My name is Zach Phelps-Roper, and I am a former member of Westboro Baptist Church.
I just wanted to point out that Steve Drain lied in this interview about Fred Phelps Sr, my grandfather, as concerning his membership. You may notice at approximately 2:18-2:22, Steve shakes his head "no" as he says "That's right;" a negation and an affirmation, my friend, are completely opposite. His body language proves too much, and I'm not entirely sure why they feel the need to lie about what happened to my grandfather. I am not proud of the way I treated my grandfather following his excommunication, but at least I take responsibility for it: I try to not turn away people in need of help because of the gross neglect that I felt I contributed to his care.
The gist is this: Gramps, as I call him, was excommunicated for a number of reasons, ranging from cited emotional abuse to certain members of the "church," to calling my now-friends at the Equality House (a.k.a. Planting Peace) "Good people." He was *not* a member in good-standing when he died. They did not hold a funeral for him, either, according to what my mother told me after I left the "church" in February 2014.

As much as I despise your mother I have seen good qualities in some videos of her. This guy is just pure evil.
It seems that Steve Drain is completely evil. Both Lauren Drain's and Megan Phelps' books paint a very very disturbing picture of him. He seems to be just a power-hungry a-hole who has no problems with lying for Jesus whenever it seems opportune.
Another thing he seems to be lying about is the claim that there is no hierarchy. He himself is an "elder" and what kind of regime has been introduced is starkly described in Megan's book.

This guy from the Westboro Baptist Church needs to explain why an omniscient god would have any reason to hate his creations, since he would have created them with the full knowledge of what they would eventually do. Hatred is a human failing, one would think that such an entity would be above such things. Hatred also implies that Yahweh was not fully aware of what's going on, and something happened that he did not expect and displeased him.

If human beings were made in the image of God, then clearly God is hateful. Besides which, to describe hatred as a human failing is wrong. Hatred is just as important an emotion and phenomenon as everything else in the universe because the universe is perfect. All negativity you see before you is perfect by virtue of its existence. Everything including human failure has a place.
If you read the Bible, you'll find God is _not_ all-knowing, omnipotent, or beyond feeling anger, hate, or even beyond regret or feeling remorse. Half of that you can find in the Old Testament.

Good interview technique as usual, David. I'll just say one thing about the guest. He's obviously a sincere believer in his doctrine. I mean that he really believes that 'the spiritual world' is the only world that matters, which if you think about it is a scary, scary concept. To me, this interview really helps to show that the real problem with the WBC is not the people themselves; the real problem is *what they believe*, and also *the source* of what they believe, i.e. religious dogma (in this case, the Bible).
It always bugs me when people try to dismiss acts of religiously-inspired nuttery as anything *except* a problem of religion itself. The simple fact is that the religious nuts *really believe* their crazy religious dogma, and they then *act* on those beliefs. It's the same with Islam and any other faith-based religion (basically all religions that I know of). Of course religion isn't the only source of crazy beliefs (modern politics, esp. in America, is proof of that), it just happens to be the most widespread and persistent one.
I can tell that Steve Drain believes he's doing the right thing by preaching hate. It just so happens that his belief system cripples him from seeing that he's actually doing the opposite of the right thing.
We're the lucky ones who've avoided or escaped from these pernicious mental prisons.

Great interview. It's intriguing to hear what's happening with this group and what their beliefs are like. Also thought it was interesting how they actually view Jesus as more of a Socialist when many people in the US want to act like Jesus was a huge Capitalist.

One thing that no one discusses is that the King James Bible was ordered by the king to be rewritten and in the rewrite it was altered to better rule his kingdom. In addition scholars of the Bible have repeatedly said that the book is dangerous to those that do not have the knowledge to understand the writings and what was happening in world at that time. It is incredulous to take bits and pieces of scripture and discard other parts...ie; a woman's monthly cycle was considered evil and the woman was not allowed in the home until her cycle was over. He's right about the shrimp thing, bringing that up is a hackneyed cliche at this point.
The creator of the universe took the time to clearly and unequivocally tell the Israelites not to eat shellfish, yet he couldn't be bothered to likewise clearly and unequivocally tell them not to own slaves. Even in the New Testament, Jesus never offers a straightforward denunciation of the practice. In fact, the Old and New Testament contain many verses outright condoning slavery or imploring slaves to obey their masters. These are the same verses slaveholders in the South quoted to try to justify slavery in America.
So pointing out the proscription against eating shellfish does serve a purpose. It shows the absurdity of a literal belief in the Bible. Also to David's specific point, the commandments regarding both shellfish and homosexuality are all contained in the Old Testament. The New Testament barely even mentions homosexuality at all. Jesus said nothing about the subject directly, and his broader message of love certainly leaves room for differences of interpretation beyond WBC's take away that God hates fags.

All the state offices of any size have a Public Information office - a writer who is hired to write the news releases and it was my job to proofread them. So, the head of the agency didn't actually speak to the public, the public information officer wrote the news and often read it to the reporters. And for that matter, the public information officers - had to have someone else proofread the articles.

They are not preaching gospel of Christ because one God doesn't hate, he loves everybody and created all of us in his image and he gave his only begotten son for our sins. John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." So if anybody wants to be saved and become born again and want have a true relationship with jesus all you have to do is believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that jesus is the son the most high God and that he died on thr cross for our sins and rose on the third day you must admit that you are a sinner and you must from your heart repent of your sins. Make sure that you find a church that is all about serving God with your life. Also participate in baptism at the same time of finding a church. Make sure you invest in some bible study materials like commentaries and stuff in thst area. Also make sire you understand the word of God and make sure you don't get decieved. i recommend praying for knowledge and understanding of the word of God so that you won't misinterpret the bible.

The Bible has contradictions. In John 3:16 the Bible says that God loves everyone with a saving love while other verses says that he only loves the elect with a saving love.
