Why a regular dentist would try to fix this is beyond crazy. This is called a for orthodontist.

My orthodontist basically gave me two options to close my open bite. He told me i can get surgery, and wear braces for around 15 months, or instead wear braces for approximately 30 months to avoid surgery. I’m 23 years old, and have to wear my elastics constantly. I fear gum recession may occur, but also acknowledge I have it already with the first molars on my upper teeth. So a gum graft or surgery is probably a must after treatment. I am very sure that the recession in these two teeth specifically were caused by bruxism in my sleep, but I was able to eliminate this habit recently.

My situation is even more unique. I gained an open bite as an adult after lefort III surgery. I was told by the hospital that I would need further surgery (and braces) to correct it. I have decided not to have any more surgery and explored other options but you would be amazed how many dentists have offered me invisalgn, veneers etc to treat my bite! It does put me off dentists tbh because it feels like they just want the money.

Similar story! Orthognathic Surgery 1981 after many years of orthodontia in preparation for the procedure. (Heck, I had first been tagged to go this direction at age 8 and I did NOT have any deformity or disability! Child abuse?) Within in a year of this operation, my open bite was back, little contact. Within two years, braces back on and various appliances. Revisited about 10 years ago... "go get bands on, see you in the OR". In 1981, there was no ORIF (screws and stuff) being used , jaws wired shut for months with a splint shoved in between, only Ensure (all that would get through), days in ICU to control swelling, protect brain, vomiting out the nose (which I was told was normal, no problem). While today's surgical techniques are a bit more elegant, this is a BIG DEAL! Two weeks ago, a dentist told me that I "tongue thrust". I discovered Dr. Mew's work two weeks ago. Simply stunned. And encouraged. Already making a difference. Consider this...if the results of surgery can be reversed so quickly, we are malleable! Good luck. We got this! I no longer tongue thrust...TWO WEEKS! And I have more bite contact. I can't wait for two months! Was given an OMT referral but weeks long wait. I have already figured it out...NOT rocket science...I just NEVER knew there was a correct way to swallow!

I’m 40 and starting treatment next month. I have an mild anterior open bite with a mild tongue thrust (I’ve had the same open bite since I was a kid and it’s not gotten worse). I also have a lateral cross bite on one side with a very small cant on the lower front- no crowding. My ortho REQUIRED long term myofunctional therapy with regular reports sent to her. Spark aligners with elastics. AND STILL made it clear that I may need fixed braces after the aligners for a period and they still might not be able to completely correct the cross bite in the back. I will be in a fixed retainer and nightly retainer for the rest of my life and if I don’t maintain the myo therapy it will revert back.
I think it’s really important for people to have informed consent and clear expectations of what will be required of them for this kind of treatment to be successful. It’s basically like managing a chronic condition and a lot of people are simply not equipped through their regular life experiences to deal with that - especially for something that most view as largely cosmetic (open bites are FAR from just a cosmetic problem and anyone who has one and has tried to eat a salami sandwich will tell you that)

I am 41. I had a bite that looked similar to this photo in this video due to a tongue thrust. Although in my case, my thrust also caused my bottom teeth/jaw to protrude a bit and had an underbite, not an overbite. Ortho said as a teen around 15 I'd need surgery to slice the bone, fill it, and drop the maxilla down more. I declined. I came back when I was 30 and agreed to do braces. It helped a lot and brought the teeth to touch, but done by pulling the teeth down from the top making the teeth look longer, but also up from the bottom, making my bottom front teeth look like they have receding gums. A few years after first braces, it regressed a little so at age 39 had braces again. Only now at 41 am I actually doing tongue mewing to retrain the tongue. Hopefully not too late for me get some improvements.

Thank you for this informative video! I had braces as a teen for an overbite, it was corrected and all was well. By my late teens I developed an open bite and my orthodontist put me back in braces for a year. Got my braces off, then within a year, I developed an open bite AGAIN. Over the years was told it was tongue thrust, then told it was because my upper jaw kept growing as an adult, all the while having a very small lower jaw. Was on round three of braces when I correctly was diagnosed with condylar resorption, worsened even with my third round of braces. Now have tons of gum recession from years and years of braces and retainers, only one tooth touches, my jaw hurts, and now waiting on jaw replacement surgery that I should've had a decade ago. All dentists and orthodontists need to be trained better to treat and find the correct etiology for open bite cases.

I have a tongue thrust. I had braces twice: once, to quote my old ortho, “make the mouth bigger” (with that key on the roof of my mouth, I think a jaw expander). then another time to straighten my teeth. Both times I had a tongue cage or appliance.
When I got my metal retainer, it also had a cage bonded to it. On my last appointment, my ortho told me that if the retainer doesn’t keep the open bite and tongue thrust closed, then jaw surgery will be needed. 9 years late, Well, it didn’t keep my bite closed.
Now that I’m practicing swallowing exercises, I’m noticing that I have a hard time breathing. Like whenever I practice it or put my tongue in the correct position, I kind of snore. And this reminded me of obstructive sleep apnea. Something about the back of the throat being enlarged? I feel like this might be the issue of not breathing correctly, so my tongue has changed its position to allow me to breathe, basically forcing my tongue to rest at the bottom of my mouth rather than top. Although my ENT, says that my throat is fine. I’m not sure. What do you think? I want braces again, but I really need to fix my tongue thrust, swallow habits, or wherever it is first. That’s with therapy first and jaw surgery being my last resort.
    I’d appreciate ur advice!

