    I love the way Judas seems kinda of a softy but afraid

      Thats judas the whole way. He doesn't want to start any beef with his friend Jesus. He is just letting him know things are getting crazy. Judas is telling Jesus to chill before they all get killed.

    Edit: I LOVE the way Josh sings this song. He may not have a rock and roll voice, but his voice does have a wonderfully gritty/soul feel to it that I can't help but adore.

    Saw this live, and while I still think the show itself has moments of sheer WTF ridiculousness, never has my mind been blown by a production! And Josh Young stole the show. He was a force of nature and deserved his Tony nomination. He is only second to Ben Vereen who was like a fireworks and brimstone preacher in the orignal production; Here, Josh's version of Judas was the unrequited love interest of Jesus, which spoke bigger volumes in the lore of Jesus Christ. Powerful, powerful, powerful.

    It took several viewings of the nuance in Josh Young's interpretation for me to appreciate it, but now I'm convinced that is an extremely talented vocalist and diligent actor doing great work. If you really read the text and listen to the lyrics you'll see Judas is railing against Jesus' followers for letting their emotions rule over reason. For anyone saying Josh Young's Judas sings without enough feeling or emotion, consider that this is a choice which fits very well in line with Judas' arc for the last week of Jesus' life. Up until this point he has watched things get out of hand, in his opinion, and now where we come in at the top of JCS he has almost "checked-out" of the emotional connection and tries so hard to appeal to the logic he feels will keep them alive. I know its a new or unfamiliar interpretation for many viewers, but I think he nails it as the beginning of a show-long arc. not just about rock vocal riffs in one song.

      @@The7nUp don’t get me wrong I love Carl so much and honestly tend to prefer more soulful vocals but 1. Just because he sings differently doesn’t mean it needs work LOL not everyone is supposed to sound the same and josh has a beautiful and powerful voice as well. 2. This show was being done 7-8 times a week LIVE ON BROADWAY, you can’t really think actors playing Judas/Jesus/marry are going to do every vocal option up possible when they have to perform every single day over and over again songs that are extremely difficult

      Salvador Vega you don’t understand male voices. He is a baritone. His breaks are that of a baritone. His upper notes G4-D5 are all placed very strategically because of his natural baritone voice.

    this version is wonderful! i prefer the same actor singing it a few years later (more concert-y, less musical-ly) he's really able to let loose vocally without being obnoxiously rock-y
    if i had a single micro-criticism to give, i'd want to hear him sing "jesus"(0:40) as powerfully as he sings "say" (1:04) [I mean the words, not song titles or anything else] I hear space in the song for him to hit us with a wall of sound

    My mind is clearer now.
    At last all too well
    I can see where we all soon will be.
    If you strip away The myth from the man,
    You will see where we all soon will be. Jesus!
    You've started to believe
    The things they say of you.
    You really do believe
    This talk of God is true.
    And all the good you've done
    Will soon get swept away.
    You've begun to matter more
    Than the things you say.
    Listen Jesus I don't like what I see.
    All I ask is that you listen to me.
    And remember, I've been your right hand man all along.
    You have set them all on fire.
    They think they've found the new Messiah.
    And they'll hurt you when they find they're wrong.
    I remember when this whole thing began.
    No talk of God then, we called you a man.
    And believe me, my admiration for you hasn't died.
    But every word you say today
    Gets twisted 'round some other way.
    And they'll hurt you if they think you've lied.
    Nazareth, your famous son should have stayed a great unknown
    Like his father carving wood He'd have made good.
    Tables, chairs, and oaken chests would have suited Jesus best.
    He'd have caused nobody harm; no one alarm.
    Listen, Jesus, do you care for your race?
    Don't you see we must keep in our place?
    We are occupied; have you forgotten how put down we are?
    I am frightened by the crowd.
    For we are getting much too loud.
    And they'll crush us if we go too far.
    If we go too far....
    Listen, Jesus, to the warning I give.
    Please remember that I want us to live.
    But it's sad to see our chances weakening with every hour.
    All your followers are blind.
    Too much heaven on their minds.
    It was beautiful, but now it's sour.
    Yes it's all gone sour.

    The camaraderie between Judas and Mary in this is really confusing to me. I can't imagine that it's very convincing in Strange Thing Mystifying like ten minutes later when he goes about how Jesus shouldn't be wasting his time with her.

      @erinw4935 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      He says he doesn't object to her profession! Lol. I think it's more portrayed as a jab thrown at Mary due to jealousy in this production. He's trying to discredit her in Jesus' eyes more than anything.
      Their relationship is really toyed around with in this production, and I'd argue you see moments where each of the three of them shows attraction to one another, even Judas and Mary towards each other. I think the point of it all is that Judas' feelings were extremely twisted up, which gives ample opportunity for Judas to make such a terrible choice, even if he didn't think it would lead to Jesus' death.

