The Rusty Jaguar Frame Gets Removed, Welded, And Cleaned For Some "Frame-Off" "Restoration"

  • Rusty frame. Dirty underbody. It's time to take the body off the frame. Or, more precisely, take the frame out from under the body. I use wire brushes and some rust treatment to clean the underside, weld up the rest of the frame, and get it powdercoated.

Box fan + furnace filter for secondary dust mitigation is a great tool to have laying around. Just shop vac the filter once you're done and put it in the corner for the next time you need it. Can also be used for avoiding over spray on those quick jobs you want to do in a closed space.

Technically, this would be a restomod, because some aspects are being restored to a functional state, while others are being modified to improve them. My vote for the color is Ford's Piano Black. It has tiny crushed mirror glass particles in it so the sparkle is real. It's like looking at a starry sky. Unfortunately, the number of shops that actually stock the toners and suspension media to spray that are few.

They take up space, they're loud, they're always leaking, and I hate running hoses all around. Lithium cordless tools have pretty much negated the need for air tools. I have a small cordless pancake compressor for airing up tires and my nail gun, but it won't move nearly enough air for sandblasting.
I suppose if I lived somewhere that had lots of space, and I had a non-leaky compressor in a corner with air drops, I might feel differently.

@@SuperfastMatt I got a Kobalt quiet 26 gallon vertical compressor for about $350 and would recommend it, it fits in my single bay garage just fine, and I can't imagine working without one- I've used it for paint jobs and impacting (the electric impacts never seem to be able to perform as advertised), and it doesn't bother the neighbors. They've gotten much better over the years- although the hose does get annoying.

You have a very interesting project that you are working on, but I hope you scrap the idea of chopping the roof line. You are dealing with one of Britain's most elegant cars, and it would be disastrous to sacrifice its stately grace for such a crass butchering of the roofline. Formulaic and useless reworking of the body so it has less outward visibility has to be given a second thought.

Body off, not frame off. The car body comes off the frame.

not if the body is stationary and the frame is moved away from it.

It’s a little bit demoralazing that, apparently, in order to make great TH-cam content you not only have to be professional in what you do but you also have to have Netflix special worthy comedic talent as well. Anyways *sigh*, great content.

    Still don't understand
Why you wouldnt sandblast frame first!!!
I've been at this for 40 years now ...yikes
And not sandblasting first and powdercoating later???
Powder coating is as only as good as the prep! And leaving inbeded rust scale is not good prep🙄

The frame was sandblasted by the powdercoating company before they coated it.

what i don't understand is how you didn't understand that nobody would - or could - powdercoat an unblasted, completely clean, piece of metal. or how it obviously didn't have layers of crap under the paint. ok, i'm being a touch uncharitable.
