Minchin's take on the role of Judas is of a man showing very clearly that he's fed up and coming on strong in his frustration, at times mocking in tone, but in all his bravado can't entirely mask his fear and genuine concern. Unlike other equally valid interpretations of the character where the fear is more apparent throughout, Minchin's Judas tries to be reasonable, but ultimately let's his cool slip.
Autotune flattened this number in the official recording for no good reason. Tim is a pro and his technique deserves an honest spotlight. Thanks for putting up this version.
This is one of my favorite renditions of this song. Not for the most impressive bits, though he's got pipes. But for the character moments, where he sacrifices vocal perfection for emphasis. I've heard too many versions of this song executed flawlessly, but without the clear intention behind the song.
That’s not completely accurate he inherited an existing score and adapted it into the amazing piece of art it became he didn’t want to do it initially. Also isn’t it stupid that the animated film he created was written off as a tax thing.
Tim looks like he didnt sleep for 48 hours before falling asleep two hours before the show started and his manager had to drag him out of bed straight onto the stage haha
An outspoken atheist as Judas is some of the most perfect casting I've ever seen. I consider Judas the "original atheist" and having someone who understands that view so perfectly adds so much depth. Tim also makes FANTASTIC character choices and his vocals are GORGEOUS. He'll forever be my standard and image for Judas Iscariot.
You are of course free to define the word, "atheist", any way you want. Mirriam-Webber defines it as, "a person who does not believe in the existence of a god or any gods". Some reserchers argue that the first signs of any form of beliefs in gods are as old as 200,000 years. The general consensus, though, is that belifs have started 70,000-100,000 years ago, and religion in modern sense about 6,000 years ago. 6,000 years is also the time-line supported in the Bible. Homo sapiens, however, have been around for 300,000 years, and earlier species of the genus homo existed 2 million years ago. This means that for 2 million years all humans were atheist. They simply could not believe in something that had not yet been invented. The literary character, Judas, seems, however, to be presented as a believer. He just did not believe that Jesus was God's son, a belief Earth's entire population shared at the time. So, with your definition of "atheist" (a non-believer in Christ being God's son), you have over 6 Billion people to chose from. And just like Minchin, most of them cannot hit all the notes in "Heaven on Their Minds". And just like Minchin, most of them are not well-suited for the role of Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar.
I love the way Tim says 'Messiah' I am so glad I decided to watch this when it was on TV and I have it recorded forever and ever. It's great to hear Tim sing this amazing song without the autotune which he clearly does not need
Oddly, the "slower-than-usual" pace works well for me, after the first seconds of "uh ?". The ryhtmic section and Tim's energy work well, giving a mix of "smooth despair". I only wish the audio mix gave more presence to Tim's voice.

at the risk of sounding pompous, it occurred to me that this song is making a statement about reason coming into conflict with faith (especially blind faith) and that belief that is unchecked by reason and a critical mind can turn into something very dangerous. one look at history should be enough to prove my point.
louis bailey Are u Jews? So double standard. U think it's OK to insult Christian & muslim, while u can freely call it antisemitic when people have problem with that. Stupid
djjerome What makes faith dangerous isn't the message itself . It's the insane acting out demented acts , thinking that God would approve . It's the act of extremism in religion . Please ...Please don't be one of those who judges the whole , based on the acts of extremists . That would contradict your logic and reason argument .

And all the good you've done
Will soon get swept away.
You've begun to matter more
Than the things you say.
Listen Jesus I don't like what I see.
All I ask is that you listen to me.
And remember, I've been your right hand man all along.
You have set them all on fire.
They think they've found the new Messiah.
And they'll hurt you when they find they're wrong.
I remember when this whole thing began.
No talk of God then, we called you a man.
And believe me, my admiration for you hasn't died.
But every word you say today
Gets twisted 'round some other way.
And they'll hurt you if they think you've lied.
Nazareth, your famous son should have stayed a great unknown
Like his father carving wood He'd have made good.
Tables, chairs, and oaken chests would have suited Jesus best.
He'd have caused nobody harm; no one alarm.
Listen, Jesus, do you care for your race?
Don't you see we must keep in our place?
We are occupied; have you forgotten how put down we are?
I am frightened by the crowd.
For we are getting much too loud.
And they'll crush us if we go too far.
If they go too far
Listen, Jesus, to the warning I give.
Please remember that I want us to live.
But it's sad to see our chances weakening with every hour.
All your followers are blind.
Too much heaven on their minds.
It was beautiful, but now it's sour.
Yes it's all gone sour.
Listen, Jesus, to the warning I give.
Please remember that I want us to live.
C'mon, c'mon
He won't listen to me
c'mon, c'mon
He won't listen to me
I am so glad to have this version without the Autotune. Proves there was ZERO reason to autotune Tim’s superb singing voice.
TIM!!! YOU ROCKED IT!
Anyone else think the band was to slow?
YAS
+Louis Fenney Slightly
+Louis Fenney Yeah poor guy. Tempo is all wrong.
+Louis Fenney y e s

This just proves the decision to so heavily auto tune him in the arena tour was completely unnecessary
Why did they destroy his voice. with auto tune! It’s was so not needed and this is proof. I could listen to this over and over.
This was way better Than what I thought
Does the camera guy have a crush on the flute player?
What a bloody champion
missed you by one day in Cardiff so sad but I still have the hope of seeing you one day with my friend and SISTER Niicki

Came to hear the raw vocals. He did NOT need auto-tune.
He is fantastic!!! Gotta love hot Aussies.
OrangeTabbyCat "Yes, he's also a bloody Ginger"!
We're extremely proud of him here in Oz
Why dont they revive this movie opera? Its great!
Talented? Gifted? What's THAT?? It must be Godgiven... Nearly unbelievable... But very very feelable...
Tim minchin is a great performer and singer
at the risk of sounding pompous, it occurred to me that this song is making a statement about reason coming into conflict with faith (especially blind faith) and that belief that is unchecked by reason and a critical mind can turn into something very dangerous. one look at history should be enough to prove my point.
Oh, come on... It's only about Jewish mocking Jesus. You know Jewish. They hate everything, especially Christian & Muslims.
djjerome I thought the same thing.
louis bailey The statement "blind faith" is redundant.
louis bailey Are u Jews? So double standard. U think it's OK to insult Christian & muslim, while u can freely call it antisemitic when people have problem with that. Stupid
djjerome What makes faith dangerous isn't the message itself . It's the insane acting out demented acts , thinking that God would approve . It's the act of extremism in religion . Please ...Please don't be one of those who judges the whole , based on the acts of extremists . That would contradict your logic and reason argument .
