I love the idea of having the full reveal and upgrade in a single video. Gives a easier watching experience and it's fantastic for listening when alt tabbing with other things!
I really enjoy having the upgrade guide with the reveal. I feel it is more cohesive, and it allows to be able to jump on potential upgrades right away rather than having to wait.
LOVE combining the reveal and upgrade!! It always felt bad when you revealed my fav precon and I had to wait the longest to see your upgrade. Super stoked about this change❤
I really love the design spacing here between Hazel and the Gang: Hazel is the more powerful, more "sweaty" commander that doesn't neccessarily be built around squirrels at all while the Gang is a more casual squirrel tribal commander. I would certainly build yet another tribal deck around the Gang if I hadn't just bought and upgraded the Sliver precon.
The reference to Siskel and Ebert brings back some memories. Wow. They were the premiere movie reviewers when I was a kid and I used to love watching their show and seeing all the cool movie previews. I would put forth that Josh & Jimmy are the "Siskel and Ebert of the M.T.G. community " ;-) I always enjoy these Deck Reveal's and card reviews when you two guys are on the Mic. Thanks so much for the great content. 🙂
This was the deck I absolutely made sure to pre-order before it comes out. Squirrels can get crazy in commander and looks like it has plenty of the necessary staples.
I preordered all 4 decks mainly because I saw Golgari Squirrels. Chatterfang is one of my favorite commanders and this may get some of my staples from it and become my new fave
Same here. The moment I heard squirrel precon I wanted it. The moment they went up for pre-order, I'm on it. Seems like we made a good choice too what with all the high cost reprints in it.
You guys MAJORLY misread Springheart Nantuko. The way it actually works is that on landfall, regardless of what state it's in, you will get a 1/1 for no additional mana. However, if it's bestowed, you can choose to pay 1G to instead create the token copy. So it's much better than you think.
I can tell you that I do remember watching "At the Movies" when I was a kid, so I got the reference Josh. Also, I currently have a Chatterfang deck and I've already preordered this one. I appreciate listening to you guys talk about the upgrades and the reasoning behind it. It actually gave me ideas for focusing the squirrel deck I have and I'll be using it to great effect for the precon!
Great idea combining both of the content ideas into a single video. It'll make it easy to refer back to one video instead of two videos for those that like to rewatch it multiple times.
I'm so glad you rolled the reveal vid into the upgrade vid. It cuts an unnecessary video and allows you to discuss the cards in a strategic way which you couldn't do in the reveal video. Great idea!
I built squirrels a few years ago, I'm glad to see a few new friends to add to the deck. I hope to see the same with Bears as well! Keep up the good work.
A few cards that can be good to add that I have in my current squirrel deck: Westvale Abbey Arachnogensis Peregrin Took Citizens Plunderer Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia Bitterblossom Idol of Oblivion Mirkwood Bats Emrakul's Evangel I do more of sacrifice style deck and use chatterfang as my commander. Can't wait to get my hands on a few of these cards to add in!
I just finished building my own Chatterfang deck. Wanted the squirreled away precon, but it was sold out in my LGS and was crazy priced online. Most of the cards you've mentioned are in my deck. Had to cut Mirkwood Bats and never seen Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia, will probably include that in the next upgrades I do. Other things I've also added that don't break the bank: Bloodroot Apothecary Deathrite Shaman Gala Greeters Champion of Lambholt Valley Rotcaller Thornvault Forager Cankerbloom Scute Swarm Saryth, The Viper's Fang (instead of that 5 mana snake in this video) Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest Parallel Evolution Harvest Season Ashnod's Altar Treasure Map Cloakwood Hermit Growing Rites of Itlimoc Carpet of Flowers Primal Vigor (if you don't have a doubling season) Heroic Intervention Noxious Revival
Just started playing by grabbing one of those commander decks from Costco that include a 2023 commander deck and a bloomburrow pack and I was loving the art for Bloomburrow so when I saw this deck at target today I had to grab it at target and I’m so glad I did! It’s going for 80 online rn and it’s the exact one I wanted!!!!