    I actually made a special trip up to NYC to see this production before it closed, and that is something I regret to this day. Josh Young, while clearly a talented, classically trained vocalist, was not cut out to sing rock. Full stop. Watching him stumble through one of my all-time favorite songs live was a painful experience. Years later, that experience is no better. My only consolation is that this revival didn't last and that Josh Young didn't go on to win an award for butchering something I love.

Not all classically trained vocalists sound too legit for roles on broadway, Anthony warlow is a good example of someone who can do both legit and rock (check out Jekyll and Hyde 1994 cast recording if you know what I mean). Maybe he should’ve been Judas instead (what, Judas can’t be older? Please).....

    This song doesn't work unless you have a "rock n roll" voice. You can pull off Phantom with a "theater" voice but JCS NEEDS that grit in the vocals, like Little Richard. And yes... he is an amazing vocalist, without question, but this music is very specific and requires a rock feel.

    It's a ROCK opera - you're not supposed to cast singers who sings almost all words with round tones. Of course a trained singer will use that technique during their performance - but this guy is doing it far too much for the part he is playing. I prefer the likes of Carl Anderson and Brandon Victor Dixon singing this.

  • @donnievasey8528
    @donnievasey8528 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Personally, I thought this was boring. JCSS by definition is a rock opera. I heard zero rock in this at all. He does have a great voice, but not Judas to me. Maybe Marius ?

    • @musicallove6785
      @musicallove6785 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He actually played Marius a few years before this and is one of the best ever in that role in my opinion. For his Judas, I get why people don't like him, even though I think he's great.

    Agree Sparta2310-- empty...and why is Judas singing to Mary Magdaelene, when his words should be directed to Jesus? go listen to the 1970 album...now THAT is singing with feeling.

    Sorry but this song depends on the two lines that go way up and loud--"have you forgotten how put down we are?" and "it's sad to to see our chances [are] weakening with every hour". A fail. They should have gotten someone who could have handled the part.

      I get missing the option up. But I actually kind of like the decision to option down, it makes it so the song builds up more to the climax. Also, it's not a matter of Josh Young not being able to sing the notes, he has a solo album called Still Dreaming of Paradise where he sings this song in the original format. And if you listen to him sing the end, or literally anything from this show, it's clear he can sing a B flat.

    • @marspowr
      @marspowr ปีที่แล้ว

      this could've been filmed at a wednesday matinee for all you know. just because he didn't do the option in this performance, doesn't mean he never did it.

    • @garygreen3845
      @garygreen3845 วันที่ผ่านมา

      He sang it the way it is written in the score. Now, if you have an objection that he didn't copy or mimic the way another singer sang it, then that's another issue.

      In the guy’s defense, this was probably earlier on in the run or he did not find his footing yet, he did admit surprise that he was cast as Judas in Jesus Christ superstar in this interview: www.google.com/amp/s/articles.nj.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2015/07/josh_young_amazing_grace_broadway.amp.

      I mean, I don't really see that as a bad thing. I think people glorify obvious emotions too much in acting, and it comes at the detriment of acting itself. Most of human interaction is nuanced, you can get a lot from smaller queues without needing someone to act super emotional.
      To me, Josh sounds less hysterical (like other renditions) and sounds more like he's withholding fear. Carl Anderson sounds a bit more genuinely panicked and somewhat distraught though. Josh has more of a "Goddamn it all of my friends are delusional and I need to take this into my own hands" quality whereas Carls is more of a "Oh my god all of my friends are gonna die".
      Like, Josh registers as impending but preventable doom where as Carl registers as immediate doom, if that makes any sense.

      Blake Moses Well technically, he did sing all the right notes. This is the closest rendition I've heard to what's actually written. He ad libbed a lot less than Carl Anderson, Murray Head, etc.

    • @marcocalderon6251
      @marcocalderon6251 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yeah, I guess that is why you are a famous, regular cast member of this musical and he is a nobody. When you are a worlwide recognized singer, then you can judge. In the meantime, get a life.

    • @sandy_carpetsthesecond5013
      @sandy_carpetsthesecond5013 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean, I don't think that's the case. He was hitting the same notes, but Carl Anderson sounds like a tenor to me, and Josh Young sounds like a baritone.
      I did notice that Josh riffed less, but he managed to keep up with the most agile passage within the song, So I'm assuming that's an artistic move more than a talent limit.

  • @melissakamath9106
    @melissakamath9106 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This production was a travesty. Sadly I saw it in person. While Paul Nolan's voice is incredible, this Josh guy simply can not sing. His placement is all over the map and he can't riff at all. Totally disrespectful to the God of the role of Judas, Mr. Carl Anderson.