Not everyone wants or can afford surgery! However, surgical options should be discussed in all suitable cases including other malocclusions. Minor AOB’s can be considered for treatment by non specialists providing that they understand the time limitations of anterior elastic treatment. For example, crossbite or ex digit sucking cases. Severe growth rotations where there is substantial dento-alveolar compensation should be specialist joint interdisciplinary oral Surgery referral cases, agreed.

these usually relapse unless the myo issue was solved first- I see it all the time. Also surgeries are often covered by medical insurance, if there's an underlying co-morbidity OSA. It happens. What I am getting at is that I want all patients with an openbite to be checked by OMT and Evaluated for Surgery FIRST- don't worry about the cost. If it's "needed" there's always a way. I had two dentist and 3 orthos tell me I needed double jaw surgery to fix my open bite considering I was 22 when I wanted to start, and then would need braces.
I found a fourth, incredible, AMAZING ortho at 24, that gave me nothing but a classic palette expander. That’s it! That is it. My dentist was shocked and said my upper jaw would never expand with just that, and that it’ll be a failure, and I’ll need surgery still.
My upper palette expanded in a month. :)
I got a retainer put in that adhered to two back teeth on either side of my mouth, and that arched right under the roof of my mouth for about 10 months. This was to maintain the newly created width.
My double cross bite was corrected, my breathing was exceptionally better (I could never breathe through my nose all day before), and now I still have a huge open bite… but all I need is invisalign! Which I’m starting in one week :)
I respect your views as a professional, but I wanted to leave this comment to let others know that I was told this was impossible by multiple professionals… and then told the “impossible” could be quite simply corrected by one final professional that I am so blessed to have found, and that is changing my freaking life at now 25.

    Great video!!!
I have an anterior open bite as well. Also, I'm an adult. Thing is, i did not have one as a child. Somehow I developed it later in life. Had some imaging done and no joint deterioration so not sure whats going on here. Im hesitant to treat it because just as u state, if the cause isn't found, relapse is likely. Kinda stuck. Chewing really sucks. I only make contact on like one molar on each side. They suggested jaw surgery to me however, im cautious due the invasive nature AND risk of relapse. Any thoughts on how to address this would be greatly appreciated.
***My theory was an airway issue. I feel i perhaps resulted tongue forward to create more room in the airway, slowly creating an open bite. I duno if this is possible but that's what I came up with. No one else explained to me why I developed an open bite later in life. I was told tongue thrust (during swallow), but I find that unlikely cause, well why wouldn't I have an open bite as a child than. I'm pretty sure if that's the case, then I would've had an open bite younger in life as well. My bite slowly started opening up around age 24. And it got progressively for about 4-5 years than sorta stabilized. Plus, I don't think tongue thrust (like during swallow) is that important IMO, i think its RESTING tongue posture that's more important. I also read some papers that stated that the tongue just goes there cause theres room, so it's a finding of a tongue thrust during swallow, but that often resolves during open bite closure. I'm not really sure what to make of all that but, I'm mostly just trying to identify how i got an open bite, why it progressed for a few years, and how to treat this so i can chew like a normal person. I also have tmj issues. I think its due to my sleep bruxism. I grind my teeth when sleeping. Not during the day. But the xray didn't show any joint deterioration, and no history of injury or trauma.

Hey! I had an open bite my entire life, and we suspect it was from an airway issue as well (I know yours developed later though). I was a mouth breather and I'm not sure if you are/were? I couldn't breathe well through my nose. I had tonsil problems a lot when I was younger, so we suspect that contributed as well to my jaws not developing correctly. It's important to identify if you have a skeletal issue or dental. Mine was skeletal and thus myofunctional therapy would not be of great assistance if you simply do not have room for the tongue in the mouth (it's a good idea to get evaluated if you have jaw surgery). I had double jaw surgery last year. I for sure can breathe much better and it's helped with my TMJ issues. Everyone's body and outcome is unique, so I'm not recommending surgery without knowing any details...I am recommending though identifying if it's skeletal or not. If it opened later in life at 24 it may just be dental in nature and orthodontics + myofunctional therapy in that case could be sufficient! A Cone beam scan would be able to assess skeletal relationships between the mandible/maxilla and whether your maxilla "overgrew", etc.

what are the options for fixing 2mm open bite in adults? I guess that is not a case for the surgery. I have got fixed my 1-2mm open bite by anterior extrusion with invisalign. I wrote 1-2mm because my front teeth were a bit worn out, maybe 0.5 mm. I am now concerned that it will relapse soon. Would molar intrusion be a better solution for such small open bite? any advices what to do? I don't remember having open bite when I was a teen, but not sure. Btw, my orthodontist didn't mention any possible relapse of the open bite, absolutely nothing. I am also concerned that anterior extrusion is not a good thing for roots, bite, shape of the mouth.