Since I have both this one and the Family matters precons, I'm planning to move Helm of the host to this one. Equipping Hazel nets you 5 copies of herself in one turn, letting you copy 6 times afterwards. Insane!
Surprised Helm of the Host wasn't included in the "cards to add" section, since putting it on Hazel makes exponential tokens with her ability. Make a non-legendary copy of Hazel, target it with her ability on the end step, and you have 4 Hazels on the field that can each make 2 more on the next end step.
Something to note about Springheart Nantuko you don't need to pay for the 1/1 insect. You only have the pay 1G option when it's bestowed to make a copy of what it is bestowed on. Otherwise you just make an 1/1 insect
Love it. I was actually building the Necrobloom, Shelob and Meren. There's tons of stuff that could work for Golgari that I was not able to include in those, now they have a home❤
Oooh, I love that art for saw in half. Hadn’t seen it in the spoilers yet Edit: don’t love how many humanoids are in the deck. Feels pretty off theme but oh well…
Big fan of the joint podcast! I typically get overwhelmed by all the new episodes when these precons get revealed so I end up listening to less than half of them all but this way I see myself checking out all the podcasts
I love that they shoved Saw in Half into the deck. You won't see it in many chatterfang lists. It's such a flexible fun card that slots right into the aristocrats theme. As my fellow golgari aristocrats believers know. Having 2 aristocrats on the battlefield is serious business. Saw in Half say one of those new marionette apprentices and your off to the races. Do it mid game, with a doubling effect, thats 4 aristocrats for a mere 3 mana. I could go on.
I'm glad someone else caught that. I was only listening at first and when I heard "new Maelstrom Pulse art" I had to look because I love that card. But I wasn't really impressed.
Really appreciated the more abbreviated format and combining the upgrade and review/reveal. I would like to see the upgrade guide lean into the unique elements of the deck as opposed to adding more generically powerful cards even if that means not strictly sticking to the 10 card limit or even swapping the commander.
I gotta say, I really love your precon reveals and upgrade videos. I think I watched every single one you released the last 2 years. One thing that sometimes bothers me though ist that you never talk about the flavor of a deck. The cards you add are of course strong and will of course help to win. But in my opinion flavor is a big factor. (Especially in a set like Bloomburrow) So while I see the benefit of a Jaheira in this Deck, a little voice inside me is shrieking "flavor fail!" I would love to see you talk about the flavour of the Decks more. Thanks anyways for this content and I always love to see you both together.
nah I like the singing, it brings a sense of human ness to the show. relatableness. you can show a professional side all the time , but showing you can have fun doing something you're not good at/ is silly and fun shows you don't take the game too seriously. going back to the point commander is a game! let's have fun!
Loved the upgrade. But squirrel is the name of the deck. I would've loved to see a squirrel upgrade guide. I have a squirrel deck and was really looking forward to seeing how to make it better.
@@warpo7460 Yes both of the squirrel commanders are cool I agree with you there. But, I don't understand your reply, because any squirrel deck is inherently black and green.

This was a great breakdown! And I'm super excited about getting this deck and upgrading it. I would really love the same treatment for the Raccoon Deck! An Artifact and Enchantments Gruul deck sounds like my kind of deck.
This might be the first set in a while that I buy more than one precon. On Jimmy's point of taking out a bunch of cards to make a new deck. I've done that. It's a lot of fun, and you end up with 2 sick decks. (Mine was a queen marchesa that was lifegain + tokens and aristocrats, I pulled out the 10-15 card life gain package and it's now my Ayli eternal pilgrim deck)
rootcast apprenticeship is super good. It can take out the one ring, unless that player has 3 mana rocks they want to waste instead. In miirim, the temur dragon decks, it reads "4 mana, create 3 copies of your best dragon token" ...... Absolutely awesome
its like 50% of my current squirrel deck that I first made back in the 90's with deranged hermit and lifeline, its been my favorite deck for nearly 30 years. Like that it exists, sad that my deck isn't so unique anymore.
