were more of these comparisons on TH-cam
Love nemesis, and this scène is so cool
Stewart is wearing the First-contact/Insurrection uniform with rounded yoke-corners. Like it better than the NEM-version
He's so handsome.
Agreed❤
Nemesis may not have been the best movie, but Tom Hardy may have given us our Best Villain
1:44 I can almost hear Bane's voice start to take shape. Probably two of my favorite Tom Hardy characters, Shinzon and Bane.
Side note: Patrick was wearing his Insurrection uniform. Then they changed it.. don’t know why. The more open V was cleaner.
Such delicious Trekky Nerdery👍
I’ve seen both 100 times and never realized this. I knew there was a reason the uniforms looked cheaper and not as sharp.
Tom Hardy should come reprise that role on one of the newer Star Trek projects.
He died in nemesis though he got blown up.
It triggered the low point of his life, I doubt he'd want to revisit.
@@boobranchercorrection: He was dying of a cellular disease, then impaled by a massive pole, THEN blown up. Maybe he survived
holy crap, i didn't realize that was him in the role.

The original performance has so much nuance while the movies is just a dude.
It would have blown me away if the Golem in the final episode of season 1, Picard, would have been played by Hardy and not Stuart again

Is that the Enterprise NX set??
Looks like they are sat in the armoury to.
Yes they filmed on the same lot at paramount.
Bane used to be very slim
Jeez hearing and reading Patrick Stewart's latest comments about Tom Hardy breaks my heart because I don't know who to believe
What comments

Tom Hardy resembling Wil Wheaton and Patrick Stewart.

Two great actors lost in a terrible movie.
It wasn't terrible. It was the only good movie of the franchise.
It had it's moment's.
Hardy doesn't have the charisma to overact like an Oldman, Pacino or Nicholson.
In fact, he's pretty crap in everything.
Is it noticed that it was done on one of the sets for Enterprise? Kind of cool.
Yep, this was made when Enterprise was in production, probably around season 2