I rreally like the combined reveal + upgrade method. Sure, you miss out on being able to recommend cards from the main set, but it's very nice having only one video on the deck.
Hazel's Brewmaster is kinda nutty (pun intended) in Henzie, where you get to exile twice that one turn and those food tokens can get those abilities immediately since the artifacts dont have summoning sickness
Could you do a video about 'how to upgrade'? Josh started down that tangent and it was really interesting because it involves a pretty extensive decision making process but is perhaps a little easier than deck-building from scratch. This Squirrels precon clearly has a few different directions to take it in - e.g. going all in on the squirrels, or mainly pump effects or mainly aristocrat effects, it seems like there's even more such as abusing Hazel's ability and turning it into a bit of a monolith commander deck. It's a complex topic, worth an episode maybe?
I love the deck! In my opinion, the strongest thing you can do out of the box is ignore both of the intended commanders and just put Chatterfang into the command zone. It makes the whole deck come together better than either of the intended commanders
I got my hands and played this deck in a 3 man precon pod. While I do agree with those upgrades, I don't agree with what is being taken out. Squirrel Gang + Hazel's Brewmaster was actually what won me the game as I was behind on life and cards.. but what I had was Scurry of Squirrels. So I used him + Brewmaster to make a 21/21 Scurry and swing for lethal on both opponents due to Myriad Myriad
I actually believe that Insatiable Frugivore allows you to repeat the process as many times as you wish, since it has the same templating as cultivator colossus. This means that if you have a lot of cards in your graveyard, you can use Insatiable Frugivore as an overrun you pay in installments, scaling as you deem is necessary.
This deck looks crazy, just the singles within it are really really convincing. Maybe WotC has started to notice that they can capitalize on the secondary market better by just putting desireable cards in precons?
I’ve moved on to using ghave as my squirrel commander cause I like access to white for selesnya goodness but im really excited for what this deck will add to it
What do you think about this deck? Are you excited about it? What new cards slot in perfectly to your existing commander decks?
I am so getting the precon deck, it looks really awesome and Golgari is my favorite color pairing and I really want this deck so badly.
I think Hazel of the Rootbloom is going to be awesome in mycotyrant.

Brightcap badger seems as really interesting addition to fungus guy, for me propably better than Hazel
I’m excited for it. My favorite new card in this deck is the face commander and the sword of the squeak. I will be getting all 4 decks
Love that y’all combined the reveal and the upgrade into one
Definitely prefer this new format and hope it's here to stay. With each video often being roughly an hour; ain't nobody got time for that

Glad I made a Chatterfang deck a few months ago. Bought all the good squirrel cards while they were in stock.
I love that way of upgrading the deck. I personally went in the direction of putting out more squirrels, putting Chatterfang as the commander.
Thats awesome having the upgrade included with this!
Really liked this 2 in 1 format!
A few cards that can be good to add that I have in my current squirrel deck:
Westvale Abbey
Arachnogensis
Peregrin Took
Citizens Plunderer
Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia
Bitterblossom
Idol of Oblivion
Mirkwood Bats
Emrakul's Evangel
I do more of sacrifice style deck and use chatterfang as my commander. Can't wait to get my hands on a few of these cards to add in!
I believe this deck already comes with Idol of Oblivion.

Other things I've also added that don't break the bank:
Bloodroot Apothecary
Deathrite Shaman
Gala Greeters
Champion of Lambholt
Valley Rotcaller
Thornvault Forager
Cankerbloom
Scute Swarm
Saryth, The Viper's Fang (instead of that 5 mana snake in this video)
Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest
Parallel Evolution
Harvest Season
Ashnod's Altar
Treasure Map
Cloakwood Hermit
Growing Rites of Itlimoc
Carpet of Flowers
Primal Vigor (if you don't have a doubling season)
Heroic Intervention
Noxious Revival
